How Grumpy Got His Grump On

In the Enchanted Forest: Grumpy hatches from an egg that's been hit with a fairy dust spill, courtesy of clumsy fledgling fairy Nova (Amy Acker). It's sort of a HazMat situation. I'll explain that in the full recap. Anyhow, Nova really wants to be a fairy godmother, but grows discouraged when the Blue Boob Fairy tells her that's going to take a lot of time and work.

Grumpy and his newly hatched siblings receive their pick-axes. They are named when their names magically appear on the handles. Grumpy's name is actually Dreamy, not Grumpy, at least at first. Even though in our Fairy Tale World all dwarves are male, are hatched from eggs, and don't fall in love, Dreamy falls hard for Nova. It takes a clue-sticking from Belle for him to realize why he feels so out of sorts.

Nova and Dreamy decide to run away together and sail around the world. On his way to meet her, he runs into his foreman, Bossy, who tells him dwarves can't love. The Blue Boob Fairy chimes in that it's true; his love is only a dream, not real. If Nova takes off with him, she'll lose her wings and never become the fairy godmother she is meant to be.

Dreamy finds Nova waiting for him at their spot on Firefly Hill, and tells her they can't be together. Nova tries to convince him that they can take control of their own lives, but he says he refuses to stand in the way of her happiness. She tells him he is her happiness, but he says, "Dwarves can't love," and leaves her.

Back in the mines, Dreamy is bitter, like you are when you listen to stupid people who say you can't love when you clearly can. While working, he breaks his axe. When he's given a new one, the name Grumpy appears on the handle.

Meanwhile in Storybrooke, the Enchanted Forest fairies are nuns. Oh Regina, that curse really is evil, isn't it? The Blue Boob Fairy is Mother Superior, naturally. Astrid is as clumsy in this world as she was in the other, and accidentally orders 12 dozen helium tanks rather than 12. The nuns can't return the tanks and get their money back, so they now can't pay their rent to Mr. Gold.

Leroy (Grumpy) meets Sister Astrid (Nova) and is smitten. He tells her he'll help her sell candles to raise money for their rent. He and Mary Margaret team up -- the town drunk and the town harlot -- but have little success. At first, Leroy lies to Astrid that he sold all the candles. He tries to sell his boat to Mr. Gold, but when Gold finds out Leroy wants the money to help the nuns, it's a no-go. Gold can't wait to evict his tenants. Let's just say there's history there. I hope it involves the fairies softening his Rumpelstiltskin countenance from the Dark One, to the silly dilly he comes to be.

Eventually, Leroy confesses to Astrid that he was unable to sell the candles. But then, on the night of the Miner's Day festival, Leroy slams his pick-axe into the electrical transformer and puts out the lights. When Mary asks him what he's doing, he says, "Selling candles, sister." The candles sell out. The convent is saved. I am tired.

I haven't even gotten to Emma's investigation into Kathryn's disappearance, the "evidence" against David, or Mary Margaret's shame. I'll hit that all in the full recap, which will be up ASAP. In the meantime, please grade the episode at the top of the page and then join us in the forum, where we're lighting candles for you.

"Dreamy" is one of those episodes that leaves me flummoxed, because it's better than it ought to be. There's a lot about it I don't care for, on paper, but when I watch it (and I've watched it half a dozen times) I'm enchanted. At first, I thought someone dusted my TV with fairy dust, but the sparkle comes, in particularly, from three actors: guest star Amy Acker (Angel's Fred Burkle); series lead, Ginnifer Goodwin; and especially from the recurring Lee Arenberg. I'm not overwhelmed by the story itself, until these three tell it to me -- then I swoon. This talented trio elevates the story above the cloying (and sometimes disturbing) script. Let's get to it, shall we?

