With her former foster brother on the scene, Emanda finds herself in an awkward situation. On the one hand, here's an important familial (albeit ridiculously contrived) link to her past. On the other, this person could very easily expose her. After some initial interactions, Eli calls Ems out in private for being the real Amanda Clarke. It turns out Eli has a bit of a sordid past, himself, so Emanda offers to pay him off and get Nolan to wipe his record clean so he can leave the Hamptons with a fresh start. Inexplicably, she follows through on her end of the deal before Eli gives any real indication that he won't renege on his end of the bargain. Now, Emanda has created a powerful enemy for herself -- a guy with some money, a clean record, and who is charismatic enough to gain the admiration of the Graysons.

Here's how bitch-move this guy is. Within minutes of being handed a check for $100,000 by Ems, Eli turns around and hands it to Victoria as a donation to the Amanda Clarke foundation the Graysons have just launched as a front for their own assets. He even gives Emanda a little stare-down to say, "Yeah. What?" Again, Ems has no recourse because she and Nolan have just given him carte blanche. Victoria likes the cut of this guy's jib. Within a day of meeting him, she names him her co-chair for the Amanda Clarke Foundation. Sure, why not?

The guilt of everything that comes with being Daniel Grayson has really gotten to him. Every scene he's in there's a glass of liquor in his hand. Seeing this, Aiden starts hovering a bit too close because he's still gunning for a spot on the board at Grayson Global. When Daniel almost gets himself in a bar brawl, Aiden intervenes, only succeeding to repulse Dan. Lucky for Aiden, Conrad saw the whole thing, noting the lengths this man would go to protect Daniel. Conrad appoints Aiden as the Treasurer of something or other, much to Daniel's chagrin.

Sure it's two episodes later, but Jack suddenly is wondering, "Hey! How did I end up back on shore that night on a raft? Who did that?" He does some half-assed investigating at the docks, but still very easily deduces it was Nolan who saved him. This only serves to drive a further wedge between Jack, Ems and Nolan. To try and save some face, Nolan doctors up some files and documents that say Kenny Ryan was the one who bought the speedboat involved in some of the events of that night. Jack appears to forgive Nolan, but Jack's learning to put on a fake face from all his dealings with the Graysons.

Once Nolan and Ems discover the Graysons' plan to use Amanda Clarke's charity as a front so their assets can't be frozen, the obvious course of action is to infiltrate that account and ruin the family financially. It's simple revengology. Instead of using his normal avenues of achieving all the cyber crime he normally perpetuates, Nolan decides to use Carrion to bypass the firewalls of the Graysons' account -- simply to establish for us that there should be nothing in the world that could stand in his way. When Nolan gets to the last line of defense, he's met with an impenetrable block on the account with the ASCII and l33t calling card of "Falcon," a coder that Nolan idolized as a young man and who must be currently on the Graysons' payroll. So... let me get this straight: The Initiative has been after Carrion because it's the be all, end all of malicious code, but meanwhile they couldn't just tap the guy who can outcode Nolan well enough to stop Carrion? Maybe this is why the Initiative is so inefficient that we still don't know what they're doing after two season.

It's almost nightfall in the world where David Clarke is still able to hold his daughter close and read her a bedtime story in front of the fireplace. Little Amanda finishes each line her father reads from "The Little Match Girl" like she's heard it hundreds of times, but it will never get old. Emanda voice-over: "To carry a secret is to play with fire. Try to pass it on and you risk hurting someone else. Hold onto it and eventually you'll get burned." Fade into the future where Aiden pokes the embers in the fireplace of an unfamiliar house. Ems enters, asking if they can be sure nobody knows about this place. It's their save haven, Aiden says. Emanda has just come back from the cemetery and her encounter with her foster brother Eli. As best as she can tell, Eli didn't recognize her. Aiden asks if there's any reason to believe he might have ill will towards her. Ems: "I burned down our house." Oh. FLASHBACK: Little Amanda lights a match, waves it out and uses the burnt end to scrawl an infinity x infinity symbol to a bunch of other ones on a piece of paper. Little Eli walks in to ask why she always draws the same thing. Goooooood question, Eli. It's a reminder that her father lied to her, she replies. Their foster mom comes upstairs because she smells the burned matches, so Amanda goes to hide while Eli steps up to take the punishment. He's told he needs to get in "the bin." You know... with the other orphans nobody wants. Am I right? Oh, whatever. /FLASHBACK. Ems explains to Aiden that Eli was always her protector in return for the promise she'd never leave him. "And I never did... until I set that fire." So... you did leave him.

