Davina wants to attend the Dauphine Street Musical Festival, but Marcel wants her to stay home for her own safety. She pouts and stamps her tiny feet and makes his blood boil. Like, almost literally makes his blood boil, to show him she could really hurt him if she wanted. Instead of being furious at her little tantrum he's like, "Aw, kids are so cute!" He agrees to let her roam free for this one night, as long as she sticks close to Cami. This suits Klaus just fine, since he's got Cami compelled to do his bidding.
Since Davina is still refusing to hand over Elijah, Rebekah uses the internet to search all over town for every building that looks like what she remembers of the teen witch's loft. This eventually leads her to St. Anne's, which was also recently the site of a terrible slaughter. A young aspiring priest killed several people and then himself, with no apparent motivation. It turns out this guy was Cami's twin brother, and the reason she came to NOLA in the first place. The important thing is that Rebekah finds Elijah, but he tells her not to rescue him because he's learning about Davina while she experiments on him.
While at the music festival, Davina confesses she has a crush on a boy she knew from school before she was suddenly pulled out of classes. This boy plays the fiddle at the festival and unwittingly becomes a pawn in Klaus's game. Under Klaus's compulsion, Cami arranges a meeting between Davina and the boy. It all seems very sweet until Klaus shows up and nearly kills the boy. In exchange for Davina's grudging allegiance, he heals the young fiddler with his magical hybrid blood. Amazingly, this isn't the most dickish thing Klaus does in the episode, oh no! He makes Cami forget most of what her brother did so that she can focus all her attention on working against Marcel. Klaus cries about it, but whatever. It's still pretty awful.
Meanwhile, one of the witches convinces Hayley to see a backwoods doctor for a prenatal exam. The baby appears to be perfectly healthy, for being an unholy hybrid whateverthehell. But it turns out that the witch and the doctor are conspiring against Hayley for some reason, and sic a bunch of mysterious evil dudes on her. Who or what are they? Nobody knows yet. All they know is that someone – or something – even more mysterious helps Hayley kill them all. Stay tuned for the full weecap.
Want more? The full recap starts right below!Marcel walks into a church that's been cordoned off with police tape while Klaus's VO tells us his theory on good and evil. (It's all relative.) Upstairs is the loft where Davina lives and conducts her witchy experiments on a prone Elijah. So far, they seem to consist mostly of treating him like a pincushion. "What some call 'evil,' I believe to be an appropriate response to a harsh and unfair world," he says, as we transition into his office.
He's been talking to Cami, who is in his doorway looking like she shopped at a polygamist compound's garage sale. Seriously, the denim vest and curtain dress is just… what the hell, Cami? "No offense, but I'm not sure I follow why you've invited me here," she says. "Because I enjoy your company," he says, "and I sense you have the capacity to understand someone of my complexity." Instead of laughing in his face, she listens as he basically recaps the first couple of episodes for her. Do the writers just not trust the weekly intro to catch up new viewers? Because the dialogue is simply replete with exposition. "I don't believe in evil as a diagnosis," she says after listening to his spiel. She says he has a fear of abandonment. He's also a narcissist and a psychopath, but she kindly doesn't mention that. He says he wants to hire her to help him write his memoirs, which seems okay to her until he starts talking about vampires and witches. She freaks out, of course, so he compels her to calm down. It's better than Xanax, baby. The memoirs will have to wait; first he wants to talk about Marcel.
Speaking of that handsome devil, he's surveying Davina's handiwork. "Sucker's resilient," he says over Elijah's body. "He's like a cockroach in a suit." He's there to take Elijah back to his siblings, but Davina isn't through with her science-fair bug project. She changes the subject: "Tonight's the Dauphine Street Music Festival. I wanna go." Marcel points out that there are witches all over Dauphine Street that want to get their hands on her. She continues to plead and he continues to refuse, saying it's for her own good. As he turns to leave, she gives him a reminder of her abilities, heating up his blood just by focusing on it. Sweat beads up on his brow. At first he looks scared, then he laughs and gives in. "You going alone is too dangerous, but I'll introduce you to a friend of mine that's gonna be there." Davina bounces with happiness. Yay, tantrums!
