The Killing TV Show - Call Me Jamie - The Killing Photos & Videos, The Killing Reviews & The Killing Recaps | TWoP

By Jacob Clifton

Linden and Holder barely even deal with Reddick this week, although he's around, and there's a bit of drama when Adrian's fosters show up complaining Sarah regressed him with her nonsense and visiting him at school. Of course, this fight leads to a clue -- Adrian never liked sleeping in his bed -- and to another fight, which is Sarah and Skinner rehashing the entire Seward case for the umpteenth time and also the possibility (get this) that maybe Sarah sometimes gets too close to the criminal cases she is investigating. A real barnstormer of a concept, that one.

The clue, however, goes all kinds of great places. First of all, the house is untouched these three years later because of the titular eminent domain: It's on land earmarked for Mayor Richmond's waterfront projects. I almost got tears in my eyes, thinking about how Darren's life must be these days, and wondering if he's doing okay. But it also yields actual forward movement: The closet in which Adrian would have been sleeping that night was his habitual place for doing so, in fact Ray decorated it for him, and it provided line of sight to the murder. So now she has lots of reasons to get to him again.

Ray is no help, but this is the least of Ray's worries today. First thing that happens is, he agrees to stand watch while Alton hangs himself. Once he got his family's forgiveness, it was just the last thing I guess. It's a fairly moving scene, because half the season built up these two guys loving each other, but also: Because it's a rehearsal.

Second thing is, Ray's dad -- who was the one that slipped him the razor, as it turns out, and was if you remember the one that gave him most of his scars -- comes by for a visit at Ray's request. Seems Alton dislodged more than a couple of Ray's immoveable cornerstones. The meeting does not go well because his dad's an incorrigible cockrot.

But in turn, this nightmare meeting gives Ray even more emo power to explode on Linden when she drops by to say in her Linden oblivion Hey, by the way, you didn't kill your wife. Sure hope I can prove it in twelve days! And by the way, can you get me a meeting with your son? His real parents are being total twats about letting me poke around inside his head more.

Angie, the Piper victim they found and kept alive, is now talking. Unfortunately she has no idea who Joe Mills is, which means Reddick and Skinner's obsession with nailing Joe Mills for this serial killing he clearly isn't doing -- and the fact that he is vanished altogether after being discovered with Kallie's phone last week -- turns into screaming at everybody unreasonably. And, you know, moderately reasonably when it comes down to Linden, who is all-time robotic and all-time demanding this week.

Which is partly fueled by her incredibly vicious and capricious meeting with Danette -- who came to her in good faith after finally figuring out that her daughter is actually and for-real in danger, but whom Sarah has not forgiven for reminding her of her own negligent mother. In the end she promises to help, of course, but it still sends Danette into a tailspin that has even Bullet worried, so she spends the day with the old nutsack and eventually comes home to a needy Lyric, who rewards her with a kiss and/or lezzing out. (Don't do it, Bullet! Those girls will ruin you!)

From what Angie says it's pretty clear that Pastor Mike is involved -- lots of talk of confession, salvation, and mystic vision for starters -- but it takes Team Linden an incredible amount of time (and gangsta philosophy, including a short digression on Copernicus v. Galileo) to figure that out. So as the episode is ending, and they're there looking for a suddenly vanished Angie, Holder finally puts together that possibly the Pastor isn't quite on the up-and-up.

Week: Bullet reaps the whirlwind probably, Danette continues to be helpful in no way, Ray is swiftly falling apart, hopefully we find out what Joe Mills has been up to, and it looks like they raid Beacon Home.

PREVIOUSLY

The Pied Piper victim we chased all over town was half-dead when we found her, but either way she's not Kallie, and Bullet's starting to lose faith. Linden's still trying to exonerate Seward for the murders, which isn't going great, although he's going through some pretty tough stuff on Death Row that could turn out beneficial... spiritually at least. Pastor Mike continues to be sketchy as hell. Kallie's mom Danette has figured out that Joe Mills was the last person to see her daughter -- a pornographer and client of child prostitutes, and all kinds of other things that were pretty obvious to everybody but her until the last possible second -- while Team Linden has started to piece together his rather baroque MO, which still seems like a separate sexual debacle, sure, but could also lead them to Kallie, who is at least still alive. (Plus it would make Bullet happy, so it's actually important on multiple levels.)

