Mulder enters the Bedroom of Scully. The Holy Mother herself is sitting up on the bed, dressed in a light blue dressing gown with a white shawl collar -- classic updated Virgin Mary outfit -- holding a small bundle. She smiles at Mulder and then down at the obscured baby. I hope he's not all green and wack in there. "How's everybody doing?" Mulder asks. "We're doing just fine," Scully says, getting up and walking over to him, holding the baby, who is fussing a little bit. "Hey, now," Mulder says, and touches the baby's perfectly normal sweet human baby face with the tip of his finger. Scully smiles up at Mulder, and hands over the baby, who has stopped crying. Mulder breaks into a huge smile. Scully looks like she might start to cry. But happy tears, at long last. "What are you going to call him?" Mulder asks quietly. Scully tilts her head weepily at him, still smiling. "William," she says. "After your father." Mulder looks like he might cry, too. The action figures are gripping one another. Mulder and Scully look at each other and smile. "I don't know," Mulder offers. "He's got your coloring, your eyes. But he looks suspiciously like Assistant Director Skinner." Scully bursts into surprised laughter. Mulder chuckles. They stand very, very close. Scully solemns up and shakes her head. "I don't understand, Mulder," she says, "they came to take him from us. Why they didn't..." My old friend, the Ooohhh Eeehhhhhh Ahhhhhh music, starts up faintly. Mulder looks down at the baby. "I don't quite understand it either," Mulder admits. "Except maybe he isn't what they thought he was." They both look at the baby for a moment. "That doesn't make him any less of a miracle, though, does it?" Mulder asks. Scully's eyes search his face. She smiles. "From the moment that I became pregnant, I feared the truth," she admits. Oooooooohhhhh Eeeeeeeeeeeeh. "About how," she continues, "and why, and I know you feared it, too." Mulder looks at the baby intently, and then back up at Scully. "I think what we feared were the possibilities," he says softly. They stare at each other. "The truth we both knew." Scully looks at him. He looks at her. "Which is what?" she asks, softly. And Mulder leans in and kisses her, slowly and lightly, and then she leans in and takes his elbow, and the kiss deepens, and as the eeeeehhhhh ahhhhh music swells, we all back out of the room through the window, which frames neatly the surprising tableau of one very happy family.
And that's it. Season eight's a wrap. Big schmoochie shout-outs to the forums. I've got an entire armload of classic episodes to recap, all piled up on top of the VCR, so don't go too far, okay?
