Welcome to WeepFest 2006! Our beloved, cheesy, awesome show is over, y'all. So, Nina's getting ready to leave her house -- which has already sold -- and move to L.A. with Dimples. The packing is interrupted when she confesses to Hannah that Treat bought her an engagement ring. Hannah is all over it, and talks Nina into sneaking into the Browns' house to look at the ring. Wackiness ensues when Treat comes home; Nina sneaks out unseen, but Hannah somehow ends up with the ring in her possession. Of course, Dimples McGee finds the ring in Hannah's room, gets the story from Nina (who is at her ineffectual worst), then confronts Treat -- again -- about their dueling affections for Nina. Treat denies that he was planning to do anything while Dimples was still with Nina, but admits he's hoping it won't work out. Everybody has to have a dream.
Delia's birthday and Bat Mitzvah has finally arrived. Delia gives a wonderful speech about her family and her mom, and then becomes a woman. Treat cluelessly invites Ephram's "friend" Stephanie to go with them, and she's nice enough, but no Amy Abbott. Speaking of whom, Our Lady of Sad Bangs realizes she's still in love with Ephram once she gets a glimpse of him and Stephanie dancing it up at the party. This prompts about sixty hours of moping around, talking it out, and trying to decide what to do. Her first step -- telling Stephanie that she still has feelings for Ephram -- backfires spectacularly, so it's back to the drawing board.
Meanwhile, one of Patch Abbott's patients abandons her infant daughter on the Abbotts' doorstep, with a note explaining she won't be coming back. Rose immediately becomes overly attached to the child, and after a half-hearted search for the mother, the Abbotts file for custody of the baby. Patch takes the baby over to Feisty Nurse Edna's for a visit, and finds Edna preparing to hit the road in her RV. She's so grief-stricken that she basically tells Patch she has no more reason to live, now that Irv is gone. Rose and Patch awesomely decide to fix up a room in their house for her, and amidst all kinds of tears, Edna decides to stay.
And now, the wrap-up: Hannah is trying to decide whether to stay in Everwood and go to A&M, or head on over to Notre Dame, where she has a full scholarship. It is Bright's totally unselfish suggestion that she go to Notre Dame that makes her decide to stay in Everwood. Dimples and Nina leave for L.A., but at the airport, Dimples tells her he can't be with someone whose heart is still with someone else. After a tearful goodbye, Nina ends up back at Treat's house, as hers is already sold. Treat decides to propose, but has to do something first: he flies to New York and visits Julia's grave to say goodbye one last time, then flies back to Everwood and asks Nina to marry him in one of the greatest proposals ever. Nina accepts, of course.
Amy has finally thought of a way to announce her love to Ephram. She enlists Rose's help in setting up the Thaw Fest ferris wheel right outside the Brown house. When Ephram walks outside to leave for his date with Stephanie, Amy is there waiting. She tells him how she feels, they kiss, and it is perfect.
Wait, one more thing: Delia gets her horse!
PS: Damn you, Berlanti.
Previously on Everwood: The entire fourth season. Oh, how I've missed this show. Also, Ephram's trying to move on by dating a girl named Stephanie; Dimples and Nina are moving to Los Angeles; Treat has bought an engagement ring to not give to Nina; Irv has died; and Patch Abbott has recently had a pregnant schizophrenic patient with a dying husband.
We open at the Brown House, which I'm sad to say immediately moves me to tears. I'm so sorry y'all got stuck with such a sentimental mess of a recapper for three sopping wet seasons. It's going to be a long, moist night. Anyway, Treat, Ephram, Delia, and Ephram's new girl Stephanie are cleaning up after dinner. Hellooooo, Ephram Brown. Long time, nice haircut. Delia tells Stephanie about all the things she's learned for her Bat Mitzvah, including how cute her Rabbi is. Stephanie looks like what Fergie would if she hadn't plasticized herself to hideous and back. She tells Delia that that always helps -- she once had a physics professor who looked like Johnny Depp. Ephram interjects, "You know, I've been told that I have a Depp-like quality." Hee. Stephergie tells him he's been lied to. Delia's all excited because her Bat Mitzvah is at the Carousel Building at the fairgrounds. Stephergie thinks that sounds like one rockin' party. Ephram: "I think that's how they phrased it in the Torah." Ephram's copy of the Torah is obviously the expurgated version, penned by the Black Eyed Peas. It also says that if Jesus had existed he would have shaken it like a Poloroid picture. Delia's all, "Oh my God, you should come! Can she?" Treat says it's not that simple, that this thing is like a wedding, with rented tables and assigned seating and things like that, like, way to be totally rude in front of your guest, Treat. Delia argues that now that Dimples, Nina, and Sam aren't coming, there's room for Stephergie. Treat realizes what an ass he's being, and tells Stephergie he'd be delighted if she came, and actually insists that she be there. Ephram asks Stephergie if she even wants to come, and she says it sounds like fun. Ephram: "Yeah, what could be more fun than a lot of Hebrew and a bunch of bratty 13-year-olds?" I can think of several things that involve you and your new haircut, Ephram Brown. My God, I've become a pedophile again. Suddenly, Treat storms out of the room with a trash bag. Stephergie asks if everything's okay, and she really doesn't have to go; Ephram says it's fine, it's not her, and goes out to see what his dramatic Daddy's problem is.
Treat's outside stuffing the trash into the can with extreme force. Ephram walks out and asks what's up. Treat's all, "Nothing, why?" Ephram says for starters, he looks like he's trying to decapitate that bag of trash. "And there's the whole neighbor-slash-woman-you-love moving away thing." Treat once again denies that anything's wrong, then asks what more he can do, anyway. "She's leaving in two days with Jake. I obviously don't want her to go, but this is what has to happen, and it's better for everyone this way." Not for someone named Treat, it isn't! Ephram asks about the ring, and Treat says he's returning it tomorrow...unless Ephram needs it for some reason? Ephram: "That's funny." It is funny! It's Treat-funny, which is one of the best kinds of funny, in that it's so totally not that it is. Treat tells Ephram he appreciates what he's trying to do, and loves him for it, but he's returning the ring tomorrow. "Nina's leaving. It's time to move on." And off Ephram's concerned look, we go to the credits. Oh my God, remember when I hated this music? And then I didn't? Wah! And now it's on for the last time ever! It makes me cry! I rewind it twice to watch it over again! Because there's something wrong with me!
Nina's House. She's in the middle of packing up and is surrounded by boxes. Hannah walks into the kitchen and expresses her impressedness; when she went to bed last night, Nina hadn't even started on the kitchen. Nina, who has gotten so much prettier this year since she quit dyeing her hair that ridiculous blonde color, is impressed with her own self. She maniacally says she's been up since five, has separated everything into three piles, and has finished her second pot of coffee. "Want me to make some more?" Hannah says that's okay, Nina's had enough for the both of them. Nina apologizes again for kicking Hannah out of the house. Hannah reveals that she'll be staying with the Abbotts until school is over, then home for the summer until she goes away to college -- "...if I get in anywhere." Nina assures her that she's going to get in everywhere, and they'll be lucky to have her. Hannah holds up a big box with a bow on it and asks Nina if it goes in the trash pile. Nina jerks it away from her, all, "No, it has sentimental value! It was a gift from Andy!" It, by the way, is an enormous "personal massager." Hee. Hannah makes a little "hmph" noise and says she knew there was always something between them. Nina says she kind of did too, but then it was really obvious when he kissed her last year and then told her he loved her, but that was only because he thought she was still in love with him, but she wasn't anymore since Jake was moving in that day... Hannah's jaw drops. "Okay, that was information overload!" But Nina's not finished: "And then that whole ring thing happened." Hannah would like to know more, please, about this ring? Nina says apparently he bought it for her a few weeks ago but never actually did anything with it; Ephram told her about it, but Treat doesn't know that she knows. Hannah is at first still flustered, then gets a smile on her face. "So...right now, at this very second, there's a diamond ring sitting in a box somewhere with your name on it?" Nina says she doesn't know if her name is actually on the box, but...yeah. Music of Eminent Wacky Antics plays, and Hannah teases, "Huh. Wonder what it looks like."
