Fit For A Queen

For this challenge, the designers' muse is an "icon of American beauty." Not Richard Simmons -- the other one, Miss USA. Her name is Tara Conner, and my Alabama roots are showing because I love her so much I think I had a fever during the show. She tells the designers that she wants an evening gown for the Miss Universe Pageant that makes her look tall, doesn't make her look too busty, and has earth tones. Then, the designers have some time to sketch an idea and pitch it to Tara. She chooses seven favorites, and the seven chosen designers in turn choose a partner to help them make their design. The teams were as follows, with the team leader listed first in each grouping: Laura/Michael, Keith/Bradley, Kayne of Many Colors/Robert, Jeffrey/Alison, Uli/Bonnie, Malan/Katie, and Vincent/Angela.

Things look kind of shitty for Vincent and Angela from the get-go, as she is the last chosen and Vincent welcomes her to his team by declaring, "I'd be happy to have Alison on my team." Keith is emerging as somewhat of a prick (though it's making him more interesting), while Malan tells a really sad story about how his asshole of a mother threw his childhood drawrings on the floor and tried to crush his dreams. Angela questions Vincent at every turn, making the butts of America clench in anticipation of Vincent's breakdown -- which, surprisingly, doesn't really happen.

On the runway, there were mixed results. Jeffrey and Alison created a nasty dress that didn't end up in the bottom. No, the bottom was reserved for Vincent's and Malan's designs. Vincent made it through because Angela was such a bitch to work with. It came down to Angela and Malan -- and Malan got the boot! He was really sad and it was kind of heartbreaking. Meanwhile, of course Kayne of Many Colors won the challenge. Quite deservedly, too. His dress rocked.

Previously: Keith Michael won the first challenge of the season. He made a snappy little dress with a bed sheet that the judges loved. He also revealed himself to be a little bit pompous. Stacey Estrella was sent home. I'm sure that by the time the reunion special rolls around, she will have learned a little bit about industrial sewing machines. She'll probably have a PhD in Industrial Sewing. Girl loves her degrees.

As the title sequence begins, Heidi tells that the winner will get a spread in Elle, and we see a shot of the recent issue with Mandy Moore on the cover. Now, I just want to say that I can really love the Mandy Moore from time to time. I'm totally down with Saved!. But... she does not look good there. She looks like someone just pulled her out of the ocean. She looks shipwrecked. Her hair is MASSIVE and she looks kind of puffy and she's got that fucking smoky eye. Hi, welcome to the late '90s, Elle. Winona Ryder's all grown up and we are done with the goddamn smoky eye. My point: What is Elle doing? With Project Runway they have their first stab at relevance in, I don't know, ever, and they're using it to make Scarlett Johansson look like a victim on The Swan. It just seems like they could be doing something a hell of a lot more vital. People are interested in the art and craft behind fashion in a way that they never really have before, and Elle really has an opportunity to exploit that, but it looks like they're going continually downhill. They can't decide if they want to be high fashion but younger, tween but older, et cetera. It's a shame, because I think Nina Garcia is great. Let's hope they can pull it out.

It's rise and shine at the Atlas apartments. Angela is performing some grooming ritual that requires that her face be super-close to the mirror. She says that she was sorry to see Stacey leave, "but we all have to go sometime." Call Beverly Cleary -- Ramona Quimby needs to learn that shit right now.

Keith is shaving, which is funny, because I always think he looks like he needs to shave. He says he doesn't care about his immunity because he plans on doing well on all of the challenges. He sounds stoned. And he is a dead ringer for Justin Kirk.

Malan wakes up with pre-shellacked hair. My sympathies to his pillow. He's really chipper and interviews that he's totally excited to be there and really likes all of the other designers, which is a departure from his earlier comments. Maybe he's a morning person.

At the runway, Heidi enters holding the lovely black velvet button bag. The designers are beaming at Heidi. Angela is wearing this weird shirt that she no doubt made that's all Bedazzled at the shoulders. Also, she's wearing her hair in a ratty ponytail and is sporting greenish cat-eye glasses. She's putting the "Ew" in "Ewhio."

