That old Chief Nicole, here's what she did: Knock Sarah out and then send her to the psych ward under a 72-hour hold, claiming she was attacked in the middle of Sarah's suicide attempt on the tenth floor. Quite a clever plan! And Sarah's no help either, acting generally paranoid and crazy about this whole "conspiracy" that is covering up the Killing and involves most of the other characters, and eventually gets her ass sedated real good.
Holder, horrified by her dopey fate and running out of time before the season finale, eventually gets Carlson to help him track down her psychiatrist... Who is Rick Felder, aka the most frustrated fiancé in all of Sonoma. So add that to the list of people on this show that are risibly unprofessional, which list now includes everybody that has ever been on this show.
Holder gets her out of there, shares a weird bro-moment where Felder officially pawns her off on him forever, and they ride off to find that key-card proving the Mayor was meeting with Ames and Chief Nicole the night Rosie was killed. Oh, he also does a mite of detection, learning that one of Janek's mobster thugs was arrested at the waterfront property burying "Indian bones" that night, as one does, and Ames got him off the hook.
In case you were wondering when "stolen Indian bones" were going to become a factor in this mystery, yes, that time is now.
Anyway, we also learn that Sarah herself was abandoned by her own crazy mother, although in this case she was only left in the house alone overnight. But it seems to have been a fairly harrowing night, considering the hurricane of emotion even talking about it tangentially brings up. So there goes that, thanks to Holder, but at least it's on the table now. And luckily, it's the kind of table owned by people that live in houses, like Holder, rather than the Sarah Linden type of interior decorating, which is more suitcase-oriented, or sometimes just a car. Wherever she finds herself, generally, there is no room for a table, much less a habanero omelet. I hope she lives with him forever.
In other news, Stan Larsen is continuing his Redemption Tour by stalking and secretly performing household maintenance chores for Bennett Ahmed, whose life he ruined last year and who does not seem very grateful or forgiving nowadays. Seems Terry's moved back into the house, which is probably a good thing, and he leaves a message on Rosie voicemail apologizing for not always being there or telling her that she was his daughter by choice rather than blood. Stan seems to be gearing up for something real crazy, don't you get that feeling?
Gwen successfully organizes an astroturf viral video about Darren Richmond playing basketball with the black youths of today, and yes it's offensive, but not as offensive as the sudden clarification/retcon that Mayor Adams didn't rape her so much as kiss her one time in her kitchen. Maybe she's lying so Darren won't be creeped out, but I don't know. It seems like the kind of move this show would pull, playing out a month-long storyline about this horrible sex-molestation ring that suddenly is like, "He kissed me this one time! It was so creepy!" (C.V. "Your teenager is a prostitu... I mean, hotel maid" or "Darren Richmond killed Rosie Lars... Wait, nope. See you year!")
We do learn, through Sarah's adverse reaction to enforced therapy from one of the weirdest therapists of all time, a few things about the most interesting mystery on the whole show -- namely, Why Is Sarah Like This All The Goddamn Time? -- but they connect up in kinda odd ways. Her case, the one that sent her mad last time, involved a dead hooker whose son Adrian was found still in the house after a week. They nailed the dad for it, which arrest and conviction Sarah never fully bought into, and so a big part of her Rosie obsession has to do with her guilt for going along with essentially the burial of that murder.
But I mean Surprise! Linden "solved" a murder case and then it turned out the whole thing was just a runaround blowjob that wasted everybody's time. Isn't that so weird how that happened one time?
Week: Carlson maybe joins our side and works as a double agent against the Mayor; Sarah is still on the run and still pretending to be a police officer; that key-card is getting plastered over as we speak; probably Sarah will punch Chief Nicole in the box and/or run into some Holder's House shower hijinks, if there's any justice in this world. Three more episodes until the season finale, or -- in even more breathlessly thrilling terms -- the Mayoral election!