We open in the clouds above the Enchanted Forest. The Blue Boob Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) is training clumsy, fledgling fairy, Nova (Amy Acker). Nova crash lands into the clouds. Blue warns her to be careful. Nova is carrying the year's supply of fairy dust -- the most magically precious substance in all the land -- it powers the world. Yes, I went to an Angel Dust place, too, but this is a nice show, so I'm not going to cloud it up with awkward references to drugs I never even though about using.

Anyhow, Nova is dismayed to learn she'll be making year's dust run on her own, as she thought she would be a fairy godmother by then. Blue chuckles that Nova is a dreamer and says she is just beginning her journey. After Blue asks if Nova can bring all the dust safely back home she flies off and leaves her apprentice, who immediately spills some magenta magic through the clouds.

The fairy dust wafts over the earth and descends into a mine shaft, where it lands upon a giant egg -- one in a group of eight -- standing before hundreds more. The egg starts rocking. Dwarves Watchy (Richard Ian Cox) and Bossy (Ken Kramer) remark that it seems to be hatching hours earlier than expected. Of course they don't know it got dosed with fairy dust. The shell breaks open to reveal a fully grown, bearded and (thankfully) clothed Lee Arenberg (Grumpy/Dreamy and Leroy). As he is welcomed to the world, the as of yet unnamed dwarf looks around in wide-eyed wonder.

Sidebar: I saw people upset, because they thought the fairies used fairy dust to fertilize these eggs -- building their own little slave labor force. I don't think that's what's happening here. Grumpy's egg is the only one that gets dusted and it's because of the dust that he is going to be different. It's because of the dust that he will [SPOILER] be able to fall in love.

Storybrooke, Granny's Diner: Leroy digs into a hardboiled egg with such determination that I can't not think of him as a cannibal given that I just watched him hatch from one. When Mr. Clark (Gabe Khouth's Sneezy) and Walter (Faustino Di Bauda's Sleepy) ask him to slide down a seat, so that they can sit together, Leroy is surly in his refusal. Mr. Clark starts to tease Leroy about his sunny disposition, but is interrupted by his own sneeze -- aimed right at Leroy's plate. Yeah. That would put me off my breakfast too, Leroy.

Mary Margaret enters the diner and announces that Miner's Day is upon us, and the Storybrooke nuns are looking for volunteers to sell their handcrafted candles. Mary asks, "Who wants to join me?" The crowd turns from her and murmurs. She's still the town pariah, poor dear. When Leroy walks up to her, Mary thinks she's landed her first volunteer, but she's just standing in front of the door. Leroy wants to leave. Mary tries to appeal to him to help but he scoffs at her. "Quite a team we'd make. Town harlot. Town drunk. The only person in this town who people like less than me, is you. If you're coming to me, you're screwed." Mary, who has been holding back nervous tears the whole time, leaves the diner in disgrace.

Emma watched the whole scene play out and runs after Mary Margaret. She asks about Miner's Day. Mary explains it's an annual celebration of an old tradition. The nuns used to make candles and trade them with the miners for coal.

Emma: And I'm all? Mining? In Maine? Is that even a thing? Have they thought about lobsters?

Recapper: I'm thinking about lobster right now and it's fricking great.

Mary: I don't even know. It's more of a fundraiser these days but everyone loves the annual party.

Emma: Not judging by the crowd back at Granny's.

Mary: It's me. Last week I had ten volunteers. This week they dropped out. And I know it's because I'm a home-wrecker because some of them told me.

Audience: Told you so. I hope this isn't just a slut-shaming episode though, because after all, Mary Margaret isn't the one who was married. And? She wanted to tell the truth. What about David, that bastard?

Recapper: Don't hold your breath.

Audience: Damn it.

Mary: Love ruined my life.

Emma: Well, duty calls. Hang in there and let me know how I can help.

Recapper: Were you not paying attention? You could volunteer to sell some fricking candles.