PD

Due to being a total crackhead, it is difficult for Danette Leeds to immediately garner the respect necessary for the desk cop to give her his full attention. Especially when she speaks in traumatized, crazy half-sentences that we only understand because we were there: "He's got my daughter's cellphone and he's taken her somewhere Joe Mills, Joe Mills, you guys are looking for him I got a card, okay I got a card, the Detective she gave me a card and she told me to call her if I had anything..."

Desk: "Ma'am! Stop for a second, Jesus. Are you drunk or high or something?"
Danette: "Why, what do you take me for! I am just a ratchet looking person babbling in the middle of the night trying to show you scraps of paper. Call Sarah Linden."
Desk: "Ohhhhhh. Gotcha. One of those. Look, I'm trying to be nice? But my bullshit needs have already been met tonight. So you are gonna need to sit down, as instructed."
Danette: "Good one-liner! But I am too crazy for wordplay. I think instead of sitting down I am going to scream Sarah Linden over and over until you arrest me."
Desk: "Done. Dunzo. You got it."

ANGIE

Is the name of the veterinarian victim, the one with no finger. She is awake and talking. It is a study in the differences of law enforcement philosophy between our two leads.

Angie: "So he said, Get in back. The old Twitcheroo. And but then he didn't come back there, he just made me sit on plastic -- which I didn't notice immediately at the time, but probably should have -- and then started talking about how he was going to save me."
Holder: "That's a strange thing to say -- that raises no red flags for myself or my partner. Do go on, beautiful. You are doing great."
Angie: "He said I would be saved. That I would finally see. That was when I noticed the plastic, and he came back in there with me and that's when shit really hit the fan."

She flips out and starts hyperventilating, so Holder goes into his Ho Whisperer mode and talks her down with his quiet strength and whispering voice and exhortations to just breathe and be got, because he got you... so of course Sarah Linden immediately steps in to "help," brandishing a snap sheet of all the heretofores with Joe Mills smack in the middle, and starts barking orders.

Linden: "Recognize one of these men. Do it now without further delay."
Angie: "I already told you I..."
Linden: "Are you retarded. It took at least six minutes to drive to the Park."
Angie: "It was rainy and dark and I was in the back on this plastic."
Linden: "Then look at the faces of the men until you remember. Stop crying."
Angie: "They don't seem to be the man. I don't recognize Joe Mills, for example."
Linden: "Review your statement and reconsider it."
Angie: "It's the eyes, they stared at me in the rearview like I wasn't even real. You don't forget that shit."
Linden: "Apparently you do sometimes, useless victim."

The orderlies at this point come to ask Linden -- and by extension Holder -- to get the fuck out and stop emotionally abusing the serial-killer victim, and Linden seems fairly mystified why they are being so uncool. Holder does some last-minute sexy Backstreet Boys love vibes on the girl so she can sleep -- assuring her that even without a finger to put a ring on, eventually somebody will like her and want to put a ring somewhere in its vicinity -- and then follows Sarah out into the hallway to bitch at her for acting crazy.

OUTSIDE

Holder: "If you were a guy I would slap you upside the head right now. Do you realize if you keep pushing it's going to make anything she says inadmissible?"
Linden: "I had not thought of that. Go get a sketch artist. We'll pull it out of her stupid brain through art."
Holder: "Or it's not Mills and this whole thing is dumb."
Linden: "I think she was lying. A lying little idiot. These people do not trust cops."

Holder: "Why on earth would she? You're acting like a Dalek right now."

"Skinner's got every badge out gunning for Mills. Everybody thinks he's good for it. Except for the girl who actually saw the killer. That doesn't bother you?"

Linden: "When you put it that way, I do seem crazy and backwards today."
Holder: "If Joe Mills is the Pied Piper and the Pied Piper decapped Trisha Seward three years ago, we would need a connection between Mills and Seward. You're doing the same thing people always do on this show that you hate, trying to solve the crime before you solve it just so it will be solved."

Reddick: "I'm here to be awful!"
Linden: "Your one area of competence. Pardon me while I take this call about a screaming pigeonhead back at the station."