Abbott/Brown Office. Patch's schizophrenic patient from a few weeks ago has now had her baby, and tells Patch that she doesn't know what it is, but something's definitely wrong. "I don't think my medication is working anymore." Patch asks what's been happening. The girl says she feels like she's slipping back to the way she was before, before they had the right pills and she was crazy and so sick all the time. The baby starts wailing, and Patch asks Louise to come watch the baby for a while. This sets off "Cathy" again -- the baby won't sleep, she can't calm her down, she has no control, etc. Patch tells her these feelings are all normal for a new mother, especially one whose husband just died. He says it's perfectly understandable, but Cathy says she doesn't think she can do this, not without her husband, and definitely not feeling the way she's feeling. Sweet Patch gets up and walks around his desk to sit to her. He says everything's going to be all right. "I promised your mother and father that I would always look after you. I will. You're not alone." Cathy says she sure does feel alone, and starts to cry. Patch puts his hand on her shoulder and says he's going to help her through this. I love you, Patch Abbott!
Hey look, it's Bright Abbott! He's in his and Ephram's apartment, looking at an electronics magazine. He tells Ephram that they could buy a TV that covered an entire wall. "If only you were willing to sell your Dad's car." Heh. Ephram is busy moving his things into Reid's old room (bye, Reid. We hardly knew ye, nor did we particularly want to.), and tells Bright not to bother helping with all the heavy stuff -- he's got it. Bright reclines further on the couch. "Cool." Oh, Bright. Amy walks in with Bright's newly dry-cleaned suit and tells him they couldn't get all the stain out, and also, please don't tell her what it was. Bright: "Why must you always go to the dark places, little sister?" Amy's like, "Was it gross or wasn't it?" Bright say
s of course it was. Ephram passes by again with a huge stack of books. "You sure I can't get you guys anything, like a sandwich or soda or something?" Bright and Amy unconcernedly say they're good. Poor Ephram. Amy says she's bored; Bright asks if she wants to go with him to get a big-screen TV. Amy: "I said I was bored, not a twelve-year-old boy." She says she's waited all year for school to be over, and now that it almost is, she's just sitting there, with nothing to do. Ephram reminds her she's going to Washington in two weeks. Amy says two weeks is a long time. In Bangs of Sadness-land, I believe it's the equivalent of thirty-three years. Bright says he's going to buy them a TV right now. Amy asks Ephram if he wants to go see a movie. Ephram says he would, but he's meeting Stephergie later. Amy's face immediately changes to from "bored" to "bitchy ex-girlfriend." She asks if "that thing" is going well. Ephram overcompensates, all, "It's going great! It's oddly normal! She comes over, we watch TV! It feels like we've known each other for YEARS!" When Ephram drops the bomb that she's also going to be at Delia's Bat Mitzvah, AND that he'd love them to get a chance to know each other, Amy can't take it, but she covers well. If by "well," you mean "badly, and also Ephram is stupid."Dimples's Office. Patch has a magnifying glass to the floor, looking for scratches on his hardwood. Feisty Nurse Edna asks what the hell he's doing. Patch: "Just trying to gauge what is above and beyond the expected nicks and scratches." Edna tells him to get the hell up and give Dimples his security deposit back. He does, reluctantly, and tells Dimples not to spend it all on suntan lotion. Dimples gives Patch a heartfelt thanks for being such a good landlord. Patch holds his hand out for Dimples to shake; Dimples takes it, then pulls Patch into a bear hug. "Whoa! Hooooly Moses." Heeeee. When they finally disengage, Patch asks Edna if she'll be joining them for dinner. Edna: "Junior, I think we can all agree that three nights in a row is more than either one of us can take." Patch, in his typical way, is like, "Okay then, so...6:00?" Edna sighs as he walks out the door, and Dimples tells her he's just worried. He asks how she is, really. Edna starts to say she's fine, then truthfully says she's getting by. Aw. Dimples says he can't help feeling like he's abandoning her in her time of need. Edna brushes him off, saying she survived Everwood for years without his help, and she can do it again. "But I really did enjoy working with you, Doc. And you know? I'm proud of you." Dimples says he's going to need a right-hand man out in L.A., and she should really think about it. Edna scoffs. "You're just dying to see me in a bikini." Aren't we all? Edna says she doesn't know what her plan is, but right now, it's one day at a time. They hug, and Dimples says he's got to get going. Edna says she'll lock up and tries not to cry as Dimples leaves. Edna picks up a picture of herself and Irv, and now the tears fall freely. Waaaaah!
Brown House of Wacky Antics. Hannah and Nina peek their heads around Treat's bedroom door. Nina whispers that she can't believe she let Hannah talk her into this, and they should go. Hannah says it's too late to turn back now. "You check that way, I'll go in here!" Aw, check out our little Hannah, all breaking and entering! Hannah searches Treat's closet and calls out to Nina, "Who knew a man could have so many shoes?" Nina checks his dresser and calls back, "Well, he's from New York." And he's rich, and probably operated on Manolo Blahnik. In which case, how 'bout some love for the recapper that NEVER STOPPED LOVING YOU? And...paydirt. Nina finds the ring sitting on top of the dresser. Hannah is trying to get her to open it when the back door slams. Oh no, it's Treat! Nina squeals that they're busted and tosses the ring to Hannah. They play catch for a while until Hannah says she'll handle this. She runs down the stairs to find Treat checking the mail, and squeaks, "Ohhidoctorbrown! Just lookin' for a sweatshirt! Sam's sweatshirt? He left it here? You know that red one that he loves, have you seen it the sweatshirt?" Treat says no, but he'll keep his eye out. Hannah says that's GREAT, then stands there trying to think what to do . Her plan is retarded, yet brilliant: "You know what's crazy? I'm having this craving for cocoa! Do you have any?" Treat says he thinks so, and Hannah grabs him by the arm, pulling him (kind of forcefully for such a tiny person) into the kitchen. "How 'bout I just make us both a cup? It's been so long since we just sat and talked!" Treat, so confused, is like, "Uh, have we ever done that?" Hannah: "Dr. Brown! Of course we have!" Meanwhile, Nina sneaks down the stairs and hauls ass out the front door. Well, that was certainly wacky, and there were definitely some antics!
Ephram is at Nina's restaurant when Dimples walks by with a coffee mug in his hand. He pats Ephram on the shoulder in a manly way and exclaims, "Ephram Brown! I'm gonna miss you and your sullen ways." Oh, Dimples, you speak for us all. Ephram asks what's going to happen to the restaurant; Dimples says they're going to hire a new manager, and Nina will come back once a month for a while to help with the transition. Ephram, stone-faced in the way only he can be, lies that that's good. He tells Dimples that Nina was the first person he met when the Browns moved here, so she's a big part of the reason Everwood feels like home to him. "And my Dad." Oooh. Nice. Dimples is like, "Uh, right." He goes about filling his coffee mug in a total faux-unruffled way, and Ephram says that's why it just seems so sudden for her to be moving. Dimples asks what that means. Ephram: "Well, she's been living here her entire life, perfectly happy, surrounded by people that she loves, and that love her...you know, it's a big decision." Heh. Dimples says it might not make sense from the outside, but he and Nina are in this together. Ephram keeps pushing, saying you have to admit it's a little bit surprising. Dimples cuts him off, nearly yelling that life is supposed to be surprising. "I bet you've got a picture in your mind about how everything's going to turn out for you...and I'm sure your dad had a picture too. But there are windows that don't stay open forever. Missed opportunities that don't come back. And waiting for them doesn't mean you're strong, or even right. Sometimes it just means that you're afraid to change the picture. You know what I've learned? Life is too short." Ephram smash! Actually, he doesn't, he just gives Dimples a look that could kill, then looks very hot as we go to commercial. Wait, what's this I feel coming on? Is it...my love for Ephram, returning to me? What a difference a year makes. CALL ME, EPHRAM, I'M READY TO PATCH THINGS UP! I TOTALLY LOST WEIGHT AND GOT A FACIAL!!!