We cut to the town square. People are decorating it for Miner's Day. Sister Astrid (Nova) is up on a ladder, trying to plug in some lights, when she knocks glitter off the ladder and onto Leroy. When I write about it this seems like a particularly artless way to give Sister Astrid and Leroy a parallel to the beginning of their Enchanted Forest story, but on screen it works because of Lee Arenberg and his wonderfully expressive face. Amy Acker helps suck me into the story as well.

Anyhow, Leroy is annoyed by this accidentally bedazzling until he looks up at the woman apologizing to him. Once he sees her, he is bedazzled in a whole new way. He is so charmed and blush-y, I start wondering if he should play Bashful, instead of Grumpy. Leroy climbs the ladder and fixes the dangerous situation with the lights. When he gets everything working Sister Astrid is effusive in her gratitude. She gets him to talk about his custodial job but he admits that what he really wants is to fix up his old clunker of a boat and sail around the world. Astrid tells him, "Someone once told me, you can do anything -- as long as you can dream it." He can't take his eyes off her as she makes her way back to the volunteer center.

Emma is at the town line collecting evidence from Kathryn's crashed car when Sidney arrives. He'd like to do a freelance story on the crash, so Emma lets him nose around and tells him that the Gym Teacher (Frederick) found the car on the side of the road, abandoned with the engine still running. And so wait -- he didn't call it in until morning? There had better be a reason for this in a future episode because right now it just seems like poor plotting.

When Sidney learns the car belongs to Kathryn Nolan, whose cheating husband just publicly left her, he points out there are some obvious suspects. Emma thinks he's jumping to conclusions and figures Kathryn just hitched a ride to Boston, at least until she finds Kathryn's still packed suitcase in the trunk of the car. When Emma says it's time to pull Kathryn's phone records she appears to be heading toward her cruiser -- as if she's going to leave. Sidney stops her though and says he can get them for her faster than she'll get them through official channels. Emma eagerly agrees. Dear woman, please tell me you are playing the player. I don't want our savior to be dumber than a box of hair. Soon David arrives. And why is that? He wouldn't be looking for Kathryn on his own. He'd figure she left for the city. Emma doesn't say she called him as she seems to be leaving. Ugh. Get me out of this scene. Oh, there's a commercial. Thank you.

Sidebar: Dear Forumites, you have got to get over Emma having pretty, fluffy hair. She is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, who was smuggled out of the Enchanted Forest, before the curse struck. She has to have princess hair. It's a damned character trait, for heaven's sake. I'm serious about this. If she was all bedraggled it would be wrong.

The newly hatched dwarfs are getting all cleaned up. And look the eight dwarfs we care about haven't been named yet, but I need someway in which to refer to them, so I'm going to call Grumpy Dreamy, because that will be his first dwarf name. Anyhow, Dreamy is so different from the Grumpy we've seen in episodes. He's all wide-eyed innocence and enthusiasm. He asks who the beautiful woman is -- the one he saw just before he hatched. Bossy scoffs at him and says he was dreaming. "There are no female Dwarfs. Dwarfs don't fall in love. Dwarfs don't get married. And Dwarfs don't have children. Why do you think you were hatched from an egg?" He then goes on to explain that what dwarfs do -- is work, "We love it. We even whistle while we do it." Whee! The dwarfs do the most important work in all the land. They mine diamonds which are ground into the fairy dust which lights the world.

Soon Bossy gives the eight newly hatched dwarf brothers their pickaxes. Their true names are revealed on the handles. First we see Stealthy (R.I.P., brother), then Happy, Doc, Sneezy (who sneezes as he gets his axe), Sleepy, Bashful (who cutely scoots out of view before we can get a look at him), Dopey, and finally Dreamy a.k.a. Grumpy. Bossy says, "The axe never lies, Dreamy." As they head out to work the dwarfs whistle "Heigh-Ho."

Storybrooke: Mary Margaret is working in the volunteer center when Leroy shows up and asks to help. Mary reminds him he took a far different stance that morning. He says, "Maybe I've seen the light." Mary tells him he can help her man the candle booth. Her voice is hard and cold as she says, "No swearing. No drinking. And I get to call all the shots."