I kid. I love this show, and this episode was freaking amazing. You think Linden's this time bomb and Enos is playing her one way, and then something comes along like this -- an hour of watching what an actually crazy Sarah Linden looks like -- and you realize she's been working you on a whole other level this entire time. As have most of the actors, we seem to learn at one point or another.
PREVIOUSLY
Sarah Linden finally got her wish, abducted by shadowy people and involved in the very drama she's been obsessing on for like a million years. Holder found himself the opposite of a savage human sacrifice as he listened to her shit fall apart. Lt. Carlson is still the hottest procedural obstruction on Earth, Gil is still a piece, Darren Richmond and Gwen have 99 problems they barely know about, and Chief Nicole -- surprise! -- hates absolutely everybody in the world.
LACUNA-AY
Linden is in some kind of cage. Not the usual cage she's in, that of being a feral animal in the shape of a lady, but an actual cage. Bed, bathroom... She walks down a future-science hallway like it's a dream sequence of everything white, and then hustles toward a door...
Oh, girlfriend is in the ACUTE PSYCHIATRY WARD. Well. Took twenty-three episodes, which is twenty-two less than it should have, but you know how this show is.
Linden: "...Yep."
Can't blame a girl for trying, but yeah.
OUTSIDE
Holder: "Why on earth is my crazy-person friend in crazy-person jail?"
Nurse: "The reason for that is, she is crazy."
Holder: "Oh, that makes sense."
Lt. Carlson, suddenly appearing: "Why would this be a problem?"
Holder: "Because it's those darn Indians! The ones that less that thirty-six hours ago crucified me?"
Carlson: "I'm sorry about that, but I can't see the connection. She is a crazy person. She tried to kill herself."
Holder: "I get why you're saying that, and I get that you are going on what you've heard, but something you may not have noticed in the last nine episodes is there's this huge conspiracy? Using you as their patsy? So maybe the fact that you fired her earlier today, and then boxed up all our shit, and then all of that same shit about a murder that happened less than a month ago disappeared..."
Carlson: "I don't have time for this. And also, as anybody would know but this episode needs to tell you eleven times, the only person that can get her out is her psychiatrist."
Holder: "Okay, just think about who your friends are. Because guess what, that group does not include me or Sarah Linden."
Carlson: "Because who I really need to ally myself with, as the new lieutenant of the Dead Girl Closed-Case and Murder Department, is meth-addicts and crazy people that don't even work here."
INSIDE
Linden: "I know how this works. Can I call somebody?"
Nurse: "I can place a call to a family member."
Linden: "I do not have any of those. Just Stephen Holder."
Nurse: "Hey, say something super fucking crazy right now."
Linden: "I have very important information about a murder case! You are impeding justice! There is a conspiracy on all levels of government and law enforcement!"
Nurse: "Okay, I'll write down your information for the President or the FBI or whatever and I'll make sure they get that information. About your very important conspiracy."
Linden: "How can you even hold me here."
Nurse: "You're on 72-hour suicide watch, is how."
Linden: "Motherfuck. That is exactly how long this season has left."
Because what would make this show even more maddening is if the main character went from being technically blocked from doing anything to literally blocked from doing anything.
"Hey, this show is moving too fast! It took me by surprise how in the last episode, things actually happened for once. Maybe you could slow it down by keeping the lead character in a psych ward for the remainder of the season and focused more on Darren Richmond pissing himself in a wheelchair. I mean, I think we can all agree that's where the majority of viewer interest* lies."
*(The opinions of the recapper are not necessarily reflected in this joke, he just thought it was funny to say. Frankly, I'm a little turned off when "interesting" things happen on this show. That is not what I am here for! I'm here to understand what grief is like for people who experience human emotion in a normal way, in case I am ever called upon to demonstrate sympathy for their troubles and don't want to Linden it all up.)
Nurse: "When was the last time you ate or slept or cared for yourself or lived in a house or nurtured your child or talked about normal shit or acted normal or didn't freak everybody out all the time?"