Nina's. Amy finds Hannah packing up her room. She doesn't offer to help, of course, just flops on the bed and says she needs Hannah's help with something. Amy takes a deep breath: "Tell me that I don't like Ephram." Hannah says oh, no, she is not going to get her that easy. "I did not just fall off the pickle truck!" I don't even know what that means, but it's awesome. She reminds Amy about their little fight, and when she said Ephram was none of Hannah's business. Amy's all, "Oh, that was crazy talk. Just like this might be, I don't even know anymore. Just tell me that I don't like Ephram!" She adds, "But only if you truly, really believe it." Hee. Hannah says robotically, "You don't like Ephram." Amy quickly agrees, and says she's probably just feeling weird because of "that girl." Hannah asks if she's jealous of Stephergie. Amy says no, because that would mean she liked Ephram, which she does not, but she is absolutely not jealous. "I just wouldn't want things to go unfinished," she completely makes up. Hannah is skeptical, as she should be. Amy says she just thinks they all deserve a little bit of closure before
they go off and do anything crazy. Hannah says there has been a lot of crazy going on in Everwood recently. Amy: "I know! And you are keeping me sane. I don't like Ephram, and you are totally helping me see that. Thank you!" She leaves happily, which is when Hannah remembers the ring she has stashed on her person. "Oh, NO," she says to herself, just as......Treat is looking at the bare spot on his dresser where the ring used to be. There is also about an inch of dust around the spot where the ring was sitting, which means that either Everwood has a major dust problem, or Treat needs to fire his maid.
Ephram and Stephergie are shopping for Delia's present in a jewelry store. Ephram says they need to hurry up and get out of there, because he's breaking out in hives. Steph: "Oh, you don't need to pretend with me, Ephram. I know you read Lucky." A man after my own heart. I bet he uses the little stickers, too. His phone rings, and of course it's Treat, freaking out about the ring. Ephram calmly says he probably just misplaced it, and he'll help him look for it when he gets home. Did you ever think this day would come, when Treat and Ephram would get along so well? Yeah, neither did I, and now it's over FOREVER. Just a friendly reminder. Ephram tells Stephergie that Treat is losing his mind. Stephergie says she loves his dad -- he's nice, and he's funny. Aw, see? Ephram: "Promise me right now you will never tell him you think he's funny. Trust me, it's for your own good; he'll start testing out material on you." Ha! Stephergie tells him that his house is a lot better than most people's, and plus it's got really great snacks. Ephram can't believe she's blatantly using him like this for pudding. He gives her a little smile, and says he can't believe he hasn't done or said anything stupid yet, like accidentally tripped her. Stephergie says she has something really, really bad to tell him, then kisses him and says, "I think you're great. And don't worry about tripping me. I've got excellent balance." Lord. I want to hate her so much, but I can't, and it's making me really uncomfortable.
Abbott House! The whole family is having breakfast together, which is so nice to see, and which we'll never see again (FOREVER). Bright slathers jelly on his toast with a spoon, which is awesome, and asks when Hannah is moving into his room. Everyone looks at him all crazy, and he says he's just curious. Amy: "Birght, promise me you won't be a freak about this." Bright doesn't EVEN know what she's talking about. Amy says they've both been through a lot, and he can't just keep hanging around here, acting like he acts, because then she'll have feelings for him again. "Which, by the WAY, is the LAST THING that is supposed to HAPPEN when you BREAK UP WITH SOMEBODY!" Hee! Amy Abbott, ladies and gentlemen. That was almost as good a dinner-table freakout as when she was never going to be finished with the salt, and I thank the boards for reminding me of that one. Patch, his ever-present napkin tucked under his collar, stares at his strange children, then tells Bright to go get the paper. Bright trudges out as Amy gives us the gift of one of her famous pouts.
Bright opens the door and finds, not just the paper, but Cathy's baby in her carseat on the doorstep, along with a letter addressed to "Dr. Abbott." You cannot be serious. Bright stares down at the baby. "What the...? Mom, Dad! You better come see this." He picks up the baby and then looks around the yard, as if Cathy will be there peeking out from behind the hydrangeas. "Oh, don't mind me! Just making sure the abandonment is going smoothly!" Lord have mercy. Commercials.
When we get back, Patch is reading Cathy's letter to the fam while Rose comforts the baby (and herself). The letter reads, "I know in my heart that you'll take good care of Lily. Everyone will be better off this way. Thank you and I'm sorry, Cathy." Wow, a schizophrenic of few words, that girl. Patch explains to the kids that Cathy is a patient of his. Bright asks if that's even allowed, for her to give Patch her baby. Amy: "Of course not, IDIOT." Bright: "Well, it kind of looks like it is, there's a baby here, isn't there?" Heh. Rose tells her children to shut it and cuddles the baby some more. Oh, Rose is so in trouble. Patch says he's going to try to find Cathy and talk to her. Rose tells Amy to go to the store and get all the baby things they'll need. Bright's eyes widen. "What, are you gonna keep it?" Rose says they are, for now, because someone has to take care of the child (and by "now," she means "FOREVER...and EVER...and EVER!").
Dimples is in Hannah's room, getting ready to bring her boxes down, when he happens upon the ring box she's prominently displayed on her dresser. Hannah is a really bad criminal. Dimples opens it up, then runs downstairs, all, "I found this in Hannah's room. Oh my God, we have to talk to her and tell her what a huge mistake this would be, and besides, how can Bright afford a ring, does he even have a job, you should see the size of this thing!" He starts to open it, but Nina stops him. "I don't want to see it." She confesses that it's not Hannah's ring; it's hers, kind of. Dimples is confused, so Nina then confesses that it's from Treat, but it's not what he thinks. Dimples: "It's an engagement ring from Andy. It's probably pretty close to what I think." Nina then has to explain what it's doing in her house, considering Treat never gave it to her, so can they just... "...just table it, for now?" Dimples spits. "Yeah, sure, why not. I'll take it back for you." Aw, shit! Nina just stands there and once again lets the two men in her life handle all her problems.
Dimples walks into Treat's house with a small box. Treat asks how the packing's going. Dimples is all, "Great, almost done. We found a few things of yours. Hmm, here's a frying pan, and a curling iron of Delia's, and oh, you probably want this back too." He slams the ring box down on the table. Treat's like, "Huh, I've been looking for that. Where'd you find it?" Hee. Dimples asks if that's really what he wants to talk about right now, because he was thinking of starting with why he bought his girlfriend an engagement ring. Treat says he never gave it to her, and Dimples says he's not sure that's the point. Treat: "It is the point. As long as you and Nina were together I had no intention of ever giving her that ring. It has nothing to do with you." Dimples surmises that he basically bought it just in case they broke up, which obviously he thought they would. Treat says he's not going to lie, he was hoping it wouldn't work out -- but since they're moving to California tomorrow, it seems he was wrong. Dimples: "You were wrong? That's all you have to say?" Treat gets his serious face on and says no, he has a lot to say, but he doesn't think Dimples wants to hear it. "Because I think she made a mistake. I think I love her more than you ever can, or will. It's over, Jake. You won. Nina chose you again." Dimples says that's what's bothering him; if Nina keeps choosing him, why does he keep having this same conversation with Treat? Ooh, good question. I mean, wait, no! Bad question! And since it's my recap, we're just going to rewind and pretend this scene ended with Treat having the last word instead of Dimples. Okay, all better.