The designers are going to be choosing their models this time. Keith chooses first because he won last week's challenge. He stays with Nazri, who has a bit of the snaggletooth working when she smiles after he chooses her. Then Heidi starts drawing buttons. A lot of the designers choose new models and, in the end, Katie's model from last week, Candace, is sent home. I don't blame them. She looked a little busted.

After Candace is banished, Heidi tells the designers that their challenge this week will be to design a dress for "an icon of American beauty." All of the designers smile, except for Vincent, who is staring off into the distance. It's scary in there.

The icon is Miss USA, Tara Conner. She is so pretty, I'm giggling. She's a religious woman who lives by the adage, "The higher the hair, the closer to God." I love her. The designers seem really pleased. Angela wants to prove that she's the most pleased by repeatedly screaming, "Oh my God!" Our Kayne of Many Colors looks like he has the vapors. For good reason, too -- this challenge could MAKE him.

Tara tells them that their challenge is to design a gown for her to wear in the Miss Universe pageant. That's some good ol' NBC synergy at work. Everyone seems excited about the challenge. Kayne of Many Colors confirms for us that he's thrilled, while Keith points out that the Miss Universe pageant is seen all over the world. I think you mean "the universe," Keith.

In the workroom, Tara has changed into shorts, a fitted t-shirt, and a short-sleeved blazer. Seriously, she's so cute. I can't stand it. Her eyebrows are perfect. Tim asks her to explain what she's looking for in a gown. She says that she's an alcoholic. Wait, she says she's the second shortest girl in the competition. Whatever. Same shame, different disease. She wants a gown that will elongate her and is in earth tones (no white!!). Nothing too booby-centric.

Tim then informs the designers that they will be working in teams of two. The news is punctuated by production with a techno bass drum gong. We see flashes of the designers looking very solemn. No one really looks like they're freaking out, but I think production wants us to believe that. I'm game. Oh my God! Someone just crapped himself. Mayhem!! Poop everywhere! "Teams"? What fucking madman thought of that? Angela tells us that she has never made a gown before. She hopes that she is on a team with someone with "excellent construction skills." Or someone with "a clue." Or someone with "clean underwear... I just messed mine. Teams?"

The designers will have thirty minutes to sketch, after which they will pitch their ideas to Tara. She will choose seven designers to go further, and those designers will choose teammates. As they begin sketching, Jeffrey tells us he's worried about the challenge because he thinks of JonBenet Ramsey when he thinks of pageants. Huh? Just make a dress, dude. We know you're punk rock.

Angela decides that she should campaign to be on Kayne of Many Colors's team. As he's busy sketching, she leans over his workspace and essentially tells him that he needs her in order to do well. "You know this too well. You're gonna need someone to pull you out of your hole." Mind your own hole, lady. Kayne of Many Colors is clearly annoyed with her; at least, his total refusal to acknowledge that she's even talking to him suggests as much. He interviews that she thinks he's a shoo-in to win the competition, but he's not looking at it like that. It looks like other people noticed Angela's maneuvering too -- at least, Jeffrey did. When Tim enters to tell the designers that their sketching time is finished, Angela finally leaves Kayne of Many Colors alone, and he looks at the camera and says, "She's getting on my nerves."

It's pitch time. Laura shows her a pretty sketch and explains that she is an architect. Jeffrey tells her that his dress would have a "strong, warrior structure." Tara smiles at him, and I can't decide if she thinks he's ridiculous or if she likes the idea.

up is Keith, who immediately tries to grab her chest. He's demonstrating that he would create a fitted bodice, but it looks like a boob grab. She's not having it. I think she almost screamed. Then he says really intensely that he wants to show her legs because they're VERY IMPORTANT. "They're gorgeous." She's uncomfy, Miss USA.

Like Sybil, Vincent runs through several personalities when he's describing his design for Tara. He says that he wants her entrance onstage to make people go, "Oh my God... " At least, I think that's what he was saying. He may have just floated off into a memory of that time the couch told him to cut his hair.

Kayne of Many Colors becomes Kayne of Many Blurred Colors as he races through his love of Tara, pageants, his sisters, and his sisters in pageants. He explains a design that would elongate and frame her face, which he describes as "freakin' gorgeous." We're on the same page here. She's charmed.

