By Jacob Clifton | Season 3 | Episode 4
Bullet notices that turquoise ring in Kallie's porn video, meaning that it is from the night she disappeared. (Seems like she had one of those Rosie Larsen kind of nights where you go everywhere and do everything, and then die.) The cops raid that motel Grace Zabriskie owns, and it turns out that the pornos are being made in a secret room behind a fake Scooby Doo wall in the motel. They haul Grace Zabriskie in for questioning, but she is batshit insane like always and really unhelpful. (Also unhelpful: Goldie the Limping Pimping Molester, who gives an impromptu press conference about how he is not Killing girls, just rapin' 'em and distributin' porn of 'em and trying to be a literal pimp of 'em.)
A vice cop sends Linden to another of the porno girls, who has since grown out of The Life and now has two hobbies, being pregnant all the time and smoking cigarettes all the time. She helps them figure out -- which over the course of the episode has become blatantly obvious -- that the porn maker is Joe Mills, the taxicab driver. And if you were guessing that he is also Kallie's mom's boyfriend, you were correct about that too. Bonus! Not for Kallie certainly, but bonus nonetheless. Bonus also for Jacob, because I love beautiful Joe Mills and I love how he gives his child hookers French fries and I love how everything horrible goes back to Joe Mills, except for the Killing of course.
Imagine that! If they solved the mystery in episode five, like the opposite of the first season. "Yeah, we did some investigative work and were deliberate in tracking down our leads, and then found incontrovertible proof that it was the person we thought it was. No red herrings or cases of mistaken identity, just good old-fashioned police work." And then all you bastards would be like, "That's not how a show is supposed to be!" and Veena Sud would say, like, "Make up your minds, you guys!"
So yes, kiddie porn and bad stepdads and murders, all of that is soul-killingly bleak -- have you seen this show before? -- but it's nothing compared to Twitch's day: His probation officer forces him into buggery, which sends him to the needle, which sends him to some punk-rock dystopia that looks like The Warriors, which sends his face into permanent fucked-upness. Which would be merely hilarious because Twitch is terrible, but then you remember that he was going to ride his face to the bigtime, and then that just makes it even funnier. Twitch and Lyric are the worst.
Holder continues to fall deeply in love with Bullet, and vice versa, but the real love triangle is Holder's partners, new and old. Man that Gregg Henry does not care for Linden. They get into a whole fight that is just basically them screaming "I love Holder more than you do!" over and over and it's delightful. Oh, and also in Holder's relationships, Jewel Staite is an ADA. You know what I bet is going to happen? I bet she's going to be intrigued but then eventually appalled by Linden's unconventional approach to solving crimes. That would be my guess.
What else? Ray Seward and his bullshit, more of the same of that. He is forming a strange bond with that man who never shuts up, and mean ol' Becker does not like that one bit, because he hates happiness. He is also obsessed with making Ray take antibiotics -- which I personally think are probably poison or broken glass pills or something, you know, like how they have those pills that are just broken glass? -- and then beat up the babbling man and he takes the pills because compassion is Ray Seward's weakness or something. Oh, and Becker's MILFy/crazy wife wants to bone Aaron Douglas, because she has good taste in dudes. So that'll be grimy and sleazy, just like everything else in this entire world.
Week: After the broadcast premiere of Black Swan on AMC probably you are going to want something to pick your spirits up and make you feel less crazy, but instead, AMC will be airing an all-new episode of The Killing in which the few characters who have henceforth avoided getting raped will probably get raped and everybody will smoke cigarettes the entire time and that's why Seattle is so foggy, and so very full of sex crimes.
PREVIOUSLY
Twitch's probation officer was a good dude who wanted him to think hard about his choices, or so it seemed. Kallie's mom's boyfriend was the proud driver of a truck, or so it seemed. Lyric's last john was the kind of dude who cared about the welfare of his underage hookers, or so it seemed. Grace Zabriskie was her normal kind of crazy and not the kind that has secret rooms and hidden panels for kiddie-porn making, or so it seemed. Goldie came off like a real piece of garbage rapist, but that part is true.