Aw, Brown House. Delia's all dressed for her Bat Mitzvah, looking very womanly in a purple silk dress and matching short jacket. She smoothes her dress and hair out, then yells in high teenage style, "LET'S GO, people!" Ephram and Stephergie hear the ruckus from the porch and come inside. Ephram tells her to take it easy; they've been outside waiting for her. Delia: "I don't want to hear any lip from you, Ephram. Today, I am a woman." Ephram: "Yeah, that's not gonna get old." Aw. Stephergie tells Delia she looks beau
tiful, and Treat walks in trying to take a picture. Delia spoiled-brattily reminds him that they've hired people for that. Treat says he thought it would just be more personal. Delia: "I don't want personal, I want perfect." Oh, Delia. I kind of wish it weren't taboo to slap a woman. Delia says they're already three minutes late, according to the Xeroxed itineraries she's made up, so they all rush out the door. As he's closing the door, Treat notices a note on the door addressed to him. It's obviously from Nina, but he puts it aside for the moment and walks to the car with his family.Over at the Abbott house, everyone's ready to go to the Bat Mitzvah except Rose, who is staying home with the baby. She pretends to be disappointed at this turn of events, but the way she's bustling around the kitchen fixing bottles tells us otherwise. Just before he leaves, Patch tells Rose he was going to call the authorities about Lily, first thing in the morning. Rose: "Maybe we shouldn't call just yet? I don't think we should involve anyone at this point." Off his look, she tells him not to worry (he should); she's not suggesting they keep Lily (she is) -- she hasn't gone completely insane (she has). "But if we call Child Services now, they'll just put her into the system, and we both know that's not what Cathy wanted." Patch asks what she's suggesting they do; Rose says maybe they should hire someone to try and find her themselves, because she's just thinking of what's best for Lily, and for Cathy. Uh huh. The baby cries, and Rose says she should go check on her. Patch says they'll talk more about it when he gets home, but he totally knows they're keeping that baby.
Montage! "This Is Our Life" by Mary Beth Maziarz plays as Nina leaves for the airport with Dimples and Sam. She turns back and wistfully looks at her house, then the house door, before getting into the car. We fade to Delia reading from the Torah at her Bat Mitzvah, while Treat looks on proudly. Your recapper starts to cry. Nina, Dimples, and Sam check their flight at the airport. Delia lights candles on a Menorah; people sign a big card congratulating her; kids ride the carousel; Ephram helps her with a candle, then Treat, who hugs her and Treat-grins. He starts walking back to his seat when Delia whispers, "Dad, can you stay for a second?" Delia addresses the crowd: "My mom and I used to talk about what this day would be like, and I always thought the three of us would be up here together. But I feel like she's watching us right now, and I hope she knows she's still a part of us, every day, and she always will be. Mom, this candle's for you." Treat helps her light it, and I'm not sure how he doesn't burst into tears after that little speech.
Party time. Delia's doing that chair dance thing that Jewish people do (hi, I'm Bright), and everyone's all drinking wine and champagne and celebrating. Amy's at the table with Stephergie and Ephram, and she tells Ephram to look at Treat, how proud he looks. Stephergie turns to Amy and enthuses, "I know! Doesn't he?" Shut up, Stephergie, you don't know him. (Ah, there it is. Hello, my old friend hate.) Stephergie asks Ephram to dance, and they kiss right there in front of Amy before they go. Bright downs his wine, and Hannah gives Amy a look. Amy: "Okay, so they're dancing. That's fine. I mean, it's good. There's no reason for me to feel weird about this." Bright rolls his eyes, all, "Oh boy." Amy goes on and on about how she's okay with it, but it would be weird if she didn't feel something, right? She's not dead inside! Hannah: "I really don't know what you want me to say here." Amy says she doesn't want Hannah to say anything, unless she wants to say something, in which case she should just say it. Hee. Hannah suddenly asks Bright to dance. Bright jumps up and they book it out of there. Amy refills her wine glass to the top. Aw.
And here we are at my least favorite scene in this whole two hours. Dimples is sitting to Nina at the airport, and he asks her what she would have said if Treat had asked her to marry him. Nina wisely says she would have said no, obviously. Dimples: "Is it that obvious?" Yeah, is it? Nina tells Dimples she loves him, and if Treat does crazy things because of his feelings for her, she can't control that. Dimples wonders why she still felt she had to see that ring. Nina lamely says she just got caught up in the moment, but she wishes she hadn't. Oh! Well, that makes it all better! She would like to forget it ever happened. Dimples says he can do that if she can be honest with him about something: "Do you still love him?" Nina's silence is answer enough for our Dimples. Nina says it's not that simple, but Dimples says it should be, and they have to talk about it before they get on that plane. Nina fesses up that a part of her is still in love with Treat, but a bigger part of her is in love with him, and they're leaving tonight for a new life together. "And once we're gone, this whole Andy thing will be behind us." Gah. Dimples tells her that he can't be with someone who has doubts, no matter how small they are -- he wants to be with someone who wants to be with him just as much. "I don't want just part of your heart. I want all of it, and you can't promise me that." He says they can ignore this thing with Treat, and maybe things will be fine for a while, but they both know it's not going to go away. And then he...breaks up with her, saying these last two years have been the best in his life, and that's because of Everwood and her. "Don't wake Sammy up until I'm on the plane, all right? I'm going to miss you, Nina." Nina says she's going to miss him too, and he gets up and walks through the gate. Nina cries in her seat, and I have to tell you, I am much more interested in the commercial that comes on with Michael Jordan and Kevin Bacon. They're both pretty hot for old people.
Bat Mitzvah. Amy Abbott is drunk on party wine. Ephram sits down to her and says Stephergie is mingling for fun, which is starting to freak him out. Amy: "You know what's freaking me out? How good this wine is! Have you had any yet?" Heh. Ephram realizes she's had way too much kosher wine, but Amy says so has the kid at Table Eight, and he's twelve years old. Delia walks by and asks them how everything's going. Amy slams down her wine, stands up to hug Delia, and slurs, "Delia! Today...you are a WOMAN! Being a woman is a great responsibility, but don't worry because I'm gonna tell you allllll of my secrets. And all of my wisdom. [beat] What was I talking about? Oh! Be proud, girlfriend, you are a woman!" Delia's like, "Okay, this has been grrreat." She has more tables to visit, she says, and escapes Amy's drunken wisdom. Ephram hands her a glass of water, and she compliments him on his snazzy suit. He says he always feels a little weird when he wears one. Amy: "You didn't feel weird coming to Everwood with that purple hair." Aw. Amy says she loves the song that's on, and asks Ephram to dance with her. Ephram says he doesn't think so, but Amy insists, "Oh, come on. I got some new moves. You gotta see 'em." With that kind of talk, how can he resist? Of course, just as they get out on the floor, a slow song starts up. Amy rests her head on his shoulder as they dance, and they both look like they're thinking of some new moves of a different kind.
Abbott House. Patch and Bright come in just as Rose is getting Lily to sleep. Bright is all loud and excited, and tells his mom that those Jews really know how to party. "Although, technically, I think there were only about four there." Ha! Patch says Lily looks ready for sleep, and Rose happily takes her upstairs to bed. Patch tells Bright he's welcome to stay, but he'll have to sleep elsewhere since Hannah's in his old room. Bright: "It's okay. I knew you guys would eventually trade me in for her." He says he'll go home, so it won't be awkward in the morning or anything, then asks Patc
h when he thinks Lily's mother will come back. Patch says he hopes it's soon, and Bright says he does too, since Rose seems to be getting so attached to her. "Any longer and giving up that baby's not going to be so easy for her." Look at our Bright, so wise in his old age! Patch says they're going to find Cathy, and Bright shoots back, "What if you don't? What if she doesn't want to be found? What are you going to do then?" Patch says he has no idea, but I think we all know he does.Fairgrounds. Hannah guides an unsteady Amy out to the parking lot. Amy is glad she's not puking. Hannah says that's why they're walking slowly. "And why you're going to remember to turn away from me when you do." Oh, Hannah. You know you're the kind of person who will hold back the hair of a puking friend. Amy asks Hannah how she manages to be such a well-behaved lady all the time, then stops and turns to face Hannah. "I was wrong. You were wrong. We were both horribly horribly wrong. About Ephram. I'm still in love with him." And with the Ferris wheel in the background (make a note, kids), Amy stumbles away.
