So the show starts out with Jimmy in the shower singing "Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi. Foreshadowing, much? So Joey comes into the bathroom and tells Jimmy that he is hungry, and Jimmy is all surprised that Joey is awake, and then Joey walks into the kitchen and sees Brooke trying to make breakfast. Confusion and embarrassment abound between Brooke, Joey, and Jimmy. So, what -- Jimmy forgot to introduce the two of them the night before? Did she come over after Joey was asleep? Brooke was all ready to meet Joey in the last episode, and now she is trying to avoid meeting up with him in the apartment? What a stupid scene.
Bosco is driving to work, and it is apparently very cold because his windshield is all frosted up except for about two square inches that Bosco scraped to be able to see out. How hard is it to scrape frost from your windshield? I have had to deal with thick layers of ice on my windshield -- you turn on the car, put the defrost on the highest level, and start scraping. It's not rocket science. So then Bosco realizes that he can't drive very well with only two inches of visibility, so he stops his car and starts scraping more of the windshield. Two guys come over and pull a knife on him and demand his wallet. Mr. "No victims, only volunteers" instead pulls his gun on them, takes their wallets, makes them take their clothes off, and puts the clothes in a duffel bag, and then he drives away and leaves the men standing in the middle of the street in only their underwear. The hell? Hey Bosco, Satan called. Your reserved seat in hell has been moved to the Captain's Table. Enjoy!
The Fed Ex commercial for Combat Ranger dolls in Barbie clothes is funny. Too bad they really aren't for sale.
The firemen and paramedics are in the station watching a basketball game, and Jimmy gets all upset at the end of the game because he didn't get the cover. You would think he would know better than keep gambling after his "friend" Leo came to the station to threaten him about getting his money.
Bosco and Yokas are getting their radios, and Bosco is whistling and is all happy, and Yokas wonders if he got laid the night before. Bosco informs her that "some things are better than sex." Like robbery? Yokas asks if he has a fever. He tells her that he is capable of getting a rush out of other things in life. Like making fun of people who aren't white heterosexual Americans? Yokas is all, "Like sucking on whipped cream cans?" Hee hee! Good one, Yokas! Bosco sees the two guys he robbed in the precinct wrapped in blankets, and he tells Yokas that she has to help him because he made a big mistake. Yokas asks what the big mistake was, did he forget to untie Nicole this morning? Zing! He takes her to the locker room and tells her to check the bathroom stalls, then he tells her that he really screwed up. Yokas says, "Oh, don't tell me. You slept with the captain's daughter. Oh, whoops! You already did that!" Call her Butter, she's on a roll! So he tells her what he did, and then they hear a flush from one of the stalls. Sully comes out of the stall. D'oh! Bosco asks her why she didn't check the stalls, and she tells him she didn't think he was going to confess to armed robbery. Ty walks in and is all, "Armed robbery?" After last week I guess now Ty isn't such a stickler about the law, because he isn't ready to run out and tell on Bosco.
Doc and Carlos are in the ambulance, and Doc asks Carlos if he went to Vangie's house, and Carlos is all "no way!" Doc thinks that Vangie is going to think that he stood her up. Carlos has a big "whatever" face on. They park and go to help a teen gang-shooting victim. They see that he was shot in the side, and Doc remembers helping him with a gunshot wound to the calf a few weeks earlier. The kid just gives them attitude.
Kim and Bobby are taking equipment out of their ambulance, and Kim asks about Bobby's new girl Treva and mentions that "Treva" is a strange name. Bobby thinks the name Kim is just as strange, and then he starts making fun of Kim's name. Living in eighth grade again, Bobby? So they go to an old man's apartment and a woman lets them in and shows them to the man's bedroom. They check out the man and he is dehydrated, lying in his own feces, and has bedsores down to the bone. Kim asks the woman how she could let him get like that, and she tells them that she isn't his caretaker, she is just his neighbor, and that his daughters take care of him. Why in the world they even show this scene with the old man is beyond me, because it seems like they are going to start a storyline about the man and his daughters, but they don't. That's it. You never hear about the old man again. Whatever.
