Benzodiazepines (ben-zoe-dye-AZ-e-peens) belong to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) depressants (medicines that slow down the nervous system). Some benzodiazepines are used to relieve anxiety. However, benzodiazepines should not be used to relieve nervousness or tension caused by the stress of everyday life. Some benzodiazepines are used to treat insomnia (trouble in sleeping). However, if used regularly (for example, every day) for insomnia, they usually are not effective for more than a few weeks. Many of the benzodiazepines are used in the treatment of other conditions, also. Diazepam is used to help relax muscles or relieve muscle spasm. Diazepam injection is used before some medical procedures to relieve anxiety and to reduce memory of the procedure. Chlordiazepoxide, clorazepate, diazepam, and oxazepam are used to treat the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Alprazolam and clonazepam are used in the treatment of panic disorder. Clobazam, clonazepam, clorazepate, and diazepam are used in the treatment of certain convulsive (seizure) disorders, such as epilepsy. The benzodiazepines may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Benzodiazepines may be habit-forming (causing mental physical dependence), especially when taken for a long time or in high doses.
Where am I going with all this information? The same place I bet the Felicity writers are going; Dr. Porter is going to develop a substance abuse problem. He is essentially double-dosing the same medication for different symptoms of the same illness. If he isn't already writing his own prescriptions, he will be soon. I'm also going to guess that Greg will be the one to notice Dr. P's irritability, or catch him raiding the drug cabinet. Just wait and see.
Felicity and Dr. Porter are walking down the street. She explains the staff shortage at the Health Centre and asks if he would help out by doing a couple shifts during the next few weeks. He agrees and Felicity smiles.
Knoll is in the lecture hall erasing the board. He should have asked Ben to stay behind and clap the erasers. Ruby comes in and says hi. Knoll reminds her that class doesn't begin for another twenty minutes. They have an awkward moment, which Knoll makes worse by asking her if she's had any morning sickness. She tells him that she's fine and she asks him to sign a transfer form so that she can get into another section of the course because it is awkward being in his class. Knoll says that he'll turn in the form right away. She leaves and pauses in the hall outside of the door and Knoll stands in the class.
