No one should have to outlive their usurping pseudo sister/doppelganger. With Amily gone to that great strip club in the sky, Ems unravels. She admits that Ams was one of the few people she ever loved, having a crisis of conscience at the same time as refocusing her wrath on those she believes were responsible for Amily's death: the Graysons. If only it were that simple, though.
Jack survives his gunshot wound, and before he can fully digest the news that his new wife has died, Conrad offers fully paid medical and funeral bills. Jack accepts the offer, but he knows better than to give his trust to the Graysons. He immediately gets out of the hospital with the intention of tracking down Amily's laptop that had leverage against Conrad. He happens upon a hidden key that gains him access to that laptop, but the laptop itself is password-protected. As he's getting Nolan to come to the Stowaway to help crack the encryption, the place has been ransacked by Aiden (on Emanda's order), giving the appearance that Conrad was responsible.
The Graysons have more concerns than Jack. Daniel throws one of his semi-moralistic tantrums against his parents over all of this bloodshed they've caused. Also, that weird, plasticy Agent Trask of the Initiative still wants answers about Helen Crowley's disappearance. Victoria and Conrad put him on the trail of Amily, but he sees through the fact it's so convenient the one responsible for all of this would turn up dead. That suspicion is alleviated by Daniel proceeding with some recommended transactions on behalf of the Initiative. He has Aiden carry this out because our British bore has seized the opportunity to request a spot on the board at Grayson Global now that Helen cannot fulfill her duties as a dead person. So, Aiden and Ems have made inroads there, as well as with the other Grayson child. Charlotte is deeply affected by the death of Amily. Ems witnesses this and how it takes a toll on Victoria as she tries to comfort her daughter. Emanda sees now that Charlotte is the best way to attack the Queen.
But problems arise for Emanda. Jack uncovers part of the truth about the relationship between Ems and Ams, but only the part about them being in juvie together and Emanda being privy to a plot against the Graysons. Jack turns against Ems for not intervening to stop such a reckless and dangerous undertaking that put all of the Porters in danger. There isn't much argument Ems can put up against that evidence. Another problem is Charlotte makes it her personal crusade to throw a decent funeral for her sister, and starts researching Amanda Clarke's past. She turns up some names of foster siblings, and gets in contact with Eli, Ems' foster brother, who shows up to mourn the passing of the girl he grew up with. Groaaaaaan. Of all the relatives to stir shit up, a foster brother? Really?
Adding further to the onslaught of cliché business, Nolan has the tough decision of whether to call the bluff of the Initiative sending Padma what they claim to be one of her father's fingers in the mail. Nolan confirms the Initiative did indeed send one of his digits by cross-checking a database. He has no choice but to complete the code for Carrion so Padma can try to negotiate her father's safety. It's a huge gamble, considering the Initiative's track record, but Nolan puts his trust in Padma to judge the situation. Poor powerless Nolan.

Want more? The full recap starts right below! The familiar waves of the nighttime ocean open yet another episode. Emanda voice-over: "In its purest form an act of retribution provides symmetry... the rendering of payment for crimes against the innocent." Fade cut into the waves crashing at dusk. VO continued: "But the danger of retaliation lies in furthering the cycle of violence. Still, it's a risk that must be met... when the greater offense is to allow the guilty to go unpunished." Whiteout fade cut.
Emanda violently bursts through the backdoor curtains of Casa Emily still soaking wet and covered in blood from her encounter on The Amanda. Nolan follows closely behind trying to calm her down after she's just witnessed the death of the closest thing she'll ever have to a sister. She's probably also weighed down by the thought of having to decide where to donate all of Amily's clear high-heels. All of the logic spilling from Nolan's mouth is pouring in one of Emanda's ear and out the other as she removes her bloodied coat. Waiting for evidence that the Graysons put Nate up to attacking the Porters and waiting for news on Jack before heading to the hospital where Nolan dumped him are both good ideas, but Ems doesn't want to hear them. She searches for her gun. Her hands tremble from all of the adrenaline as she pops in a clip, and continue to shake when she goes to wash off dried blood in the kitchen sink. Nolan continues to ask that she take a second to ease up, prompting Ems to snap at the suggestion that she relent when she's covered in the blood of one of the only people she's ever loved. Aiden enters the front door, oblivious to the whole situation. He's greeted immediately with the news that Amily's dead before Emanda stomps upstairs. Nolan advises Aiden that it's best if they just give her a minute. Upstairs, Ems changes clothes and comes across the locket necklace Ams gave her as she was dying. FLASHBACK: Ams repeats her last words about Emanda giving her the one thing no one else could: a family. She puts the necklace in Ems' hands. /FLASHBACK. Emanda opens the locket, peels away a picture of Jack and reveals a photo of the two girls when they were teenagers. It sends Ems over the edge. She sobs uncontrollably. Finding old Glamour Shots will do that.