Leroy listens in as across the room Mother Superior (Blue Boob Fairy) chastises Astrid. She's just as clumsy in this world as Nova was in the Enchanted forest. She accidentally ordered 12 dozen helium tanks instead of 12 tanks. The helium company won't take back the extras, which means Astrid has just squandered the order's stipend. They can't pay the rent! They're going to be out on their... habits. Mother Superior orders Astrid to fix the problem and reminds her she knows how their landlord feels about them. Did you guys play that little "You must pay the rent! But I can't pay the rent! I'll pay the rent. My hero! Curses, foiled again..." game when you were little? I can't get it out of my head because that's [SPOILER] the plot of this episode in a nutshell.

Once Mother is gone, Leroy approaches Astrid who explains the pickle they're in. The only way they have to raise money is to sell their candles but they'll need to sell a thousand to make up for the lost money. And last year they only sold about 42. Sheesh, how much does helium go for, anyhow? Leroy suggests she ask the landlord for a grace period. Sister Astrid explains that's unlikely as Mr. Gold is the landlord -- so hopefully we'll see him this week. Anyhow, Leroy promises Astrid that they'll sell all the candles this year. When Astrid gushes, Leroy blushes and our poor jaded Mary Margaret rolls her eyes.

Back at the town line, David doesn't understand what's going on. Emma says she's just trying to figure things out. When he says he last spoke to Kathryn yesterday afternoon, Emma says she knows there have been lies and needs to know if that's really the truth. David assures her it is. They haven't spoken since he ended things. When he got home, Kathryn's clothes were gone and he figured she went to Boston. Emma makes a point of mentioning she knows he's telling the truth. I am pinning my hopes on your superpower, Emma. Do not let me down.

When the phone records come out of Regina's Fax machine (or printer), Regina calls Sidney and tells him she has them. "I think you'll find them quite helpful." So, did she tamper with them, forge them, get someone else to tamper with or forge them or is she just damned lucky? Commercial.

Enchanted Forest: A year later, Dreamy is hard at work in the mines when he meets Nova, who is there to collect the yearly supply of fairy dust. He recognizes her as the beautiful woman he saw just before he was hatched and is immediately smitten. Still clumsy, at first, Nova can't shut off the fairy dust spigot. So it's Dreamy to the rescue. , Nova accidentally lays the bag full of fairy dust on a conveyor belt. It's headed toward the grinder and some sort of furnace. Dreamy saves the bag and the day. When he returns it to Nova she laments that she'll never be a fairy godmother. Dreamy says he thinks she'll be a great one. "I believe you can do anything you want -- as long as you dream it." Awww. I know. I'm not snarky this week. I can't even bring myself to harsh on the fairies costumes, even though the people in the forum who compared the tutus and streamers to jelly fish, really aren't wrong. I feel like I'm four years old -- at least when I'm with these two. And, were I four years old? I would rock that pink, fru-fru Nova costume. It's so fluffy and sparkly and flowery and IT IS LOVE ITSELF, I TELL YOU!

Anyhow, Dreamy is not the only smitten kitten in the scene. Nova takes an immediate liking to him, too. She tells him that she gets to spend very little time in his world, so at sunset, she'll be going up to Firefly Hill to watch the fireflies. Anyhow, when Dreamy says he hardly gets out of the mine Nova makes it pretty clear she'd like him to meet her that night. Innocent that he is, Dreamy tells her to have a great time. Before he can walk off, Nova stops him. "Dreamy? Thanks. You're my hero."

Storybrooke: Mary Margaret and Leroy don't manage to sell a single candle on the town square, so Leroy suggests they go door-to-door. Mary reminds him that people hate them. That is Leroy's point. He figures people will pay them just to leave. Heh.

