There is no time wasted after last week, and we learn that Meredith does in fact have a number of genetic markers that indicate she could get Alzheimer's. She seems pretty convinced that it's going to happen for sure while Derek wants to believe that it's not a foregone conclusion. Regardless, it's time to update their wills (which they should have done anyway since Lexie is still listed as in line to be Zola's guardian) which makes things even more uncomfortable because Mere wants to be taken out like a racehorse with a broken leg the second she forgets her car keys, and Derek isn't so into that idea. Back to the guardian issue -- Cristina and Owen had been second in line behind Lexie and while Mere is sure Cristina would still do it, Derek has her double check and it turns out that Cristina really only wants to be the cool aunt. That decided, Mere and Derek start figuring out which of his sisters would be good for the job. Figuring this out about herself seems to finally give Cristina some insight into why Owen has been so overinvolved in Ethan's dad's treatment -- she realizes that he's super attached to the kid and that this could potentially be a sign of some major issues coming their way. In the short term, when Ethan's grandmother is delayed in picking him up, Owen arranges for him to be admitted to the hospital for a night so that he doesn't have to spend the night under the watch of social services.
Smash can't let neuro go and so he continues to monitor all of the post-op patients with whom he was involved before. Derek lets it slide because he likes Smash and the lattes he provides, and Smash gets him to admit that he finds Heather annoying. But when Smash can't keep up both his actual job with Richard in the pit at the same time as he monitors Derek's patients, Derek has to cut him loose for real. But it's not just for the week -- he tells Smash honestly that Heather has an instinct for neuro that Smash doesn't have, and that he should probably find a new specialty to which he is better suited. I still don't understand why two interns can't both focus on the same specialty, but I suppose that's a question for another day.
Matthew is doing better and about to be released from the hospital, so… his mom is coming to pick him up. April is freaked out about this, thinking he can't walk or something, but Matthew admits he just wanted his mom to meet April. At the same time, April and Owen are hosting two doctors from Syria who have had to move from being general practitioners to being essentially field surgeons in the middle of a war. The Seattle docs are helping teach them methods that they can use in the field, using only their ridiculously limited amount of supplies. All of the surgeons pitch in at some point or another and are able to come up with a lot of good techniques and advice to help them out. Of course while this is going on Mere, Cristina and April talk about Matthew and his mom and how April can't meet her because she's still feeling guilty about lying to him about her virginity. One of the Syrian docs asks April what she is going to do, and eventually this leads to April finally coming clean to Matthew about her misplaced virginity. Of course, as we all knew would happen, he's way more upset about her lying to him than he is about her actually not being a virgin and when his mom comes to pick him up, it's obvious he's not so keen anymore on introducing the women to each other. April decides that honesty isn't all it's cracked up to be, so she goes and steals a bunch of medical supplies and equipment to send back to Syria with the two doctors.
The lightest story of the week is how Callie is trying to get Jackson to vote to fund her cartilage research -- after her TED speech, she is now a "viral sensation" and she wants to get funding so she can start growing more cartilage from thin air. Jackson is already tired of people trying to pitch him on pet projects but it shows no sign of stopping. Richard finally offers to buy him dinner so that he can pitch a project of his own and when Jackson balks, Richard advises him that he learned never to pass up a free dinner like that. He also advises him that basically the hospital is throwing him a bone by letting him still operate but basically, his main job now is as an administrator deciding things like what research projects will be funded.
Bailey has a couple of patients come in with infected surgical sites, and when Leah realizes that she worked on both patients when she had the flu she thinks she must have infected them somehow. The infections only get worse, and so Leah is ordered to go find all of the patients she treated when she was sick so that the hospital can call them back to make sure they aren't infected too. A third patient comes in to the ER and Richard treats him, but he continues to go downhill as the first patient who came in dies. Bailey is livid and sure that Leah is the common denominator, and Leah is fairly sure that she's about to be fired. But once she goes through all of her old notes, Leah comes to the realization that she didn't treat all of the infected patients and she and Mere have to go tell Bailey that in fact, Bailey is the only doctor who touched all three of them. This comes at the end of a meeting about the infections, and it ends ominously with Richard taking over Bailey's two remaining patients, Jackson calling one of their attorneys, and Owen forbidding Bailey to leave the room as they try to figure out just what could be going on.