Grayson Manor. Charlotte hands over photos from Jack and Amily's wedding to Victoria at the breakfast table for use in the launching of a charitable foundation in Amanda Clarke's name. This sort of thing is apparently all it takes to get Charlotte behind her parents. She tells them how proud she is of them before heading off to school. Daniel walks in as she's leaving, running on no sleep. He can't stop thinking about what the Initiative might have in store for him. Frankly, if you're going to let an international terrorist organization get in your head and run your day, you're just not cut out for this life. Being the dimwitted, alcoholic son of a well-to-do family seems to be all Daniel can muster these days. Conrad advises his son that the plan should be to deflect anything that may come their way onto someone else -- namely Aiden Mathis. That doesn't really jive with Dan since Aiden has recently proven his loyalty to him and the company. After David and Amanda Clarke, Daniel doesn't see why another innocent person should pay for his family's sins. He storms off.

Stowaway. Jack's insurance agent has documents laid out on a table for him, explaining that Amily's policy won't pay out until the criminal investigation is over. He looks over at Carl, thinks for a moment and offers up some consolation for Jack. He can set up a life insurance policy so that Carl will be OK if there should be another tragedy. Thanks, guy. Way to jinx us. Declan walks in as the insurance guy leaves. Jack's still in a funk, trying to make sense of what happened that night. Not helping. Dec says he's still wondering why Nolan told him Jack and Amily had checked in safely at the hotel. Declan leaves for school as Jack's phone rings with a call from Victoria. She drops the idea of a charity in Amanda Clarke's name on him. There's no protesting from Jack, and in fact he responds as if this plays into some sort of plot he's concocting.

Victoria hangs up after receiving Jack's blessing for the Amanda Clarke Foundation and is greeted by Emanda who caught the tail-end of the conversation. She lauds the idea, extending a check for a quarter-million dollars and her self-nomination as co-chair for the foundation. Victoria looks at the check like she's just been handed a dead cat. Awkwardly, she says she'll consider Ems, but it really doesn't sound like she will. Lucky for her, the doorbell just rang and her maid is interrupting by trying to play gatekeeper. She announces that someone claiming to be Amanda Clarke's brother is at the door. Eli hustles past the maid, feeling the need to clarify that he is Amanda's foster brother probably because he is an African American man in this whitewashed mansion. He goes right up to Victoria, extends his hand and says he's very honored to meet her. Ems watches this all happen while trying to hide the horror from her face. She does a pretty decent job.

Reunited and it feels so cliché. 3D title card and commercials

Victoria and Eli continue their handshake, as he explains being invited to Amily's funeral by Charlotte with not enough lead time to attend. Victoria introduces Ems, causing Eli to do a double-take when he sees her face. Emanda explains it away because they did happen to meet at the cemetery in the middle of the night recently. Of course, nothing weird about that. Eli tells Victoria he was on business in London when he heard the news. He was dealing in rare books, he says. Ems raises her eyebrows with disbelief when he says this, but it goes unnoticed because Victoria's busy throwing out a guest of honor invitation to Eli for the inaugural Amanda Clarke Foundation benefit. Before Emanda can scream, her phone rings. It's Nolan hanging out outside of Casa Emily. Ems uses this phone call as an opportunity to excuse herself. She tells Victoria she'll be in touch with her about the co-chair thing. As Emanda is walking out, Eli calls out after her to say he can't wait to get to know her and anyone else who knew his sister. There's a hint of cynicism in his voice. Ems brushes it off as best as she can as she leaves, but then she overhears Victoria suggest Eli go pay Jack a visit. It's a race against time to undo the false past! ...or something.

Hurriedly, Emanda explains to Nolan what just happened with Eli as they enter Casa Emily. She really doubts Eli's story about being an antique book dealer, but the only thing that really matters is the potential for him to expose her. With Padma in seclusion until she makes contact with the Initiative, seeking out background info on Eli will be a welcome distraction for Nolan. Honestly, anything would probably be a welcome distraction for Nolan these days -- the poor guy. Despite not currently being on speaking terms, Ems rushes off to go intercept Jack before Eli can get to the Stowaway.

