It has been FOREVER. Cassie is sleeping when she is visited in her room by Jake. He tells her that she can't control the dark magic inside of her and insists that she's evil. Then, she pushes him really hard and he starts to bleed out of his mouth. Real gross. Cassie wakes. Thank Hermione it was only a dream. When he won't leave her alone, Cassie tells Adam about the dark magic stuff. He thinks it's no big deal.
Charlie's mother visits to check on Diana post-breakup with Adam. She visits Dawn and accuses her of having something to do with Henry's death and Jane's wackiness and vows to suss out her involvement, which freaks her out. Charles says that he will take care of it. Melissa is still the dark princess of Chance Harbor and it's pretty amazing. Faye tries to convince her that they should look into getting their powers back. So, whoa, Adam tells Diana about the black magic stuff and she gets mad and pushes him and he starts to choke! No blood out of the mouth stuff, because she freaks out and says that she didn't mean it and he stops choking. Weird. Doesn't sound very "written in the stars" to me. Everyone questions her about what's up and she gets upset but doesn't kill anyone.
Dawn shows up for dinner at Charlie's house and he's afraid that she is going to try to poison his mother. Faye and Melissa go to this dude's house to try to get their powers back and, as luck and the CW would have it, he's a stone cold fox. And, he says that he can help them. He makes this bloody star on Faye's chest and tells her to concentrate on something that she wants.
Diana's grandmother sensed something about Cassie and told her that she knows that she has black magic in her blood. She also says that she can perform a ceremony that can help her. Meanwhile, it looks like Faye's witch booster from the hot guy didn't work. Also, Melissa tells her that she's not going to follow her around anymore. Grandma Kate leads Cassie into the woods. She does this weird ritual and the wind starts blowing. She breaks a twig and Cassie falls to the ground. Diana finds some weird stuff in her grandmother's bag that tells her absolutely that Kate is trying to kill Cassie, so they go to look for her, but not before Grandma freaking buries Cassie alive (maybe not such a bad thing?). Cassie manages to use her mad face magic to blow the top off her casket. Kate tells Charlie that she was just pushing Cassie to see how powerful she was -- they can use Cassie to tip the witch scales to good from evil? Not really clear there. Faye finds out that hottie gave her a fake potion. She starts to wreck his place, but he shows up and says that he can help her. Those two are about to get down. Diana and Cassie are alone after the coffin scare and Cassie says that, though she thought she was going to die, she enjoyed the feeling of blowing the casket up and she would be dead without her black magic. Also, Jake is watching from outside!
Want more? The full recap starts right below! It's been a while. What I'm absolutely sure of is that, during their time off, the people running this show got to the business of picking out what's working on this program and amping it up and losing the rest. Granted, it's kind of impossible at this point to get rid of Cassie and she's such a drag, so fine, just make the bitch evil. We can all deal with that, right? Well, here we are. It's going to be great. Right?
We open with Cassie sleeping. She's oddly more energetic in this state. She opens her eyes and goes to her bedroom door. Jake is there and it frightens her. He's spooky and says that her front door was open. Now, obviously this is a dream, because Jake's hair is in a dreamscape pompadour, but I find that the writers on this show solve too many narrative problems with things like, "Your front door was open." She acts frightened and reminds him that he is a witch hunter. But, then he reminds her that he saved her and they weren't very happy about that. He says that he's there to talk about dark magic and tells her that he was wrong before- she can't be helped. "You think I'm evil?" she asks. For Christ's sake, better than boring. He says that she knows. She has evil blood. Balcoin blood. The devil's blood. Then, her face screws up and she pushes him really hard. He stands stunned for a moment, then grabs his throat and falls to the ground. Bloods spilling out of his mouth and he's making all sorts of dying sounds when Cassie wakes with a start. Not so fast. Chris Zylka, the guy playing Jake, is so sick pretty that it's almost distracting me from the total aimlessness of this dark magic shiz. His skin is like a buttered roll. That is a very good thing.
Cassie is going through some book about black magic when Adam knocks on her door. He says that she doesn't look sick. Ah. So, she's playing hooky. Pure evil. She says that there's just a lot to deal with, Jake being hunted, Adam himself. Poor thing. She doesn't mention that she's evil. He asks why the witch hunters had been afraid of her, so they start studying the dark magic stuff together. He's skeptical and seems to make Cassie feel a little better. She says that Jane has gone to "healer" because she just isn't herself. So, no one's looking after her? She doesn't have to go stay with Diana or something? What's happening to Jake's house?