The naked robbers are looking at mug shot books; meanwhile, Bosco, Yokas, Sully, and Ty are spying from behind a set of stairs. Don't they have some problems to solve out on the streets? Bosco says to them that if he gets out of this he is going to...Sully completes his train of thought with "get a lobotomy?" I'm glad I'm not the only one who has run out of patience with Bosco's antics. Bosco decides that he needs to get rid of the guys' clothes and asks Yokas to help him. Sully and Ty warn her not to do it because she would be an accessory, and Bosco tells her he'll do anything if she helps him. Yokas tells him she will help him if he goes to a drug-prescribing therapist. Sully and Ty snicker, and Bosco agrees. Not that the writers will remember this scene and actually have him start therapy in the future or anything. The sketch artist walks by, and Bosco gets more angst-ridden.
Doc and Carlos are at the scene of a retaliation shooting. The victim is scared and is repeating, "I don't want to die!" Doc and Carlos try to help him, and the victim's eleven-year-old brother pulls a gun on them and tells them that if his brother dies, he'll find them. He hears sirens and runs off.
The victim is now in the back of the ambulance with Doc crying about not wanting to die and being scared. We find out that his name is Nathaniel, and then Nathaniel tells Doc he is sorry about his brother. They bring Nathaniel to the ER and Morales checks him out and gets him sent up for surgery.
Jimmy is at the station on the phone with his mom, and you can tell he is trying to bring up the subject of asking for money, but then his mom starts talking about how she wants the family to go to the Grand Canyon for his dad's birthday. Jimmy can't bring up the subject of another family non-payback loan, so he finishes up his call with Mom. What a swell guy, not asking for money from his parents to pay back his gambling debts. Some random fire department guy tells Jimmy that some guys came to see him, and that they will be back. Jimmy tells the guy to tell the captain that he had to take an emergency medical leave for an impacted tooth, and then he runs off. I can see why Kim was so enamored of him, what with his firm grasp of his responsibilities and his commitment to making sure they are taken care of.
Bobby and Kim are in the ambulance, and Kim gets a cell phone call from Joey's school. She needs to go to see the principal because Joey is in trouble.
Bosco and Yokas are in the car fighting about the "robbery," and Bosco tells her to pull over, so she does. He gets out and takes the bag of clothes and throws them in a dumpster. When he gets back in the car, Yokas tells him to keep a low profile and stop running off at the mouth. So, basically, he is going to get caught, because no one has been able to get him to shut up, much less have him do it on his own.
Doc and Carlos are at the ER, and Morales comes over and tells him that Nathaniel will be okay. Sully comes over and asks them about the kid who pulled a gun on them. Doc doesn't want to pursue it, but Carlos helps Sully with a description of the kid and gives him the address of the victim since it was his brother with the gun. Morales gets upset that Doc had a gun pulled on him, but Doc doesn't think it was a big deal. Carlos agrees to sign a complaint.
Kim and Bobby are waiting outside the principal's office, and Kim gets called into a really really big office that looks more like the size of classroom than an office. The principal tells her that Joey pushed two other kids off the jungle gym, and that one of them broke his arm. The mother of the unhurt boy is there, and she walks over to Kim and gives her the number of a child psychologist and then leaves with her son. Maybe Kim can give that number to Bosco. Joey goes out to sit with Bobby, and the principal tells Kim that the after-school care is hard on Joey since he is always the last one there, and that if he hurts another child he will no longer be able to stay at St. Edwards.
Doc and Carlos are in the ambulance fighting about the kid with the gun, blah blah blah, making a difference, going to jail, sociopathic kids, giving kids the benefit of the doubt, yadda yadda yadda, they are just kids. Is there going to be a weekly moral-issue debate between the two of them now? First it was the difference between the problems of gays and the problems of blacks, then it was dating patients, now this.