Cami is hard at work at Rousseau's when Klaus walks in. "How is it that when you come up to me now," she whispers, "and no one else is around, I suddenly remember you just told me you're a vampire and you're mind-controlling me?" He smiles -- amused and proud -- as she goes on: "And then you leave, and I go back to thinking you're just some hot guy with a cute accent and money to burn?" His eyebrows go up at the "hot guy" mention. "That's how compulsion works, love," he says. She would like to talk about the science behind it, but he would rather talk about Marcel. She tells Klaus that he's bringing "a girl he's mentoring" to the festival tonight. He wants Cami to talk to the troubled girl. Klaus, realizing this is Davina they're talking about, insists Cami do as Marcel asked.
It's Agnes the witch's turn to keep watch over Hayley at the plantation, and she suggests wolf mama get prenatal checkup. Hayley scoffs because of the total ridiculousness of her situation. Rebekah, who's tapping away at her laptop across the room, feels bitter about not getting to be a mother herself. "I know a doctor out on the bayou," Agnes says. "I took the liberty of making an appointment, after hours. Just us -- vampires will never get word of it." Hayley rolls her eyes, but agrees to go. She and Agnes leave the room so that we can focus on Rebekah and Klaus, who has just stomped in from outside to make fun of his sister's Internet search. She's using aerial surveys to look for any building that has shutters like she remembers from Davina's loft. Klaus would rather scheme than search, and he's started to think that Marcel has lost control of Davina. "If Davina's loyalty to Marcel is strained, perhaps the young witch will be open to discussing a new alliance." Rebekah is utterly unsurprised. "As usual, your power grabs are more important than rescuing your brother." Klaus think he can accomplish both, because he's pretty full of himself.
Joshua, formerly known as Gay Best Friend, wants to see about getting himself a daylight ring. Or at least that's what he tells Diego, one of Marcel's higher-ups, when he finds him in the crummy biker bar the vamps use as their hangout. Diego seems none too pleased about the way Marcel is running things lately and can't wait until the Originals leave town. That's Rebekah's cue to stroll in and promise to make his dreams come true… in exchange for a little gossip. She plays up her heartbreak over Marcel and wants to know if he's seeing anybody besides the blond bartender. If she could just get some closure, she would leave New Orleans and take Klaus with her. All Diego tells her is that if Marcel did have somebody else, she would be in the Quarter. That narrows things down… a tiny, tiny bit.
Marcel walks his vamps around Dauphine Street and lays down the ground rules. He doesn't want any witches and he wants Cami and Davina watched at all times. As day turns to night, he leads Davina into Rousseau's. She's delighted by the music and the crowds, but mostly she's happy to see a particular teenaged boy across the room. Marcel doesn't notice her noticing him.
Hayley is rather unimpressed by the doctor's office. It looks like a shack from the outside, so who can blame her? As soon as Hayley is inside, Agnes calls someone on her sell. "Send them now," she says, "and tell them to do it quickly." She doesn't look especially happy about whatever is supposed to be done.
Davina watches her teenaged boy take the stage with his fiddle, while Cami and Marcel have a chat nearby. Under Klaus's compulsion, Cami acts like she wasn't at all freaked out by Marcel's temper at the masquerade last week. Thus reassured, Marcel leaves Davina in Cami's hands. Cami, of course, notices at once that Davina is making eyes at the fiddler. "So, what's his name?" she asks. "Tim," Davina says, blushing. They knew each other as children. "I had to leave school and I didn't get to say goodbye," she says. She looks at young Tim like she would very much enjoy saying hello in private.
Rebekah's search brings her to the church that serves as Davina's basement. A priest, in plainclothes, tells her the church is closed. "You want your horror fix, go take a ghost tour," he says. "I don't much care for ghosts," Beks says. She would rather talk about window shutters. "What's your name?" she asks. "Father Kieran," he says. She forgoes her own introduction and asks about what happened at the church. The walls are streaked with blood. He says the church has been abandoned since the massacre. This was apparently years ago, but the police tape is still up and the blood still looks fresh. Father Kieran has a flashback to a young seminary student killing nine of his fellow students with a sickle before drawing the blade across his own throat. Rebekah's like, yeah, whatever, that's Klaus's subplot. She compels the priest into telling her where the attic is. He should have been a smartass and told her it's at the top of the building, the same as all attics.