Reddick: "Why are you back to looking homeless?"
Holder: "My transformation has begun. Have you talked to the vet tech?"

It is a very interesting system that they have at this dead drop: They bring the body in, cash goes on the counter, they ring the bell and leave and that is when the guy comes out. That is fascinating. Not at all helpful. (Except if that needed explaining, than the one who did it already knew how it worked, right? Like this is not info everybody just knows, or a location that you would necessarily know. Even Linden only found it by following the trail of her crazy plus a finger.)

Reddick: "Still looking for the Mills cab, which is causing all kinds of chaos all over town. [Several puns about the girl's finger, only the last of which lands for Holder. Rewarded with a guilty laugh.]"
Linden: "Danette Leeds got herself arrested, possibly on purpose."
Reddick: "So?"
Linden: "You are not invited to this or any conversation. Holder, keep talking to Angie and maybe get that sketch."
Holder: "Can I come with you? This is about Kallie, which makes it about Bullet."
Linden: "No, you can stay here and play dick or balls with your bestie."
Reddick: "Oh, I seem to have accomplished exactly what I wanted to. Well done, Carl."

Holder feels stuck between mommy and daddy again, and cutely bums a smoke off a wild-looking old person in a wheelchair -- "Yo, vintage playa!" -- rather than engage further with Reddick, who is well too pleased with himself and tries in vain for the conversion point of getting him coffee as well. Holder's not having it. Holder is thinking about how he is dressed like a homeless and didn't even know it, and that is a sign of It coming for him.

DANETTE

Linden: "Danette Leeds, you piece of human refuse. We have not found Joe Mills."
Danette: "I came straight here to tell you where he was, but that was a while ago now."
Linden: "Yes, he's not there anymore. But we are going to find him, and possibly Kallie as well."
Danette: "She's with him! Don't say 'possibly'!"
Linden: "Stop shouting. I am here to torture you emotionally for holding out on me before."
Danette: "Oh, is that what we're doing?"
Linden: "You lied, and now you have almost died and you are arrested. So yes, that is what we are doing. And we are going to sit here, with me not doing police work of any kind, until you go insane."
Danette: "...Done."

Danette: "It was always just me and her. You have no idea what it's like to have a kid and be alone and have everything riding on you."
Linden: "Fuck you."

"When she was small, she fit right in the bend of my body. I would take her to the river and she would be so afraid, but we would wade together. She didn't like the sound of water, so I would cover her ears. And then one day, without a word, she walked to the edge and she walked into the water. She was grown enough. But she always came back. She always comes back. She runs off all the time and then comes back."

Linden: "And blows dudes and makes pornos while she is gone. Very touching story."
Danette: "She wouldn't fuck off without her cell phone. She's out there, and Joe's got her. You find her. Find my little girl. Please. Please."
Linden: "Fine. I will find your daughter. But only because I secretly like Bullet. It is not because you told a story. I did not find your story moving or relevant to my own life at all."

C BLOCK

Ray wakes up, luxuriously irritated in a way only Sarsgaard can properly illustrate, to the sound of Alton ripping up his sheets. Henderson's running late again, so they've missed the last three half-hour cell checks; something in Alton's voice gets Ray up on his feet.

Ray: "Alton. You need to think clearly right now."
Alton: "Thinking is all we do. My family was just the last thing I had to think about."
Ray: "Come out into the light where I can look at you."
Alton: "Tonight I woke up and I didn't know where I was. For the first time in all three years, I had no idea. That's as good a time as any."

Ray stares at him for a while, wondering which is more respectful. Which response takes into account their relationship -- the man and his life -- and which is just about feeling better. It's not just the last things you think about it, it's the last choice he'll ever get to make. Ray wants a hanging, too, for the same reason: The dignity of a choice. So he nods.

Alton: "They'll only come if you call them, Ray."

But he doesn't. He just says Alton's name, softly, once. He doesn't speak again until the noose is around Alton's neck and he's dropping to his knees so bravely.

"There. That's the hard part. You did good. Hard part's over. Now just... let it go, kid. Nothing worth holding onto."

Alton's dead by the time he stops talking. But then, he wasn't really talking to Alton.