Previously on Grey's Anatomy: last week's episode. Seriously, I can't figure out the rhyme or reason for the previouslys considering that they almost never show them but when they do... it's just last week's episode? If they were reminding us of something that happened a while back and was going to be pertinent again, I'd understand it much more. Especially when we pick up just the day after when last week's episode ended. Mere tells us that patients always say they want the truth, but that they usually don't know what they are talking about. She and Derek are sitting in front of Bailey, who is dithering before giving Mere the results of her genome mapping. Zola's results were inconclusive, which Bailey says isn't a bad thing and they just might want to run it again, but they did get results for Mere. She starts asking them some questions but Mere refuses to answer and keeps demanding the results. Finally, she tells Bailey that she's Mere's mentor and friend but that if she doesn't just spit it out, Mere is going to punch her. Bailey finally caves and says that Mere has tested positive for more than one genetic marker for Alzheimer's. Mere's face goes blank and although Bailey keeps talking, Mere seems to kind of shut down.
Paul is still unconscious, and Owen is hanging out while Cristina looks him over. Owen reports that Rachel is still unconscious as well, so he had Ethan stay in peds the night before to keep social services at bay until his grandmother arrives later that day. Cristina tries to flirt with Owen but his focus is totally on Ethan and he frets about Paul still being unconscious. Cristina tells him that it could be up to eight days for him to wake up, and that they only have to worry after those eight days. Owen then asks if she spoke to Jeff about it, and the very notion offends her. Owen makes a crack about Jeff not supervising her much and tries to get her to discuss Paul's treatment with him, but Cristina points out that everything she's doing is standard and Jeff would think she's lost her mind if she starts asking him about it. Owen is totally unconcerned about that and just quips that Jeff can come talk to him about it if he has a problem. He leaves a very confused Cristina in Paul's room.
Leah walks up to Stephanie and tries to sweet talk her into trading services for the day. Leah tells her that she is with Bailey, and she's terrified because last time they were together she ordered the wrong test twice and she knows Bailey has a personal 3-strike policy. Did we know this? It sounds new. Regardless, Stephanie is working with Jackson so even if she had a mind to help Leah, she totally wouldn't. Bailey then marches up to give Leah grief about leaving crumbs and pizza sauce on her laptop, and a terrified Leah runs off to clean up her mess. Bailey then turns to Alex and takes her mood out on him, yelling that he and the others are training sloppy interns, and since she trained them, they are now, "bringing shame to the whole family." Poor Alex just got there and has no idea what he just walked into.
April and Owen have two SGMH schwag bags and they are showing off all of the hospital-branded goodies to Arizona while explaining to Richard that they have two Syrian doctors coming over who used to be general practitioners before the war but who are now helping run a field hospital. They have been at Seattle Pres for trauma training (which is so weird, since you'd think that they'd be studying trauma at the hospital with the much-talked-about Level1 trauma center) and then are coming to SGMH for a crash course in basic surgical skills. (Ah, a chance to get more doctors involved in this storyline. I see.) Richard realizes the sad point that Arizona's involvement means that they are currently losing a lot of children over there, and everyone takes a moment to contemplate just how horrible that is. Callie has joined them and when Owen mentions all of the supplies that they are sending back, Callie jumps on this and notes that with everyone getting money for these pet projects, Callie needs to put in for her cartilage money while there's still money to throw around. I thought we already learned that the money was already allocated and she should know that, as a member of the board, but I guess some more magically materialized. Stephanie comes in with some info for Owen and April calls her over so she can ask about Matthew. When she hears that Matthew's mom is coming to pick him up after his overnight stay, April freaks out and somehow figures this means he can't walk on his own. Rather than telling her he can walk fine, Stephanie says that she has to ask Jackson any questions about how Matthew's condition.
Bailey and Leah go and see their first patient, a woman named Joyce who has a nasty infection on her arm where Bailey just put in a dialysis graft two weeks earlier. Joyce's husband is much more worried than Joyce is; Bailey tells them that it is infected, but that they are going to do some tests and figure out what could be going on. The couple are sweet and nice, and they love Bailey... we all know this can't be good.