Later in the day at Grayson Manor, Conrad gets Nate's voicemail recording, and it sounds like he's been trying all morning to get through to the guy he last knew was on a boat with nefarious plans that may or may not have involved murder. Victoria is more concerned that they have not been in contact with that creepy Trask guy because there's no way of knowing if the Initiative has bought off on the idea that Amily was responsible for Helen Crowley's disappearance. Daniel interrupts the conversation with his very slowwww realization that the family is still in every bit of danger they've always been. Conrad tries to dissuade his son of that notion, but gets interrupted by Declan and Charlotte coming downstairs in a commotion because they've just been informed that Jack was shot. Victoria and Conrad barely react to the news. They both go white as ghosts, though, when Charlotte tells them that Amily's whereabouts are unknown. Dec and Charlie depart in a hurry, leaving Daniel to fume at his parents for causing more bloodshed. He's at his limit. Dan vows to shut the Initiative down and storms off. Conrad's phone rings with that call from Trask they've been expecting. Trask says he's recovered Helen's personal effects, but he's reserving judgment on whether Amily was responsible until they can find her. Conrad offers to come meet him, causing Trask to just hang up. Now that they're alone and not entertaining terrorists on the phone, Victoria asks what the Initiative has done. It's time for Conrad to come clean about his conniving deeds with Nate Ryan.
In the kitchen at Casa Emily, Nolan does inconsistent viewers a favor by recapping to Aiden all of the bad things that have happened. Hey! That's my job! Amily's dead, Jack's been shot, Padma's father is being tortured, and the only thing that can end it all is handing over a doom-bringing computer program that's yet to be completed. Nolan: "Why do I get the feeling this isn't what Takeda had in mind when he handed over your revenge degrees?" Oh, Nolan, you're a shining beacon among ruins. Aiden tries to be resolute in the face of all of this adversity, but he only succeeds in patronizing Ems when she overhears the tail end of his advice to Nolan that they run the risk of losing her if they don't give in to her need for revenge. It's the only thing she has left right now, he says. Emanda pretends not to be affected by that statement, standing statuesque on the stairs. She plainly informs them that Jack is out of surgery and that she's headed for the hospital. Ems orders Aiden to continue going after the Initiative (she uncharacteristically stumbles here and pronounces it "Inishyative"). Conrad's bid for governor will vacate his seat on the board at Grayson Global. That's where Aiden should assert himself, she says. Emanda coldly asks Nolan if he's coming with her to the hospital and walks out.
Ems breezes into the ICU full of concern while Dec and Charlie watch nurses care for an unconscious Jack. If the bullet had been two millimeters to the left, it would've gone through his liver, Declan reports. He fills her and Nolan in on what happened to Jack as far as they know, after Ems plays dumb. All that's known is that Nate Ryan and The Amanda are on the bottom of the ocean, and Amily's nowhere to be found. Charlotte excuses herself to go home so she can check on the baby. It's news to Nolan and Ems that Carl is staying at Grayson Manor. When Dec explains that Victoria insisted on it, they both immediately see through that machination, but stay silent until Dec excuses himself to get some coffee. Nolan states the obvious about it being convenient that Victoria would be at the Stowaway last night of all nights as he and Ems look in through Jack's hospital room window. Emanda: "The Graysons are behind all of this. And they're gonna pay."
