Nick and Melissa have been working hard to learn how to take her clothes off with magic. I'm really proud of those kids. Cassie looks up information about Heather Barnes, her mother's friend and an acquaintance of Zachary Larson. Cassie finds out that Heather has a brother and decides to go find him. Adam agrees to take her. Faye still hates being bound to the other witches.
Adam and Cassie go to Finn Creek to look for Heather's brother. It's a bad part of town and we know that because there is evidence of rust and weathering. They find Heather, who has apparently been in a catatonic state for 16 years. It's creepy. Her brother is creepy too. Suddenly, Heather lunges and grabs Cassie's arm and says her name. Lots of pants with shit in them at that point. Heather goes right back to being catatonic and Cassie sees an imprint/tattoo thing on the inside of her wrist. Cassie shows Adam her family book. Faye is not happy about Nick and Melissa dating.
Cassie looks for a spell that can help Heather. Diana intervenes and says that it's too risky to try a spell of that magnitude. Melissa sees Nick talking to another girl and freaks out, though she didn't freak out when he treated her like actual crap for the longest time. Cassie gets Faye to join her and they go back to Heather's place. They sneak in and find Heather sitting in her chair. Her brother should really put a pillow behind her head. The girls try a spell, but it doesn't seem to work. They sneak out just as her brother gets home. Later that night, Heather comes back to life and she's pissed. She throws her brother against and walks out.
Nick and Melissa patch things up for the moment. Diana finds out that the spell that Cassie wanted to (did) perform is black magic and really hardcore. Heather goes to Cassie's house and asks for Amelia. She tells her that she's dead but that she's her daughter. Heather tells Cassie that Amelia was trying to save all of them. She says evil is inside of her and she starts writhing on the ground. It's really kind of painful to watch. Good actor. Meanwhile, Adam keeps trying to call Cassie to tell her that the stuff with Heather is serious. No kidding. Faye answers the phone. Amelia put the tattoo on Heather to stop the demon that is apparently inside of her. Faye goes downstairs just as Heather throws Cassie against the wall (the demon snake thing inside of her goes to her head). The demon's flying all around the house after Faye. Nick and Melissa see the goings on from across the street. Cassie throws Heather off of Faye and they start trying to get outside. Nick and Melissa show up and Heather runs off. She makes it to the street just as her brother shows up and she gets hit by a car. Sad. As Heather's corpse is being taken away in an ambulance, we see the demon snake hitch a ride on Nick's bag. Faye seems a little jealous that Melissa goes home with Nick afterwards. Later, Adam shows up at Cassie's house to "make sure she's OK." The demon sneaks into Melissa's ear as she's sleeping to Nick. Gross.
Want more? The full recap starts right below! We begin again with the perpetually unsupervised Nick and Melissa getting dressed in the morning. Melissa asks Nick if he likes her new blouse. He does. He also likes to kiss her neck as she's getting dressed. Nick gets hotter with every episode. Who's with me? She stops him and says that she's going to be late for school. "What could be better than school?" she jokes. Well, how about opening your blouse with special magic powers? This is what Nick does, because when he's by himself, he has to undo buttons manually. This is so much better. Nick does have an ethical standard though. He says that some things should be done by hand and starts kissing her and unhooks his bra with his own calloused fingers.
Cassie is at home researching Heather Barnes. Later, she talks to Diana about her findings. After the fire, Heather spent two years in a psychiatric hospital. After she was released, she "dropped off the face of the earth." She had a brother in Finn Creek -- Cassie asks Diana if she'll drop by his place with her. She can't make it. Make what? That's Adam. He's there now. Diana fills him in and Adam says that Cassie shouldn't go to Finn Creek alone, because it's a sketchy area. Though she resists, Diana insists that Adam accompany Cassie.
