It turns out there was a tell-all, best-selling book all about David Clarke's villainy. The problem as far as the author, Mason Treadwell, is concerned is: He promised little Amanda Clarke at the outset of writing the book that he would save her father. Instead, he was bought off by the Graysons and wrote an account that was much in line with the negative image of David we've all come to know was perpetuated in the minds of the public. Emanda sees an opportunity to return the favor to this sell out when Victoria asks Mason to interview Amily about her possible ulterior motives for sticking around the Hamptons. Amily is fed her interview responses by Emanda through an earpiece, allowing Ems to vicariously threaten Mason and give him one last opportunity to clear the record about David. When he caves to pressure from Victoria at a public reading of his finding about Amanda Clarke, Emanda decides to burn down his house and the only copy of his memoirs. This is exactly why saving to the cloud is a good idea.
Amily has become restless hanging around the Stowaway with boring, straight-laced Jack. She starts lashing out at him with paranoid jealousies of Emanda and Coyote Ugly bartending antics. Jack is completely repulsed by this glimpse of stripper until Declan suggests he lighten up or he might end up like their dead dad (harsh). When Dec is right, Dec is right. Jack lets his hair down and takes Amily on her requested trip to Atlantic City. Aside: So annoyed by this girl who could be in Paris right now. /aside.
Things are chugging along with Daniel and Emanda, as well. He plans on moving back in with his mother temporarily because she's shaken up about Tyler's meltdown, but Dan wants to ultimately move in with Emanda somewhere in the city. She stalls by claiming she won't move in with anyone until she's married, citing it's out of respect to how traditional her parents were. This coincides with Daniel trying to make a play for his trust fund and shares of Grayson Global so he and his mother can wrest control of the company from Conrad. What does that have to do with marrying Emanda? Conrad and his lawyer begin to suspect Daniel's possible motive, so Conrad amends the terms of Daniel's contract to stipulate he needs to reach the age of thirty or get married to gain access. That's more than enough to have Daniel determined to ask Emanda to marry him, but Victoria still insists he should wait, despite this being a sure way to beat Conrad. She goes as far as to have Ashley suggest to Emanda that if Dan were to propose, it might be motivated by money.
In Extraneous Teenager Land, Charlotte and Declan come to the realization that their summer love is about to lose the summer part. Dec gets all mopey because Char anticipates she's going to be really busy when she goes back to school. Like usual, Dec redeems his whiney self with an entirely sweet-hearted gesture. Charlotte finds him dozed off after trying to read Paradise Lost (and its CliffsNotes) because she mentioned it's her summer reading assignment. Oh, and there's a big chance Charlotte's dad is really David Clarke. But that shouldn't make this school year any harder, though. Right?

Want more? The full recap starts right below!Little Amanda (did you guys know the actress who plays little Amanda is named Emily?) sits in her social services room reading a book with her father's face on the cover called The Society Connection, written by someone named Mason Treadwell. Emanda voice-over: "For the average person leading an ordinary life, fame holds a hypnotic attraction." Amanda sobs as she absorbs the book's contents. The VO continues: "Many would sooner perish than exist in anonymity. But for the unlucky few who've had notoriety forced upon them, infamy can be a sentence more damning than any prison term." Flash forward to Emanda sitting in bed, reading the same book. Daniel walks in from a late night working at Grayson Global. He reveals to Emanda that he's decided to forego business school to focus on the family business, and he also would like to move back in with his mother for the summer, since she's still rattled over Tyler's attempt to murder Daniel's birthday party. The consolation here is Daniel wants to move into a new place with Emanda in the city after summer. Thinking quickly on her feet, Emanda says she plans on never moving in with anyone unless she's marrying them. Her parents were traditional, she says, and she feels like it honors them to uphold their values. She adds that she definitely loves Daniel and wants to be with him, but she just wants it to be the right way. The right way being anything that will destroy his family.