Linden: "All right, all right. Point taken."
LARSEN/MAREK
Stan: "I just feel really bad, for punching my child in the face."
Terry: "Don't 'beat yourself up' over it. You're still a gay bear sex god."
Stan: "I just wish I understood why Tommy's acting up! I mean, his sister was brutally and infamously murdered, and then I got like ten people killed for no reason, and then his horrible mother disappeared, and then a prostitute -- no disrespect -- moved in and then out again, and I punched him in the face even though he's a little kid. I mean, I'm just mystified."
Terry: "Well, speaking as the only well-adjusted sex worker in the entire world, that we all pretend is real but is really just a hypothetical feminist unicorn we want to exist and one day maybe will, maybe I can just tell you what the problem is."
Stan: "I would like that."

Terry: "Okay, well, you and your wife are both obsessed with your daughter's murder. But ask yourself whether or not anything will change when it is solved. Nothing. She's still dead, and that still sucks."
Stan: "True."
Terry: "And then ask yourself what happens if her murder ever gets solved? What changes? Nothing."
Stan: "I still feel like it's a movie about me and how sad I am."
Terry: "That's what grief is like. That's the definition of grief. But then you've got your two little boys who are just waiting for their parents to pull it together, in the wake of tragedy, and treat them right. Not that you're wrong for dealing with things in this way, but shouldn't the both of you at least admit that you're doing what you're doing?"
Stan: "I haven't really had time to think about that."
Terry: "Well, eventually the rest of the world -- beyond this horrible occurrence -- is going to need what you have to offer. You are a hugely important part of existence, just by existing, and when you ignore that you're actually doing the world just as much of a disservice as you do yourself. Isn't this entire show just incredibly selfish? Isn't obsession by its very definition incredibly selfish?"
Stan: "If it were that easy to understand what you're saying, people wouldn't have pretended The Tree Of Life was this incomprehensible mess, or bitched that this show was a bait-and-switch, instead of understanding they're both fairly straightforward explorations of grief. We're just too tied up in the majesty of our own pain to realize that the rest of the world keeps turning."
Terry: "That's the human lot. Don't sweat it. What you're feeling is totally normal, it's just not that productive. Especially in the psycho violent way you express it. Or the horrifically static way your wife and Sarah Linden do. Or for two entire seasons of television."
Stan: "Mostly I just feel like being the father of a tragedy gives me something to be upset about, and vice versa. But then, I guess they teach existentialism in whore school."
Terry: "No, I'm just not incredibly childish and I don't consider victimhood a badge of honor -- and I don't have kids, so my identity isn't grotesquely tied up in my kids or their misfortunes -- so it's easier to see what you're fucking up here. Grief is a part of the process, not the prize at the end. Want a hug? You can have a hug, free of charge."
Stan: "I do have a crystal goblet I was saving for a special occasion."
Terry: "Save the goblet, and just work on becoming a person again. It is literally your only job on this planet."

DAY TWENTY-THREE
Stan stalks Clitorectomy Teacher Guy, watches his wife leave for wherever. Guess what, it's super rainy today.
THE DOCKS
Holder: "Hi, are you Regi?"
Regi: "Yeah. Am I your social worker? You look like somebody who should probably have a social worker."
Holder: "No, I'm kind of Sarah Linden's social worker right now. Did you know there's a crazy conspiracy and she uncovered Mayoral evidence of murder?"
Regi: "I have no doubt that she has brought you into her spiral of madness, so no, but also kinda yeah."
Holder: "No, this time it's real! Use your social worker powers and get her out!"
Regi: "As Carlson told you, only her psychiatrist can do that."
Holder: "Fine, that's Plan B! Who is her psychiatrist, what's her* name?"
Regi: "Uh, trust me when I say that's not something I am going to tell you. Also not something Sarah would be happy about. If you're starting a pissing contest about who loves her more, I will win. Even against you. But also, let me give you a history lesson about how this is exactly how it went down last time. Stopped eating, stopped sleeping... Oh, shit. Where's Jack?"