Becker's off running errands when Henderson finally shows up and takes the 6 AM wakeup. He notices Ray, awake and standing when he sees him, and follows the line of Ray Seward's gaze. He's called it in and started the lockdown before he realizes Ray knew -- there is no compassion in his stare, only fear. It seems rude to Ray, who feels awkward about it. Realizes how this must look, to somebody like Henderson: Like some kind of mastermind in the dead of night, talking Alton to death. For some reason he doesn't like the power this gives him.

PD

The options, given the lack of hits on both his cab and his credit cards, are as follows: Joe Mills is gone to ground, he himself is dead or possibly something supernatural is going on. Nobody points out that Mama Dips has secret walls and rooms in her motel or that she is obsessed with hiding her son even when he's not on the lam, but who knows. Bigger problems, like Adrian's pissed off foster parents demanding a meeting with Linden and Skinner.

Between the foster dad's disinterest in the seedier parts of Adrian's past, the fact that Ray Seward freaked Tess out about their son and now learning that Linden has been harassing the kid in civilian life, they kind of have a point.

Skinner: "Detective Linden was wrong talking to the boy without your permission..."
Tess: "At his school! Oh my God!"
Linden: "The boy was of no aid at that time. I should not in retrospect have put him in that situation."
Tess: "He's sleeping in the closet again, bitch. Do you know how long it took to make him cut that shit out? And now you're promising him a visit to his dad?"

Linden: "I am sorry and I will not upset Adrian again, but that was interesting what you just said so I have to leave now."
Everybody: Jaws dropped. Except for Skinner and also anybody who knows her at all.

LINDEN'S CAR SLASH FILING CABINET

Linden: "Social Worker said he did that even back when he lived with his mother..."
Holder: "Why are we going through random paper in your... shit, you have the entire Seward file in your car? Do you realize you are back to being a police person now?"
Linden: "I will never be so fully a person -- much less a police officer -- that I do not keep integral evidence in my car."
Holder: "Okay so if we're no longer assuming that Adrian was in bed that night -- and yeah, his bed was made that day -- then he was in the closet. Except his room doesn't have a closet."
Linden: "Here though, look at a secret thing on this photograph the audience can't see."
Holder: "My goodness."

BREAKING IN

Linden: "Excuse me while I commit a Class A felony using your knife."
Holder: "Do you have time for a painful metaphor, executed in mortifying gangsta talk? Great. So all of these girls, they're either not seeing or they're not saying what they saw, but maybe it's not about that. Maybe it's about what he sees, how he chooses. Like how Copernicus thought the Earth was the center of the geocentric universe and then Galileo tried to explain how selfish that was..."
Linden: "Am I smiling? My face feels weird."
Holder: "It looks weird! You can't stroke out on me now, Linden, hirebacks aren't on the health plan."

Adorable. Belabored, for the simple point he was making, but very effective for the how and why this would be cute to Linden, and she'd let him see her smiling about it.

Even more adorable is the show's explanation for why this house hasn't been touched or lived in since the prostitute that lived her had her head and fingers cut off by her husband: The eponymous eminent domain, as it's slated for... Mayor Richmond's waterfront projects! Oh, Darren. I'm sure you're getting something done, even if it isn't this. How I do miss you. You and your ways. Your belief in legless grandpas and also America. That sexy way you had of seeming to have murdered a girl, but then after two years it turned out that really you were just a little sad.

(LOL. But seriously how weird would it be if he randomly turned up? And would that be okay? I think if he was just on TV or something that would be fine with everybody, but I don't know if we as a group would agree that Mayor Richmond just wandering back onto the show would be acceptable. I could accept it because I love this show and whatever it wants is fine, but also because it's Poor Bitch of the Universe, Darren Richmond, the little darling with the wonderful hair. I wonder if he can walk. If he could, I would ask for the first dance. It would be to "Clocks" by Coldplay, because that song* portrays through music how I feel about him. On the other hand, bringing him back means bringing back Chief Nicole of the Dickhole Tribe and I am not prepared for that. On that, I would call hijinks. She was too much! What a piece of work she was!)

*(Or no: "I just met you / And this is crazy! / But here's my number / Just call me Jamie.")

Linden: "This photograph is where we found Trisha Seward's body. That closet represents where I found Adrian. This is my design."
Holder: "Why are you hiding in the closet, Linden? What are you doing."
Linden: "There's stars up here, on the ceiling. Due to him sleeping here. This is his design. Of glow in the dark stars. Special ones that still work three years later."