Robert says that he wants to make her look like J.Lo at the Oscars. The look on Tara's face suggests that she translated that as, "Your ass is fat."

Angela sits down and tells Tara that she's going to ask a few questions because "I don't sketch." She asks Tara how she feels about "umpire" waist. Several things are wrong with this: 1) Umpires are perennial losers at the Miss Universe pageant; and 2) she's trying to use the high-falutin' pronunciation of "empire," which actually sounds like "ahm-peer," but failed. And what's the point? Everyone understands "empire" pronounced the typical way. I know like three people who use the fancy pronunciation, and they're assholes. ["Hey, my mom uses the fancy pr-- yeah, good point." -- Sars] ["Just kidding, Ma!" -- Sars] Angela clearly doesn't use that pronunciation normally; she's just trying to show off. And look what has happened, she's embarrassed herself and all of Major League Baseball. Let this be a lesson to us all. Tara is not into the waistline that Angela has suggested, whether it be umpire or fancy empire. Angela also pitches full-length gloves, which gets a big pooting no.

Tara chooses team leaders. She goes with Keith, Uli, Vincent... Vincent? Vincent apparently sold her by wanting to showcase her, instead of the dress. Laura is chosen because she thought about how the dress would look onstage. It kinda seems like everyone should be thinking about that, no? Malan's design is chosen for it's "curvy-lookin'" qualities. She was persuaded by Jeffrey's warrior dress. This little girl is full of surprises. Lastly, she chooses our Kayne of Many Colors. She loves that he's a "pageant freak."

Tara thanks everyone and makes her exit, while the team leaders have to choose their teammates. Tim chooses buttons from the velvet button bag. Laura chooses first and goes with Michael. Kayne of Many Colors says, "Oh, this is so hard," right before he chooses Robert. He was just saying that to make Angela think the decision to not work with her sorry ass was a hard one to make. He interviews that he would have chosen her had she not bothered him during their sketching period, but I find that kind of hard to believe, as he and Robert are OBVIOUSLY a match made in heaven. They'll be perfect. Suck it, Angela.

Jeffrey chooses Alison. Malan chooses Katie. Uli chooses Bonnie. Keith chooses Bradley, and I have visions of love amongst the Project Runway ruins until Keith interviews that he only chose Bradley because he didn't want to work with Angela. While I respect his reasoning, I'm a little crestfallen. Look, I know he's greasy, but I love me some Bradley Baumkirchner. He's like a hot little exploited American Apparel model.

Everyone knows the outcome, but Vincent quite graciously says, "Well, I'm happy to work with Alison." Er -- Angela corrects him on her name. Uncomfortable laughter all around. Celebrate the moments of our lives! I love that shit.

They all head to Mood with a $300 budget for each team. Malan interviews that gowns are his forte. Kayne of Many Colors decides that, though she asked for it, he will not give Miss USA earth tones. He will give her iridescent organza. Purple iridescent organza. Jeffrey interviews that he doesn't know what Kayne of Many Colors is thinking and that his fabric looks like ice cream. I'm sold.

While Vincent is thinking aloud, Angela tells him that there are only fourteen minutes left to buy supplies. He whispers at her to stop saying that because it's making him nervous. You'd think that Angela would take this moment to realize that Vincent is a little crazy. Instead, she antagonizes him. It's a little game of Who Gets The Last Word that is as pointless as it is time-wasting. She tells him that they might leave with no fabric. He says they will have fabric. She says they might not. Argh. Vincent interviews that he can't "hold people's hands." He's afraid to be touched. As well, he can't walk people through situations and comfort and reassure them. Angela says that she is not "inspired by his vision at all." Well, if you could see his visions, it would freak you the fuck out. Do flying hamsters inspire you? That shit is BIZARRE. Also, is it Vincent's job to "inspire" her?

Back at the workroom, everyone is busting ass. Kayne of Many Colors and Robert look like they are having a blast. Oh look, Robert interviews that they are having a great time together. He says they are like a comedy show. I'm seeing Hope & Faith.