At Diana's, there's someone at the door and it's freaking Dee Dee McCall from Hunter! But, here they're calling her "Grandma Kate." I wonder if she's undercover. Sexiest cop of the 80's, folks. Purple eye shadow for DAYS. Anyway, Diana's psyched to see her and efficiently (because the writers have SO MUCH story that they want to fit into this hour, I'm sure) tells her right away that Charlie is dating Dawn. She says it's just like high school all over again and says that Charlie always had a crush on her. Nobody in that freaking group dated the actual people they wanted to be with, did they? All this writing in the stars but everybody in Chance Harbor is apparently star-writing illiterate. Anyway, Charlie shows up and says, in a clunky way, that Diana would know all about power couples. Weird. She goes upstairs and Dee Dee tells him that Diana and Adam broke up. She didn't tell Charlie. Hmm. She just tells him that girls don't tell their father's such things.
At Chance Harbor High, Melissa is getting something out of her locker and I can't tell you what a relief it is to see her increasingly dour little face. She's the best thing going on this show. Here's hoping they do something, anything, with this actress who is working so hard to manifest some sort of arc for her character. She evolves with every episode. When she closes her locker, Faye is all "boo." Melissa walks away and says that she isn't in the mood. Faye tells her to drop the sad sack act. Melissa says that she feels like she's being disrespectful to Nick's memory by enjoying life and Faye points out that Nick would never take that point of view himself. Not bad logic. Faye says she knows a way for them to get their solo powers back.
Dee Dee visits Dawn at her office, ostensibly to see if she is fine after Henry's death. Dawn is all sweetness and light but Dee Dee ain't buying it. She says that something is going down in Chance Harbor. First Henry, then Jane's "neurological issues." She's skeptical of Dawn's interest in Charlie and says that she used to "use people then toss them away." Ouch. Dawn tells her that she has a meeting and Dee Dee moves to leave. First, she tells Dawn that she's going to find out what's going on.
At the abandoned house, Diana sees Adam reading a book about dark magic. He tries to change the subject (because Cassie doesn't want everyone to know about her being Satan's kin and all) but she pulls it out of him. Cassie enters just as he's telling Diana and gets really mad. Adam tries to explain but she pushes him in anger and he grabs his throat just like sexy dream Jake did! But, there's no blood and Cassie rushes to his side and says she didn't mean it and whatever was afflicting him seems to go away. Everybody is freaked.
Later, Faye and Melissa are there too. Melissa points out that the same thing happened with Luke, but Faye corrects her. Luke burst into flames. Melissa asks in the coldest way possible, "What's wrong with you?" Oh man. Cassie is all, "I don't know!" and runs out of the room, whereupon Faye remarks that it's always the short quiet ones that you have to worry about. Adam follows Cassie and explains again that he wasn't talking shit about her to Diana. She's upset about almost killing him, so she leaves.
Dawn meets Charlie and is really upset about her meeting with Dee Dee. He says that no one knows about them, but she says that Ethan does and told Henry that they were practicing. I didn't remember that being said before. Anyway, Dawn says that they have to get rid of her. And, she's not talking about asking her to leave. She wants to kill her, but Charlie insists that they are not doing that. He says he'll take care of it.
Diana walks in on Cassie in her room as she's looking over an attraction spell. She wants to bring Jake back to town. Sure, he's a witch hunter, but he risked his life for her and Adam and he knows about dark magic. Diana just insists that Cassie stay with her until Jane gets home, which she should have done a while ago, right?
Meanwhile, at the abandoned house, Faye shows Melissa a page she tore out of Cassie's Book of Shadows. She reckons that the magic being practiced in the spell is different than what the others practice. And, she thinks maybe part of what's different about it is that you can do it alone. She thinks the botanical nature of the spell may be the secret. I can't believe she would make that leap, but whatever. She shows Melissa a website that she found when she googled "Voodoo Botanica 50-mile radius of Chance Harbor," I shit you not. It belongs to fancily named Lee LeBeque.