With a nearly empty tumbler pressed against his nose, Daniel tries to tread his guilt at his desk at Grayson Global. He's drowning. His father catches him in this state of depression, noting that he won't find relief at the bottom of that glass and doing so while oddly wearing a cardigan. Really weird to see Conrad not wearing a suit in this setting. Daniel can't so easily forget Amanda Clarke, whose blood is on their hands. Conrad suggests the he get over it like he and Victoria have done by getting behind the Amanda Clarke Foundation. That's cute. Didn't they start a charity for the victims of the terrorist attack they helped fund? At the very least it's something that might help Daniel sleep better at night, knowing that some good has come out of all of this mess, Conrad advises. Dan's not buying it. Maybe the Aiden Mathis Foundation will be , he quips. Conrad picks up a medal sitting on Daniel's desk. He recounts the story of his son overcoming adversity to win a race. It's a trip down memory lane that Conrad can take because he wasn't rotting away in prison. Oh, I get it now! All of this underhanded business and treachery is about family! Man, Emanda's going to feel like a dick when she realizes she's trying to destroy a family that's just trying to make time for each other. Aiden waltzes into the room, throwing a little bit of respect and thanks to Conrad for his endorsement to be on the board. He asks for a meeting with Dan this afternoon over some drinks to discuss some proposals. It's a date!

Stowaway. Emanda walks in to see Jack already talking to Eli at the counter. She's noticed by Jack, who comes over to ask what she's doing there in that passive-aggressive "Don't you know I'm mad at you" way. Ems says she'd like another chance. That's fine with Jack as long as she can explain why she led him to believe that Amily was seeking revenge for her father, especially now that Eli's just told him that the entire time he lived with Amanda she hated her father. Eli walks over to them and interrupts before Emanda can come up with an excuse. Then, Eli shrugs off an introduction from Jack, pointing out that he met Ems at Grayson Manor earlier. That's enough to put Jack off. He walks away. Eli: "The guy's got the weight of the world on his shoulders. Not at all the footloose dock boy you told me about... is he, Amanda?" Eli reaches down to snatch Emanda by the wrist, turning it to reveal her infinity x infinity tattoo. "That's a nice tattoo. Lookin' pretty good for a dead girl." Ems can only respond with a look of fear.

Outside on the docks, Eli and Ems walk and talk. It's much less antagonistic on Eli's part now compared to earlier. He asks a few questions about what "the con" is, and Ems -- to her credit -- is pretty straight-forward. She doesn't deny switching places with Amily, and just says she needed to outrun her name. She remains mum about why Ams would take such a short end of the stick in their exchanged identities agreement. Eli suggests Emanda should remember who she's talking to. FLASHBACK: Pyro little Amanda sets a fire in a trashcan in the upstairs room of her bedroom at the foster home. Little Eli looks on and mentions that people believe Amanda started a fire at her last home. She couldn't care less. Their foster mother calls out from downstairs that a family's there to take a look at her. Eli tells Amanda not to blow it. /FLASHBACK. Ems gracefully says that she trusts him, but she's worked too hard to start over to take any risks. She changes the subject to his own success at starting over. Eli comes clean that his rare books thing is a scam and he's got warrants in three states. Seeing an opportunity to be rid of this pest, Ems offers a way of wiping his record clean and setting him up with some cash as long as he starts his new life elsewhere.

Yet another scene begins with Daniel hugging an alcoholic beverage. This downward spiral can't happen soon enough. Posted up at the counter of some downtown bar, Daniel really doesn't want to be bothered. Cue some stock exchange yahoo who's got a bone to pick with the infamous Danny Grayson. The guy makes some remarks about actually earning his MBA and not getting to sauce it up before the closing bell. Dan reaches his boiling point, grabs the guy by the tie and is ready to start bashing in his face, but he takes a punch to the jaw instead. As he's reeling, Aiden intervenes, grabbing Dan and yelling at MBA guy to leave. More than anything, Daniel's angry at Aiden for thinking he should be a guardian angel. Despite Aiden's rationale that he was protecting Dan from a lawsuit, Daniel goes off on him for always trying to take something from him, be it his ex-fiancé or his dignity. Dan leaves the bar in a huff and Aiden's hope of being on the board at Grayson Global leaves with him. When it seems all hope is lost, Aiden's phone rings. Conrad was watching him from a corner of the bar, apparently, and likes that this guy was looking out for his son's best interests.