Across the way, Emma finds Sidney at a Ring-Toss booth. She tells him Kathryn never showed up at law school registration. They're interrupted by Mary and Leroy. Mary asks Emma if she looks more sympathetic with our without her scarf. I think maybe her scarf should be tied around David's neck, like a noose, but then I remember the curse and that he is her true love. I think I'm just angry that town's wrath is aimed at the woman, rather than the cheating husband -- the one who broke vows he never actually took. I know. I know. I need some perspective. After Emma advises Mary to keep the scarf on, Mary and Leroy leave. Sidney asks Emma why she's not questioning "Pixie Cut" who has motive a mile high. Again, Emma alludes to her superpower by insisting she knows Mary and knows she had nothing to do with Kathryn's disappearance. Oh please, Emma. Please writers. Please, please, please don't let her be dumb. Emma tells Sidney to get the phone records, and marches off.

Mary Margaret and Leroy do no better selling door-to-door than they were doing at the candle booth. The first guy who answers their knock is a long, lean fellow, nibbling a carrot. He looks Mary up and down with a salacious leer that she tries to ignore. When Leery's stocky wife comes to the door, I realize he must be Jack Spratt. Mrs. Spratt nudges Jack out of the way and sneers that they're not interested. Door after door slams in the face of our not-so-dastardly duo.

Enchanted Forest, Pub: While the rest of the dwarfs are living it up, Dreamy feels out of sorts. He tells Bossy he can't sleep or eat and just doesn't feel like himself. Belle is there! She chimes in that Dreamy is in love. Dreamy wants to know what love is. Bell tells him it's wonderful and amazing. "Love is hope." Since it's so great, Dreamy can't figure out why he feels so bad. Belle explains he needs to be with the one he loves. I love Emilie de Raven as Belle. I hope we get a lot more of her. Dreamy tells Belle about Nova watching the fireflies on Firefly Hill. Belle laughs and says Nova was inviting him to be with her. Even though Belle, herself, is still heartbroken she encourages Dreamy to go. "Find your love. Find your hope. Find your dreams."

Sidebar: There's been a lot of discussion about when this scene takes place in the larger timeline -- is it before Queenie tells Rumpy that Belle leapt to her doom, or after? Some reported comments from the writers were poorly phrased and confused the issue, further. For now, for me, I'm assuming Belle just left Rumpy's and stopped in Dwarf Town, or what have you, either for a rest or for good. Regina's visit to Rumpy's estate could have come any time after Belle left, and we don't get the Fairy Tale stories chronologically, so it's not worth breaking my brain. Joss Whedon once told Buffy fans to "Trust the tale, not the teller." That's not original to him but it's where I first remember hearing it and it's generally good advice.

Storybrooke, Volunteer Center: Mary and Leroy arrive to update Sister Astrid on their failure, but when Leroy sees his beloved nun, he just can't give her the bad news. Instead, he lies that he and Mary sold out the entire candle inventory. Astrid jumps for joy and hugs Leroy. We cut to commercial to give Mary Margaret time to contain her ire.

Mary pulls Leroy aside and hisses at him about lying about five thousand dollars they don't have. He tells her he has a plan and asks her to give him to the end of the day. It takes Mary a moment to realize Leroy can't bear the thought of the nuns getting evicted because he has feelings for Astrid. She points out the object of his affection is a nun. "Could you possibly pick anyone less available?" Leroy: "Says the girl who went after a married guy. At the end of the day you're no better than I am. You've got your reasons for being here. I got mine. And when I say I'm going to get that $5,000, I'm going get that $5,000."

Enchanted Forest, Just after sunset: Dreamy sprints up Firefly Hill and finally finds Nova, who admits she didn't think he would come. She brings him to the edge and shows him the lights of the village, the kingdom and beyond. Dreamy is impressed that she's seen so much of the world, but Nova says flying over it and being a part of it aren't the same thing. He's still impressed she's seen so much as all he's seen are diamonds, dirt and dwarfs. He then proposes that they see the world together. They could get a boat and sail all over it -- explore everything the world has to offer. Just then the fireflies appear. Thrilled by them, and by Dreamy's idea, she gives him a big kiss on the lips and says they should do just that. "Tomorrow night. After I drop off the dust, let's meet back here. We'll run off together. We'll see the world." Dreamy holds her hand and looks at the beautiful scene below. "Sounds like dream come true."