Emanda wasn't boning up on that old Mason Treadwell book for nothing. We're at a public reading at a bookstore by Treadwell (played by guest star Roger Bart) with Victoria, Nolan and Emanda also in attendance. Mason dons a white suit, rose-colored shirt and fuchsia bowtie. He looks like what would happen if Colonel Sanders had sex with Alan Cumming. I don't mean what their baby would look like -- they're both boys and that's impossible. I mean the amalgamation of their bodies smooshed together. Queen Victoria sits front and center, eating up his every word while nervously glancing at the giant sandwich board of the cover of the book featuring David's face. Nolan and Ems hang back behind the crowd snickering at how much of a tool this guy is when he talks about how he draws inspiration for non-fiction from his subjects themselves. When he's finished speaking, Victoria immediately goes up to greet Mason, followed closely by Emanda. Ems blows through the usual, "Victoria! I didn't know you knew [blank]" and introduces herself as the girl who currently lives in the house David Clarke was arrested in, naturally piquing Mason's interest. Having him on the hook, Emanda reels him in, introducing him to Nolan. Treadwell looks at Nolan with wide eyes like he's a walking Pulitzer for a biographer. Wired Magazine's "Man of the Decade" and Forbes' number seven on their list of youngest billionaires -- these are Nolan's credentials Mason recalls instantly from memory. Nolan corrects him that he's actually sixth on Forbes' list (heh) before dropping the possibility they could get together to discuss Nolan's biography. Mason extends an invitation and his business card, so Nolan and Emanda's work here is done. When they leave, Victoria invites Mason over to the house to discuss something important. He can't refuse.
The Stowaway. The phone rings while Jack pours a drink. On the other end is Emanda. She wants to thank him for being brave the other night, but he shrugs it off since the gun wasn't loaded anyway. Amily creeps up on Jack and grabs him in a bear hug from behind, so he tells Emanda he's gotta go. Jack's girlfriend is completely restless in this dive bar. She wants him to be impulsive and shirk is duties so they can go to Atlantic City together. This completely goes against who Jack is -- she's basically asking him to change right there on the spot. He endures her childish declaration that his life at the bar is a "snoozefest" before firmly telling her he can't go. "I wonder if you'd say no to Emily Thorne," Amily erupts and storms off. Isn't that what he just did? Stupid name changes.
Grayson Manor. Victoria has brought Mason back with her. While declaring Victoria manages to masterfully make 20,000 square feet feel cozy, he pulls out a cigarette and cigarette holder (guh) and thinks better of lighting up after a barely perceptible glance from the queen. They step outside together, taking a seat at one of the courtyard tables. After some small talk about Conrad taking up residence at the South Fork Inn, Victoria cuts to the chase. She wants Mason to find out why Amanda Clarke is back in the Hamptons. He can do this by interviewing her under the guise he wants to reflect for his memoirs. Mason's not comfortable with this idea, and he tells Victoria as much, but she instantly becomes venomous. He'd still be writing earnings reports for the back page of The Wall Street Journal if it weren't for Victoria, and he shouldn't forget it. "Trust me, one doesn't easily forget a deal he's made with the Devil," Mason shyly drops his wit before agreeing to talk to Amanda.
Casa Emily. Emanda sits reading her father's journal. David V.O.: "By the time the trial ended, every person I once trusted had turned their back on me. The only remaining option was to find an impartial observer to tell my story. I thought Mason Treadwell would be that person." FLASHBACK: David sits across from a much more conservatively dressed Mason in an interrogation room. He talks of being set up and the massive cover-up on every level... it really does come off as paranoid and crazy, but Mason is at least humoring him. /FLASHBACK. Emanda is now watching this exact interview on her laptop by way of an old, roundtable TV show interview with Mason featuring this exclusive clip of his interview with David. Mason is asked about David's conviction about his claims, and he writes it off as advanced pathological narcissism, adding that none of David's claims have been supported by facts. Emanda stops the video. She pulls out her copy of "The Society Connection" stuffed with post-its, flips it over and marks a big, red "X" with her marker over Mason's face on the back of the book.
Well-read 3-D title card and commercials.
Stowaway. Amily mans the counter in a practically empty bar -- that is, except for Mason who calls out to her from across the way. He's sporting a turquoise bowtie now, which is much manlier for this setting, I guess, and asks for a light for his pretentious cigarette. Amily reminds him there's no smoking in bars, but he persists, so she walks over to him, snatches the cigarette from its holder and trashes it. Good-naturedly, Mason orders a drink instead, and starts in on Amily about their past connection of interviews when she was a child. Her reflex at this type of thing now is to say she just doesn't remember much about that time. Mason doesn't blame her. Instead, he invites her over to his house tomorrow for a closure interview. She stares back at him and his business card silently like she knows she is probably obligated to accept this invitation.