Brown House. Treat and Delia make it through the door, and he asks if he's told her how great she was this evening. Delia: "Only about five times." Treat: "Yeah, but only once since we got home." Hello, tears. He tells her to get upstairs for bed, and he'll come say goodnight. We get a close-up shot of him looking proudly up at her and grinning, and it makes me cry EVEN HARDER that this will be the last of those FOREVER.
Treat walks into his darkened kitchen, and there, sitting at the table, is Nina. She holds up his letter and says, "I don't think you need to read this after all." Oh, the drama! Commercials.
Treat asks what happened, and Nina says it just didn't feel right, or not right enough, anyway. She leaves out the part about how Dimples totally dumped her at the gate. Nina says she knows it was the best decision for everyone, although she's not sure Sam's seeing it that way. Damn, poor Sam. I always forget about him, and now he's had, what, like twelve dysfunctional daddies? Treat sits down to her and says he's sorry. Nina apologizes for bothering him with this, but she just didn't know where else to go. Treat tells her this is exactly where she was supposed to go, and he'll go set up Ephram's room for her. Nina promises to have a game plan by tomorrow morning. Treat tells her she can stay as long as she needs to, by which he means FOREVER. Wait, do you think that word is becoming a theme or something?
Stephergie and Ephram have spent the night together at his house, and she's leaving this morning with his sweatshirt on. As long as it isn't that Brooklyn one that I've always coveted, she can take whatever she wants. Hint hint, BERLANTI. Bright comes around the corner as she's leaving and starts applauding, excited that this is the first unrecycled action he's had in this apartment all year. "Mazel tov! Learned me some Jewish last night." Heeeeee. Ephram: "Uh, it's Hebrew, and stop clapping, please." Aw, my favorite boys in a scene together, for the last time, EVER. Ephram quickly sets Bright straight that there was no action last night between him and Stephergie. Bright: "Couldn't close the deal, huh? That's weird, Little Miss Hot-n-Sassy, I would have expected more." Ephram says he didn't think it was the right time. Bright's like, "Oh, right, because Lord knows she's not hot enough with those legs, and the formalwear, and...high heels." Ephram: "When you start noticing the shoes? It makes me ask a lot of questions." Love it. Ephram immediately switches the subject to Amy, and if she got home all right last night, as wrecked as she was. Bright offhandedly says Hannah took her home or something. Ephram: "Should we call? Or something? Just to make sure?" Bright looks up from his cereal box, then recognition dawns on his face and he throws the box at Ephram. "Ah HA! That's why there was no 'it' with Stephanie. You danced with the devil last night. Fogged your brain. Clogged your drain." OH MY GOD. Ephram begs Bright not to rhyme, or clap. Bright wants to know what's up with him, and Ephram admits that there might have been some feelings last night, and he needs to think about that before he takes any action on the Stephergie tip. Bright tells him he's totally going to screw this up. Ephram: "I'm just saying! If I felt something, maybe she felt something too." Bright says she didn't, and that's his problem. "You think there's juice left in that box, but there isn't!" He reminds him that Stephergie's hot, totally into him, and brings no drama to the table. Yeah, but does she draw comparisons to a juice box? I think not. Bright helps him remember how he wrote all those postcards to her from Europe, and how Amy blew him off, and one dance at a Bat Mitzvah isn't going to change that. Ephram considers this and tells Bright he's right. Bright says he knows, as Ephram walks back into his room with the cereal. Bright: "Can I have that box back now, please? That's our last box."
Amy is lying on her bed with cucumber slices over her eyes -- which I'm pretty sure doesn't cure a hangover nearly as well as a cheeseburger, fries, and two Diet Cokes (this is a patented recipe, my friends. Use it well.) -- and telling Hannah that if she'd realized she was still in love with Ephram a month ago, all of this would have been a lot less tricky. Hannah agrees that the whole girlfriend situation is a minefield. Amy sits up abruptly, sending the cucumber flying, and says, "But I still have to tell him, right? I mean, you saw that dance. That was hot. There was HEAT there." Hannah: "That will not die." Hee. Amy says exactly, and it certainly wasn't that hot with him and "the other one." Hannah: "Stephanie?" Amy: "Whatever." She asks how she proceeds. Hannah thinks she proceeds by telling him. Amy finds this unsatisfactory: a plan has prongs, usually three prongs, just like on Law & Order. Hannah says yeah, but she didn't kill anybody and hide the body from Sam Waterston. Amy is worried that Ephram will think it's an act of jealousy if she just waltzes on over there and confesses her feelings. Hannah says he won't, because it's not, right? She's sure, right? Amy says yes -- he makes her feel safe, and happy, and makes her laugh, and is there when she cries. Hannah is clearly moved, and tells her to say just that. Amy: "Could work."
Edna's (but not Irv's, wah!) House. Patch rolls in with Lily in a stroller, and Edna asks what he's doing there. Patch says he's been riding around for half an hour trying to get Lily to sleep, and it worked with Amy when she was little, too. Oh, he's so hooked. I'd like to mention here that Patch is wearing his trademark argyle sweater over a plaid button-up. As always, this kind of continuity is cheesy, but awesome. He shows Edna all the cool new things they've invented since his kids were little, like bouncy chairs and non-toxic books and toys, and he's particularly in love with the bottle warmer. Edna, who appears to be packing a bag with clothes, asks how the meeting with the lawyer went. Patch says they're officially Lily's guardians, and if the authorities aren't able to find Cathy within ninety days...he and Rose have a good chance of being awarded permanent custody. Well, isn't that convenient? Edna looks concerned, and tells him Cathy could come back. Patch says he's aware of that. "But you try not getting attached to this little angel!" Damn. Patch finally notices what Edna's doing, and tells her it seems like an awful lot of packing for a short vacation. Edna reveals that she's not going on a vacation -- she's moving to Africa to shack up with Rinda. Patch is outraged. "You can't move to AFRICA!" Edna's all, "Why not? There's a shortage of nurses there, I've got the field experience, why not use it? The pay's not too shabby either." Patch says he knows she's grieving, but this is insane. Edna says it makes perfect sense, since Irv's gone and Bright an
d Amy are all grown up, not to mention the fact that she doesn't have a job anymore. Patch tells her to come back to work for him and Treat, a more ridiculous idea than moving to Africa. Edna says they've had their run, and she figures Rinda deserves equal time. Patch argues that this is just the grief talking. Edna: "Oh, grief. I've never been much of a mourner. And I'm moving on to Phase 3. Harper would have wanted it that way." She busies herself with Lily, who's woken up adorably, and Patch can't do much but stand there and look at his crazy mama and his almost-baby. Commercials.Abbott House. Amy is giving Lily some love, and Hannah asks her if she doesn't have somewhere to be this morning. "Isn't there a plan in action?" Amy says she still has time, but she doesn't look so sure of those prongs she was talking about earlier. Patch walks through the room yelling into the phone, and Rose exposits to the girls that he's on the phone with Rinda in Africa, and it must be a bad connection. Now it's Hannah's turn to hold the baby, just so everyone can fall in love. Patch hangs up and says it's unbelievable: Edna never even called Rinda, nor is she expecting her anytime soon. He can't believe Edna lied to him and made up the entire thing. "The question," he says, shaking his finger prissily, "is why." Amy suggests maybe Edna met someone; it's happened before. Patch: "Oh, indeed! The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage table." Rose: "There's no need for Shakespeare, dear. We get the point." Patch thinks it might be Jensen, because he's had his eye on Edna since their senior prom. Rose rolls her eyes, and Amy tells Patch to give Edna some credit. Heh. Rose tells Patch to just ask his mother what's going on, and Patch is all, "Oh, you can bet we will be having a conversation." It will have to be after they clean up Hannah, though, as Lily chooses that moment to spit up on her shoulder.