Derek and Mere are having a talk in the stairwell about her test results and he insists that just because she has risk factors, it's not a guarantee that she's going to get Alzheimer's. Mere insists she knows this but it's also inspired her to update their wills. This seems to freak Derek out even more and he says that even if she gets sick, it could be decades away. I know he's kind of terrified but her mom did have early onset Alzheimer's and besides, isn't having an updated will a good idea no matter what? Especially when, as Mere points out, Lexie is still listed as Zola's guardian and Owen and Cristina are her backups. Genome mapping or no, it's always a good idea to have a still-living family member be your emergency guardian, I should think. Derek is totally being an ostrich but Mere insists and he finally agrees to call their lawyer.

Once the Syrian docs arrive, Owen, April and Arizona take them to one of the skills labs where they have a skinless dummy laid out on a gurney along with a tray of instruments so that they can teach some procedures. Owen explains that they want to replicate the field conditions as closely as possible so instead of using lasers and fancy doothingys like they would have in a hospital, they will just use the items on the tray in front of them. The docs have a short conversation in Arabic and then one, Dr. Darvish, explains to Owen that recently the supply trucks have been unable to reach them and the electricity has been spotty so they will have to adjust what's on the tray if they want to make it real. Owen encourages him to do so since they want to help as much as possible so Darvish walks over and almost apologetically starts pulling most of the leftover instruments off of the tray, leaving just a couple of instruments, some gauze, some tubing, and a couple of other odds and ends. The other doc, who never gets a name but is played by Anthony Azizi, (a total Hey, It's That Guy!) then goes and turns off all of the overhead lights, so that they are in complete darkness except for his small flashlight. He then announces, "Now, we go." The Seattle docs definitely have their work cut out for them.
Smash can't bear the thought of letting neuro go, so he runs up to Derek and asks if he can follow up on the day's patients, "Because I care." He also comes bearing a latte for Derek, and while Derek is exasperated, the coffee is enticing. He reminds Smash he's supposed to be learning other things but Smash claims he can run the pit like he's supposed to as well as manage Derek's post-ops. Heather walks up, smacking on some gum and without coffee, so when she asks Derek a question before beginning his post-ops, he tells her Smash already did them. I'm not sure if he actually has done them yet, since it seemed like Smash was asking permission, but when they ask Smash if there is anything they should know, he tells them that Rachel is awake. Considering all of the drama surrounding this patient, you'd have think he would have led with that. Derek (with the latte) and Heather run to her room and Derek tells Smash to let Owen know she's up.

Owen, in turn, gets Ethan and takes him to his mom's room, but Ethan is too scared to go in right away in case his mom still doesn't know who he is. Owen gives him a pep talk and Ethan finally asks tentatively if Owen is sure his mom is back to her old self. Owen admits that he doesn't know for sure, but he thinks Ethan should try. I would think a simple question from Derek about her son would take care of this instead of sending in an already fairly traumatized 10-year-old to test the waters, but in Ethan is sent in anyway. Fortunately, his mom remembers him and gathers him in a big hug as she cries with joy that he is okay. Ethan is delighted, and Owen heaves a sigh of relief.
Derek finds Mere since he has the paperwork from their attorney; he explains that they need both a guardian and a backup in the will. Since Cristina and Owen were originally the backups, Mere says that Cristina will of course move up to the top spot and then they can pick a Shepherd sister for the alternate. Derek is pretty sure that Cristina doesn't want the job but Mere is sure she does, since this is Zola and Fetus, rather than two random kids off the street. Derek is exasperated that Mere is calling the baby Fetus, though I find it rather hilarious and appropriate for Mere. Derek tells Mere to talk to Cristina anyway -- if she does want the kids, then Derek will be wrong and everyone will be happy about everything.
Callie's TED speech was apparently a massive success, and she's very proud to report that now, "Cartilage is trending." She brags about this to Jackson because she now wants money for a cartilage-growing lab, and figures that if she has Jackson's and Arizona's votes along with her own, she's in good shape. Jackson isn't happy to be pitched and reminds Callie that he's not an ATM, but she's not listening. Alex was behind them and bitterly butts in to ask if this is how their meetings work -- they whisper about their pet projects and then give themselves all the money. This isn't quite true considering the two big research projects we know about are Jeff's lotus valve and Bailey's genome mapping, but I guess Alex is still feeling left out in the cold. He barks that he wants money to take his orphan program global. A very frustrated Jackson yells at them that anyone who wants money is welcome to submit a written proposal per the stated procedure. Richard is there too, and Cristina and Mere join them, but no one is sure why Owen cancelled all of their surgeries for half a day. On cue, he, April and Arizona waltz in with the box of supplies and explain the situation, telling the assembled surgeons that they need to figure out how to do all of the procedures he has on a list with just the supplies in the box. It's just like Apollo 13 only, you know, not in space. Cristina thinks it's impossible but Owen orders them to figure it all out.