Back to square one 3D title card and commercials
Are you ready for a cliché secret meeting with a dark suit-wearing man in a public park? I know I am. Conrad and Victoria find Trask sitting alone in a sort of amphitheater setup of park benches. They take a seat directly behind him because you're not supposed to make eye contact when you're having a secret meeting in public -- or so TV and the movies would have the Graysons believe -- but that makes you look entirely suspicious to normal people who make eye contact. Funny that. The Graysons endure Trask's clenched jaw, affected gruff voice and little boy haircut to plant the seed that Nate Ryan was after financial gain when he went after Amily and Jack. They suggest the computer with all of the evidence against Conrad and the Initiative went down with the ship -- all of this after Amily did away with Helen. I should note that in this meeting, Conrad manages to use his patented pronunciation of "against" (ah'gaynst) twice. Trask doesn't seem entirely convinced that everything should be wrapped up in such a neat little bow, implying before walking away that he will maintain his influence and threat over Daniel. The Graysons are left underwhelmed by their own performance, and decide they must get at Jack Porter now because he's the only one who can refute their story. This is totally going to be like that time you broke the lamp while your parents were out on date night and you had to give your little brother a shit-ton of cookies so he wouldn't rat you out, probably.
In his office at Grayson Global, Dan looks over news on his laptop of Stonehaven posting a 26% return on investment and then at news clippings about the funerals of Flight 197 victims. Conscience weighing on you much, Danny? Daniel's secretary, Grace, buzzes to let Daniel know Mr. Trask is on the phone to talk about taking over as liaison for Helen's investment group. Dan plays dumb about Helen's disappearance and looks over at the clock he knows is filming him while Trask orders him to complete some recommended transactions on his behalf. They hang up and Dan goes to pour himself a drink. Aiden waltzes into the room and wastes no time asking for another opportunity at being on the board of directors. Dan's resistant to the idea even after Aiden points out his assistance in landing Nolcorp. The poor man's James Bond remains undeterred. He casually mentions Grayson Global's investment in Stonehaven and takes credit for dissuading Prosser so Dan could close the deal. It was all part of his plan to set himself up to be in on that investment through Grayson Global when he'd get another opportunity at the board, he says. The rusty gears turn slowly in Daniel's head as he weighs Aiden's proposal that they test the limits of the sky together.
Slowly, Ems steps into the bedroom of her deceased namesake at the Stowaway. She pauses a moment to caress one of Amily's dresses before flinging open a closet door. Trask's face reflects in the door's mirror. To Emanda's credit, she does not scream out, "Ahh! Goblin!" They ask each other what they're both doing there, Ems finding clothes for Jack and Trask posing as someone investigating Amily's disappearance. Trask's phone rings and someone on the other end informs him they've found Ams' body. He breaks the news to Emanda, adding that Amily's family is on the way to identify the body -- "family" meaning Charlotte. Ems' face shows concern for her half-sister.
Walking through the foyer at Grayson Manor and inspecting a ledger, Conrad stops in his tracks when Ashley calls out from behind his office desk (because she has to be somewhere, right?), "Did you kill Amanda Clarke?" Conrad genuinely looks affected by this accusation. He denies it, of course, but Ash sees through Conrad's recent gambit to announce his gubernatorial candidacy early so he could have an alibi. He's OK with Ashley pointing fingers because he can just remind her that the deal with Nate Ryan was all her idea. Despite that, Ash thinks Amily's death was a tragedy. Yeah, that's nice, Ashley. Go schedule a press conference so Conrad can get media adoration from that tragedy and try not to sleep with anyone for social gain on the way out.
In an entirely too brief and fleeting moment reminiscent of past glories, Nolan sniffs a muffin in the waiting lounge at the hospital and puts it back. Padma's arrived, and she looks very upset. She's received a voicemail from Trask reminding her that she's approaching her deadline to save her father. Nolan asks for time to verify that it was in fact her father's finger the Initiative sent her in the mail, and for the opportunity to get a better sense of whether he's still alive. He'll interface with Immigration to get her dad's fingerprint and then use Helen's phone number to try and figure out her last whereabouts. Padma begs Nolan to hurry, plants a pained kiss on his cheek and leaves.