Storybrooke, Waterfront. Leroy is trying to sell his boat to Mr. Gold for $5,000. Gold counters with $3,000, but Leroy needs $5,000. "Look, you don't even have to pay me -- just forgive one month's rent for the nuns. You can have the boat. They'll pay you back, eventually. It's a good deal. You get everything."

Mr. Gold: I am having no part in helping the nuns. I cannot wait to get rid of them -- such distasteful tenants they are.

Leroy: Who doesn't like nuns?

Mr. Gold: Let's just say we have a history.

Recapper: Did you go to St. Joe's parochial school, with my cousin Maureen?

After Gold leaves, Sister Astrid shows up with a pie for Leroy. He hustles back up on deck and hurries to cover up the candles with a tarp, but he doesn't do such a good job. Astrid thanks him for all his help and gushes about the boat, but then she sees the candles. Leroy confesses that he failed to sell them. He lied because he was afraid to let her down. "I'm sorry, Astrid. I guess you believed in the wrong guy." She leaves, and doesn't even take the pie with her. I would never cut it as a nun. Gimme back my pie, lying Leroy!

Over at the Sheriff's office, Sidney brings Emma Kathryn's phone records from the day she disappeared. They include an eight minute call between Kathryn and David. Emma says it's impossible given David's statement. Sidney insists he's lying. Emma AGAIN points out that she knows when people are lying. Sidney points to the records. "It's right here on paper, Emma. Phone records don't lie. People do, and our friend David does it better than most." Emma looks Sidney right in the eye. I hope her Spidey senses are tingling.

Mary's having stiff drink at Granny's when Leroy joins her. He shares his bad news. Mary says he was right. "I was dreaming if I thought the town harlot and the town drunk could accomplish anything." Oh man, I hate Snow White as the town harlot. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it.

Enchanted Forest, Eight Dwarfs House, Night: Dreamy is sneaking out to meet Nova, when he's caught by Stealthy. Eventually, Dreamy tells all his brothers his plan to run away with Nova. Although the brothers don't understand, they are happy for him, and rush to hug him.

Bossy stops Dreamy on the road and lectures him about his responsibility. When Dreamy says he loves Nova, Bossy tells him dwarfs aren't capable of love. Now that's clearly not true because it's obvious Dreamy's brothers love him. If Bossy means dwarfs aren't capable of loving women, I guess that's a different argument. I can't decide if I'm glad that it's probably the fairy dust that altered Dreamy. Part of me wishes he was just naturally different and brave enough to admit it -- like a coming out story of sorts. Anyhow, he asks Bossy, "What if I'm different? What if you're wrong?"

The Blue Boob Fairy appears and tells Dreamy that Bossy is right. All he feels is a dream. She tells him if he runs off with Nova, it won't end well. Nova will lose her wings. If he returns to the mines and give Nova a chance to be the fairy she's meant to be, they will bring joy to the world. She says Nova can be a great fairy, if he lets her. "The choice is yours."

Many fans are pissed at the Blue Fairy. I'm not -- at least not much. I think she and Bossy are wrong, but I think they think they're right. I don't think they're trying to be mean. I think they're giving misguided advice.

Storybrooke, Granny's Diner, Night: Mary reminds Leroy that there can never been anything between him and Sister Astrid. He says Astrid is the first person who believed he could do anything and he just didn't want to disappoint her. Mary says there are consequences to going through with something when the world tells you not to and points out how she is now the town pariah. Leroy asks her if she regrets her good memories with David. When she admits she doesn't, Leroy says life is all about holding onto good memories. All he wanted was one moment with Sister Astrid -- a moment to give him hope that any dream is possible. "You've had all that Mary Margaret so stop feeling sorry for yourself and enjoy -- because I haven't." Mary says the dream wasn't worth it. It's then that Leroy hatches a plan.