She lays down on the floor, of course, and tells Holder to walk in and pretend to kill a lady.

Linden: "Holder, I can see you. Therefore, we need to bother the shit out of this kid."

PD

Linden: "Don't you see? We can solve this crime we already solved!"
Skinner: "Adrian didn't tell us that before, after six hours or so..."
Linden: "He's drawing the trees again and these buildings..."
Skinner: "Is this from the horse's mouth? From when you accosted him at school?"
Linden: "No this is straight from my crazy head."

Skinner: "Holder, don't play shady Linden games or your weird meth stuff, and go find Joe Mills instead. I am going to be reaming the hell out of Sarah Linden while you do that."
Linden, shouting!: "I am not asking you permission to go talk to Ray Seward, I am asking you to be accountable for this with me! We are killing an innocent man because you don't want to feel weird!"
Skinner: "I have already indulged this for no reason other than I am cool. But you've got no connection to the Pied Piper here..."

Linden: "And yet look at all the connections we have! The wounds, the weapon, the fingers, the whole thing."

"This job is not for human beings. If you do it right, it eats your life. You have to step back and ask yourself, Am I too close? Because I am looking at the beast that ate my life. She's looking right back at me right now."

Linden, unconvincingly indeed: "I am not crazy. Or in the way that you're talking about. I can get a doctor's note if you want..."
Skinner: "Please stop acting like this happened to you alone. Whatever price you paid, I'm still paying it. You are a good cop and you have good instincts, but that is still this side of the line from obsession."
Linden: "I'm following evidence. I'm following evidence! The killer is active now because it's the same killer because Jimmy, it's the same case!"
Skinner: "I can't do it and you're too close to my area right now. We are past saving, but Kallie Leeds isn't. Get on Joe Mills."

C BLOCK

Ray: "So where was Becker last night? Or today? Under investigation or..."
Henderson: "I don't get it. He loved you. Alton was your friend, why didn't you call us? Or help him in some way?"
Ray: "That's exactly what I did."

BULLET!

Twitch: "I am a dirtbag!"
Lyric: "I am a doormat!"
Danette: "I make them both look like stellar people! Can we talk?"
Bullet: "I am too busy staring at what my life's become, sorry."
Danette: "Trigger? Or I mean, sorry. Bullet. Have you seen Kallie? She's missing."
Bullet: "No shit."
Danette: "Can you ask her to come home please?"
Bullet: "Sure, whatever."
Danette: "Can you tell me places she might be?"
Bullet: "Drive around with your hateful ass? Sounds like a ball, sure."

C BLOCK

Ray's dad is also wearing orange and as it turns out he was the one that passed Ray the razor, in the hopes that he would stab Becker to death with it. So far that vote is unanimous.

Dad: "I didn't think you'd want to see me."
Ray: "I didn't. But something happened that changed my mind, no homo. You look really... old."
Dad: "You were very tiny when you were born. They kept you in that incubator and your mom cried all night and I just kept thinking, if they would just let me in there with a baseball bat, I could beat the fag out of you and you would begin to develop normally."

Ray: "Cool story."

Ray: "But did you know that after you left, we went hungry?"
Dad: "Oh, now we're bitching about dads? This is Easy Rider all of a sudden? I taught you stuff."
Ray: "Like how to drink and steal and leave?"
Dad: "Exactly. How to be a man."
Ray: "This was a very poor idea on my part. Goodbye."
Dad: "I just want you to know that I am proud of you, for doing your time with your mouth shut, and for going out like a man."
Ray: "Yeah, well. Dying in a jumpsuit doesn't make you a man."
Dad: "Then I'm out of ideas."

KALLIE'S BRIDGE

Bullet: "She liked to look down at the water. It looks clean."
Danette: "Did you know I used to bring her here as a kid?"
Bullet: "Yeah. She said you always tried to teach her hide and seek..."
Danette: "...Never got it. I'd open my eyes and there she'd be. Standing right in front of me."
Bullet: "She'll be okay."

Only Bullet could give this bitch her entire day and end up comforting her, instead of the other way around. The girl who draws faith on her arms every day; where does it come from?