Leah takes Joyce's lab results to Bailey and admits that the woman isn't doing well so Bailey tells Leah to admit her. Leah then very tentatively tells Bailey that they now have a second patient in with post-op complications, who had surgery the same day as Joyce. Leah scrubbed in on both of the surgeries with Bailey, and managed their post-op care. Bailey tries to keep her fury at bay as she orders Leah to comb through all of the charts from that day to try and figure out what she might have done wrong. She grabs Stephanie to assist her while a terrified Leah tries to figure out what might have gone wrong.
Leah is flipping through her notes when Steph comes up and reports that the second patient, Kathy, is probably going to need surgery and that Mere and Bailey are about to operate on Joyce to take out her shunt. Leah looks even more dejected than before and seems to have realized what went wrong -- she admits to Stephanie that she was sick on the day that she cared for both of these patients. Stephanie actually has the gall to act scandalized that Leah came in sick, and Leah yells back that all of them always come in when they are sick. She is still trying to write these things off as normal, coincidental post-op infections, but we know that this wouldn't be a plot point if that were the case.

Callie, Richard, Jackson and April are brainstorming for the Syrians when Richard remembers that sugar can be used as a dressing that doesn't need to be changed all the time the way cause would be. April runs off to see if the docs still have access to sugar. That's a pretty cool little factoid, actually.
Cristina, Meredith and Derek are trying to figure out some alternative surgical techniques by drilling holes in a side of meat with a hand drill, and all of them seem to be a little bit of a loss. Fortunately, Callie can teach the docs fracture repairs and Jackson has figured out a way for them to do skin grafts. Owen moseys over to Derek and asks how long it will be until Rachel is out of the ICU, and is quite surprised to hear that Smash would have the info. Derek just makes the excuse that Smash feels connected to the patients and likes to follow through, and Derek like lattes too much to stop him. Arizona then comes in and reports that there was a storm on the East Coast that is delaying Ethan's grandmother's plane for one day, so she thinks Owen should call social services so that he has a place to stay for the night. Owen heaves yet another sigh, and Cristina picks up on it as I'm sure everyone in the room must have, for all his non-subtlety.
Bailey gives Joyce's husband an update, which is that unfortunately she's got some extra aggressive infection. He beats himself up for letting her put off going to the doctor for a day, but Bailey assures him that she's going to take care of his wife. Leah watches it all from a distance, looking like she's about to hurl.
As Jackson teaches Anthony how to do a skin graft with a knife, Callie is showing Darvish how to put screws into a man's leg. She notices him looking around as he does so, and he explains that he's trying to figure out how best to hold the patient down and still while he works. Callie assures him that the patient will be sedated but Darvish replies that they aren't sedated if you don't have anesthesia. Callie and Jackson are horrified, but she quickly checks herself and works to figure out a new non-anesthesia approach that includes more than just having the patient bite on a belt.
April finally goes to see Matthew, apologizes way too much for being busy, you know, being a surgeon, and then begins to inspect his wounds while freaking out about his not being able to walk. He handles all of this surprisingly well and manages to peel her off and calmly tell her that he can walk just fine. April apparently never talked to Jackson, and just assumed that Matthew's mom was picking him up because he was incapacitated. How about the idea that maybe Matthew didn't want to drive himself home with lacerations and burns over a large portion of his body, and moms are good people to call to pick you up and provide transport in a situation like that? Well, it turns out it's not that either -- Matthew is having his mom come to the hospital so that he can introduce her to April. April is super relieved but then absorbs what he said and panic starts to shine behind her eyes.

Smash actually does do some work in the pit, and he pages Richard regarding a guy named Seth who just came in with an infected surgical site. But then Smash gets a page regarding an MRI for Derek, so he takes off while trying to convince Richard that his generation is, "all about multitasking." Yes, but that means you actually do multiple things at one time, Smash, not that you do one thing in lieu of another.