Grayson Manor. Attorney Ryan Huntley and Queen Victoria Grayson are having tea. Their plan to nullify Victoria's prenup looks to have been a success. The problem now is Conrad plans to divest Victoria's stake in the company. Huntley's suggestion is to have Daniel ask for access to his grandfather's trust fund and his stake in the company. Victoria thinks Conrad will see right through that, but Ryan is banking on Conrad's loyalty to his son winning out.
Stowaway upstairs. Charlotte and Declan return from a trip to visit the prep school she'll be attending in the fall. Dec notes that it looked more like a college, which launches Charlotte into listing off her schedule. She likens it to a college course load, and notes that she already has an assignment to read "Paradise Lost" within the two weeks. That's all it takes to get Dec PMSing about never ever seeing Charlotte after this summer. She insists she's an expert multitasker, which draws out this gem from Dec before he walks off: "I believe you. I'm just not sure how I feel about being one of your tasks." If I were five years younger, I'd totally be OK with being one of her tasks. Damn... I'm a creeper.
South Fork Inn. Daniel finds his father alone at a table waiting for his lawyer. Very quickly, Daniel tells Conrad that since he is now fully invested in being a part of the company, he hopes he can expect his father will reward his show of faith by releasing his trust fund. Conrad likes the cut of his son's jib because it is the jib he inherited from his old man. He agrees and they shake on it. Conrad's lawyer arrives as Daniel leaves, so Conrad fills her in on what just happened. She notes the timing of this, considering they just informed Victoria this morning they wanted to divest her. Conrad doesn't readily agree with his lawyer's suspicion, but he is a shrewd businessman, so he agrees to at least put in a stipulation in Daniel's contract that he needs to turn thirty or get married to unlock his stake in the company. Again, Conrad's lawyer raises an eyebrow at the marriage clause since Daniel is already in a serious relationship with Emanda. Conrad gets a gleam in his eyes. He thinks his son is easily distracted, and he'll be surprised if Daniel's relationship lasts through the summer. You can practically see Conrad's Rolodex of hooker phone numbers turning in his head.
We're at Mason Treadwell's very large cottage which, he explains to Emanda and Nolan, used to be owned by Ernest Hemingway when he was writing the The Dangerous Summer. Mason continues the douche tour to his writing desk where he uses a 1920s typewriter that was supposedly once owned by John Cheever. At least Mason's pretention affords an awesome exchange with Nolan. He jokes that when he needs to look up a word, he simply gets up and checks a reference book since he doesn't use a computer -- to which Nolan smarmily fake laughs to himself and notes, "Like the cavemen." Emanda asks about Mason's collection of books, which she notices seem to be all first editions. Prideful, Mason talks about how he loves rare items, including his sole copy of his manuscript that he picks up from his desk and shows off. Emanda and Nolan are practically drooling at the revenge potential of this one-of-a-kind treasure that likely contains this blowhard's heart and soul. Emanda turns her attention to a padlocked glass cabinet full of video cassette tapes. Mason notices her glance and explains that it's hundreds of hours of the one-on-one interviews he used as research for The Society Connection. More drool. Mason adds that he will be interviewing Amanda Clarke again very soon. This is news to Emanda.
Amily lights a shot as Foreigner's "Hot Blooded" plays at the Stowaway and slings it across the bar to a patron. A hot blonde stares at Amily from across the counter like she wants to devour her. She asks what Amily calls that trick she just did. "Being awesome," she replies. "I totally want to kiss you right now," Hot Blonde admits as if in a trance. "Not while my boyfriend is watching," Amily taps Hot Blonde's nose and retreats back to Jack. He's not feeling this vibe at all. He asks Amily to tone it down because there's a line she's crossing. She responds by walking straight back to Hot Blonde and laying a deep kiss on her. Amily grabs two bottles of liquor and climbs up onto the bar, announcing it's $1 shots time. Put money down on the counter and open your mouths. If this scene were any more Coyote Ugly, Piper Perabo would be walking in right now. Instead, Emanda walks in, surprised to see how the bar has devolved. She runs into Jack, who is not happy at all. Amily spots the two talking and instantly climbs down from the bar to intervene. Jack asks for a minute to talk to Emanda, which causes Amily to interject, "I'm sorry. Can I get you two a table... or maybe a room?" Jack rolls his eyes, but Emanda saves the day by saying she's actually there to talk to Amily. When Jack walks away, Amily asks if there's anything going on between them. Emanda expertly brushes off the idea and asks to speak outside privately.