Outside, Ems walks and talks on the phone with Nolan. Jack's still unconscious, but the good news is Nolan has all but proven the Graysons were behind Helen's death. He's pinpointed the last two locations of Helen's phone as Grayson Manor and then the Stowaway. It all makes sense now that the Graysons murdered her and then framed Amily. The only question now is where the evidence laptop ended up. Ems will have to ponder that later because she's arrived at the medical examiner. She finds Victoria pacing inside; Charlotte's already in the morgue identifying the body. Ems senses weakness in Victoria and picks at it. She muses about how difficult it must be to be helpless to help during a moment that's sure to affect Charlotte so deeply. Victoria doesn't get a chance to respond to that because Charlie comes running out of the room in tears. Ems watches mother and daughter embrace and practically drools now that she sees how vulnerable Charlotte makes the Queen. She's seeing the revenge equivalent of two cartoon glazed hams right now where Victoria and Charlotte should be.

Daniel's milling about Nolan's office at Nolcorp. It's not exactly what Nolan wants to see when he's got a million awful things on his mind and shit to get done. He says as much to Daniel, but that doesn't stop Dan from demanding to know why Nolan never completed the report he requested about Nolcorp's R&D. If Nolan has done anything but destroy Carrion, Daniel will sue him into oblivion. Daniel demands to get some acknowledgement from Nolan that they are clear on this. Nolan: "Control, alt, delete." Little does Daniel know, that simply means Nolan will probably close some processes running in the background and then reboot.
At Grayson Manor, Charlotte watches over baby Carl, who's sleeping in his crib. Victoria comes in the room to check on her daughter. It's not enough to assure Charlotte that Carl doesn't know what's happening because she is already thinking about the moment when this little boy will realize his mother was taken from him. To make matters worse, Charlotte has given much thought to just how small Amily's funeral will be. Nobody from outside of Montauk will be coming. Victoria, knowing the can of worms that could be opened by digging into Amily's past, advises Charlotte to resist the urge to dig into a past Ams intentionally left behind. The mother-daughter moment gets cut short by an urgent text from Daniel to Victoria asking her to meet him downtown. Charlotte immediately goes against her mother's advice and begins searching on her laptop for info on Amily's foster family. She finds an article about the foster home that was burned down and pauses on a photo of a surly little Amanda sitting with some other children. Charlotte notes the names in the photo caption and searches the name Eli James.
While Nolan plugs away at his office computer trying to get into Immigration's database, he takes a phone call from Ems. She's made no progress tracking down the laptop. Nolan's seen no activity on his end either that suggests someone's turned on the computer, but he can report that Daniel's allegiance to his parents and the Initiative is dissolving because of his request for the destruction of Carrion. Nolan's tone in this whole conversation is resignation to being a pawn in everyone else's game. He's simply going through the motions at this point. Ems invites him to go see Jack at the hospital as Aiden arrives at Casa Emily, ending the conversation. Emanda shares the news that Amily's body has been identified and Charlotte is devastated. She also works through her realization aloud that Victoria's children are her weakness. She asks rhetorically how she's gotten so far off track. It's a valid question, Emanda. She gets a phone call from Declan about Jack regaining consciousness. Ems is about to leave Aiden in her dust in response to this news, but he snags her in an embrace and she sort of melts into it, all the tension and stress melting away.
Jack comes to with Ems and Declan standing in his hospital room doorway. He calls out to them immediately, Dec rushing to go kneel beside his brother's bed so he can hold his hand. Before anyone can say anything, Jack asks for Amily. Silence. Jack turns to Ems for answers. She tells him that Ams is gone. This is a million times worse than Sammy's death. For Jack, I mean. I loved that dog. Jack convulses with grief. Always with impeccable punctuality, Conrad appears in the doorway as Jack is mid-breakdown and offers his condolences, oblivious to his bad timing. Emanda hisses at Conrad that he should come back later. Jack composes himself, sits up determined in his bed and asks to talk to Conrad alone.

Now alone in Jack's hospital room, Conrad continues giving his condolences, but Jack cuts him off. He's been informed that Conrad has insisted on paying his hospital bills. It's taking every ounce of Jack's restraint to thank Conrad for the generous offer and accept it with the knowledge he gained on the boat that the Graysons were responsible for everything that happened to Amily. Jack lets only a couple tears roll down his cheek as he tells Conrad that he doesn't know how he can repay him. Conrad leaves the room, but not before stopping to tell Ems and Declan that he doesn't think they'll ever know exactly what happened on that boat. He asks Dec to come sign some hospital documents as Nolan arrives. Ems and Nolan have to rush into Jack's room because he's now trying to disconnect himself from monitors so he can leave. Jack comes clean about everything he knows about the Graysons framing David Clarke and reveals that Ams had hidden the evidence laptop. Emanda and Nolan do a good job of pretending this is all news to them, and ask Jack to hang on for a little while until they can prepare the Stowaway for his care.