Richard goes to see Seth, who is generally sweaty and ill looking and explains that he was there two weeks earlier for surgery. Richard pulls up his file and sees that Bailey was his surgeon, and then lifts off the bandage on Seth's arm to reveal the same oozing, dark, nasty infection that Joyce had on her arm.
It's Mere and Cristina's turn to work with the Syrian docs, and Cristina has some (hopefully fake) lungs hanging from a little apparatus and she's using them to show Anthony how to do some procedures while he works on a dummy. April walks in and proceeds to have a meltdown about how she can't meet Matthew's mom because she can't lie to her, too. Unless she figures that they would have a conversation about April's virginity after they shook hands I think she's safe, but I suppose she just means she can't involve his mom in this mockery of a relationship. Mere needles her about lying to Matthew and Cristina mocks him for having his mom pick him up. April is totally indignant and yells at them that he has a good relationship with his mom and respects women and she's so incensed that she doesn't notice that Anthony is totally listening to everything while he works. Ah, gossip: the universal language. April continues to yell about how great Matthew is and so finally Mere suggests that in that case, she should just go ahead and tell him the truth. It's not what April wants to hear, so she just tells Anthony that she's got a technique for something or other to show him when he's done, and then she flees.
Callie finishes up teaching Darvish how to make a splint out of duct tape, just in time for her phone to beep that she has 27 more emails waiting wondering about the future of her cartilage research. She singsongs to Jackson that this should sound like money to his ears, but Jackson just tells her to go bug Derek for his vote instead. The poor boy prince already seems completely exhausted by his new job, even if he is getting better at it. Callie assures him that she will go to Derek, and then tells him breathily about how she's got big, amazing dreams full of cartilage-building machines. Jackson is unimpressed, but Darvish tells her he has that dream all the time too. I'm actually sad we only get these guys for one episode.

Mere and Bailey then do Joyce's surgery and find that the infection is pretty deep. As they work, Bailey asks Mere if she is okay and Mere yells at her for treating her with kid gloves. She asserts that she knew what she was asking when she had the test done. Bailey just tells her that she is there if Mere needs to talk, and then changes the subject to chastise Mere for training sloppy interns. She's sure Leah caused these infections by coming to work sick, and is still ranting about it when Richard comes in to tell her about Seth. It takes Bailey a moment to realize that there truly is a third infected patient, but there's Bad News Music playing over the scene so we know it's really serious.
When the surgery is over the three of them discuss the situation and Richard tells Bailey that she has to go tell Hunt and he'll take care of Seth while she does that. Once she leaves, he asks which intern it was and Mere tells him it was Leah.
April walks into the supply room and finds Darvish alone, just staring at the supplies. When she asks if he needs anything he tells her he's just looking and enjoying the quiet. With tears in his eyes, he adds softly that they don't have a lot of quiet anymore. April looks around with a fresh perspective at the bounty of supplies surrounding them.
Owen goes to Ethan to explain that his grandmother was delayed by a day, so Carol, the woman from social services, is going to set him up with a place to stay. Ethan is distressed at the idea and wants to stay in the hospital again near his parents, so Owen tries to convince the kid that he'll have a good dinner, and video games, and it will be just peachy. Ethan's response, though, is to start panting. I think he's supposed to be having a legitimate panic attack but "panicked breathing" is maybe not this kid's strongest skill. That, or he realizes that Owen is in too deep at this point and that he won't be able to handle seeing Ethan so upset so he's faking it. For the record, I think it's normal "my parents both might die and I'm only 10" upset.
Cristina is showing Anthony how to do some particular stitches on something that looks like a red version of my awesome gin and titonic ice cube tray when Mere walks in and makes Cristina promise to kill her with a lethal injection even BEFORE she starts forgetting her keys. Cristina of course agrees to it immediately, but Mere insists she's serious and that she wants to be done away with early before she sets fire to the house or winds up in a nursing home. She's absolutely adamant that her kids never go through what she went through. Cristina tells her, "Mere, you had me at 'lethal injection.'"

She's absolutely adamant that her kids never go through what she went through. Cristina tells her, "Mere, you had me at 'lethal injection.'"