Diana introduces Cassie to Dee Dee, who realizes who she is when she shakes her hand. They're about to sit down for dinner when Dawn arrives. She gives Charlie a big kiss and invites herself for dinner. At dinner, Dawn pours some wine for Dee Dee but Charles pours it out. His excuse is that he saw some cork in the glass. That's the most organic thing that has happened on this whole series. Dawn follows him into the kitchen and says that she's not trying to kill Dee Dee. Whatever.
Melissa and Faye go to some ranch-style home outside of town and are about to leave because they just can't imagine that spell-brewing happens inside, when the hottie who played Hastings on Friday Night Lights answers the door. Buy whatever he's selling. That's my advice. Faye tells him that she wants a consultation. He's about to take them to his garage and Faye flips because she finds that unprofessional. They tell him that they need help with a spell. They show him the page from the Book of Shadows and he tells them that it's dangerous.
Diana and Cassie are getting ready for bed when Adam shows up. He apologizes to Cassie for telling Diana about her dark magic. And, he says that everyone should know about what's going on with her and it's probably not that big of a deal. Then, he leaves. He couldn't have just waited until the day?
At Lee's he does this spell that is supposed to help Faye tap into her powers. He does some chanting, then begins to unbutton her jacket, which Melissa stops. But Faye takes it off herself and he traces a start on her chest with some blood-colored liquid. He tells her to give the spell until tomorrow and she should think about something that she really wants. Then they leave.
That night, Cassie wakes up frightened. She pours herself some OJ and Dee Dee talks to her. She knows about the dark magic. She tells her that she can overcome the darkness, but it requires a spell to draw out the darkness. Cassie is totes on board. The day, Cassie tells Diana that they'll be doing the spell that night. Diana says that she can trust her grammie. Meanwhile, Faye is trying to perform a spell with Melissa looking on. It doesn't work, so she decides to go eff up this Lee character. She tells Melissa to come with her, but she refuses, stating that she's not going to be following Faye around anymore. Faye takes the news well and leaves without her.
Dee Dee takes Cassie to the woods. Cassie seems nervous. Back at her house, Diana looks in her grandma's bags and finds witch stuff, including some sort of root that gives her pause. So, Dee Dee has built a whole altar for the occasion. They start the spell and the wind starts blowing. It's very administrative, the whole affair. Lots of very specific steps. Not a lot of heart. At one point, Deeds snaps a twig and Cassie passes out. Meanwhile, Diana finds Adam at the abandoned house. The stuff she found in her grandma's bag is a plant that can kill witches. It's what the witch hunters put into the bottles that had their essence. They think she's going to try to kill Cassie. Maybe she's suicidal?
So, Dawn and Charlie meet. He tells her that he thinks she's right about his mother snooping for witch stuff. He says that he'll talk to her but Dawn is like ENDGAME, bitch must die. Charlie tells her to get out of his car. I don't see things working out between those two.
Cassie wakes up in a box. Deeds is about to put the lid on it and says that the earth has to bleed the darkness from her. That sounds like it could hurt. She puts the lid on and this sheet with some sort of a symbol painted on it over the top. Then, she puts a knife through it, barely missing Cassie's hand. She says that Cassie must die with her dark magic and, as the soil surrounding the box starts to cover it magic-like, she walks away. So, Cassie is naturally freaked. Then, she calms down and gets her dark magic face and the top blows off the box. Diana and Adam are arriving at just this moment and ask her if she's alright. She doesn't know
Deeds is getting ready to leave when Charlie confronts her. She tells him that she tried to kill Cassie, but just to test her to see exactly how powerful she is? I know, stick with me here. She says that Cassie is the one they've been looking for- the one who can tip the scales between good and evil. Charlie says he's going to tell the elders and she tells him that she knows he's involved in Henry's death and Jane's "demise." Wow. Seriously, the woman isn't dead. Why did she just say that? Do they not know what that word means. Do I? She tells him to come out of the darkness.
Faye is destroying Lee LeBeque's studio when he shows up- all calm. He confesses to not being legit, but he does know about magic. He thinks he can help her reclaim her power. This could get hot.
Diana apologizes to Cassie for telling her to trust Dee Dee. She says that she hopes that she's gone forever. She asks how it "felt," and Cassie says she had never been so afraid. BUT, what was more scary was how she enjoyed the power. Diana asks her just how powerful she is and she doesn't answer, but we see Jake standing outside looking up at her window. Powerful enough to bring him back!