NOW
Kallie's unable to answer when the Mysterious Voice asks her whether she is a virgin, I guess because what a thing to ask a hooker. It's just mean, really. But then you realize he is on some -level shit when he goes, Why are you crying, little girl? Ugh. Please just don't be Joe Mills. Don't let beautiful Joe Mills be one more thing Seattle takes away, along with sunshine.
Holder: "So in addition to all the other horrific things that are always happening to you, do you know who this porn man is?"
Bullet: "I do not. I have heard that sometimes we are offered the chance to do these things, but not Kallie. She would never make a porn tape -- just have sex for money in the moment, you understand."
Holder: "And yet clearly you see before you, Kallie here on this..."
Bullet: "Do you know that old motel? Of the crazy old bitch?"
Holder: "Ah, yes. I am aware of this place. This is where the movies are made?"
So while they're perseverating on this Voice of the porn man, how maybe or what if it is Goldie -- which it isn't, but nobody knows that's impossible quite yet -- Bullet notices that the ring she stole for Lyric, and then gave to Kallie, is in the video, which means this video was made after Bullet realized she was missing, which was three days ago. It was the last thing that happened, actually, if you recall. So apparently that is enough for a search warrant of the Crazy Old Bitch Motel. And then this, amazingly, happens, so fast you might miss it:
Bullet: "You think she's at Mama Dips'?"
Holder: "You go home, Bullet."
Bullet: "...?"
What a thing to say. "Oh right, you have no home. Because you are homeless. It is your main thing." He recovers quickly, makes it about their burgeoning affection, he's like, "Just wait here exactly for me, and I promise that I will come back specifically to you."

CRAZY OLD BITCH MOTEL
Linden is unprepared for how squalid the reality actually is here because she was not here the last time, when Holder threatened to have gay sex here for a whole week. She has not gotten a load of Mama Dips and the bucket of crazy she is slinging. But because it is Linden, you'd have to watch closely to see her be appalled in one tiny corner of her otherwise placid affect. Mama Dips is kind of admirable in that she does not give a shit, which is a thing they have in common.
Cops: "Mama Dips, we have a warrant. As you suggested."
Dips: "Fuck your warrant."
Cops: "But the rule of law!"
Dips: "The law can suck my dick!"
Finally Linden has had enough of her guff, and gets inside the bank-teller situation where Mama Dips lives, and notices a button she keeps trying to push, like a warning button or the opposite of an alarm button in a bank. (You push it and I guess cops just run away!) Eventually they realize she is thinking of signaling to the mysterious videotaping room, which it turns out is behind a pretend wall. All you do is tip one book forward and then a quarter-twist of a Beethoven bust, and the whole thing slides open... To reveal a wonderworld of kiddie porn.
(Of all the wonderful books of John Bellairs, my favorite were always the Anthony Monday ones. It was very hard transitioning from a literary diet of 100 percent magical horses to books about things other than magical horses. Thanks, John Bellairs! Without you and Susan Cooper I probably still would not be clear on all the things books might be about. And I know I would spend a lot less time thinking about secret passageways.)
Not Linden, though. Linden's immediately like, "Clearly that is a false panel wall." Inside an unfinished chest at the foot of the bed -- where one might normally store linens, for example in a bedroom, say, or a guestroom -- there is a bright blue teddybear with his hand-feet handcuffed to his feet-feet. In case you were wondering what's the most fucked-up thing, it's that: Blue teddybear in bondage, ass up in the air.
C BLOCK
Mean Guards: "I wish there were other ways to make Ray Seward feel bad. We should all think of some."
Blabbering Man: "Do you see? He was removing his tattoo of the A to prove that he doesn't care about anything, not even the letter A!"
Mean Guards: "But sure he has other kinds of weakness. Perhaps such as a weakness to disease. This time, we shall torture him through antibiotics. If he takes the antibiotics, we win and he loses. If he doesn't take the antibiotics, nobody really wins, but he definitely doesn't win."

I mean, I guess that probably the infectious agents on Death Row are mad resistant, right? So hopefully the pills are poisoned, or something, because either way that is some serious Beckett shit. If this has really become your definition of success, then Ray Seward has already won. You're just trapped in a room inside his head, if you need this that bad.
Future Child: "Daddy, how do you know when you're a man? What's the best thing you ever did?"
Future You: "I broke the will of a man wrongly imprisoned by the state."