Faye is at her locker and unable to open her combination lock. That school must have the toughest combination locks ever. They're always having problems. Suddenly, it opens. Hey, it's Melissa. Faye says that she hates this binding stuff. Why be a witch if you can't do magic by yourself? She wants to be like The Craft with hair color changes and spells on boys. This seems like the absolute truest thing. I can see Faye caring nothing more than about learning how to change her hair color with magic. She asks Melissa to practice with her later, but she's hanging with Nick. Faye reminds her that it probably won't last. Not nice. She says that Nick is a dog and has hit on every girl in school -- though we haven't seen him speak to even a single person who isn't a part of the Circle -- and she doesn't want to be that loser girl who thinks that he'll change for her. Melissa's all, fine, he's a loser, I'm a loser. She seems upset but that's a surprisingly effective way to end that conversation.
Adam and Cassie are in Finn Creek, an old partially-abandoned fishing village. It's scary in the way that unmowed lawns and rust are scary. Sure, you might get tetanus, but the place doesn't look that dangerous otherwise. They knock on a door. A guy with a huge forehead answers and he actually does seem a little scary. They say that they are looking for Wade Barnes, well, actually Heather Barnes. He's Wade. They explain that Heather and Amelia were friends and he does not seem pleased to hear Amelia's name. He's cryptic but says that Heather won't speak to them. Adam's all, shouldn't she decide? Fine, he says, come on in. They find Heather sitting in a chair and... she's completely catatonic. She hasn't moved in 16 years. No one knows what has caused her state. Cassie leans forward and whispers to Heather that she's sorry and goddammit if she doesn't reach out and grab Cassie and hold on as Wade and Adam pull her away. If you've been waiting all this time just to really scare someone, Heather? Well played.
Adam extracts blood from Cassie's fingertip then wraps it in a tissue. He's holding her hand when Diana walks in -- NATURALLY. Diana doesn't think it's a good idea. What if they do the spell wrong and it hurts her worse. Another aside: Diana's a great character, right? She's this prototypical good-girl-on-TV person, yet the circumstances of her character make her less than totally trustworthy. I like it. More scary Diana, please. Cassie says that they will be careful, but Diana doesn't know how she could even know a spell, since her spell book doesn't have anything like it. NEW BOSS WITCH IN TOWN, Diana! Adam tells her that Cassie has a book. Diana is clearly bothered but makes it about the spell. She says that it's too risky and they won't help her, so she won't be able to do the spell. Adam tells Cassie that he will talk to her.
Nick finally comes into The Boathouse and Melissa has obviously been waiting and fuming. She asks him who "the chippy" that he was talking to was. That's one of my favorite phrases! He's not taking this seriously. He asks if he's not allowed to talk to girls anymore. She says that Faye was right and she was hoping that she'd have a few minutes with him before he became a douche. Now he's taking this seriously. He thought things were going well. She stomps off. Not going well.
Cassie is in the abandoned house looking through stuff when Faye arrives. I seriously think that abandoned cottage chic will be the design craze. This place is fantastic. Cassie explains that she wants to undo a spell and Diana and Adam won't help her. Then, Faye sees that Cassie has her own Book of Shadows. I guess that's what we call them? They should just have a glossary. Faye says that she will help her with the spell if she lets her look at the book.
Looks like that worked, because here we are in Finn Creek. The girls are hiding and watch Wade leave his house. They sneak into his place and find Heather, who could probably use a neck pillow. That's the first thing she's going to talk about when they wake her up. Faye says that Cassie's mom must have been "one mean-ass witch" to do this to a person. The rub the potion on Heather's wrist scar thing, then start chanting. It doesn't work at first, so they chant again, real intense this time. It still isn't working and Wade comes home. He hears a noise and runs into the room where his sister is, but the window is open and no one is there. He puts a blanket on Heather.
Faye and Cassie are walking home and lamenting that the spell didn't work. They were hoping to find out what happened the night of the fire. Faye reminds Cassie that she lost her father that night and wants to know as well. They're all in the same boat -- a boat full of "sad witches." Faye wants to look at Cassie's book and she agrees, begrudgingly. Meanwhile, this snake-looking things starts to move under Heather's skin, where the scar is. It moves towards her heart and suddenly she's awake with a start. She stands up and seems happy for a second, then she snarls and throws poor Wade, Wade who has been taking care of her sad ass for 16 years, against the wall and walks out.