We see Michael and Laura working together. She says that she chose him because she thought he would "honestly question" her decisions. That's pretty cool. As she's standing over Michael while wearing one of her clavicle-baring frocks, I'm suddenly struck by concern for her five children. If those babies were breastfed, they were seriously malnourished.

Bonnie interviews that everyone is wondering if this challenge will eliminate one person or two people. She says that she is hoping it is one person, because it "would be a bummer to lose two people at this point." Oh, that's sweet. Sweet like total bullshit is sweet... which is not really sweet. It's just bullshit. She's hoping it's one person, because she's only a helper and she thinks that the designer of the losing dress will surely get auf'd. If it's two and Uli's dress loses, she might be in danger too. She says to Uli, "I wanna see people start fighting."

While Vincent is working on a dress form, Angela is sprawled out over their worktable. "Hey Vincent, do you want me to help you drape the skirt?" He tells her to "hang." Not really cool. He interviews that he "had to get something done" and wasn't able to think of work for her to do. There's just bad mojo with these two. They should not be working together. And Vincent's shirt is unbuttoned far, far too low during his interview. Really, what's the point of a shirt if you're going to wear it like that? Is it just catching drool? Angela interviews that everyone else in the workroom was working together. Finally, she just kind of takes off.

We see Bradley asking Keith some questions about their design as Keith is preparing to go outside for a smoke break. He pats Bradley on the back and patronizingly tells him to "trust me, trust me, trust me." Then Bradley starts clucking like a chicken. Keith interviews that since he did so well on the last challenge, Bradley should know that Keith is really good. Yeah, I mean, while all of those other slackers were trying to make passable garments out of easy fabrics like seat cushions and beaded curtains, Keith had the unenviable task working with a cotton sheet. For real. Not to take anything away from his tailoring of that dress, but the freaking color did half the work. Hopefully, the hypnosis will work better on Bradley than the magnitude of Keith's sheet-tailoring prowess.

Malan tells Katie that organization is the key to success. It's very Mary Poppins. Malan tells a story about how, at the age of 13, he showed his mother a stack of sketches that he had made. She took a look at a few of them, then threw them on the floor and told him that he was wasting his time. They'd never amount to anything. Why am I laughing? It's just so dramatic. I'm seeing Parker Posey as Mimsy. Malan sees the show as a way to really show his mother that he means business.

As everyone is working, we see Keith tell Bradley that he is doing exactly what he wants, and Bradley says in what my close captioning describes as "Asian accent," "I so happy. I so happy, I almost cry." Oh Bradley, you're going to regret that.

Towards the end of the day, Angela tells Vincent that she is worried because "I made a dress like this when I was in college." Well, then, you have made a gown, haven't you? Vincent responds with, "I can't discuss that right now because I have to figure out how to drape this back." Now, just when I'm ready to totally blame Angela for the friction, he pulls that bullshit. Fine, she was rude just then, but she's telling you -- as a person whose ass will be on the line with you -- that she has concerns about the project you're working on together. You are obligated to include her. Vincent interviews that Angela was concerned with their work, "but that's not her call. I'm the team leader."

Then Vincent tells Angela that she needs to stand three feet away from him. She backs up, but he says that she is still not three feet away from him. Angela Solomonically suggests that, since she moved one and a half feet back, he can move one and a half feet forward. I just feel like crayons are about to shoot out of their asses. They're being so fucking childish. Vincent tells her that she's being really negative and it's going to mess with his work. He has a little moment of vulnerability there, and Angela could have seized the moment to make some progress, but: no dice. To make matters worse, Angela is wearing pants with dark fabric along the crotch, which resembles a urine stain. So, on top of her behavior, she has also officially become a pee-pee baby.

At midnight, Uli says, "Yippee-ay-hey-hey! We can go to bed." I'm really in love with "Yippee-ay-hey-hey" right now.

The day, Tim Gunn comes in for a visit. He tells Uli and Bonnie that their gown needs "perfect finishing." He gives some advice to Team Jolene and Kayne of Many Colors replies, "You're supposed to jump up and down and be excited!" Tim says he will be, "Tomorrow."