*(Stephen Holder, Feminist.)
Holder: "With Helo, in Chicago."
Regi: "In some ways, that's a healthy move. In other ways, it just proves my point. If she's even willing to drop Jack -- her number-one sign of being a healthy working human adult person, however detrimental to him that is in practice -- she's going down the rabbit hole."
Holder: "But not if she's right!"
Regi: "I see what you're saying, but there's no reason for me to think there's something different about this time, when she's doing the same shit in the same order with the same crazy dignified look on her face. She'll keep shaving off pieces until there's nothing left, and you know exactly what I'm talking about."
Holder: "I do. And I realize that there's no way for me to tell you how this time is different. Which is why 'The Yellow Wallpaper' is the scariest story of all time, because screaming I'm not crazy is just another way to prove you're crazy, which is the privilege gun pointed at the head of every woman every day of the year, which is what makes it the scariest concept in modernity.

THE ANTIGONE THING
**Actually, there's like two pages there that are totally about Linden, looking back. I try not to quote myself too often, because I'm only mostly a douchebag, but:
"It's where civics and sociology intersect with the person's actual, subjective, personal experience... Where Antigone tells the lawmen to fuck off, because she loved her brother and the Gods more than whatever crack Creon's smoking. It's the part where Cassandra refuses to sit down and shut up, knowing full well she's flying blind and all alone. But she's an ace. When your dæmon tells you things that can't possibly be true, your option is to follow it -- search, unbending... wait for the day [when the math] finally comes true -- or lay down before the world outside, and take the road more usually traveled, and give up your angel to fear."
Or the kindest, most accurate thing you could probably ever say about Sarah Linden:
"...The most interesting part of the Hero's Quest is the end... [T]he Hero comes back to town with magic powers, [knowing the Language of Birds], in contact with divinity, and everybody looks at him crazy. And the reason everybody looks at him crazy is because, by all standard measure and by all the things that make us a society and not a monstrosity: He is. He can't tie his shoes, he can't walk straight, can't balance his checkbook; he can't summon the right words to speak, because he's learned a better language. He is insane."
If Sarah Linden were a man, I promise you words like crazy and CPS wouldn't even be a part of this story. He'd be dedicated, and righteous, and strong. He'd have conviction. Which makes the woman Sarah Linden, to my mind, even more of a hero -- a capital-h Hero, Orpheus descent into the Underworld, the whole bit -- and this show, in turn, a hundred times better than it needs to be.
It's my favorite story, probably, that can be told. It's the reason I love and write about the shows I love and write about, because it's always about knowing the truth in a world that says just knowing the dangerous truth is enough to condemn you, that the world and society save their own stasis by eliminating the ones who see behind the curtain. Starbuck, Sarah Linden, even Alicia Florrick make easy sense in this context. What I've never been able to do is convince anybody that Serena van der Woodsen, or the Pretty Little Liars -- despite being automatically pointless and shallow and stupid by virtue of being young women, of course -- are doing the exact same thing. Telling the exact same Yellow Wallpaper story, because it's real, and the conversation about how it's not real is a huge part of why it's real.
(Why no men in that list? First of all, boo-hoo. Second of all, there's no story there, because men aren't categorically silenced, which is why the categories of men that are -- gay men and men of color -- are generally writing about this and only this, which can be its own problem but certainly isn't something a TV network is going to bother with. Third, you have Jimmy McNulty -- or Jesus, for Christ's sake -- if you want to see how well that goes for men. Usually it ends up with John Locke in a pile of loveable crap like Lost or, Lord help us, those absolute a-holes from The River. But listen, if the CW ever buys a pilot about Jesus Christ, or Odin, or Mithras, or Harvey Milk, let's meet back here and chat about it.)
Reading stories about the Descent and Return, the Harrowing of Hell, has been one of humanity's great joys for thousands and thousands of years. This show is about what that looks like now. And we bitch that it's depressing, or staid, or she's not a good cop?
