In God We Trust

The primaries are finished, and Vinick has a firm grip on the Republican nomination after vanquishing his only remaining opponent, a socially conservative preacher. Vinick considers offering the Vice-Presidential nomination to the preacher until the preacher makes it clear that he would not run with a pro-choice candidate. And then, in response to a reporter's question, the preacher invites Vinick to attend church services that Sunday. It comes out that Vinick doesn't attend church, and hasn't in the half-dozen years since his wife died. Apparently, this didn't come up at all in the campaign for the nomination, and it threatens to turn into a major scandal. Vinick's staff, joined by our old sexist pal Bruno, can't figure out how to respond. It's only after Vinick has a chat with Jed over some ice cream (ostensibly to solve a dispute over raising the federal debt ceiling and the minimum wage) that Vinick is able to find a way to tell the press that his religious beliefs are none of their business. On the Democratic side of the race, Santos ekes out a narrow win over Russell in the final primary, but neither candidate has enough delegates to lock up the nomination. Jed brings both men to the Oval Office for a photo op and a stern warning that he will not tolerate any dirty campaigning from them as they move toward the convention. And everyone in the White House is pretty convinced that neither of these candidates has a chance in hell of beating Vinick.