Future Child: "How did you do that, Daddy?"
Future You: "He was like, I will not take these antibiotics because I am going to die in less than a month so it is a waste of antibiotics!"
Future Child: "Go on..."
Future You: "But later, he did."
Future Child: "I'm so glad you're my Daddy. I'm so proud of you."
THE STATION
Skinner: "Oh man that old lady looks crazy, who is that?"
Linden: "That is the eponymous Crazy Old Bitch from the Crazy Old Bitch Motel. Have you ever seen Thoroughly Modern Millie? She's like that, without the racist Yellow Peril overtones. She thinks she's helping, but you know. Not really that helpful. She had a little button to warn the pornographers and everything. Real slick outfit."
Skinner: "Was it Goldie on the tapes?"
Linden: "This season would be four episodes long if it were. At this rate, we still haven't figured out what kind of sex criminal Pastor Dave even is yet."
Skinner: "You know, maybe Kallie isn't involved in my serial killer task force. You still haven't connected the bodies to the videos. So maybe everybody is just wasting my time trying to find this dumb girl."
Reddick: "Fine, but first let's watch Holder interrogate this old lady. You can see how much better he is now that he is my partner, and not yours. Check out how that's all I am about this week. I will keep talking about that forever, okay?"
Linden: "If you think your approval is something that I even register, much less desire, you have a vastly inaccurate idea of what I am all about."
Holder: "Who is the Mysterious Voice? I hope it's not Joe Mills."
Dibs: "It's me! I just love asking little girls creepy questions."
Holder: "That is the voice of a man, lady."
Dibs: "That's not very open-minded of you, cis scum. I resent the implication that old ladies cannot also be sex predators who are not ladies and can be in two places at once."

Holder: "Your single-minded devotion to covering up things that should not be covered up is like admirable, if that were a thing that could be admirable, but as it is mostly it just doesn't make sense. Acting like I'm the Viet Cong over here, just humbly trying to figure out if a girl got her head cut off yet. You are only seeming more and more crazy."
Dibs: "You're only seeming more and more crazy. Fuck you! Go get me a Diet Coke and a go fuck yourself, Blondie. Let's make a little video right now, how about that. Are you a virgin?"
Holder: "This is some level shit."
Dibs: "You are not my supervisor!"
Linden: "This bitch is old and crazy."
Reddick: "So let's follow Goldie around like we keep failing to do."
Linden: "You are betting on him for no other reason than that you found those tapes and he is a horrible limping rapist. That does not make him a serial killer, Detective. Why does no one care about the truth?"
Reddick: "Okay but I'm just going to follow Goldie around."
Linden: "Then I shall go say egregiously offensive shit to Kallie's mother, in my typical oblivious fashion."
Holder: "Carl, I know that you love me and I love you too, but please stop being so awful to Sarah Linden. I adore her."
Reddick: "But I have to be jealous and mean and obstructive! You are my protégé!"
Holder: "I know but you just need to understand that I will turn on you in one second. I don't mind ruining my own career and I won't care about bringing you down with me. Not with Linden back in the picture. Not once my transformation is complete."
Holder: "Bullet, do you want some baby carrots? I have food issues, they crop up a lot."
Bullet: "I prefer to eat mainly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated trans fats, by and large."
Holder: "Did you know that rabbits have three eyelids?"
Bullet: "Yes because I took a zoology class at my boarding school, before whatever happened. Back before we both became Slim Shady."
Holder: "Eat some carrots. I worry. You are, in some ways, even more feral than my best friend Sarah Linden. And her ass is straight crazy."
Bullet: "I will care for myself to the degree that I am able. Twitch, on the other hand, will not fare well in this episode at all. The bell tolls not for me, Stephen Holder."

THE TRAILER OF DANETTE
Linden: "Human hairdresser. You work without licensure or permit, here in this trailer."
Danette: "I have a bad attitude for you, free of charge."
Linden: "Did you know there is a serial killer and your daughter is a homeless with about a thousand problems that make her a perfect victim? Each of which are visible from a hundred yards? Starting with Amanda Bynes piercings in her face? Can I see her dental records?"
Danette: "Oh yes, let me get them from the china hutch where I keep them to our fine china and loose diamonds we like to keep around."