We cut to the end of her telling Owen about the three infected patients, and Leah and Mere are standing back while they talk. Owen tells Bailey to call Infection Control and then tells Leah to pull all of her charts from that day (which I believe she already did) because they get to call every single patient she touched to have them come back in for an examination. He's pissed and declares that it's going to be a nightmare. Leah turns to Mere after the others leave and asks if they are going to fire her. Oh, girlfriend, no one but April ever gets fired from this hospital. Let's all go back to the LVAD situation -- if that didn't get an intern or two fired, nothing will. Mere just tells her not to think about it.
Mere then visits Cristina in Paul's room and when she asks if he is still unconscious, Cristina picks up his arm and lets it flop back down to the bed. I can only imagine the outtakes in this scene. Also, how funny would it be to be an actor and get that job? "You're going to speak two lines, and then lie unconscious for two full episodes while various people have conversations over your head." Cristina isn't worried about him and thinks he'll wake up in a couple of days, but is perturbed that Owen won't calm down about it. Mere mentions that Leah might be leaving the program and Cristina cares for half a second, but then goes back to worrying about Owen and wonders if he is starting to dislike being Chief, and maybe he misses teaching. Her reason for thinking that is his comment about Jeff not supervising her enough. Mere can't help but laugh as she points out that Owen might just be annoyed because Jeff really isn't supervising her. Cristina just thinks that offering to lethally inject Mere should have gotten her some friendly sympathy for at least the rest of the day.
Richard seeks out Derek to tell him about how Smash didn't scrub in with Richard on Seth's surgery because he was too busy getting an MRI just right for Derek. Derek just sighs, realizing he's about to lose his lattes. Smash of course runs up right then to ask Derek a question since he is setting his schedule for the day, and Richard gives Derek a pointed look and leaves them alone. Derek tells Smash he has to let Heather do this stuff since she's the one on his service. Rather pathetically, Smash points out hopefully that Heather annoys Derek, but he just counters that Heather has better neuro instincts than Smash does. And while Smash makes up for it with tons of work, he wants to teach someone who has the natural flair for it. Smash is totally hurt by this and argues that this is what he is passionate about, hoping that will win Derek back over. But Derek realizes this is going to take some tough love and he announces that Heather is better at this than Smash is. He then softens as he tells Smash that he's going to be a great surgeon, and he should go and figure out where that will be because apparently it won't be in neuro. I still find it weird that two interns can't specialize in the same thing, but I've never been the med school, so maybe this is really is some crazy rule. When Heather walks up and says hi, Smash looks like she just ran over his dog and then finally shuffles off. Heather comments brightly that he can't seem to take a hint -- hmm, so maybe she does have a little bit of an edge after all. As they go to check on Rachel, Derek notes that he can smell her gum so we know that he really does find her annoying even if with all of her natural talent and pen-catching skillz.

Darvish is still practicing a technique that Arizona showed him but she cheers him on and tells him he's got it. He says that he's going to keep practicing, but pauses to thank her sincerely for everything she and the others taught them. Arizona is sad because she wishes that they could do more, but Darvish tells her that if this saves even just one child, it's worth it. Of course, this seems to hit a chord for Arizona.
Cut to her in a room in peds telling a very skeptical nurse about the fake illness that Ethan just might have so they have to keep him overnight for observation. Owen is there and thanks her sincerely, and once she goes he turns to Ethan sitting in bed and tells him he can watch TV and eat pudding and that Owen is going to try and find him some comic books. He's surprised that Ethan still seems upset and finally Ethan tells him it's because Owen said he was sick. Didn't the kid just stay the night before in peds as well? I guess he's just young but I would have thought he'd catch on. Owen assures him that everyone knows they are just pretending so that Ethan can stay the night near his mom and dad, but that he's perfectly fine. Ethan ponders this and then asks if his mom and dad are fake sick too. Owen admits that it's not, and when Ethan asks reports that his dad still isn't awake and he doesn't know if he's going to ever wake up. The camera pulls back as Owen sits on the bed and talks to him.
And we see that Cristina is in the hallway watching them, and she's finally figured out just why Owen has been acting so crazy for the past couple of days. Mere is with her and admits that kids make you crazy, but she finds it kind of cute. If only that would rub off on Cristina, but I'm not sure that will ever happen. Leah comes and finds Mere and calls her over.
Once Mere walks up, Leah tells her that she's not going to get fired and Mere is basically like, hang on, let's not get crazy. But then Leah shows her something on one of the tablets.