Tim tells Vincent that he is disappointed with their work, to which Vincent responds, "That's okay!" He asks Angela how she feels, and she replies, "As a professional designer, I wouldn't want my name attached to this dress." Ouch. Well, it's a lucky thing that you're a bored hippie living without electricity and not a professional designer. Because, wouldn't that be upsetting. Tim doesn't really respond to Angela. It's a shame she couldn't have gotten her husband to ride the bicycle in the bathtub or something to generate the power to tune into some Project Runway, where they don't take kindly to backstabbing team members. Vincent interviews that Angela's remarks bothered him a little bit, but he got over it.

Tim tells Malan that his dress looks like it has been carved out of a big log. It's too heavy. Malan has a leather dickey attached to his shirt. Must process.

In a neat little break room where there are all sorts of snacks lying about, Keith tells Angela that it doesn't look like she and Vincent are getting along. What follows is a master class in passive-aggression. Keith is clearly trying to fuck with her and she's trying to act like he's small. She tries to play it off like she and Vincent are working well together and Keith shuts her down with a flippant "I don't think that at all." She smiles and says, "I don't value your opinion in this situation." All the while, they're noshing on grapes and whatnot. Then, with this faux cheer, she says that Vincent explained that "it's his challenge; it's his dress." Keith says, "I think he's kinda right on that. See ya!" It's a beautiful thing, that conversation.

Katie, who apparently works in textiles for Target, interviews that she got increasingly worried about their dress. She tells Malan that she thinks there is too much fabric on the dress, but he says it's what he wanted. Katie points out that no woman is going to look at this big dress and want to wear it. She tells Malan that he will get to defend those choices on the runway if they get pointed out.

Scurry time. Laura changes part of her design, because the placement of fabric would "make her look like she's pooping." I'd agree that pooping dresses are probably a touch too progressive for the Miss Universe Pageant. This year.

Robert tries to tell Kayne of Many Colors that there are enough rhinestones on their dress. He replies, "Robert, we bought 4 million gross of rhinestones. We will put them on 'til our fingernails bleed." Robert retorts, "She's a beauty queen, not a disco ball!" They really are a comedy show.

Angela says something to Vincent about not saying on the runway that they ran out of time. Vincent lays into her, saying that she doesn't want any responsibility for the dress anyway. If the dress wins, she won't be responsible for that either. Come on, Vincent. That dress is not winning.

That night, in the apartments, a stunned Angela tells Laura and Alison that Vincent totally likes their dress. Laura says, "I've seen him defend crap on the runway before." I love how she says that like, "Bitch has been around the BLOCK!" There's been one challenge.

In the boys' apartment, Keith says that Angela is as transparent as a "fucking glass window." Vincent knows that she is going to throw him under the bus at the runway the day. Jeffrey chooses this moment to enter the room, clad only in a towel, and declare, "I got one word for you to sum her up -- feminazi." Okay, between the smoky eye and JonBenet Ramsey, and now Rush Limbaugh references? When am I gonna get to see more of this Jennifer Aniston? Vincent replies with, "Mmm-hmm!" It was really sassy and weird. He's exhibited like 43 personalities in this one episode.

The day, the designers go to the workroom and start getting their models ready. Team Jolene is thrilled. The dress fits their model perfectly. Katie and Malan are not having as much luck; their dress is like six inches too short.

As Vincent is ironing his gown, he asks Angela to find out when they have to be ready. She says 12:15. He asks her if she's sure, and she is totally sure. Then someone else says it's 12:30. Vincent is pissed that he asked Angela like four times to find out for sure when they had to be ready and she made no effort. He then says that she didn't help at all with the gown. She replies, "You absolutely cannot do that." Ooh, pet peeve. I hate when people tell you that you "can't" be angry with them. Shut up.

Laura tells her hair guy that she's looking for "more red carpet than pageant." I don't know how I feel about all of these people looking down their noses at pageants. How else would venture capitalists and senators find second wives if it weren't for pageants?

Tim calls everyone to the runway. Commercials. This week, the poll at the end of the break is, "Whose side are you on: Vincent or Angela?" They really could have used a "none of the above" on that one.

