Credits. I'm annoyed that they don't follow the practice of The Mole and remove the dismissed recruits from the opening credits. It certainly makes things less confusing. I guess their budget wasn't big enough to pay for new credits every week.
Last week on Boot Camp: the drill instructors yelled a lot. The recruits got their hair cut and had to do hard physical labor. Recruit Haar managed to finish the mile and a half run, even though everyone thought she wouldn't. If, by everyone, you mean "people who have never watched a reality show before and aren't familiar with the emotional manipulation they entail." Park said that he didn't think Haar would make it because she pulled a groin muscle. It's ironic in retrospect that Park thought someone else would be dismissed. Katherine dropped out after about ten minutes. Wolf led the first mission, which was a success, but the men and the women fought. Wolf, Park, Jackson, and Moretti joined forces to try to oust Meyer. To combat that, Meyer made a teary (and completely insincere) speech about how hard he was trying. Meyer managed to escape dismissal by one vote, and Park was the one to say goodbye.
Day Five. 6:00 AM Wake Up. Recruit "Who?" Coddington is on guard duty as DI "Don't Call Me Mrs." Taylor approaches. DI Taylor reproaches Coddington for not saying, "Good morning, ma'am!" and Coddington corrects the problem. DI Taylor wakes the female recruits, but orders Haar to "stay in the rack." DI "San" Francisco and DI "Bad Cop" McSweeney awaken the male recruits. DI McSweeney harangues Recruit "Old Man" Lauder. DI Taylor gives the women fifteen seconds to get dressed. DI Francisco forces Recruit "Poodle Balloon" Yaney to get back in the rack, and pretend to sleep while the DI covers him up and teases him about his inability to do something correctly. I'm not sure why Yaney is the target this time, but do we need a reason, really? It's just funny to see Yaney stiffly pretending to sleep while the DI tucks him into his bed. Two recruits -- Wolf and Lauder maybe? -- make their beds without being asked, and DI McSweeney approves. Yaney is finally allowed to get up, and he runs over to his locker, forgetting that DI Francisco threw his uniform on the floor. So then he has to turn around and get his uniform. He's such a screw-up. But a lovable one. Like Urkel or something. Except not scary or annoying.
Over in the women's bunk, Coddington is helping Recruit "Don't Make Me Think About Her Groin" Haar into her clothes. DI McSweeney appears and asks whether Haar is any better today. Haar says that the pain medication is helping. DI McSweeney says that he doesn't "speak Midwest." He goes on to say that he asked if she was getting better, and makes the analogy that if his arm got blown off, and he got morphine, the medication might help but it wouldn't bring his arm back. I think DI McSweeney has seen a few too many war movies. Haar answers that she thinks she's getting better. In an interview, Haar says that it's frustrating because everyone is looking at her and thinking that she's a cripple. She even told the others that they could call her Recruit Cripple, because that's what she is. Well, at least she's honest about it. I can't fault her attitude.
Night Five. 7:15 PM. Sunset. The recruits troop out to a pier to watch the sunset. The DIs repeatedly ask them if the sunset is beautiful. In an interview, Hutak says that the DIs didn't know what sunsets meant to her, and then tells a teary story about how she used to go surfing with her family (including her sister), and they would watch the sunset together, and now her sister's dead. They're trying for the pathos of last week with Haar running, but it's not working on me. I think it's the overblown background music. It's like a bunch of operatic female voices singing Gregorian chants or something. It's all distracting me from the "moment." And then there's a commercial, so any emotion I had going is gone anyway.
After the commercials, we see a quick shot of an alligator, and I guess the editors are trying to fool people into thinking that they're watching Survivor for a few minutes. Day Six. 8:20 AM. Strength Training. Hey, DI Rosenbum is back! I was wondering where he was. I missed him! The recruits do pull-ups. Pupo tells DI McSweeney that she didn't do any pull-ups and he orders her out of his face. The other recruits cheer Coddington on as she manages one pull-up. Hey, that's one more than I would have gotten. DI McSweeney is disgusted that Coddington only did one, since Hutak did eight. Recruit "Evil" Meyer reports that his shoulder hurts, so he doesn't know if he can do the pull-ups. DI Francisco tells him that he's lucky that his shoulder's the only thing that hurts, and orders him to try. Meyer hops up and does one pull-up, but then "can't" do anymore. In an interview, Meyer says that boot camp is physically "a joke for [him]." DI Taylor yells at Meyer, wondering why he isn't laughing now. Also, I dont think Meyer is wearing any underwear. I'm just saying. Back in the interview, Meyer admits that he was faking the shoulder injury. He loudly says, "I'm not sore at all," just as another recruit jogs by on the path behind him. Meyer stops and looks around, and then says sarcastically, "Well, that's great." Ha! Meyer continues to "try" to do a pull-up and fails. In an interview, he explains that he and others like him (who?) just want to have fun, so they're going to vote out the people who are all serious and then "sneak out in the middle of the night" and party. Yeah, that'll happen. I don't think he quite understands the rules of the game, does he? Meyer says that he wants to kick out "the people who are annoying." So he's going to vote for himself, then? Meyer reports to DI McSweeney that he can't remember how many pull-ups he did, and DI McSweeney says that he's going to put down none.
1:30 PM. Female Barracks. DI Francisco finds Pupo out hanging clothes on the line and starts yelling at her. In an interview, Pupo says that she knew coming in that she needed to work on her "attitude adjustment and impulse control," and that she had a "short temper, not very patient, a little bit high-maintenance." Wow, she sounds like a prize, doesn't she? Pupo walks into the barracks where some of the others are sitting around talking. In an interview, Recruit Moretty says that she doesn't get a "good vibe" from Pupo, and she can't figure her out. In an interview, Recruit "Campbell's Soup" Whitlow says that she's tired of "the whininess and the rude comments." In the barracks, Whitlow goes over and tells Pupo (who is sulking and changing her clothes in a corner) that they weren't ignoring her. Back in the interview, Whitlow says that Pupo's "true colors are coming out." In an interview, Pupo says that it's "not a shocker" for people to tell her that they don't like her attitude, because "it rubs normal people the wrong way." Well, why wouldn't you change, then? Whitlow asks Pupo if she needs help (changing?) and Pupo yells out, "No, thank you!" In an interview, Recruit "Curly Sue" Brown says that Pupo is "fighting being here." So, no one likes Pupo. Got it.