Over at the Brown House, Treat is fixing waffles for Delia and Nina and Sam. Delia tells her dad that some travel agent called and said he could get him a ticket for tomorrow, no problem. Treat's all, "Great, thanks!" Delia asks where he's going, but he won't tell. He says it's just a thing, and he'll be gone for a day or so. Nina's looking at the real estate listings and complaining about the price of housing in Everwood. Guess you shouldn't have closed so incredibly quickly, eh, Neen? Delia tells Nina they have lots of room at their house..."right, Dad?" Treat says they do, and tries to pretend he's not jumping up and down on the inside. He suggests they all go to the mall, and make a day of it. Delia, who is already sitting underneath a huge pile of gifts, asks if that's where her birthday/Bat Mitzvah present is. Treat tells her good things come to those who wait. Sam, meanwhile, is trying to get Nina's attention, and when he finally does, he asks if he can call Jake. Everything gets really awkward, then Treat tells Sam he can use their phone. Sam says that's okay, his mom has his number in her cell phone. Wow, it's a good thing Treat's so rich, because he's going to be paying for a LOT of therapy for little Sammy in a few years. Either that, or sending him ten dollars a week to buy cigarettes in jail.
Hannah and Bright are actually at the mall, and they're wandering around talking about what they'll be doing year. Bright says he's going to figure out his major before he starts classes year at A&M, and Hannah tells him how proud she is of him. Aw. Bright asks if she's narrowed down a school yet, then adds, "I heard about Sarah Lawrence. That sucks, I'm sorry." Hannah says it's okay, she didn't think she'd get the full scholarship there anyway, but she did get a letter from Notre Dame just today, and she got a full scholarship. And I wonder why nobody told Sarah Drew to stop pronouncing "Notre" like she's some kind of fancy French person or somethin', but we say it like "noter" here yonder. Bright says that's incredible, and asks what she's going to do. He's totally flustered, and it is totally cute. He's like, "So if you decide to go there, I mean, what would, what would, I mean, what would that mean?" Heh. Hannah guesses that would mean she'd leave for home on Friday, then head straight to Notre Dame after the summer's over. Bright: "Okay. And when would you be coming back to Everwood?" Hannah says that's the thing -- she wouldn't. Looks like you better get Hannah on that A&M train and right quick, Brighton.
Sam's, the restaurant, not the confused young boy. Amy is sitting at a table across from Stephergie, and she thanks her for meeting her there. Stephergie asks what's going on. Amy tells Stephergie that this is kind of awkward, but since she's majoring in women's studies..."you know, sisterhood above all, woo hoo!" OH MY GOD. Stephergie says if Amy's trying to recruit her for the program, she's pretty set on marine biology. Amy says she's actually there to talk to her about Ephram. She takes a big, stalling sip of her coffee, then tells Stephergie that, as she's sure she knows, Amy and Ephram were kind of a thing -- a pretty big thing. Stephergie takes this to mean Amy's the girl who had the baby, which Amy is quick to correct. Stephergie says that seems like a messed-up situation, poor Madison, etc. Amy says she's not Madison, since she's Amy. Stephergie just sits there. Amy: "Amy...Abbott?" Stephergie: "Oh, yeah, you're the most recent ex!" Hee. This is going great. Amy finally gets to the subject at hand, which is that she still has feelings for Ephram. Stephergie says she now sees why Amy thought this might be awkward, and they laugh...well, awkwardly. Amy says the thing is, she kind of feels like she has to tell Ephram, because of their history and all. Stephergie's like, "Okay. You do realize I'm not Ephram, though, right?" Amy reminds her about the sisterhood, woohoo, and Stephergie says she gets it, and appreciates Amy talking to her about it first. Amy wants to make sure she's okay with this, because she can sisterhood talk to her more about it if she'd like. Stephergie says Amy's got to do what she's got to do, and she respects that, but..."To be honest with you, I'm not that stressed about it anyway. I mean, come on Amy, if Ephram wants to get back together with you, there's nothing I can do to stop him. But I really don't think that's what he wants anymore." Damn! She shrugs, and adds, "But...good luck!" Oh, it is ON, Miss Hot'n'Sassy, and Amy Abbott's Bangs of Sadness will be taking you down all over the place, coming soon, to an ass-kicking near you. Commercials.
When we get back, Treat is driving Delia out into the country somewhere, presumably for her birthday present. But first, Treat wants to have a heart-to-heart, something he's so good at and something that we won't see again FOREVER. He says he knows it's been a pretty rough year -- she didn't talk to him for a month, and when she did, it was loud. Delia says she's sorry for getting all caught up in that popular crowd stuff, and she won't be mean to him anymore. Treat: "Sure you will. You're almost a teenager now, and it's going to get worse before it gets better. You're growing up. Sometimes I wish I could just freeze time and keep you as that little girl in the baseball hat, but I know I can't. I also know it's going to be a lot more arguments, and a lot more tears, and I'm sure you'll hate me again before you finish high school...but I want you to understand that I'm really okay with that." Delia gets this look on her face, then asks her dad if he's leaving her there in the woods. Heeeee. And that's why I love this show. Treat says he knows it's not going to be as easy between them as it was when she was little. "But whatever happens, just know that when you need me I'll always be here. Because when you think that I'm not listening, I am. And when you think I've forgotten, I haven't." Tears. Kleenex. Shut up. He turns off, and announces that they're here. And of course you know what's coming. Delia sees the sign that
says "Ranch and Stables," then screeches, "NO WAY!" Treat just grins as they drive up. When they get out of the car, he takes Delia by the shoulders and says, "I made you a promise when we moved here. Well, it was more of a bribe. You weren't ready four years ago, but I think you're ready now." Delia turns, and a grizzled old ranch hand is standing there with a sweet old horse. He tells Delia that her name is Sugar, and says she should introduce herself. Delia does, and Treat says he got her riding lessons, but she'll have to help brush her and clean her stall. Delia: "I will, I'll do all that! I love her. Thank you, Dad, thank you so much!" She hugs Treat, and Treat tells Delia happy birthday, and I have to fix a drink and I'm going to name it Sugar.Stephergie and Ephram walk out of a movie to find Amy Abbott, in a super-cute shirt, waiting in line for her own movie. Amy nervously says she's just waiting for Hannah. "Always late, that girl!" She asks how the movie was, and Stephergie is all, "Ohhhhh, we LOVED it, RIGHT?" Ephram says it was definitely the best Will Ferrell movie he's seen all day. Heh. Amy says good, she could use a laugh, then adds, "Uh, not that I'm sad. I'm just always up for a laugh. You know that about me, right, Ephram?" She smiles adorably, and compliments Ephram's jacket. He says Stephergie bought it for him, actually. Amy says fakely that it's great. Stephergie gives Amy a look like, "Round 1: Me," and leaves with Ephram. Damn her!
Brown/Abbott Office. Treat and Patch are going over some paperwork, and when they finish, Patch says he refuses to cover his patients until Treat tells him where he's going, and why. Treat: "I love it when you get uppity with me. It reminds me of our first cutemeet." Aw. Patch tries to figure out where he's going by how long his flight is going to be, and Treat just tells him he'll see him in two days. Patch jumps up and yells, "Damn it, man, now is not the time! Don't you see? Wherever it is you think you need to be, I guarantee you it is not nearly as important as staying PUT." He reminds Treat that not eight months ago, he was on that very couch, confiding in Patch his feelings for Nina. "I listened, and provided what I believed to be very good counsel, happy to play Cyrano to your Christian! And then I sat back and looked on as you and Dr. Boob Job played out some comic mating ritual, fighting to prove just who was the fittest of the species." Treat's like, yeah, so now what? Patch says so now he's won: the woman has rejected Hartman and moved into his house, and now is the time to make his move. Treat: "You know, Harold, I think I have finally figured you out. You, Dr. Abbott, are a hopeless romantic. At the end of the day, you just want the guy to get the girl, don't you?" Patch says yes, assuming the girl is Nina. He also confesses that he was never in favor of Treat and Rinda; in fact, he told her Treat was a bit of a dilettante. Treat: "That's okay. I used to leave home ten minutes early just so I could take your parking spot." Oh, you two. So in love, and now it's over FOREVER. I understand a person named Dawn Ostroff is responsible for this, and to her I'd like to extend a big fuck you, recorded here for all posterity. So there it is: kiss it, Ostroff. The writers of this show don't deserve the likes of you, anyway. Ephram arrives to take Treat to the airport, and Treat gives Patch a big hug. "Thanks, Harold. For everything." Patch asks Ephram where Treat is off to, because he's happy to pick him up from the airport. Treat: "Nice try, Harold." Hee. Aw, Patch, you big sap.