Linden: "What I was trying not to say right away is that she is a hooker."
Danette, verbatim: "It's just a phase. She'll grow out of it!"
I like to think that as a parent I would be pretty laid back. But damn.
Linden: "Sit your motherfucking negligent ass down and watch this pornographic tape your daughter was forced to make by a mysterious person that Jacob has already figured out who it is."
Danette: "That doesn't sound like a good time to me."
Linden: "What about the name Goldie? Nothing? Bullet said Kallie was headed here because she couldn't get a bed at Beacon..."
Danette: "I was with my boyfriend. She knocked, but I wouldn't let her in."
Linden: "There is a special place in Hell reserved just for you."
Danette: "Because that was the last thing that happened between us before her disappearance?"
Linden: "No, just because it happened."
And it's what your mother did to you, Sarah, and basically what you did to Jack.
But I feel like it's a clue, that Danette was with her boyfriend at the time of Kallie going all over town getting into trouble but not murdered because guess who her boyfriend is, and so what else did she get up to that night, between knocking on the door here and then later going to that motel to yell in the parking lot and make movies with the same guy again?
I think probably what happened is that she took the ferry over to the Indian casino so she could look out a window, and then a mayoral candidate's assistant knocked her out and put her in a car trunk, let her out, chased her around the woods for a while before putting her back in the car trunk, but then an Internet escort -- who was also coincidentally a relative -- pushed that car into a swamp. I bet that's what happened. Spoiler alert.

TWITCH'S BAD DAY STARTS IMMEDIATELY
Is it weird that my first response was like, "Oh, a Subaru Outback? Homeboy's getting raped."
Lyric: "Oh good, your probation officer. Last visit and then we can move to LA!"
Twitch: "Nothing's gonna stop us now, baby!"
Lyric: "The future is so bright that I might have to wear shades. Knock 'em dead at your probation visit, buddy."
Probation Officer: "So I have tainted your drug sample despite my earlier protestations that you were too smart to end up like all these other kids. Turns out you are not."
Twitch: "Fine, so what -- a blowjob? Cool, ante up. Later on I will be sad about how you've misused your authority and even the people who are nice to you will eventually force you to give them blowjobs, but for now..."
Probation Officer: "Sorry, no. But to teach you about quote a 'sense of decency,' I am going to be sodomizing you in the back of this Subaru Outback."
Twitch: "That doesn't sound like me..."
Probation Officer: "Don't get so hung up on labels. I'm not gay either, I just happen to be about to rape a guy right now. I always say you don't rape a gender, you rape the person. You know what I mean?"
Twitch: "Aw, nuts."

Newbie Guard: "Please take this antibiotic or you will be infected!"
Seward: "I will not. I resist."
Talking Man: "Here is a barely related story about one time I had a thing with my ear."
Seward: "First of all, stop that story before its dramatic conclusion makes everybody barf. Second of all, you are guilty of your Death Row crime. I know this because you never shut up about it, whereas I am innocent and thus never talk about my crime I didn't do. We've all got a death sentence."
Talking Man: "Death Row has made of you a bummer, sir."

Linden: "The mother is incorrect. Kallie has been missing since that time. She left from there and then somehow also made this porn."
Caroline: "You need to let all the johns and junkies you got in your raid of that motel go. The DA is focusing on Mama Dips."
Reddick: "In Goldie news because I am still all about Goldie because this show is all about going after the right people for the wrong reason and vice versa, he started his busy career of raping when he was 15."
Linden: "Not that he has any connection to the dead girls."
Reddick: "I just hate you."
While poring over screengrabs of the porn girls, Linden notices Caroline and Holder being romantic. She loves it! It truly is adorable. But she is a multitasker: One of the young ladies in the screengrabs actually is a dead girl after all. This is only irritating to Reddick because he doesn't really care about Kallie or the dead girls or anything except winning some vague victory over Linden -- and then it is time to go see what Goldie is up to.

Becker is not at all happy when he sees Seward cautiously and then sorta hysterically bonding with Talking Man over the many scars of his body. It seems he was sentenced to Adult Gen Pop when he was 16, the first time he went to jail and his father first beat him up with a baseball bat in order to be a man before he went to jail. I do not know the ways of jail but I do like to think, again as a parent, that I would give my child other life skills than "able to get beat up with a baseball bat."