Outside, they drink to "the girls of cell block 'D'." Emanda asks why Amily didn't mention sooner Mason Treadwell wants to interview her. Amily doesn't think it's a big deal since Emanda trusted her before with her identity. This is different, says Emanda. Mason is a bottom-feeder and is the reason why she had believed her father was guilty. Amily is confused because she hasn't had reason until now to believe David Clarke might not be guilty. Emanda simply says there's more to the story she can't prove without Amily's help, as she notes Amily playing with her prized lighter she was using earlier to light shots. Amily puts it down and asks what Ems wants her to do. Zoom in on Emanda's face with the "shit's about to get real" music reaching a crescendo.

Morning at an empty Stowaway. Jack finds Declan sitting by himself and laughing at something on his phone. He still manages to get in a whine to Jack about probably seeing his girlfriend for the last time at their trip to the prep school before showing Jack why he's laughing. His phone has been blowing up all day with people sending him pictures of Amily being wild at the bar last night. Jack admits he's in over his head, which Dec thinks is a good thing because he needs to be forced to lighten up. Dec gets his brother's attention to let him know he's being completely serious before telling him he's too tightly wound for someone his age, and he'll end up like their father if he stays down this path. Really wise advice from such a greasy, whiney teenager.
Cut to Nolan awkwardly/timidly firing shots at a gun range, not hitting the target at all. He's there with Emanda and an annoyed Daniel. He wants to know why they even brought Nolan. It's because he's still shaken up about Tyler's attack, and Emanda feels it would do Nolan some good to feel like he has some power right now. It's Daniel's turn to let loose, and he's a pretty decent shot. He challenges Emanda to do better, and she falls just short, but we all know she's holding back. Dan's gotta run because he's got a meeting his father set up with a prospective investor. With him gone, Emanda and Nolan are free to discuss revenge business. Emanda wants Nolan to help her control Amily's interview with Mason. Nolan's not sure why they're involving Amily in this plan, so Ems explains that when she met Mason, his real name was... FLASHBACK: "Leo Treadwell," he extends his hand in introduction to a stoic little Amanda in her social services room. He introduces himself as a journalist, completely dressed down and reserved. He doesn't talk down to the little girl, but instead has a friendly air of understated idealism and empathy. Leo/Mason opens the door for Amanda to talk about whether she thinks her dad's guilty or not. She admits she's been told she has to say he's guilty, but she pulls out a photo of her father she's smuggled under her mattress and says she doesn't think he did it. Leo asks Amanda if she'd like to help him rescue her father. /FLASHBACK. What ended up happening is he published a book with all the lies the Graysons have been feeding the media about David. Worst of all, Leo made Emanda believe the lies. Nolan asks how the punishment can fit the crime. Emanda silently slips on her ear protectors and pumps five bullets right into the target's bull's-eye and one into the silhouette's head.

South Fork Inn. Conrad is speaking with an attractive young woman when Daniel walks in. He introduces his son to her as Sophie Arnault, granddaughter of the owner of a big company called Arnault Offshore. Conrad excuses himself immediately to let the two do business. Sophie is thinking it's business time. She says she likes the idea of being in Daniel's very capable hands. His face registers bewilderment.
Upstairs Stowaway. Dec is asleep in a recliner, a copy of "Paradise Lost" lying open on his chest, when Charlotte comes in looking for him. She smiles to herself when she sees the book (and its CliffsNotes), covers Dec in a blanket and leaves.