Bright finds Hannah in the Abbott den, watching campus videos and still trying to decide between Notre Dame and A&M. Bright is glad she's still deciding, and says he's actually got a bunch of information for her. Hannah says that she can't talk to him about this, because she's made all these lists of pros and cons, and he's on some of the lists. Bright: "No, your ex-boyfriend El Jerko is on some of the lists. And he should be. But I'm solely here as your old friend Bright Abbott. So, pros. Bring 'em on." As Hannah names the pros of Notre Dame, Bright is all hemming and hawing and wagging his head, clearly hating his once-beloved football team. He likes Hannah's A&M pros much better, but when Hannah says the only reason she's really considering it is because he and Amy are there, his face changes. He's so grown up! Hannah says it's a huge pro, absolutely, and they should probably count it as two. Bright half-heartedly tells her to count it as three, which she happily does. She asks what her old friend Bright Abbott thinks she should do, and good old Bright truthfully says he doesn't know.
We fade into a shot of a headstone reading "Julia Brown. Beloved daughter, mother, wife. 1958 - 2002." And now we know where Treat has gone. He lays a flower down and says, "Hello, Julia. I know, you were never a big tulip fan, but I couldn't find a flower shop so I tried three grocery stores, and this is the only flower that looked like it might make it through the night." He's dressed in pants and a sport coat, which KILLS ME, because who else would think of that but our Treat? The rest of what he says is so perfect I'm going to transcribe it for you, as I've had to do so many times before on this dumb show. "I'm assuming you already know why I came, but I'm going to go ahead and say it all anyway. I've changed a lot, Julia. I've learned that being a good friend and a good parent are really the only things that make you sleep better at night. I've learned that what bothers you about your kids is whatever you have in common with them, and what you love about them most is stuff that you have absolutely nothing to do with. I've learned that pain and suffering are unavoidable, but ultimately they are what bring you closer to other people. And lately...lately, I've learned that it's possible to fall in love again. I tried hard not to, I really did. It's so unfair to you, you know. It was you I wanted to be this guy for. I'm just so sorry I couldn't when you were alive, but I love her, Julia. I love her and I'm going to ask her to be my wife. If she says yes, I'll take that as your blessing. And if I'm going to be the kind of husband to Nina that you would want me to be, then I think that this should probably be our last goodbye. Thank you, sweetheart. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for teaching me what love is in your life, and even more so in your death. And thank you for blessing me with two exquisite children, in whom your spirit will always live on. Goodbye, Julia." He leans down and kisses the top of the headstone. I wish we were like the Eskimos, and had a hundred words for "crying." Commercials.
Patch follows Edna out to her RV in the rain as she packs it up with her stuff, asking why she hasn't called him back. Edna: "Listen up, Columbo, you had no business fact-checking my story. Calling Linda behind my back, starting a ruckus." Patch says he was just worried, and had no idea that her crazy idea would turn out to be a crazy lie. Edna tells him to mind his own beeswax, and slams the RV door in his face, which he promptly opens right back up. Edna says this is exactly why she's getting out of Dodge; he can't go five minutes without checking up on her even when he thinks she's okay. "Imagine how it would be if you knew how I really felt." Patch asks how she does really feel, as she's made such a show of saying she's through with her grief, and feels fine. Edna says she only said that so he'd cancel the pity party and leave her alone. "The truth is," she says, angrily throwing kitchen supplies around, "I feel awful. I can't sleep, I'm sad, I'm angry, and for the first time in my life, I can't picture a time when I might feel better. I don't see the other side of this one." Patch says she will, it just might take some time. Edna tells him he doesn't have to do that; she knows she's acting crazier than an outhouse rat. I'm going to take that as a shout-out, except I'm goi
ng to substitute the word "shithouse" in there for good measure. Edna starts to cry, and says that without Irv, she doesn't know what her life is anymore. Patch sits down to his mom and asks her to let them help her -- that's what they've been trying to do. Edna says she knows, but he can't, nor can anyone else. "I just need to be alone right now." Patch asks if that's her plan: to just get in the RV and drive around for a month or so until she feels better. Edna says she couldn't say for how long, and frankly, she doesn't see herself going for much longer without Harper anyway. Patch tells her that she is talking crazy now, and she has a family who loves her and wants to take care of her. Edna: "I've never been taken care of by anyone in my life, and I don't intend to start now. I'm not going to be a burden. Not to you or Rose or anyone else. Please. Don't try to talk me out of this. It was a tough decision, but I've made up my mind." Patch is speechless, for once in his life. It's awful.Abbott House. Rose walks into Amy's room and asks her some motherly question, probably having to do with if she's going to stay in bed all day. Amy tells her mom how stupid she is -- she had the thing everyone wanted, and she just threw it away. "And now Ephram has become STEPHRAM. And you can't just go up to Stephram and be like, 'I'm in love with you again,' especially since she's buying him jackets!" She says she thought she could work the old-school angle, but now she's realizing that she has no angle. Rose: "You love Ephram." Amy: "Mom, yes, keep up!" Hee. Rose says that, considering the history they have, she thinks that amounts to more than a jacket, and she obviously just needs to express her feelings to Ephram in a slightly less anxiety-provoking way than she just described them to her. Amy says it won't be enough to just say it, and besides, this is Ephram -- Grand-Gesture Ephram. "He had his dad perform surgery on my boyfriend while he was in love with me. He wrote my Princeton essay for me. Our first time together..." Rose is all, "Uh, I GET IT. Say no more." Amy says she needs a way to show him how much she loves him, that she remembers everything and isn't going to forget. Rose kisses her crazy daughter on the head and says, "Then you will."
Bright's taken Hannah way high up on top of some mountain, probably to try some of his new moves on her, but he thinks better of it. He asks if she's made a decision, and Hannah says not yet, which is ridiculous since her registration is due, like, tomorrow. Bright takes a deep breath and says, "I think you should go to Notre Dame. It's not because I don't love you, but...it's the right thing to do." Hannah doesn't understand. Bright says he had a whole pitch all planned out about why she should stay in Everwood, but he was doing it for him, not for her. "Because I couldn't bear the thought of not seeing you every day. And because part of me was hoping that we would get back together. But I know I was being selfish, and if there's anything you taught me...when you love someone, you've gotta put them first." Hannah starts to argue, but Bright tells her if the only reason she wouldn't go is because she's afraid she's going to lose him and Amy... "Come on, Hannah. I'm always going to be here. I know I've let you down before. I promise it's never going to happen again. So it's going to be me and you. Best friends. For life. Okay?" Hannah says okay, and she cries and hugs him. And we'll never see Bright again, you guys. FOREVER. A sweet song picks up, and we cut to...
...Amy, still in her bed, trying to figure out what to do. She closes her eyes, and we get a montage of great flashbacks: she and Ephram on top of the mountain, then on the Ferris Wheel at the Thaw Fest; their first kiss on that field trip; ice skating; at the prom; at the Country Club when they had summer jobs and Ephram wore those stupid shorts; more kissing; when Ephram got on the plane to New York and Amy was already there waiting in the seat to him; on the couch in his studio and the hooker thong; when he gave her that awesome necklace that I totally want; and their first time doing the sex. When that little bit of nostalgia is over, she jumps up from her bed and finds her mom in the kitchen. "I think I've got it," she says, smiling, "but I'm going to need your help." Rose says okay, and we go to commercials.