Sarah Linden isn't a cop, she's a fucking demigod. It's supposed to be a drag.
ON THE WATERFRONT
Just off the docks, Holder notices a waterfront billboard for those Mayor-sponsored projects we can't wait to hear more and more and more about, with the PM listed as -- again, of course -- Michael Ames. He calls Ray at the station about this construction company, the Columbia Domain Fund, and Ray begrudgingly tells him that there's been one arrest related to the site... And it was October Fifth. A date you may remember if you've ever seen this show about a certain Killing on that date.
BENNETT AHMED
Walks up to his house, with his wife -- that darling little lesbian from Growing Pains last seen in The Avengers -- to find Stan lurking.
Ahmed: "What is that you are doing here? Last time I saw you, you and your houseboy/murder accomplice were breaking all of my bones."
Stan: "I just wanted to say I'm sorry for getting you investigated and arrested and then breaking all of your bones."
Ahmed: "So you're what, making amends?"
Stan: "This hooker told me to."
Ahmed: "Leave! I'm very angry! If I weren't wearing a neckbrace from your beating I would be so expressive right now, but my voice will just have to convey it!"

LOCKUP
Linden: "This is my smiling face. It is no problem."
Doctor: "I am very official and would like to deal with you as effici..."
Linden: "This is all a regrettable error."
Doctor: "Whatever crazy you're about to spout -- and I'm sure it's fascinating and totally valid -- we're gonna do this my way. Can I call you Sarah?"
Linden: "I have to do police things now."
Doctor: "Well, you're not a policewoman, so you don't really. Listen, after you fled CPS with your son a few days ago, where did you live?"
Linden: "I am still smiling. I stayed with a friend."
Doctor: "The woman who found you on the tenth floor said you were about to jump..."
Linden: "Ah, well. That would be Chief Nicole then."
Doctor: "Yeah, and you beat her up?"
Linden: "No, that's not at all what happened. Man, she's the worst."
Doctor: "I can get you out of here well before the end of the season, if you help me out by not acting crazy."
Linden: "I can do that. Maybe I can do that. We will see."

Linden: "Do you have any gum? Like a lot. Like an assload of chewing gum."
RICHMOND RALLY
Richmond: "Thank you for coming. I am really very comfortable around poor athletic black youth. Thanks. Thanks for coming."
Jamie: "It's not working. We're still seven points behind. Be more comfortable with the poor black youth."
Richmond: "Our election is in exactly 72 hours. I cannot advertise myself more. Therefore, grass roots. Are there any poor black youth here that are members of the Chamber of Commerce or something? Better Business Bureau? Elks Club?"
Jamie: "No, that's why white guys like you run everything."
Richmond: "That won't get me out of this chair!"
Gwen: "He just hates to lose. Just like you. That's why you are in gay love."
Richmond: "I remember you not liking that either."
Gwen: "Just be yourself. So hard that it is amazing."
Richmond: "Naïve? Mentally ill?"
Gwen: "Authentic, naïve, honest, whatever. Whatever gets votes. As long as I don't get raped in some kind of backroom deal."
Richmond: "I feel like Katniss in Mockingjay."
Gwen: "That's how I feel all the time."
Darren gets everybody's attention so he can try to make a basket to impress the poor black youth.
Black Kids: "If he makes this basket, I am totally registering to vote before the election that's happening in three days. It will completely eradicate my lack of faith in a system that is intentionally structured to deny my very existence. If he just makes this basket."
Richmond, verbatim: "YES I CAN!"
Oh girl. Needless to say, he misses the basket, but instantly turns this into a moving and humanizing photo op that completely eradicates all political ennui among the oppressed within seconds. You're welcome, Seattle. Yes He Can.

Sarah Linden smokes! Sarah Linden smokes a cigarette!
Doctor: "Tell me about the Spooky Tree case that dismantled your entire mind last time."