Late at night at the docks, Jack does some investigating. He finds a guy who's out there alone working a night shift and introduces himself. The guy recognizes Jack as the guy that was part of the boat explosion. Jack asks if the guy knows anything about what happened that night, but he's instantly on guard and doesn't want to say anything. He tries to walk away, but Jack cuts him off and makes it very clear that he's just a guy who lost his wife and wants some answers because not knowing is driving him crazy. Docks Guy spills everything he knows. Someone chartered his speed boat and then called him back later to meet him back on the docks. There was blood everywhere and the mystery man paid cash for silence and to buy the boat outright. Jack asks what he looked like. "Tall, sandy hair, blue eyes..." That sounds just like a certain someone who scored a three on the Kinsey scale. Jack leaves to go get some answers from Nolan.

The Amanda Clarke Foundation benefit is already in full swing at Grayson Manor when Ems and Nolan arrive, the former in a conservative maroon dress and the latter in a gaudy gold suit with the collar of his dark print shirt popped. They run into Victoria, who informs Ems that she won't be given the co-chair position for the charity on the grounds that she probably already has too many philanthropic time commitments. Well played, Queen. Ems and Nolan head over to Eli, where Emanda introduces Nolan as the guy helping her with that thing they discussed. Nolan pulls out his phone to show Eli James his own criminal record, asking if he's related to Jesse. It's the type of thing your uncle might say to you at a barbecue, not Nolan Ross speaking to Emanda's current nemesis. Eli's certainly not amused. He impatiently asks if the record can be wiped or not. Nolan nonchalantly makes a grand show of performing a few gestures on the phone, complete with a "poof" of his hand to signify the record magically disappearing. Ems then hands over a check for $100,000 and asks Eli to leave. He says he knows that was the agreement, but he doesn't want to be rude to Victoria. Eli walks off like a man who has no intention of leaving the party or town any time soon. Nolan relays that observation to Ems.

Elsewhere at the party Declan finds Charlotte, who he's been trying to reach all day. She wasn't at school and wasn't returning his calls. Charlie looks a bit like a girl caught red-handed and doesn't help her cause by giving the lame excuse that the day just "slipped away." When Eli appears, Charlotte introduces Declan as "Amanda's brother-in-law," conveniently omitting he's also Charlotte's boyfriend. Dec doesn't like that and reverts back to his whiney, jealous high school boyfriend days. He's pushed over the edge when Eli mentions that Charlotte spent the day showing him around the island. Dec tell Charlotte she can call him when she's not so preoccupied and leaves. Ugh. This again? I thought these kids grew up.

Ems seeks out Ashley to compliment her on throwing together a gala so quickly and for giving her a heads up about what was about to happen to Amily. Emanda offers repayment by tipping Ashley off to Eli being a snake in the grass that could hurt the Graysons. When Ash walks off to investigate for herself, Aiden appears. He takes note of Eli's quick wooing of Charlotte and somehow relates that back to his failure to woo Daniel. Odd. Luckily, they can still count on hearing from Conrad about some position for Aiden, and perhaps Aiden can somehow get Daniel interested in Ems once again.

We get a look at Eli schmoozing with random partygoers while Victoria and Ashley are in mid-conversation about whether he's a wolf in sheep's clothing. Victoria just sees the sheep. But of course that's all you're supposed to see when a wolf is in sheep's clothing, Victoria. Despite Ashley's reasoning that he's estranged from Amanda and they don't know his motivations, Victoria only needs to hear that this intel came from Ems to write it off. If anything they should welcome him with open arms, she says.