Outside Leo's cottage, he asks if it's OK to record his interview with Amily as he pushes the button on his tape recorder. He's finally got a lit cigarette, so his first question is kind of bold. He asks why Amily would keep her father's last name. She says it's a good way to gauge who her real friends are. That answer is too smart to be from Amily, who is playing with her lighter as Leo continues his questioning. We zoom in on Amily's ear which is equipped with an earpiece and hear Emanda's voice feeding her the answer. Cut to Emanda and Nolan sitting in front of Nolan's laptop wearing headsets. Amily's doing a good enough job of reciting believably until she goes off script to mention she has plans of putting down roots in the Hamptons. Emanda tells her to stay focused and get ready to start asking questions of her own. Emanda has Amily tell Leo that she trusted him and he chose Victoria's word over hers. Reasonably, Leo says he couldn't trust the little girl's mental state during her account. Emanda: "And what about your word, Leo?" MINI FLASHBACK: Leo's promise to Amanda that they'll rescue her father. /FLASHBACK. Leo has definitely grown uncomfortable at this interview turning into an interrogation. Emanda instructs Amily to stand up and get in Leo's face. They give him an ultimatum -- his reading about his interview with Amily at Grayson Manor will be his last chance to redeem himself and come clean about everything. Emanda tells Amily to walk away. Back at the Fortress, Nolan takes off his headset. "Check you out, Cyrano." He figures they've just set up Leo to reveal the whole conspiracy, but Emanda's not convinced.

Grayson Manor. Daniel walks in on Ashley and Victoria making wardrobe decisions. Ash actually gets a little smart with the queen over her declaration of "no more bandage dresses," and offers to burn them immediately. Backbone is nice. Daniel asks for a word alone with his mother and tells his mother of Conrad's gambit with Sophie Arnault and the amendment to his contract requiring marriage. It doesn't even register as a possibility to Victoria and she's already giving up when Daniel starts telling his mother how much he loves Emanda. Victoria insists he needs to wait until he's certain, but Dan is pretty determined. If it gives them the upper-hand against Conrad, he doesn't see why he shouldn't move forward on what was already his instinct anyway. He leaves. Victoria just grabs her forehead in pain and calls out to Ashley. Victoria asks if Emanda is coming to the reading, and when that's confirmed, she tells Ashley she needs a favor.
Downstairs. Ashley finds Emanda, who has just walked in with Nolan, and asks if they can walk and talk privately. Less than gracefully, Ashley asks Emanda if Daniel has told her about the terms of his trust fund being changed. Emanda's perplexed by the question, and by the fact it's coming from Ashley, who elaborates that the changes stipulate Dan needs to get married to fully access his trust. Emanda asks why Ashley is telling her this. She replies that she would want to know if there was a chance her potential fiancé might have other motives, and walks away conflicted.
Doorbell. Leo is late to his own reading, and tells Victoria he was writing some new material. She's concerned because he was supposed to contact her after his interview with Amily, so she asks what he found out. He explains what happened and that Amily wants him to unravel their whole conspiracy. He's genuinely worried he could go down as the greatest fraud in literary history. Uh... the bowties, typewriter and Hemingway cottage didn't already make that come to pass? Victoria: "There are fare worse fates." FLASHBACK: Leo hits "record" on his tape recorder before asking a younger, fuller-haired Victoria about her romantic relationship with David Clarke. She responds by threatening to sue him for slander if he prints a word of that mess. Unfazed, Leo asks about the note she supposedly sent to David's cell the night before his conviction. Conrad swoops in from the room and snatches up Leo's tape recorder from the table, saying the interview is over. Leo insists he's going to write this story, with or without the Graysons' input, and their threats to sue him aren't scary because he's already in deep debt -- he has nothing to lose. He starts to leave, and Victoria stands up, being given an idea. "Perhaps there is an arrangement that can be made, after all." Leo turns around with a smile on his face. /FLASHBACK. Victoria threatens Leo if he doesn't uphold his end of protecting their cover-up. Emanda has been watching this whole exchange from behind a pillar. How soap opera-ish of her.
Cut to the reading. Leo's writing pompously sets up his meeting with Amily. He stares at Victoria as his reading ventures into a passage of introspection about whether he could've been wrong about David Clarke all along after what he learned from Amily. "The answer I'm afraid to say, was a resounding... no." Emanda and Nolan's faces register slight disappointment.