TWITCH
I don't know what kind of a prostitute Twitch was before today, but apparently this incident with the PO was enough to send him straight back to the smack. Few things are more uncomfortable than watching someone do heroin, especially if they are already having a bad day, and this show loves few things more than splashing around in ghastly meditations, so we watch that for a while. I think that the smaller your world is, the more importance you place on whatever identity you've cobbled together, which is good in most cases because it keeps your alive, but can also be bad. First because every problem started out as a solution, and this is how; but also because once that goes sour, and it always does, then you're the problem: Everything that you think you are is standing in the way of the person you'd be better off being.
I have a friend -- a friend-of-a-friend, I guess, but he's close with my two closest friends -- a born hustler, and every time I see him I can see him trying to figure out what I want from him, or what we can do for each other. I don't want anything from him, I just like him, but it's not like you can explain that to a hustler, so I know it gets confusing in each other's orbits. And this specific thing that these kids are dealing with is something I've been thinking about all week: How you start out choosing to give people what they want, and it's so easy to let that just become you. You drop out the middle step where you're making a choice to do it -- maybe out of a genuine desire to be less cynical even -- but then that choice becomes what you are. And that is terrifying to me, this idea of just Xing yourself out of the equation altogether and becoming the person who makes other people happy, or performs for other people, that your value would come out of that. I mean, I'm probably particularly not like that, but it's the kind of void I can't look into for all that long.

Bullet: "Oh great, and now you are doing heroin."
Twitch: "Bullet, please do not give me your usual hell today. I am unprepared for it."
Bullet: "I was planning on yelling at you for buying drugs with all of Lyric's money, but I see that you are really upset."
Realizing that he is not going to be able to fully enjoy his heroin, Twitch lurches out into the street and Bullet follows him, her whole Mama Bear thing overriding the fact that by any measure Twitch is even more useless than Lyric, who is already just super useless. Or maybe she saw it on his face, that same thing. Maybe she recognized it. I don't like to think that, but it isn't necessarily stigmatizing: There are a million ways to get broken.

Reddick: "You are putting your career in her hands! Not my hands!"
Holder: "My career is in no hands but my own. And those of the fickle fate that follows Sarah Linden everywhere she goes. The ill wind she represents."
Goldie offers chase, with a random lady -- do any of them really think it's Kallie? -- in his car. They drive and drive, toward the Dead Girl Swamp, and then he randomly gets out and addresses all the news vans and people that are there. Turns out Goldie is pretty smart:
"Yo! I got an official announcement. My name is Goldie Willis. This is my moms, and I'm not a serial killer. Goldie Willis ain't no Pied Piper, leading little girls to their death. They're not even telling you about this other girl that's missing, that could be in the hands of the real killer right now..."
DANETTE
Well, everybody goes apeshit. First of all, what a good name for this serial killer. There are so many things to appreciate about Goldie! Too bad they are outweighed by all the other things about Goldie. Kallie's mom is so dissociated that -- while he is on the TV literally talking about her dead and tortured missing daughter -- she is painting her toenails, and answering a phone call from her boyfriend: Turns out he didn't come by last night like he said he would, he stood her up in fact, but I don't know if that's important because the timeline is already making my eyes cross.
C BLOCK
Becker: "Another thing I don't like is that Seward is making friends with his fellow Death Row inmate! I have to ruin everything all the time! How did it go with his antibiotics?"
Henderson: "Just fine, I guess? You are really fixated on it so I will not tell you the truth of the matter, which is that I don't have the dedication necessary to wage a war of wills -- with the strongest person on this show, besides Linden -- about something I don't care about and nobody really cares about except you, and now him."
Becker: "Come home with me so my weird MILF wife can be all weird on you. We will drink beer, even after you feel uncomfortable."
Henderson: "That sounds awful, but not as awful as going home where my wife and child are. She keeps asking what it's like at work, and if I think about that I will kill myself."