Rebekah finds Elijah in Davina's loft, but can't enter on account of being a vampire, and all. Elijah, still in his coffin, opens his eyes. Instantly, Rebekah finds herself in a memory from long ago. She finds Elijah there waiting for her, and runs to embrace him. He's showing her the night they went to the opera in New Orleans. Davina has removed the dagger, unaware that doing so would awaken Elijah. Duh-vina. To Rebekah's surprise, Elijah doesn't want to leave. He wants to work out a truce or something with Davina, and asks Rebekah to look after Hayley in the meantime.
In the gynecology shack, the doctor confirms via ultrasound that the baby's heart is healthy. As Hayley gets up off the exam table, the doc notices an odd birthmark on her shoulder. The only thing wrong, the doc says, is that Hayley's blood pressure is a bit high. While she goes off to get some meds, Hayley and Rebekah exchange texts. Hayley hears something howling outside, and cars driving up to the shack. The doc tries to inject Hayley with something, but Hayley headbutts her and dives out the window. Several burly men chase after her.
Klaus compels Tim, then gives Cami a note to pass along to Davina, supposedly from the boy. "She'll want to leave," he says. "Whatever you do, don't let her out of your sight." I hope Klaus practices good dental hygiene, what with the way he's always whispering right up in people's faces.
So off Davina goes to meet Tim at the church, while Cami hangs back a bit to watch them without being intrusive. The kids giggle and smile and twinkle at each other, and talk about why Davina suddenly had to leave school. She just says there was an emergency, and she can't go back. "I miss you," she says. "I miss seeing you play your violin." He plays a sad song for her. Klaus finds Cami and they talk about the massacre in the church. It was so pointless and brutal, she says. "In your life, have you heard of anything like that?" she asks. "A good man, an aspiring priest, just goes on a killing spree out of nowhere..." Klaus thinks the world is an awful place, but Cami disagrees. People are good until something makes them bad. But she doesn't know what made this seminarian go bad, this young man who also happened to be her twin brother. "I can't sleep," she cries. "I dream about what happened, and I hate that I couldn't help him." She worries that whatever happened to him will happen to her, too. Klaus looks sympathetic, but he has to get back to his plan. He compels Cami to leave.
Father Kieran catches up to Marcel at the festival. Apparently Marcel moved Davina into the church while Kieran was away. He tells Marcel that Rebekah came around snooping. The good priest is taking vervain, but couldn't let on, so he had to tell her what she wanted to know. Marcel and Kieran are about to get into a pissing contest when Josh interrupts to say that Diego has lost track of Davina.
Klaus asks for a word in private with Davina, which he gets by compelling Tim to count to 100,000 in the back of the church. Heh. "Your current dilemma strikes me as a case of poor alliances," Klaus says to the girl. He points out that Marcel is basically keeping her prisoner. "He keeps me safe," Davina says. Klaus promises he could do the same, while also allowing her freedom. Davina looks tempted. Then, for some unknown reason, Klaus switches to threatening mode, even though he was making inroads the other way. He makes noises about something bad happening to Tim. In return, Davina percolates Klaus's blood. He zips over to Tim and grabs him. "Such a shame to lose him -- just as you've found him again," he says. Davina breaks Klaus's legs with a flick of her wrist, but he heals almost instantly. "Your choice, little witch! Swear allegiance to me and the boy lives!" The candles behind Davina burst into flames. An eerie wind blows through the church. Davina screams and shatters all the windows, showering both Klaus and her young crush with shards of glass.
Hayley runs from her mysterious attackers through the woods. The men carry knives, machetes, a crossbow… Hayley still manages to take out three of them, screaming like a wild mama animal. Which, I suppose, she is. It's actually the best part of the episode. Her eyes glow wolf-yellow as more men advance on her. Suddenly, Rebekah is there, snapping their necks. "Who were they?" she asks. "Witches, warlocks… whatever," Hayley says. Whoever they are, a lot more are on the way. Rebekah takes two arrows in the heart; Hayley gets one, as well. They drop to the ground.