At an upscale Manhattan bar, Victoria and her son sit at the counter together to have a drink and discuss business/terrorism. Daniel has uncovered that Grayson Global owns controlling stake in the manufacturing company for airport security in every major airport in the world. He's through being a part of all of this blood money. I feel as though he's said that a few times before, no? Victoria cautions him not to raise any red flags with the Initiative right now. They can approach it more strategically later. Feigning wisdom beyond her years, Victoria postulates that she wouldn't be surprised if Dan has already been greeted by somebody new from the Initiative who replaced Helen. Dan admits it, and adds that he was met by Aiden as well. They suspect he could be part of the Initiative now, but he could also be an ally. The only way to find out is for Daniel to have Aiden perform the transactions requested by Trask. If he's one of them, he wouldn't get his hands dirty like that. Victoria says that Aiden will have their trust if he passes this simple test.
Jack's bedroom at the Stowaway has been turned into a makeshift hospital room. Ems waits on him and he thanks her for doing all of this, but he has a favor to ask. He wants Emanda to give the eulogy at Amily's funeral. This sideswipes her a bit. How often to you get the opportunity to give a eulogy at what amounts to your own funeral? Jack says he'd do it himself, but after all of the revelations on the boat, he's not sure he even really knew his wife. Ems comforts him by saying that there's no doubt Ams adored him and that there's evidence all around the room that this was the truth. Jack looks over to the nearby nightstand where there's a framed photo and a glass jar full of the blue sea glass they supposedly collected together as children. Jack asks if Emanda can give him a moment alone. He takes the framed family photo of him, Amily and Carl up in one hand and then the jar of sea glass in the other. Jack becomes gripped with emotion, smashing the glass jar on the floor. Sitting there in all the glass is a small key on a keychain for a nautical locker. Jack picks it up and thinks really hard about what that means.

Ems checks up on Charlotte in her bedroom at Grayson Manor. She's still on her laptop, researching Amily's past and lamenting that no one will be coming to her funeral. Emanda assures her that everyone who mattered to Ams will be there and starts to leave, but not before Charlotte tells her that Amily was lucky to have a friend like her. After Ems walks out, an instant message pops up on Charlotte's screen from a social networking site called HampsterConnect.com (not an Easter egg, so don't try going there). The message is from Eli James, asking if Charlotte's still looking for Ams' foster brother. That would be him.
Wheeling and dealing as he walks through the dining room at Grayson Manor, Dan calls Aiden to give him the good news that he's being vetted for a spot on the board at Grayson Global. All that's required is for Aiden to complete some transactions abroad. Aiden says that's no problem. Their phone call ends just as Ems is coming downstairs from talking to Charlotte. There's a bit of an awkward moment before Dan launches into giving his condolences to Emanda. She brushes it off and asks if Dan can make it to the funeral. It would mean a lot to her, she says. Dan accepts the invitation.
Jack has tracked down the nautical locker belonging to the key he discovered. Inside is a duffel bag. He grabs it and walks off right by where Conrad is giving his press conference about Amily's passing. Jack slinks by into the bedroom at the Stowaway and begins rummaging through the bag. Inside are papers, a passport and the laptop. He cracks the latter open, but it's password-protected. Jack tries a few uninspired phrases like "Amanda" and her birthday, getting nowhere. Meanwhile, Nolan and Ems separately watch the press conference on TV, but discuss it over the phone. Nolan reports that the laptop has come online at the Stowaway just as Conrad asks Jack to come up to the microphone in a showing of unity. Ems recoils.