Linden: "That's clearly in my file."
Doctor: "For the viewers at home, work with me."
Linden: "Detectives sometimes neglect themselves, all right?"
Doctor: "Regi brought you in here last time, after you scared the shit out of Jack -- who was ten -- because you took to your bed. Sorry, but that sounds mental. Tell me about this drawing."
And she... Does! Okay, so there's the Secret Origin of Sarah Linden. There was a hooker who was murdered in her apartment. When they got there, they had to break down the door because her six-year-old son Adrian -- who'd been in there for like a week, hiding, waiting for somebody to come -- couldn't reach the chain. Sarah took Adrian into the kitchen, and he drew the spooky tree picture over and over and over. I see the connection to her own childhood, and her need to protect Jack feeding into the obsession too, but the tree part is still waiting to connect up.
Doctor: "I guess you see some bad shit. The kind of shit that will make you crazy."
Linden: "And I'm guessing the same of you. You seem to manage, right?"
Doctor: "Okay, sure. But this picture. Some trees, a hill. Winter. That's nice, right?"
Linden: "He drew it, over and over, while his mother was rotting in another room. It's not so much the content that disturbs me."
Doctor: "And Adrian?"
Linden: "In the system. Listen, that whole thing where you offered me a cigarette? That was a rookie move. I guess that's why your career is going so shitty."
She smiles again. Uglier than anything.

Jamie kicks everybody out for some reason, and then finds one of those cufflinks with the Mayoral seal on it, just sitting on the carpet, like you do. Observant, my Jamie, but also closer to the floor than most. Well, less than Darren these days. Anyway, he asks somebody, a Patty, who closed the office last night. I don't know about you, but my money is on "Somebody evil."
ON THE WATERFRONT
A rosy-cheeked ginger cop tells Holder that the arrest he made on the construction site 5/10 was a henchman of Mobster Janek's, a Joseph Nowack, whom they had to cut loose once Michael Ames called in to say that he was an employee and not, in fact, lurking.

IN TREATMENT
Doctor: "So this Rosie Larsen thing, huh? Lots of stress. Lots of people freaking out for no good reason about a TV show. That's gotta do something to your head."
Linden: "And here I thought I was here because of my fictional suicide attempt."
Doctor: "I'm sure you can see the connection. So wait, they found her in the trunk of a car, and you were telling me Adrian was in a closet..."
Linden: "No connection."
Doctor: "Wait, so was it because they're both children? Is this because you're the first of the three victims? Is that the deal? You, then Adrian, then homegirl? What's the actual connection between these Killings, in your head? Why did you go crazy both times? WHAT IS THE ACTUAL POINT OF THIS ENTIRE SHOW?"
...? Maybe? Maybe she will? Maybe we can finally move on to a new kind of show? Maybe we don't have Showtime Syndrome after all and we can actually develop the premise, instead of just giving it a greasy cold handjob that never quite gets us there, after even years?
Ha! No. Of course not.
Linden: "I have been cooperative, Health Professional. I have answered your queries."
Doctor: "Oh, fuck me? How about fuck you? Enjoy the 72 hours."
Linden: "Well. I see. I will have to act inordinately insane, then."
Doctor: "That's one approach."
Linden acts inordinately insane at this time. Which, so would you -- I mean it makes sense -- but then also? You had one job. All you had to do was not act crazy for like ten minutes. And instead, you acted super crazy after about five minutes.
And ordinarily I would make a joke about how of course she's as bad at acting normal as she is at everything else, but: She is not a well woman! It is not outwith the straining borders of reality that she would be unable to do this. She can't even do the job she was trained to do -- got fired from, in fact, for being simultaneously too good and not very good at all -- so how's she supposed to avoid doing the one thing that life really seems to want her to do? And wasn't part of this show's implicit promise just this?