TWITCH
Gets all Ratso Rizzo on a car in the street, and then heads to meet a drug dealer at some dangerous park run by a person named Tank. It is very curious, all these names that they have. Bullet is not supportive of this plan because Tank will not suffer Twitch to live, but I don't really know the details. Twitch is feeling self-destructive on several levels, leave it at that as far as the logistics. I do get why Twitch would do this, offer himself up to violence in this way, but it has to do with guy things and I don't know that I would really have the words to explain it.
| Season 3 | Episode 4
...Well actually, Seward already did. His father took a baseball bat to him so he would never be a bitch. That covers it.
Me, I'm more about the disappointment in play. I mean, how horrible to be a person of such limited maturity and capacity as Twitch, and somehow summon up the power to kick heroin -- the most addictive thing there is and a thing most people with actual resources cannot stop being addicted to -- and still you get raped and called a liar about it. I feel that many of Twitch's decisions, both today and previously, are pretty dubious, but this one? "Fuck you, I'm doing heroin then." That makes total sense. I think Ray Seward would agree.
FRANCIS BECKER'S HOUSE
Is grim and gritty and weird and his kid is weird and his wife is way weird and the second Henderson sits down he realizes he has made a terrible mistake, but now he is stuck. He has no exit strategy. Once the wife starts with this "you have the shoulders for football" stuff, Becker registers that in fact there has been a mistake made, it's too late. They're all stuck. Finally, unable to get the wife out of the room, he goes to get more beer from the garage himself, which is just long enough for the wife to get even weirder on Henderson about how Frank is gone all the time.
Which Henderson knows -- because they are working the same double shifts -- but Mrs. Becker doesn't seem to get that, so instead of it just being basic information he already knows, it is actually a secret code about how probably Henderson should come over some time and have a bunch of sex with her. I don't blame her, Henderson's famously adorable, but I do wonder why you would play those kind of tricks on Francis Becker, whose entire family are sadists as like, their actual vocation.
Becker: "I brought more beer you don't want. And I am onto you!"
Henderson: "About sleeping with your wife? I have not yet done that."
Becker: "No, about the antibiotics!"
Henderson: "Well, okay. He wouldn't take the pill and I gave up."
Becker: "I am really into this whole thing with the antibiotics!"
Henderson: "I guess because you are worried he will get an infection, and not because he poked out your cousin's eye and you are trying to poison him."
TANK'S PARK
All the people in Tank's park are punk rockers! They ride skateboards and they have liberty spikes and they are very hardcore motherfuckers. And one thing they don't like -- besides everything because fuck you! -- is Twitch coming to their park, which suits Twitch just fine because he is feeling a little bit nihilistic. They yell at Bullet too, but they're not idiots: Obviously Twitch is the one to attack. He needs it.

So they beat him forever and ever while Bullet just watches, and -- I'd imagine -- thinks about how much of a drag this is, since he's a douchebag and she only cares insofar as he is Lyric's quote-unquote boyfriend, and because of that ineffable thing she saw on his drugged-out face before. But since she is a good guy, is swiftly coming to these conclusions about his day so far, she doesn't even take umbrage when they all start calling each other queers and swinging their skateboards around in the air and whatever.
I have sympathy for the rough day he is having, but I also think that if you want your face to be your career, which is literally all the kid has ever said out of his mouth is that he wants to be a model or actor, you should treat it with more kindness and care than putting it in places where it will be beaten bloody, or go around requesting to be curbstomped in such unequivocal ways. Once you realize that your dream is to be a surgeon, for example, that kind of means you should give up your hobby of smashing your hands with giant rocks. Everything is a give and take in this world.
THE STATION
Skinner: "I especially like the part where Goldie, the limping teenage rapist pimp, makes us seem like the bad guys just because we keep arresting him for no reason."
Holder: "If you think about it, Reddick, this is all kind of your fault. Our secret serial killer is now the most interesting thing in the world to everybody."
Skinner: "Oh, and they're all calling our unsub the Pied Piper now. Clever. And any traction I was getting in repairing my career is now getting reamed out of me by the chief of police. My whole day is going pretty bad. Not as bad as some, but whatever."
Linden: "I met this girl Tiffany, who was in one of the tapes..."
Reddick: "Then I guess the tapes don't necessarily point to our killer..."
Linden: "Yes, we already knew that because there was only one connection out of the seventeen, but thank you for paying attention. In any case, I think she has more to tell. She may even be protecting the filmmaker, just like Mama Dips but probably for even more insane reasons."