We return to Edna calling for Rose and Patch in the downstairs of their house. "Hell of a going away party," she says to herself, and starts up the stairs. When she gets up there, Rose and Patch are standing in a bedroom that's been transformed into a thing of beauty for her. Patch: "Edna Harper, welcome to your new bedroom." He says they were on a tight time frame, so it's not quite finished yet, but she's even got wallpaper choices, and Rose picked out some lovely curtains. Rose: "They really do let the light in, don't you think?" Edna's eyes fill with tears, and she doesn't know what to say. Rose just wants her to say she'll move in with them. "It's not just that we want you here, Edna, it's that we need you. Amy will be moving out soon, and to tell the truth, I could use the help with Lily. She needs a grandmother." Patch says they lost too much time when he was growing up, and he doesn't want to lose anymore time with her. Edna looks around and says, "Well, I guess I could do worse." Rose goes over to hug her (so much hugging in this episode!) while Patch looks on gladly.
Hannah smiles as runs across the street and drops an envelope in the mailbox. It's addressed to Colorado A&M. Aw, yeah.
Brown House. Treat is getting ready for his big moment. Ephram asks him what he did while he was in New York. Treat says he took some flowers to Julia's grave, and just talked to her, strange as it sounds. Ephram: "No, it doesn't sound strange. Now, when we just moved here, and you were talking to her in public? That was a little strange." Ephram asks Treat if he's really going to do it, and Treat tells him that nobody could ever replace his mother. Ephram says he knows; it's just that he's so used to things not working out the way they're supposed to that it's just a little weird when something looks like it's going to happen. Treat tells him not to jinx it; she hasn't said yes yet. Ephram recalls Dimples's words about everyone having that picture in their minds of how they think their life is supposed to be. "Makes you wonder if maybe I should hold out a little longer for my picture -- Amy and I." Treat tells Ephram that the thing about the picture is how he looks in it. "It's not about who you're standing to or what's in the background. It's...are you smiling? Are you happy? If you are, it doesn't matter where you're standing or who you're standing to. It's a good picture. You're way ahead of the game, Ephram." Ephram says it doesn't always feel that way. Treat says oh, but he is. "I've watched you take your pain, and your chaos, and turn them into something beautiful. You've changed people's lives; you've saved people's lives, mine included. You've made peace with your past. You've opened yourself up to a woman you loved, and you bounced back with style when things didn't go your way. You've been brave, and honest, and you got a haircut, which makes the picture look even better." Treat says he's so proud of how Ephram has turned out, so no matter who he ends up with, she's going to be lucky to have him. Agreed. And agreed. Ephram says there's something wrong with this -- isn't it the guy who's about to propose who gets all the advice? Treat asks if there's anything in his teeth; Ephram says no, and Treat says he's done his duty. Ephram asks his dad if he's nervous. Treat: "You bet your ass I am." Cheesy. Awesome. Before he goes, he tells Ephram that if this all works out, he's expecting him to be the best man...and he didn't have a bachelor party the first time out, so there's a lot of pressure. He walks into the closet instead of out the door, and Ephram has to call
this to his attention.Downstairs, Nina's sitting at the table with Delia and Sam when Treat takes her by the hand and commands Treatily, "Come with me. I want to ask you something." He takes her outside and into her front yard door. Nina says she's not wearing any shoes, and Treat says it doesn't matter, because she's not going to need him. He gets her in position and starts, "This is where we met." He can hardly go on, though, because construction workers are drilling and sawing and banging away on Nina's house. After politely asking them to shut the hell up, Treat resumes his speech. He reminds Nina that when they met, she was working in the yard in that exact spot, which he thought was odd because there was a foot of snow on the ground. Nina says she remembers. Treat says the time he saw her, she invited him into her house, where they drank coffee and talked. "And I remember thinking when I left that it wasn't just a coincidence that I ended up buying that house. It was fate. Someone was trying to tell us something. You know how I feel about you, Nina. I'm in love with you. I have been for a long time. And I can't think of anyone else on earth that I would rather spend the rest of my life with, so..." He pulls the ring out of his pocket, saying he knows she's seen it already. Nina cries that she hasn't; she never looked. Treat says that makes this part more fun, then. He gets down on one knee and asks Nina to marry him. She says yes, and I don't care that it's totally retarded. It is AWESOME, and the ring is no slouch, either. They kiss. Woohoo!
Ephram is rushing out of his apartment while simultaneously leaving a voicemail for Stephergie that he's sorry he's late for the movie, but is on his way. When he walks outside, though, there's someone waiting for him. It's Amy Abbott, and she's set up the Thaw Fest Ferris Wheel in the street outside his house. He looks at her like she's crazy, and she tells him not to say anything yet. "I want to go first, and since I brought the Ferris wheel, I figured you'd let me." She steadies herself, then starts talking. "Four years ago, you came to my little town, and you changed my life. I never thought that one person could do that, but you did. From the moment I met you and each moment after that, somehow everything that happened to me kept coming back to you." She asks if the Ferris wheel reminds him of anything, and he's like, "Are you kidding me?" He remembers their first Thaw Fest, and how she told him her nickname was Grover. Amy can't believe he remembers that. Ephram: "I remember everything about us, Amy." Amy says she does too, and that's the thing -- every time she tries to forget the feelings she has for him, they keep coming back. "And I don't want to push them down anymore, or run away from this, because I never want to lose you again. I just want to be with you, to you, wherever you are. And I'm sorry it took me so long to figure out, because I hate all the time that we lost. And I just really hope that you can forgive me. Because I love you, Ephram." And do you know what Ephram does ? HE KISSES HER. And it is perfect, and when they're done, Ephram says, "Is it my turn yet?" Amy nods yes. "Good," he says. "Because I love you, too. I knew it then, and I know it now. Always, you're it, Amy. You're my one. You always have been." He looks up at the Ferris wheel, and they both giggle a bit. She asks if he wants to go for a ride. "In a second," he says, and kisses her again. We pull back and pan up to a gorgeous view of the mountains over Everwood, and fade out. I am not ashamed to admit that I wept at this ending what should have been an embarrassing amount, telling my husband in between sobs how much I hate this stupid show. But really, I don't. I love this stupid show. It was my first recapping job (for which I'd like to thank Sars, even though she probably wishes she'd thought better of it after all the Kleenex she's had to pay for ["worth every penny, missy" -- Sars]), and I was all prepared to hate it. We all know how that turned out. So...
Damn you, Berlanti. And thank you. You too, Mimoun, and all the writers. Also, I want that Brooklyn jacket. And an interview for the site. And a million dollars.
I LOVE YOU EVERWOOD! CALL ME!!!!

Stephergie tells Delia she looks beautiful, and Treat walks in trying to take a picture. It's obviously from Nina, but he puts it aside for the moment and walks to the car with his family.
Over at the Abbott house, everyone's ready to go to the Bat Mitzvah except Rose, who is staying home with the baby.

I knew you guys would eventually trade me in for her." He says he'll go home, so it won't be awkward in the morning or anything, then asks Patch when he thinks Lily's mother will come back. What are you going to do then?" Patch says he has no idea, but I think we all know he does.
Fairgrounds.

Edna says it makes perfect sense, since Irv's gone and Bright and Amy are all grown up, not to mention the fact that she doesn't have a job anymore. Commercials.

Abbott House.

Delia sees the sign that says "Ranch and Stables," then screeches, "NO WAY!" Treat just grins as they drive up. I love her. Thank you, Dad, thank you so much!" She hugs Treat, and Treat tells Delia happy birthday, and I have to fix a drink and I'm going to name it Sugar.

Stephergie and Ephram walk out of a movie to find Amy Abbott, in a super-cute shirt, waiting in line for her own movie.

I'm going to take that as a shout-out, except I'm going to substitute the word "shithouse" in there for good measure. It's awful.

Abbott House.

He walks into the closet instead of out the door, and Ephram has to call this to his attention.

Downstairs, Nina's sitting at the table with Delia and Sam when Treat takes her by the hand and commands Treatily, "Come with me.
So...