Heidi greets the designers on the runway. She's got the prettiest red lipstick on. Oh my God, Jeffrey is dressed like a fop. I think I love it. It's so weird. Heidi introduces the judges: Vera Wang, Nina Garcia, and Tara Conner. Oh my God, Tara's hair is so big. That is one righteous fox.

The show begins with Jeffrey and Alison's design. The gown looks like Cinderella after her stepsisters beat the shit out of her when she was all trying to go to the ball, pre-fairy godmother. It seems a little like it's falling off of the model. The shoulder straps are asymmetrical, but it looks like one was ripped off and you're just seeing the slip on one shoulder. At the same time, the fabrics have some really lovely golden earth tones -- as requested. Also, it reminds me of pictures I've seen of Katharine Hepburn in a production of The Trojan Women, so I guess they stayed true to the warrior theme that Jeffrey pitched. Alison says that it would be beautiful if they had another week to work on it.

is Keith and Bradley's creation. It's a strapless number with lots of flowing layers. However, there are no legs. Weren't we going to get legs? There are no legs. In the front, it hits like the middle of her calf, but a lot of the other layers fall further down than that. Keith says that he is happy with the dress, but I'm gathering that Keith is pretty much happy with anything with which Keith was involved. Bradley says he felt like the dress turned out very well.

A model does this weird Auntie Mame outstretched-arm pose behind the scrim before entering. Oh God, it's Vincent's dress. It's kind of chartreuse. The skirt is not horrible and there's a nice fit at the waist, but the bust and the shoulders? No. The shoulders remind me of Edith Head's haircut. I know that makes me the gayest person EVER for even knowing who goddamn Edith Head even is, but... look that shit up, I'm right. The dress is so quaint. I can't imagine someone wearing that to compete for Miss Rhubarb Festival, much less Miss Universe. Can you imagine? All of those Miss Rhubarb bitches would be all, "Wouldn't you prefer to be at the Miss Mincemeat Festival?" Laughing all around. They won't get away with this.

Here is the gown a la Team Jolene. It's really lovely. It has a jeweled neckline that attaches to a strapless gown. The bodice and skirt are fitted and the skirt flares into a Chanel-like bottom. The purple organza is gorgeous too. Kayne of Many Colors says that he has never seen a gown like this at a pageant. Someone missed Miss Rhubarb 2004. Flared bottoms everywhere.

Malan's design is . Oops. The bodice makes the model look really busty. Not in a good way. There's lots of intricate ruching on the bodice that just makes it really thick. The skirt is really too short too. And it's copper. The whole thing is a wreck. Malan interviews that he put his best foot forward. Someone needs a foot transplant. Katie says that she did the best she could with Malan's design.

Up is Uli and Bonnie's gown. It actually resembles Keith's a lot, except it has straps. It's high-waisted and fitted at the bust. Then it flares into layers of flowing organza. There are contrasting pinkish/purplish earth tones working. It's really pretty. Tara seems to like it too.

Last, we have Laura and Michael's work. It's, uh, white. Tara said that you shouldn't use white. It's one thing to stretch the meaning of "earth tone." It's hard to stretch "no white" into "white." But the dress is really pretty. It's a simple dress -- fitted in the bust and bodice and hips, loose from below the hips to the floor. It's really pretty, though. Michael congratulates himself on his construction work on the dress.

The show is over and the designers are on the runway. The judges are scribbling. Is Vera Wang like 75 now? She's wearing a pearly lipstick that does her no favors. Team Jolene, Malan and Katie, Vincent and Angela, and Uli and Bonnie are asked to stay. Everyone else is safe. Angela is chewing on her face while Vincent grimaces, then smiles, then grimaces again. Then smiles again.

Backstage, Keith tells one of the models that she's gorgeous. Either that, or he was looking in a mirror.

Heidi tells the people onstage that they are the best and the worst. She announces that only one person will be eliminated. All of the models return to the stage.

Tara likes the way Uli's dress flows. Vera finds it to be modern and enjoys the layering of color, which Tara echoes. She's just hoping to score a free wedding gown one day. Bonnie says that she liked working with Uli.