Casa Emily. Emanda pours tea for her and Nolan as he paces back and forth fuming. "Spineless, seersucking dilettante. You know, I haven't been this disappointed since... Phantom Menace?" And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why we love Nolan Ross. That, and the fact he cautiously sniffs the mug of tea Emanda hands him before setting it down. Emanda's not nearly as surprised by Leo's actions. She figured this would happen. Then why go through all that trouble with Amily, Nolan asks. Ems has her own reasons, but she's not spilling. She just needs Nolan to take Leo out to dinner because she's going to need some time. "Time for what?" Nolan asks. "You'll know it when you see it," Emanda cryptically replies, a smile spreading across her face. The smile spreads to Nolan's face in that gleefully anticipatory way he has mastered.

Nolan honks the horn of his Mercedes G-Class outside of Hemingway Cottage at night. Leo comes running out of his house and hops into Nolan's passenger seat like an excited child, and while there's nothing to indicate it, Nolan has to be annoyed they're both wearing white suits. Leo suggests they go somewhere "cozy" and they're off. Emanda emerge from the bushes across the street, donning her black hoodie. She walks toward Leo's house.
Queen Victoria has summoned Ryan Huntley to Grayson Manor so she can vent over a glass of wine about Conrad's countermove of changing Daniel's contract. Huntley is calm about it because he thinks it's as simple as Victoria giving Daniel her blessing. He thinks Victoria is being counter-productive to both their cause and her relationship with Daniel. Standing in his way of marrying Emanda is just going to break his loyalty to her. Ryan convinces Victoria by saying the contract stipulates "marriage" is the only requirement, not "successful marriage," and she should let him rush into this if it's what he wants.
Amily lounges in Jack's bed at the Stowaway, reading a magazine and wearing very short jean shorts. Jack walks in wearing a suit with the bar's tip jar tucked under his arm. She asks who died. Classy. Jack claims "old, uptight Jack" died. He sits down on the bed and tells Amily he envies her free-spirit and asks to be forgiven for being such a party pooper. Amily asks about the tip jar. He says they made $500 just in tips this week because of her and he wants to take her to Atlantic City so she can watch him turn it into $5,000. She jumps up and hugs him with her arms and legs. They fall onto the bed together, laughing and kissing.
We pan around the inside of a dark Hemingway Cottage with a flashlight. Emanda goes straight for the glass cabinet with the video cassettes. She picks up a wooden plaque Leo won for two million sales of The Society Connection and flings it at the glass. She starts scooping all of the tapes into a bag. Emanda voice-over: "People are fond of saying that you can't unring a bell." FLASHBACK: Little Amanda cries as she reads Leo's book. VO continued: "And while that may be true, you can certainly smother its ring under the dull roar of conjecture and lies." Amanda finishes the book, grabs her smuggled photo of her father from under her mattress and sets it on fire in a waste bin. /FLASHBACK. Emanda finds Leo's stash of cigarettes, opens Amily's lighter and sets a lit cigarette on top of Leo's memoirs to Amily's lighter. VO continued: "But some words ring out like church bells, rising above the din, calling us to the truth." Emanda walks away from Leo's burning house in slow-mo.
Leo is trying really hard to convince Nolan to come in for a nightcap as they approach Hemingway Cottage. As they get closer, Leo notices the fire and jumps out of Nolan's car, repeatedly yelling, "No!" like a college student whose final paper has just been lost without being saved. He falls to his knees and begins sobbing while Nolan stands back and utters to himself, "Bad girl." I have to say that as silly as it might seem, this is probably the most thoroughly Emanda has beaten someone.
Setting up her alibi, Emanda shows up at Daniel's pool house in a trench coat. She opens it to reveal she's wearing a black teddy and thigh-highs. That's good alibi.
The morning, Emanda groggily walks over to her breakfast table which is piled high with Leo's interview tapes. She pops one into a tape player connected to her laptop. Emanda voice-over: "Some words are immortal, long-buried or even burned. They're destined to be reborn like a phoenix rising from the ashes." The video played back is another interview with David. He insists in it that he and Victoria were in love and she was going to leave Conrad. When Leo tells him there's no proof, David brings up the note sent to him in his cell by Victoria. It was unsigned, so that's a dead-end. The camera is trained on David's face as he thinks long and hard. Emanda voice-over continued: "And when they do... it can literally take your breath away." David has found the words: "Six months ago Victoria gave birth to a baby girl. Her name is Charlotte. You want proof that I'm telling the truth? Ask her who the father is." We zoom in on Emanda's face as she gasps for breath.