We cut to the town square. Leroy is on the top of a building, high above the Miner's Day Celebration. Mary finally catches up with him. She's afraid he's going to jump. He laughs and says he'd never do that because he might hurt someone. "I'm solidly built." Heh. Instead, he grabs a pick-axe and takes out the electrical transformer. Sparks fly. The square is plunged into darkness. Mary asks what he is doing. Leroy: "I'm selling candles, sister." Raise your hand if you hate that Leroy, Mary and Astrid's problem is solved by vandalism. Thanks, me too.

Enchanted Forest, Firefly Hill: Dreamy finds Nova waiting for him. She magics up a telescope, gives it to him, and then points out the boat sailing by, in the water, below. It's fully stocked for their adventure. Dreamy gets right to the point and tells her he can't go with her. Nova reminds him of their plans and dreams. Dreamy says he belongs in the mines and she belongs with the other fairies. That's never going to change. Nova says he controls what changes in his life and reminds him he's special. He asks what makes them different from any other dwarf and fairy out there. Nova says, "Our love." He says it's just a dream, and her dream is to be a fairy godmother. Nova realizes Dreamy must have talked to Blue Boobs and demands to know what she said. Dreamy tells her it doesn't matter. He won't stand in the way of her happiness. Nova: "You're my happiness. I love you. Don't you love me?" Dreamy says, "I'm a dwarf, Nova. I can't love." Nova sobs as he walks off.

When Dreamy returns to the mines, he is no longer the happy, dreamy innocent he once was. He brothers and Bossy welcome him back. Dreamy couldn't mean it less when he says there's no place he'd rather be. He attacks a particularly large rock with his pick-axe until the axe is destroyed. Dreamy demands another from Bossy. When he gets it, the name that appears on the handle is Grumpy.

Storybrooke: Mary Margaret and Leroy are thrilled when they realize they've sold out of candles. Mary tells him to take the money to Sister Astrid and have his moment. He takes the lockbox to Astrid and gives her the good news. Astrid can't believe he sold them all. "You made it happen!" Leroy says, "You have no idea." When Astrid is at a loss for words, Leroy tells her she's welcome. He says after he fixes up his boat maybe she can be his first passenger. Astrid smiles as she said she'd like that. Leroy: "Well then, that's what we'll do, Sister." They take in the sight of the town square lit by candlelight.

Regina stomps into the Sheriff's office and reminds Emma it's been 24 hours since her "friend" Kathryn went missing. Emma says she's working on it but she's not going to disclose information at this stage of the investigation. Regina threatens her. If Emma is covering for somebody or not doing her job, Regina will find someone who will do it. Regina's threats to get Emma replaced are getting old, Show. Just sayin'... Once Emma is alone she looks like she's thinking it all over. Please don't be dumb, girl. Please!

Back at the celebration, Mary makes a "sold out" sign, blows out her candle and walks to her car. There's still some of the red, "TRAMP" graffiti on the windows. Sheeesh, David, maybe since YOU haven't been getting slut-shamed all week you could have taken care of that for her. Ugh. Anyhow, when Mary gets to the car she has second thoughts. She squares her shoulders and heads back to the celebration. Granny is the first person to greet her, lights Mary's candle, and gives her a warm smile. Mary tries to hold back the tears as she walks through the festival. David is watching her from afar when Emma approaches him and says they need to talk. "I need you to come to the Sheriff's station with me, and tell me everything." David is confused since he thought he already did. Emma says, "So did I." Mary stops when she sees Emma load David into the back of the cruiser. He looks up at her, and we fade to black.

I'll be back Monday Morning with my recaplet of Sunday's, "Red-Handed." In the meantime, please grade the episode at the top of the page and then join us in the forum, where we're lighting candles for you.