Out in the pool house mirror, Daniel examines the black eye he received from his earlier altercation. Aiden finds his way into the pool house, which gets an exasperated reaction from Daniel. I know, Dan. This guy's boring as hell. This is supposed to be a party! Aiden goes into immediate damage control, admitting he has no aspirations of being friends with Daniel and that he only has a financial stake in his well-being. He suggests that he has someone Daniel could talk to so that he can maybe work through his demons. To Aiden's credit, he does a really good job of selling that his relationship with Emanda ended because she still had feelings for Daniel, and she would be a good listener for him right now in his time of need. When Dan accuses Aiden of being put up to this by Ems and winning his invitation for this party through her, Aiden uses his ace in the hole. He tells Daniel that it was Conrad who invited him.

Cut to Daniel stomping over to have a word with his father who's speaking with a potential donor. Conrad's none too happy that his son just scared off a possible six-figure investment, but Daniel is livid that Aiden has been appointed treasurer of the foundation. Conrad pronunciation/phrasing alert: He uses "whilst" as he explains that the entire foundation is a front to protect the family's assets from the government. When the Initiative makes their move, they will believe that Aiden was mostly responsible for everything and made off with the family's money. Daniel's disgusted by all of this. He walks off in a stupor. Yes, I know that's not unusual.

For the second or third time in the episode, Nolan refers to Eli is "Faux Bro" as he and Emanda watch him "climbing Mount Grayson like it ain't no thang." I'm not sure how I feel about all of that, but in any case, what it means is Eli can be seen entrenching himself with Victoria and Charlotte, making his familial tie to Amanda Clarke seem like much more than it was. Ems decides to intervene. She brings up the house fire in front of Victoria and implies Eli must resent Amanda to some degree. Eli dodges the question for a bit and spins the yarn of growing up under the assumption that all he and Amanda had was each other and that he likes to believe she started that fire so no foster family would want her and they could stay together. Victoria comments that Eli is a shining example of perseverance. While Eli drones on about how he went on to get a good education, Ems gets a bit distracted by Jack's arrival at the party. She quickly snaps back to reality when Eli present the very same check Ems gave him for $100,000 as a donation to Victoria. He stares down Emanda as Victoria applauds his generosity. This is like watching your favorite super hero get sucker punched by some two-bit criminal that just stole their equipment.

Jack grabs the wireless mic and gains the attention of the crowd at the benefit. He says he wasn't sure he would even attend tonight, but he realized that he doesn't have many friends. Nolan's worth, like, twenty friends, Jack. The Graysons are among those few friends, Jack announces, hugging Victoria and thanking the family for its generosity. Victoria takes the mic and commends his bravery. As Jack walks off, Nolan intercepts him to ask what the hell he's doing. Jack says he's practicing lying through his teeth like him and Ems. He tells Nolan he knows all about him renting the speedboat that night. Nolan doesn't even know what to say, and it doesn't matter because Jack thinks Nolan's there to rub elbows with the people who are ultimately responsible for Amily's death. When Jack leaves, Ems comes over to find out what happened. Nolan pretends he has it all under control because he knows she has her hands full already. As if on cue, Victoria announces that Eli will be her co-chair for the Amanda Clarke Foundation. That escalated quickly.

Commercials

Emanda has taken Eli aside out in the courtyard to ask what happened to their agreement. He figures it was rendered void when he overheard Ashley relaying Emanda's cautions against him to Victoria. Now that he's seen the type of money Ems is dealing with, his curiosity has been piqued. Their confrontation is interrupted by Daniel, who is desperate to have a conversation with Ems. He offers to walk her home so they can talk. As they leave, Victoria comes out looking for her son, and is informed by Eli that he's just left with Ems.

Back at the Stowaway, Nolan finds Jack depressingly watching video from his and Amily's wedding day. He threatens to call the police on Nolan when he sees him. Nolan doesn't feel threatened because he'll just tell the cops what he wants to tell Jack right now. He pulls out a copy of a deed to the speedboat in Kenny Ryan's name. Nolan explains it as Kenny maybe having a crisis of conscience. Knowing that Kenny's been paid off to stay away, all Nolan has to do is advise Jack that he has a brother and son to think about and he should just let it all go. Jack lacks subtlety when he suddenly relents and takes Nolan in a hug to tell him he's sorry he doubted him. Jack is getting "good" at lying through is teeth, I guess.