One day, Sarah Linden is going to go bugshit crazy. It will probably happen before you find out who killed Rosie Larsen. But then, plenty of stuff will probably happen before then. Possibly all the things that will ever happen, infinite events, will happen before that happens. But one of them will definitely be Sarah Linden's brain completely shitting the bed.

Darren: "I just got off the phone with TV! They said we can buy some ad space..."
Jamie: "Well, here's a City Crest cufflink I randomly found. Why would Gwen have been meeting the Mayor here last night before she closed up the office?"
Darren: "I have no idea."
And you won't, because even though you think your dumb suicide secret is the grossest, Gwen's is way scarier -- and at least she was brave enough to put it into play. But I don't know how Darren's supposed to ask, and I for sure don't know how Gwen's going to answer.
"Oh, I just called him in for a late-night meeting about how he raped me this one time back when I was a little kid. Did I not put that on the Outlook calendar? My bad."
LARSEN
Rosie's voicemail: "This is Rosie Larsen! I am either dead or very, very busy right now and can't take your call!"
Stan: "Rosie, I'm not really your father. I guess you already knew that. But also, I'm cool with that because you're awesome. Also, you are dead. Guess you know that too. I'm just really going through a lot right now."
Rosie: "Isn't there anybody left to apologize to? Terry said that would help."
Stan: "Listen, Alexei and Ahmed both told me to fuck myself, and Tommy just wants ice cream and no more getting punched. Alexei's dad and you are both too dead to give me the satisfaction, so I'm running out of people. Probably I will go on a killing spree in the season finale. Or kill myself."
Rosie: "Please. If your wife The Living Embodiment Of Desperation can't manage to schedule a suicide, I doubt you're going to pull one together."
Stan: "Never underestimate a Larsen's ability to multitask."
Rosie: "Tell me about it."
VISITING HRS
Holder: "How are you doing in here?"
Linden: "Former Partner, we don't have a lot of time. Facts."
Holder: "There was a break-in at the waterfront, one of Janek's guys, and Ames got the guy out of jail."
Linden: "There was a white key-card up there."
Holder: "Meanwhile, things were afoot at the casino..."
Linden: "There was a white key-card up there."
He takes her in, for a moment. There's a lot to take in, in a place like that. I spent a lot of time visiting my mother in places like this, growing up. Everything is gray and hard, and everyone's so muted or so crazy that it all reduces to one white frequency and you start to feel just as dazed and quiet as everybody else, everybody locked into their own thing that they have to keep doing.

HQ
Lt. Carlson: "Why is there a meth addict in my car?!"
Holder: "I have information for you. Nowak was at the waterfront to -- get this -- bury some Indian bones off the reservation. Something about his arrest led to a meeting on the tenth floor between Ames, the Mayor and Chief Nicole. Which Rosie saw, and died."
Carlson, making Weird Leap #1: "Seems like you're saying the Mayor sabotaged his own public works project, the cornerstone of his campaign..."
Holder: "Yeah, and Ames did the same with the biggest job of his career. I guess they all knew there was a bigger payday down the road."
Carlson: "Are you saying I'm a patsy to this whole conspiracy? I'm one of the bad guys?"
Holder, with Weird Leap #2: "Not necessarily. Give me Sarah Linden's psychiatrist's name, and we can solve the whole thing. This Cold Case Which Is Not One."
I'm not sure how any of that tracks, even after listening to the conversation a few times to see what I missed, but whatever. I like both these boys and I am not comfortable with Sarah Linden being in the nuthouse, so just get there.
RICHMOND
Gwen: "Your poor black kid video is doing viral gangbusters!"
Darren: "We are so knowledgeable about the internet. We grownups."
Gwen: "It was just a random person that filmed it and edited it and put it on fake Youtube and made it go viral!"
Darren: "That's so cool that random people are doing your job for you. It makes me believe in myself! Hey, why did you bring the Mayor here last night?"
Gwen: "Oh, he raped me this one time when I was in middle school."
Darren: "What? That is fucking fucked up!"