Bosco and Yokas are in the precinct house, and they find a Wanted poster with Bosco on it that describes him and the care he drives and says he is "armed and dangerous." Yokas tells him "they forgot 'and stupid.'" Bosco doesn't think the sketch looks like him, and then he decides they should go find the two naked robbers, but he isn't quite sure what he is going to do with them when they find him. Instead of Wanted on top of that flyer, it should say Dumb-Ass At Large.
Doc is knocking on an apartment door. A young woman answers. First he asks her about some kid named Kenny, and then he tells her that her son was shot and he took him to the hospital. He then offers to take her to the hospital too. She asks why he was asking about Kenny, and he tells her that the cops are looking for him and that he wanted to take Kenny to the hospital to see his brother to show him that gang violence is bad. Ah, Kenny is the kid who pulled the gun on Doc and Carlos. She tells him that she has worked hard to keep her kids out of gangs, but it doesn't make a difference, and then she tells him that letting Nathaniel die would be the only thing that would make a difference with Kenny. Ouch.
Office Depot and Golf -- perfect together!
Jimmy goes into a hardware store to see his brother. The brother sees Jimmy and immediately asks Jimmy how much money he wants. Jimmy hems and haws, and his brother tells him that if he wants money he can work at the store. Jimmy tells him that he owes $15,000 and that working at the store won't get him the money he needs. How in the hell do you get that far in debt from gambling on sports? I freaked when I lost twenty bucks at a roulette table. I guess I'm not a candidate for Gamblers Anonymous. So Jimmy's brother tells him he cleaned out his savings six months ago helping him, and he has no more money to give him. Jimmy leaves.
Doc and Carlos are at a third shooting, and the victim won't tell them what happened. Doc asks the people on the street if anyone saw anything, and one of the witnesses tells them that he heard shots and saw a young kid, about eleven years old, run off. Carlos looks all annoyed at the man like he is wasting his time, and tells the guy to tell the police who are standing behind him. Hey, you guys are the ones who asked for someone to say something about the shooting -- time don't ask for help if it wastes your time!
Back in Kim's kitchen, Joey is watching an old Warner Brothers cartoon. Product placement, much? Kim asks Joey what happened at school, and he keeps saying he doesn't know, that the kids made him mad. He then asks Kim if Jimmy is going to get married to someone else because there was a lady at Jimmy's place who wanted to make breakfast like they used to do. Kim is all surprised by this, and instead of talking about relationships and people getting remarried, she spouts off, "Your mommy will always be your mommy and your daddy will always be your daddy." Why this is a shock to her, I don't know, since Jimmy told her last week that he planned on introducing Brooke to Joey. Oh, that's right. That would mean consistency in this show. Sorry, my bad.
Sully and Ty are getting out of their car, and as they are walking to the precinct, they talk about how dumb Bosco is. Take it to my bulletin boards, please! They see Doc and Carlos and tell them that they picked up a kid who might be Kenny and they want to put him in a lineup.
Bosco and Yokas are in their car, and Yokas is babbling on about regretting helping him. They see the naked robbers, now with clothes on, going into a XXX store. Yokas doesn't want to wait around for them to get off in a porno shop and demands that Bosco take her to get food.
Jimmy is at a bank trying to get money out of Joey's college fund. The bank person tells him that the bank needs Kim's signature in order to withdraw money from that account. Jimmy gets all annoyed and leaves. Yeah, Jimmy. Get pissed because you can't steal from your own son. Nice. Real nice.
Carlos goes to the lineup and sees Kenny, but he remembers what Doc said about giving kids the benefit of the doubt, so he tells the cop running the lineup that he doesn't recognize anyone. He leaves and tells Doc that he couldn't ID Kenny. They get a call, and Doc wants to stay to see Kenny, but Carlos tells him he doesn't want to do anything else for Kenny and he takes the call.
Kim goes to Jimmy at the station and tells him about Joey, and then implies that it was Jimmy's rough playing and the violent toys he gives Joey that are to blame for Joey's behavior. Jimmy is not interested in talking, and Kim yells at him for not being responsible enough, since he leaves work and has girlfriends sleep over. Jimmy tells her that he only sees Joey ten hours a week, which leaves the rest of the time for her to be the crappy parent. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Kim! Kim just looks at him real hard.