C BLOCK

Ray: "Oh hey, Linden. What."
Linden: "Joe Mills."
Ray: "You want me to finger him or something, I guess. What's in it for me?"
Linden: "Obviously nothing."
Ray: "Then fuck off."
Linden: "Take two. Your son saw the killer. He was sleeping in the closet across from the front door. He did that a lot; his mom put up stars..."
Ray: "I did that. He didn't like his bedroom. He didn't like sleeping there."

Linden smiles, just enough.

Ray: "How would I know why? I barely knew the kid..."
Linden: "You didn't kill your wife. Look, help me talk to Adrian. Please. I need to know what he saw..."
Ray: "You are a lunatic. Selfish? And three years after the fact you're pulling this shit? I'm going to be hanged by the neck in twelve days. Fuck you. Jesus Christ, bitch. Don't come back here again."

She feels bad -- actually bad -- for him. A new look on her. Sarsgaard will break your heart, though. I can't even think about Boys Don't Cry without feeling just awful for that guy, and he is the WORST GUY. Not even a gray area villain, just actually the worst thing that happens in the entire movie. But Sarsgaard, he can scream in your face and still it is so sad. What a world to be in, where Sarsgaard is unhappy. Sarah feels similar, I think. That it goes in her from being about the Truth to being about this scary, hard, effeminate, terrifying, heartless heartbroken reptile: About saving him, even though he is the least savable person she's ever met.

LYRIC

Lyric: "I wonder why I let Twitch hurt me all the time."
Bullet: "Yes, it is a very interesting dynamic you two assholes have."
Lyric: "Come keep me warm in this bed. I would like to spread the pain all around to everybody."
Bullet: "Yes, misery is definitely on the menu today. Scooch over."
Lyric: "Why are you even more Bullety than usual?"
Bullet: "Don't worry about it."
Lyric: "I know you, B."
Bullet: "I saw Kallie's mom."
Lyric: "Do you think she's coming back? Look at me. You don't have to be tough right now. You think I don't see you, but I do."

Lyric leans in for a kiss and Bullet's day gets a shit-ton more complicated. Is she even allowed to be happy about this? No, but not for the reasons she thinks. Kallie is dead or not dead, either way you get to kiss your dream girl when the situation presents itself. Guilt shouldn't enter the picture, especially when everybody is a mess like they are today. But as the mentally healthiest and strongest person in the entire homeless population, maybe you should think about the ten miles of bad road she's about to drag you down without even meaning to. Let your sense of self-preservation be your guide, if your pride's not doing the job.

PD

Holder does this whole intuitive thing where he stares into space and intones all the stuff they've been talking about, about how it's a confessional and the mirror is his way of catching them and that he needs to look into their eyes and all that, but it comes off as a little cheap because Pastor Mike has been too red herring this whole time to ignore, and also because we already did this back at the Seward house. But still, it's nice to see Linden cede the floor and let Holder talk it out: Let him mediate between the Linden and the Reddick inside himself and have that conversation out loud, without anybody butting in.

So of course it's Reddick that busts in, Skinner screaming out in the hallway: Angie Gower has vanished, apparently, on the way to radiology. Their one witness, before she could even get started. You can see why everybody's upset. At least they're not all yelling at each other about Joe Mills, for a second.

Linden: "Well, maybe we should Beacon Home? She went there before..."

BEACON

To be honest, I hate Pastor Mike and I want him to go to jail for being the Pied Piper. And it is for my own dumb reasons that have nothing to do with this show, but might well end up being part of why he is played by the actor who is playing him.

Linden: "Can you please tell Pastor Mike we're here for him and it's urgent?"
Holder: "Hey, look at these pictures of all those girls and how we've pretty much been talking about him this entire time without knowing it."

Danette locks her motel room, thinking private thoughts and then unlocks it again just in case. Ray Seward looks across the corridor, imagining Alton was still there. And when Pastor Mike finally meets with them, Team Linden turns quite the eye on him. The music says he is the killer of the Killings, which is a bummer, because we're only 60% through the season, so I guess he is not.

WEEK

Is all about Pastor Mike, presumably. Danette gets a strange message, Joe Mills is still in the wind and Ray Seward is rapidly unraveling.