At the same time, Stephanie walks past Joyce's husband and up to Bailey to quietly tell her that Joyce is crashing. Bailey is shocked and they sprint off, while Mr. Joyce stands up and watches them go, seeming to suspect something is wrong with his wife.
April has a bag slung over her shoulder and walks Anthony into a fancy supply room -- one with a lot of electronic equipment on the shelves. He insists that they have already given them a ton of supplies and that this stuff is expensive, but April tells him that these things will really help. She pulls a few more empty bags out of the one on her shoulder, and proceeds to start stuffing them with all sorts of equipment. Anthony is a little bit nervous and asks if she should talk to Owen abut she tells him not to worry about it and then mutters to herself that honesty isn't all it's cracked up to be. Oh APRIL. Has there been another character who so consistently makes such ridiculously boneheaded decisions that all could have been really easily avoided? She takes poor decision making to a whole new and special level. I wonder if this is going to be firing number three.

Later that evening Derek finds Mere standing outside, and she reports that Cristina is going to pull the trigger if need be. Derek is rather exasperated and says that since they are married, he'd like them to make that decision together. Oh Derek, Mere has matured a ton and become rather awesome, but that's one way in which she'll never change -- if you try and stop her on big things like this, she's going to go to Cristina instead every time. But she does eventually agree to talk to him about it while warning him that she's going to be a handful if she starts to lose her mind. He then hands over a piece of paper containing his own genome map. Mere notes that he's got an increased risk for liver and prostate cancer, male pattern baldness (HA), and heroin addiction. They have a laugh about him turning into a bald heroin addict but his point is that all of these results are maybes and they have no idea how life is actually going to turn out. Mere finally seems to admit that this is true, and maybe they will be fine. I mean, come on, there's no way that luscious mane is falling out.
Arizona tiptoes up to Matthew's room; his mom has arrived and is helping him pack up his things to go. He finally notices April in the doorway but just gives a half-wave and she realizes this is not an invitation to meet his mother after all. Dejected, she walks away.
Richard finds Jackson getting ready to go and offers to buy him dinner so that he can talk to him about a research project. Jackson is fed up with it all and tells him that he's welcome to submit a proposal in writing like everyone else, and then the board will vote. He muses angrily that maybe he has an idea too, but if he did he'd submit it in writing as per instructions. Richard listens to him, but then decides he needs a little bit of honesty sent his way. Richard reminds him that he's the most powerful vote on the board, and that basically they are "letting" him still be a surgeon to be nice but that from here on out, his only project is the hospital. He then offers Jackson some advice from his own stint as Chief -- if someone offers to buy him dinner to talk his ear off about something... Jackson realizes he should just say yes to the free meal. Richard cries happily that he's a natural.

Bailey leads a team working on Joyce, shocking her, and finally Bailey resorts to desperate chest compressions. But it's too late, Joyce has died.
At the elevator, April sees off Anthony and Dr. Darvish, and Anthony gives her a short hug before they go.
The board members, minus Mere but plus Richard, are all in a conference room discussing the infected patients. The second patient who came in is also going to need surgery, and there's a whiff of fear in the room about what could possibly be happening. Jackson thinks that they need to make a public statement before the news leaks out on its own. Bailey then comes in and reports that Joyce didn't make it. As they all discuss how best to treat the other two, Mere and Leah walk in, and Bailey starts to unload on Leah about how Joyce died and it's her fault. Mere tries to cut in but Bailey won't let her, finally, though, Mere is able to say that Leah can't be the one responsible. It turns out she only worked on two of the three patients and the charts show that the only doctor who touched all three is... Bailey herself. Bailey is stunned, but the others all jump into action. Jackson gets on the phone with the legal department to send someone over. Richard tells Owen he'll handle the other patient. Bailey just starts to yell that anything could have caused this but when Arizona mentions an investigation, she starts to deflate and get nervous, and says she will get her notes. Owen tells her to sit down, but it's like she can't understand the words and she protests that she has to work on her other patients and she also has to notify Joyce's husband. Owen sends Mere and Leah to do that job and more forcefully tells Bailey that she's to sit down. She finally does, and everyone in the room looks in one way or another like they'd rather be anywhere else. Mere warns us to be careful what we ask for when we ask a doctor to be straight with us.