Later, Melissa is waiting for Nick at his place. Waiting to apologize. Also, there is a really great song playing. It sounds a little like "We Belong" by Pat Benatar, so, YES. She says that she doesn't have the right to be jealous, since she's not his girlfriend. They're good. Whoever is doing Nick's hair and lipgloss deserves an Emmy.
Diana and Adam are meeting at The Boathouse. She did a little research because the mark on Heather's wrist concerned her. She found something in her book that referenced black magic in regards to the sign. Demons. It looks like Heather was possessed and the spell was used to keep the demon from escaping. Adam wants to call Cassie. Diana doesn't think it's necessary because Cassie didn't perform the spell, but he says that she still needs to know.
Cassie and Faye are at Cassie's place, sans Granny again. Oh, now I get it. When Cassie said her grandmother was working a double shift, that was a way to get her out of the way for later too. Because working at 4 in the afternoon isn't exactly burning the midnight oil. Clunky. There's a knock at the door and Cassie goes to answer it but just finds the door opened. She locks it and goes back inside. She's walking towards the kitchen to get the non-carb snacks that Faye requested when Heather pops out from behind a corner. Yikes! She asks for Amelia and starts scratching her skin. She says that Amelia is dead and she starts crying. She tells Heather that she's her daughter and Heather says that she tried to help Amelia take her away from there. Heather says that, the night of the fire, Amelia was trying to protect all of them, but evil still got inside of her. She says it hurts, then she throws herself against a wall. She says that Amelia couldn't get rid of the evil, but she made the pain go away. Now it's back. Oops. Then, she throws herself to another wall and cries for help. She writhes on the ground in pain -- damn this lady is really good, though her sassy blunt cut after 16 years in a rocking chair is a little unrealistic. Hey wig crew, get to work!
Diana and Adam are trying to call Cassie and Faye answers. Faye makes sexy jokes. Downstairs, Heather comes to and Cassie realizes that she undid a spell that was intended to help Heather. She says that she looked for Amelia at the boatyard the night of the fire. Then, she says that where there are witches, evil follows. The same is true of matching track suits. The bad folks were trying to use the Circle's power and one of the demons got inside of Heather. She starts to freak out again, then she throws Cassie against a wall and knocks her out. Faye comes downstairs with the phone and finds Cassie, just as Heather approaches with a fire poker. So, naturally, running and screaming ensues. Heather fucking flies up the stairs after her. This is not good. She tries to get out of the window, as Nick and Melissa are making up and out across the way. They see what's going on and run to help as Heather beats the hell out of Faye. Cassie comes to and helps Faye and they try to run out of the house. Not so fast. Demon Heather makes all of the lights go out. They open the front door and Nick and Melissa are there. The girls are about to escape when Heather grabs Cassie and throws her against yet another wall. Then, Nick gets in the middle and squares off with her.
I guess the demon figures it's no match for Nick, so Heather runs off. She makes it to the street when she is stopped by Wade. He calls her name and she turns to look at him just in time to be plowed down by an SUV. Ouch. He drops to his knees as the driver is saying that she came out of nowhere (not exactly). Heather is dead and is carted away by an ambulance. Before she leaves, the demon snake slithers out of a cut in her arm and onto Nick's bag. Wade says that she's at peace now. Melissa leaves with Nick, which only increases her jealousy. Diana says that there's too much they don't understand and they have to be careful about their magic.
Later, Nick and Melissa go back to his place. They agree to spend the night together, but first Nick says that he's not going to be the guy Melissa wants him to be. He's going to disappoint her. She says that's the sweetest thing he has ever said to her. She has issues. Cassie tries to clean up a little when there's another knock at her door. It's Adam. She shakes her head with a smile and answers. She asks if Diana knows that he's there. She doesn't. He was worried about her and wanted to help her clean. She lets him. He asks if she has a broom and she says of course, she's a witch. I love the witch humor. Adam agrees with Cassie's desire to find out what happened at the fire, even if Diana doesn't. Meanwhile, Nick and Melissa are asleep when the demon slithers into Melissa's ear!