, they talk about Team Jolene's effort. Tara loves the neckline. It reminds her of the dress she wore for Miss USA. Kayne of Many Colors explains that he chose a color he thought would complement her, which Nina finds "amazing." I'm kind of missing Michael Kors right now. You forget how he raises the pitch of these proceedings until he's not here.

Moving on to Malan and Katie. Vera says that the detailing on the bodice is "a lot for one dress." Heidi doesn't know what it is, but feels that something is wrong. She's a medium for dresses. They pick apart the hem and the fucked-up bust. Heidi asks Katie who she thinks should go home from their team and she says Malan, because she doesn't want to go home for a design that wasn't hers. They ask the same question of Malan, and he says that he should go home as well.

Vincent and Angela... first off, what the hell is Angela wearing? A red trapeze artist's skirt with a blazer, and a belt around her arm. She's a carnie smack addict. Nina asks how well they worked together. Vincent says that he did a lot of work and had to correct Angela's mistakes. That's odd, because we didn't see Angela do anything at all with the dress. She repeats for the judges that she made a dress like this one when she was in college and she thought it was too simple. Nina says that she likes the back, and she gets agreement from Tara. Vera kills the lovefest by reminding everyone that sleeves are totally fucked up. "Hard to wear" is how she prefers to say it. Tara says they are a little "space cadet." Stop trying to make me like it. Vera says that the idea is sophisticated and its minimalism is interesting. Angela, who should be shutting up about now, says that she didn't feel the design was inspiring or "designer-y." I'm surprised Angela was able to pull herself away from the Genius Club long enough to make an appearance here. I say we send her back. Miss USA smacks her down and says that it seems like Angela tried to lead instead of letting Vincent do so.

Vincent bellyaches some more about how hard it was working with Angela and says, "It was the nightmare of my life." That gets a chuckle from Uli at the end of the runway. Both Angela and Vincent think that the other person should go home.

The judges deliberate. Aside from the sleeves, it sounds like Tara is kind of into Vincent's gown. You see, I never really got past those sleeves. All of them seem kind of disgusted at Angela's bad sportsmanship. Meanwhile, we see shots of her chewing her face backstage. She's got to stop that. They all like Uli's dress, though I must point out that Tara actually seemed more enthusiastic about Vincent's gown. Tara liked Kayne of Many Colors's gown, too. Heidi said that if you saw her walk onstage in that you'd be like, "Whoa!"

Nobody likes Malan's gown. Tara said that when their model walked out, she didn't even see her because the dress was so fussy. Nina was so bothered by the unfinished bottom of the dress that they cut from her quickly so she could take some meds. Garcia does not like a ragged bottom.

The designers return to the runway. I really hate what Angela is wearing. Commercials. 57% of voters are on Vincent's side. That you could be as obnoxious as either one of them has been and split the vote like that is proof of how overwhelmingly annoying both of them are.

We're back. Robert is in. Bonnie is in. Tara announces the winner. It's Kayne of Many Colors! Tara says that she loves the gown and she's going to work it. I love her. Kayne of Many Colors is immune for the channel. He interviews that this is going to mean a lot for his career. That is really awesome. He just left Norman, Oklahoma -- now he's dressing Miss USA.

Uli is in. Katie is in. She hugs Malan as she leaves. He kind of reassuringly pats her on the pack. ... D'oh! Vincent is in! You're shitting me?! He doesn't look back to Angela, which I really wanted him to do.

Heidi tells Malan that he failed on everything from color choice to execution in this challenge. She tells Angela that she failed her teammate. Damn Angela doesn't look fazed. Angela is in, "but just barely." Aw crap.

This is sad. Malan immediately starts to tear up. Heidi kisses him, and he goes backstage where we see him avoiding everyone because he's crying. He interviews that he "felt so ashamed." As he's hugging everyone, we hear him in voice-over say that he doesn't like to say goodbye to people. He felt like he was a part of something special on the show and he's very sad that it's over. Well, I never expected Malan's exit to be so sad! Poor guy. His mom's a total bitch. Gimme her number, Malan.

Update: Tara Conner looked loverly in Kayne of Many Colors's gown at the Miss Universe Pageant. Were it not for the 14 liters of bronzer she'd applied to her body, I'm sure she would've won.