Doc and Carlos are with a patient in the ER and they hear Morales yelling in Nathaniel's room. She comes out and tells them that Nathaniel has decided to leave. They go into his room, and Nathaniel is getting dressed. He tells them he's got business and things to do. They talk about his brother, gangs, getting out for his brother's sake. He won't listen and leaves.
Plug it in! Plug it in!
Kim and Yokas are at the bar/restaurant buffet and they are making small talk. They talk about working nights and not being able to see their kids, making parenting mistakes, and having a father in Joey's life. Last time I checked, Joey did have his father in his life. It isn't as much as some kids have, but it is a lot more than a bunch of kids with dead-beat dads, so I don't think Kim should complain so much about Jimmy not being around.
Doc and Carlos arrive at a crime scene that Sully and Ty are investigating. One guy is lying to a car, dead. Kenny is in the passenger seat of the car, and Nathaniel is sitting on the side of the road. Doc is with Nathaniel and asks where Kenny is, as Carlos checks out Kenny and yells to Doc that Kenny is dead too. Doc tries to start CPR on Kenny, but it's no use. Doc asks Nathaniel if he's happy now that his brother is dead. Nathaniel tells Doc that Kenny "died like a man." Doc brings Kenny's dead body over to Nathaniel and tells him he died like a scared kid. Sully suggests that Doc help Nathaniel since he is still bleeding. Doc doesn't care if Nathaniel bleeds to death. I guess Doc doesn't want to make a difference anymore.
Bosco and Yokas are in their car waiting for the no-longer-naked guys, and they are singing "Ninety-Nine Bottles of Beer on the Wall." I wonder if Bosco can remember the words. All of a sudden the guys run out of a jewelry store (how they got there from the XXX store, we'll never know, because that would give us continuity) and lie down on the sidewalk while someone starts firing a shotgun at them. Bosco and Yokas drive over to them and stop the guy from firing his shotgun again. While they are talking to the shooter, one of the robbers runs off, and Bosco chases him and finally gets him. As Bosco is cuffing the guy, he tells him not to look at him, which kind of reminds me of the guy in Blue Velvet sucking on the nitrous oxide and yelling at his wife, "DON'T LOOK AT ME! STOP LOOKING AT ME!" So he gets the guy to the car as Yokas is getting the other guy into the car, and he tells her to bring the guys in alone so they don't see his face, and he'll just tell everyone that he stayed behind to deal with the guy with the shotgun. Bosco is so smooth. Not.
Jimmy and Joey are in his car, and why Joey isn't in bed at that time of night is a mystery. Jimmy is telling Joey that he can't play wrestle with other kids like they do. As he is about to tell Joey all about placing bets and getting family members to pay for them, another car starts honking at them and pulls in front of Jimmy's car and makes them stop. Jimmy goes out to talk to them; it's Leo's goons coming to collect money or beat up Jimmy. Jimmy pulls out the "my kid is watching all of this" card, and they end up taking Jimmy's car, leaving Joey standing in the street with Jimmy holding his car seat.
Doc and Carlos are in the ambulance, and Carlos is all pissed off that Doc convinced him to try to help someone, and he tells Doc that instead of helping people all he does is hurt them. Doc feels bad.
There is a knock on Kim's door, and it's Jimmy and Joey but no car seat, and Jimmy tells Kim what happened, and of course she has a hissyfit. Jimmy listens to her, and then tells her he screwed up and promises that he is going to be a good father to Joey. Didn't he say that a few episodes ago when Joey had to spend the day with them at the station? Jimmy is such a man of his word. Except for the part about keeping his word.
Doc and Morales are in bed talking about Kenny, and Doc wonders if he really is hurting people. Doc, remember, you always hurt the ones you love. Morales tells him he is a good person, and then she snuggles up to him. You know he's gonna be good to her, if you know what I mean, and I think you do. Fade to black.