Holder: "Can I go with you to talk to her about it?"
Reddick: "Don't! I'm turning this into a random line in the sand!"

C BLOCK
The Talking Man is named Alton Hill, and one thing that he likes to do -- to free his "heart from hatred" and his "mind from worry" and his "thoughts" from being "janky-ass" -- is to name all the fifty states and then focus on the one that brings him the most bliss that day. Like, for example, Detroit.
Seward: "Detroit is not a state!"
Alton: "It is. It is a state of mind. My father took me to see James Brown there, and he could do the splits even when he was four hundred years old."
Seward: "You are wise, Alton."
They come to make him take his antibiotics. I hope I never end up on Death Row in Washington, but if I do it is comforting to know what a premium they put on health care. "Where are my antibiotics?" I would say. "I was promised a wealth of antibiotics."
Alton: "Don't do it. Let this resistance speak for us all."
Becker: "Do take the pill. It represents the primacy of my pettiness."
Seward: "I can't even remember who is winning this round."
You know who isn't, though, is Alton: Becker beats the shit out of him, and continues beating him until finally Seward takes the dang pill already. Speaking of people who will now never be a teen model.
Alton: "I could have taken more, you didn't have to give in. You let them win."
Seward: "They won a long time ago."
Philosophically, Seward I'm beginning to notice, sometimes when you think he's gonna zig, he zags. It's good to keep people guessing. I don't do well with misuse of authority, but I guess this is one way to do it: He maybe took the pill, yes, after all that pageantry, but they will never dig down underneath his dead, creepy nihilism. "You win! Your prize is nothing because I don't exist."
THE STATION
Holder: "Jacob, I'm sorry but it was Joe Mills this whole time."
Jacob: "I figured. At least he'll be on the show finally, instead of just being the side of a face of a man getting a blowjob from a child."
Linden: "So what did you say to Carl when you came with me to bother Tiffany so well?"
Holder: "I just acknowledged his feelings and said that everything that rises must converge and that we can't let personal vendettas and career paranoia get in the way of solving this case both quickly and correctly."
Linden: "I am so sure."
Holder: "No, I probably just said something incomprehensible."
| Season 3 | Episode 4
Linden: "You know that working with me is not going to make you a Sergeant at the end of the month and presumably Season Four of this show."
Holder: "I do know that. On another topic, however, did you notice that now we have seventeen Pied Piper cases, one kiddie-porn case, plus Kallie Leeds, and none of them have to do with Trisha Seward? Or exonerating the swiftly decompensating Ray?"
Linden: "You've seen this show, you know they eventually will."
The computer, I don't know much about computers but I guess it's been thinking about this while they were having their little talk, the computer spits out some not too flattering pictures of Joe Mills, and Holder recognizes him: On the ADA's orders, they cut him loose just about six hours ago. They had him from the raid, and never knew he was their auteur.
BUT WHERE DID HE GO?
His girlfriend's house, Danette's, of course. In case between all the rapes, child prostitution, Stockholm Syndrome, kiddie porn and corrupt probation officers you just weren't feeling yucky enough, add to this now the trailer-parkyness of "my mom's shitty boyfriend" from before Kallie disappeared, and you have: The Killing!
So wait, what is even happening? Joe Mills runs a porn ring that is distributed offsite by Goldie, drives a cab, dates Danette and gets occasional blowjobs from Lyric. Is very generous with his fast food. That day, Kallie sees him prowling around and gets the creeps, and then that night Kallie leaves Beacon, stops by the house, they pretend they're not home, she wanders off but eventually meets back up with him, they make a video, she freaks out on somebody in the parking lot and -- Holder thought -- walks back toward town on foot, which is when the Piper gets her? Is that correct? Is it even worth trying to nail this stuff down yet?
WEEK
The team connects Joe/the Voice back to Danette immediately, but she's no stranger to denial, you know. A girl, maybe Kallie, maybe in a flashback, goes running around all over the place and maybe gets hit by a car? Or maybe that really happens during the episode. Bullet helps the team track Kallie, possibly still alive, to a park where everything is grim and bloody and the sun never shines. And in the wake of this latest twist, the thrilling tale of one man's struggle against taking his antibiotics continues.