Marcel finds Cami at the festival and learns Davina went to the church. Despite having super vampire speed, it will take him a ridiculously long time to get there.
When Rebekah comes to, she finds all the unknown attackers lying dead nearby. Some of them look like they've been… munched on. Hayley is nowhere to be seen. She calls Klaus to tell him the bad news. He says he's on his way, but keeps working his scheme for a little while longer.
This means throwing Tim off the gallery and into the aisle below, saying he's run out of time to play nice. I suppose by Klaus's standards, all that stuff leading up to this was nice. Davina rushes over to him and holds his head in her lap. It was only about a 12-foot drop, but he apparently landed pretty hard. He's still breathing, but just barely. Klaus offers to heal him. "All you have to do is ask," he says. Davina cries and thinks, and cries some more. "Please," she finally says. Klaus feeds Tim a smidge of his blood, then takes the young boy's chin in his hand. "You will forget everything that happened after the concert, including the fact that you saw Davina." He zips out of there just in time to avoid running into Marcel, who is only now just walking into the church. Did he take the scenic route? Through the North Pole? "What are you doing here?" he asks Davina. "I live here," she says, full of resentment.
At the gyno shack, Klaus and Rebekah wonder who took Hayley and killed her attackers. Wolves howl in the distance. Brother and sister set off in the direction of the howling, only to find Hayley walking out of the woods toward them. Her clothes are tattered and dirty. "What happened?" Klaus asks. "I can't remember," she says. To Klaus's surprise, Hayley has completely healed from her injuries -- faster and more completely than a werewolf normally would. Rebekah figures the hybrid baby's blood healed her from within. "How did you escape?" Rebekah asks. "I think it was the wolf," Hayley says. "I think it's trying to protect me." Klaus vows to slaughter all the witches, starting with Agnes. But, hey, the good news is that Rebekah found Elijah, even if he isn't ready to come home. "All he asks is that we take care of you," she tells Hayley. Hayley lights up at this; Klaus pouts. He manages to put his bitter feelings aside when Hayley falters, though, and scoops her up in his arms to carry her home.
Biker bar. Diego gives Marcel some lip about the evening's failures, so Marcel snaps his neck. Marcel turns to Josh. "When he wakes up, tell him an apology would have gotten him a lot further than his attitude." Rebekah shows up to gloat a little bit, and to remind Marcel that she wants Elijah back. What happened to letting Elijah come home on his own time? They flirt a little bit, and although Marcel insists it's Cami he wants, he looks like he's maybe still hung up on Rebekah.
Klaus shows up outside Cami's bedroom window, asking to be invited in. "I recall you mentioned something about nightmares and insomnia," he says. "I believe I can help." She lets him in, then remembers everything they talked about at the church. She realizes that her brother may have been dealing with something supernatural, and not psychological. In turn, Klaus realizes that Cami will spend all her time searching for answers unless she forgets. "If I allow you to remember, the knowledge will eat away at you," he says. He says this will put her in danger. "You don't care about me," she says. He just wants her devoted to his plans. She cries and pleads with him, furious and terrified, but he grabs her face and holds her fast. He makes her think her brother was simply ill. "All you can do is move on," he says. Tears roll down his cheeks, but it doesn't make this any less horrible. He sits Cami down on the edge of her bed and kneels before her to promise that he'll find out what happened to her brother. "As for you," he whispers, "tonight you will sleep and dream of a world far better than this one..."
Everybody is sad tonight, including Davina, who has returned to her loft to contemplate her strange and lonely life. She hears the hinges on Elijah's coffin creak, and turns to find him standing there, still gray from his temporary death. "It's all right, Davina," he says. "I don't mean you any harm, though I do think it's time we had a talk." They make intense faces until the ending title card swallow them up. Hopefully, their talk will be a little less expository than most of the other chats we've seen thus far.