Gwen: "Wait, I mean he just kissed me. Not as big a deal."
Darren: "Then I will hold your hand."
Gwen: "I'll take any storyline I can get. Even one that goes on for an entire month and ends up being about a guy kissing me this one time."
LARSEN
Stan: "I got you a dog! And a whore aunt, she moved back in too. But a dog!"
Denny: "He has one eye!"
Terry: "He's a pirate dog!"
Tommy: "I am going to cut him open and paint my body with his blood the second your back is turned. In this way I shall be transformed. My true and terrible nature will reveal itself, and I will become an earthbound God, who sees beyond Time and Space and into the infinite abyss. Your souls will be my playthings."

Dog: "That makes me pee. I hate my scary new home."
Larsens: "Pee! Is funny!"
Tommy: "All will burn. This is my decree."
HOSPITAL
Linden: "I am high as a motherfucking kite. Mental health is the pits!"
She sees a tray of food and, having never eaten anything before, digs the hell in. Doctor Lady shows up at her door, smiling, and they decide to try it again.
Linden: "Surprise! I like talking about the extremely gross details of the murder. I can do this all day. The guy chased Rosie through the woods for hours, beat her with serious hate, but she was alive when the car went in the water. He didn't want to see her eyes."
Doctor: "What's this got to do with Adrian?"
Linden: "I am actually fairly mysterious to myself, Doctor."
Doctor: "No, what's the deal with these two murders."
Linden: "The assumption with the first murder was that the dad did it, and we put him away. But I don't think that's likely because the killer left through the window, which is not what my profiler powers tell me about the dad."
Doctor: "Wait. So you're telling me you're personally involved with a whole other Killing? Which you solved -- in the season finale, so to speak -- but then it turned out you didn't actually solve that one either?"
Linden: "This show is nothing if not consistent, Doc."

Doctor: "Are we talking about you now?"
Linden, verbatim: "No, they're dead. They don't need saving anymore."
Sarah Linden was five years old when her mother left the house to pay the light bill. And she never came back. CPS found Sarah there, the morning. Just like Adrian.
Linden, verbatim: "That was a long time ago I'm fine now."
Just like Adrian, but just like Mitch too. And Stan. And Tommy and Denny. And Darren Richmond. Waiting in a room for somebody who's never coming back to save you.
Doctor: "Really?"
Linden falls apart. Not like before. Maybe the good way.
Linden: "Whatever you want me to say, I'll say."
Doctor: "You spent the night alone in the dark..."
Sarah cries, she nearly nods. The doctor watches her, closely. And just before she opens her mouth, just before she says her secret, there's a knock on the door: She's been released.
Doctor: "...Sarah, go ahead. What were you going to say?"
Sarah stands, and leaves. They both knew it was going to happen, and then it did.
Stephen's outside with Rick Felder. Dr. -- did we know this? -- Rick Felder. Because why, on this show, as a professional person of any stripe on this particular show, would you not marry your singlemost craziest patient. Although I guess it explains why he was so patient all last season.
Rick: "I'll help get her out, but she's your responsibility now."
Sarah's ex-fiancé signs the paperwork to get her free, and she spots him through the door, but he's gone before she gets out. She's Stephen's responsibility now. Presumably Rick heads back to Sonoma, to fuck other psychiatric patients. Does that even count as a twist? Maybe we already knew that. But either way, duh. Of course he was her psychiatrist. That's so Sarah Linden that she would pull that.
Stan has replaced the Ahmeds' porch light; Stan turns off the lamp in Rosie's room. Two kinds of vigil. A blogger or something takes Gwen's money for setting up the coincidental viral video, one more Dumbo feather in a very empty cap, with 48 hours to go. Chief Nicole and Roberta supervise the renovations upstairs at the casino; they don't even know the keycard's still there, being buried under the floorboards, long into the night.
And Stephen drives her home. He looks over every now and then, to make sure that she's still asleep. That she's not going anywhere.