Ems and Daniel arrive through the perpetually open French Doors of Casa Emily. Dan's prepping her for how outrageous and paranoid he's about to sound. He comes clean about everything -- about the Initiative having leverage against him, about how it's suffocating him, about how his only recourse being to pass the buck, and about his parents using the Amanda Clarke Foundation as a front. Dan begs Ems not to say anything to anyone and offers to pay Emanda back every penny of her donation so she won't revoke it now and draw suspicion. You know... I always thought not killing off Daniel in Season 1 was a mistake because of how tragic it would've been, but seeing the toll all of this is taking on him now is pretty hard to watch when half the time he's just trying to do the right thing.

His parents, on the other hand, are counting all of the donations they received for their fake charity back at Grayson Manor. Just shy of $5 million. Pff... peanuts! Daniel returns from Casa Emily a new man. He tosses a check down on his dad's desk because it wouldn't appear right if he wasn't supporting his own family's cause. He asks that Conrad remind Aiden -- the new treasurer -- that it's tax-deductible and heads off to bed. Conrad's impressed, but Victoria knows better. She shares the knowledge that Daniel's cozying back up with Emanda. It doesn't worry Conrad because Trask will be on top of anything going on there. That gives Victoria the idea that maybe they can employ Trask to get rid of their problem, presumably meaning Emanda.

Ems places a call to Nolan from Casa Emily to ask about Jack. Nolan fills her in on the whole speedboat conceit. They're good with Jack for now. Emanda changes the subject to Carrion. She asks if it can get through any firewall, which Nolan confirms and adds that it can't be traced. He sounds so proud of his malicious code. It's cute, really. When Nolan asks why Ems is interested in talking tech, she lets him in on the intel that the Graysons plan to move their entire fortune into the account for the Amanda Clarke Foundation. Nolan follows along. If they can access the account, they can bankrupt the Graysons. Nolan: "That's quite an Achilles you've discovered." Emanda: "And tomorrow we sever it."

Commercials

Out at the beautiful, modern safe haven house, Emanda and Aiden go through a typical morning ritual together as they prepare for their days -- Aiden preps his briefcase, while Ems fills a thermos with coffee for him. They walk and talk about Emanda's plan for Eli, which is actually to just do nothing. Oh. OK. The logic is that exposing Emanda would take away any leverage Eli would have to gain from his current situation anyway. Ems walks Aiden out to the front door where they're greeted by Nolan. "So... this is where Aiden-san 'waxes off.'" It only took 57 minutes into this episode for Nolan to finally say something that sounded like him.

At Grayson Global, Daniel speaks in front of the board, presenting Aiden as the new member. He has nothing but kind words for the British bloke who knows business and also has your back in a bar fight. It's nice to finally be done with this stupid board membership story.

Safe haven. Close-up on Nolan's laptop screen which displays the logo for Carrion, which looks like the logo for a videogame by Valve. Emanda sits beside him and bears the brunt of Nolan's geeking out about his little program. He invites her to watch and be amazed as he infiltrates the lines of defense on the Graysons' bank account. Carrion quickly bypasses the first firewall, with Nolan becoming increasingly giddy as he types away. He smiles when he gets through the dual-home gateway. But when he tries to bypass a rotating integrated security matrix, Carrion gives a warning beep and indicates that matrix in red. Something's blocked the infallible Carrion. Nolan clears his throat with embarrassment and gets serious. He tries to access the code of the mainframe when suddenly binary code begins cascading down his screen like The Matrix. Er... the Keanu Reeves Matrix. Nolan's disturbed. He tells Ems he's seen this before.

FLASHBACK: In David Clarke's prison cell, a '90s-garbed Nolan rants and raves about a hacker legend named "The Falcon" being responsible for all of the cyber paper trail that did the framing of David. Amanda's father sits stoically through all of this geekiness, but he eventually snaps. None of this matters anymore, he says. David's heard from the outside that Amanda is setting fires in her foster homes. He wants Nolan to refocus on just saving her. It's too late for him. David hands over the infinity x infinity box and insists that Nolan get it to her. /FLASHBACK. "Whoever wrote the code protecting this bank account... is the same person that sealed your father's fate," Nolan says. The characters cascading down the laptop screen form the image of a 3D falcon with "falcon" spelled "fa1c0n" in very lazy l33t speak. Try "|= /- 1 ( 0 //" time, jerks. Nolan: "The man, the myth -- the Falcon is back on the Graysons' payroll." Ems: "Then let's go hunting."