Emanda has rushed down to the Stowaway to intercept Jack. She finds him getting dressed for the funeral in the bedroom and spies the open laptop on the bed. Jack's acting as if nothing's different, so Ems plays it that way as well until Jack blindsides her with pages of her own journal that tipped him off to Emanda and Amily's friendship dating back to their teen years in juvie. Jack's livid that on top of everything he's endured Emanda was lying to him, too. He's reacting like a jilted lover with rapid-fire questions. What else was Ems lying about? Why did she lie? Finally, he gets to the big question. Did she know about the plan to bring down the Graysons? He doesn't even let Ems answer. The thought of Emanda allowing Amily to put them all in such danger is repulsive. Ems tries to offer up a barely audible apology. Jack: "I don't have time for this. I gotta bury my wife in an hour." He asks Emanda to leave. She rolls her eyes back and forth in deep thought about twenty times and then walks out.
Also in deep thought, Nolan stares at the flash drive containing Carrion that he's toying with in his hands. Padma walks in surprised he hasn't left for the funeral. Looking disheveled for the first time in this show's history, Nolan says he was up all night completing Carrion. Before Padma can ask why, he adds that the fingerprint on her father's immigration file matched. He holds out the flash drive for her to take, but doesn't let go when she takes hold of it. Nolan: "I can't tell you what to do, Padma, but when they make contact keep in mind that the people that took your dad don't have the best track record when it comes fulfilling their end of the bargain." Emanda's eulogy voices over as Padma takes the flash drive, internalizing this decision as she scans Nolan's face. "Death is a thief. It takes and keeps all that a person is... that a person was..."
Cut to the cemetery where the Graysons, Jack, Carl, Declan, Nolan and Emanda make up the entire funeral. Ems continues her eulogy as Daniel walks up to the gathering to whisper in his mother's ear that Aiden completed the transactions and they can trust him. Meanwhile, Aiden is picking a lock to break into the Stowaway. Back at the funeral, Emanda completes her unremarkable eulogy and places a flower on Amily's casket. She locks eyes with Jack, stepping down in anticipation of a hug, but he walks right past her to place his flower on the casket. The rest of the funeral attendees follow suit. Ems watches as Jack steps up to Conrad to thank him and his family for coming. He asks if he can come by Grayson Manor week to talk about honoring Amily in some way. Conrad graciously says their door is always open. Whispering to Nolan, Ems says she wishes she could tell Jack the truth, but Nolan presents the logical answer to that. The last thing Jack needs is to have Ams taken away from him again. Jack comes up to them to ask Nolan if he can come back to the Stowaway with him for a computer issue. They leave together with no protestation by Emanda. Conrad's phone rings with a call most likely from Trask that we don't hear. Conrad simply says, "The boy knows nothing." A few feet away, Victoria places a flower on the grave of David Clarke right to where Emanda happens to be standing. Tears are already filling Victoria's eyes as she notes the tragedy of the Clarkes. She's only glad that David didn't outlive his daughter. That's something no one should have to live through, Victoria says before leaving with the rest of the Graysons.
Jack and Nolan arrive at the Stowaway to find its been ransacked. Jack caustically says, "Grayson." Cut to Emanda standing out on the dock behind Casa Emily later that night. Aiden sidles up beside her, handing over the laptop. He says it's back with its rightful owner and she can now do with it as she wishes. After pondering for a moment, Ems flings it into the ocean. Aiden asks what the hell she's doing. Protecting Jack like she said she would, she says. But the evidence on the laptop could've sent the Graysons away forever, argues Aiden. Emanda: "The kind of punishment I came here for had nothing to do with prison." OK, that's a cool line. Emanda reasons that the laptop only clouded her judgment. There are no distractions now. Sure, blame new technology for your failings.
Burning the midnight oil in his office at Grayson Global, Daniel sips from a tumbler, looks over at the camera clock and calls Grace into the room. He asks her to take the clock into the shop because the time is off. When she grabs it, he gives it some more thought and suggests that she can keep it if she wants. That's dash cunning, Daniel. Randomly pawning off the clock you've been eyeing suspiciously for days to your secretary is surely not going to tip off a multi-national terrorist cell. Bravo.
In the dead of night Emanda has gone back out to Amily's grave despite pouring rain. She quietly stands alone with her umbrella until a man's voice breaks the silence from the darkness behind her. He says that the Amanda Clarke he knew was a survivor. Ems asks how he knew her. The man says she burned his house down. "Who are you?" Ems asks. The camera spins around to reveal Eli James. "I'm her brother." Well... it's been fun having a decent show, guys. Will it make you hate this episode less to know that Helen Hunt directed it? No? OK.
