Hey, for once we don't open an episode with Felicity making a tape! Knoll is lying on a couch, telling someone about his problems. He's doing the whole "a friend of mine has this problem" thing that hasn't worked since The Brady Bunch. Knoll explains that there's a guy on his floor who really likes this girl, but that she keeps coming to him to talk about another guy. A voice suggests that Knoll's "friend" has that "nice guy friend" thing going on. Knoll says that the guy swears there is a spark there, but that he can't make it happen. Another voice says that this RA meeting is supposed to be about the new fire code. See what they did there? With Knoll lying down and the off-screen voice, you thought he was talking to a counselor or something. Unfortunately, Toni Pavone doesn't appear this season. Some guy tells the fire code girl to chill out. Marissa Ribisi doesn't understand Knoll's "friend's" problem. Knoll says that his friend doesn't know what to do. Marissa suggests that his friend "draw the line." And we have an episode title! The chill out guy agrees. Some other guy suggests that Knoll's friend say, "I like you, but I don't want to be your girlfriend. I don't want to talk to you about this other guy anymore. So, stop it! Stop talking to me about this other guy!" Knoll looks around, and everyone seems to agree with this advice.
So now we get Felicity making the tape. Felicity tells Sally that "buttinsky" is a weird word, and that it's actually in the dictionary. Felicity reads the definition -- "a troublesome meddler" -- but I'm sure you all know what it means. Who hasn't heard that word before? I guess Felicity really did lead a sheltered life. Felicity realizes that she is a buttinsky, and that it's ruined her whole life.
FVO continues over scenes of Felicity working at Dean & Deluca. FVO explains that she looked up and saw Ben walking down the street. We see Felicity smiling at Ben, but he ignores her and keeps walking. Felicity tells Sally that she is "a troublesome meddler"; she adds that Ben is still mad at her for rewriting his essay, and that she doesn't think he'll ever forgive her.
Elena's on hold with financial aid. When she hears a knock at her door, she stuffs a bunch of paperwork under her pillow before answering. Blair appears with a box, and she tries to get rid of him. He hands her a record that she's been looking for, and she's excited but admits that she doesn't have a record player. Blair reveals that he has one in the box, and tells her that he bought it used, so she shouldn't worry about the cost. Elena tells him that she really can't accept it. Blair theorizes that she doesn't like bald guys, and says that he might grow hair for her. Just then, someone picks up the phone, and Elena asks the person to hold. She tells Blair that she can't accept his gift because she doesn't know whether she's staying at school. Blair wonders what she's talking about, as she pushes him out the door. Elena promises to call him later.
Krakow sits down at a table with Julie, Felicity, and Elena. He's all excited because some alumnus is coming to speak to his film class, and that Krakow's film was selected to be shown. Felicity congratulates him. Krakow says he knows it's a long shot, but apparently last year a sophomore got a movie deal in a similar situation. Elena grouses, "Don't get your hopes up." Krakow comments on her attitude, and there's an awkward pause. Krakow asks Julie whether she'll write some music for his movie. She agrees, and says that she's proud of him. They kiss, and Krakow leaves to do some work. Felicity gives Julie a look, and Julie says she knows that kissing in public is "like a statement." Elena asks whether they've screwed yet. Felicity is shocked and then apologizes to Julie, who admits that they haven't, but adds that she likes him. Felicity smiles at her, but then her face falls when she sees Ben in line to get food. Julie asks, "So what's going on? Are you and Ben..." Felicity fills in, "Screwing? No. Talking? No." Felicity excuses herself from the table.
Felicity walks up to Ben and asks whether he's not talking to her. Ben says that he's talking to her right now. Felicity invites him to sit at their table, but Ben says he's getting his food to go, and takes off.
While they listen to "Up On The Roof" for no apparent reason, Felicity talks to Knoll about the Ben situation. Felicity thinks that before the paper thing happened, something was developing between the two of them. Knoll pretends to listen, but distractedly taps his fingers on his leg. Felicity worries that Ben is ignoring her, and asks for any advice. Knoll doesn't respond at first, but then says there's something he has to do. After a pause, Knoll says, "I'm going to draw..." He stops, and Felicity encourages him to go on. Knoll says that he's going to draw a comparison between what she's going through and something that happened to a friend. Felicity brightens at this. Knoll pauses for a while and then advises Felicity to go to Ben's apartment and say that she left something there, and while they're looking for it, they'll have a chance at a conversation. Felicity smiles and gives Knoll a hug, telling him, "You are such a good friend. I can't stand it." Knoll rolls his eyes and replies, "Yeah, me either."
Felicity walks into her room, only to be immediately assaulted by Meghan, asking if Felicity touched her box. Ah, the box. Felicity doesn't know what Meghan is talking about, but Meghan is all upset because her box moved, and calls it an invasion of privacy. Felicity wonders why their room is a double, since it's big enough to be two rooms, and has two doors. Hell, it's big enough to house a small family. Meghan tells her not to change the subject, but Felicity says that there wouldn't be a privacy issue if there were a wall. Meghan announces that she's taking her box with her. Felicity asks her to please do that, but Meghan says that reverse psychology won't work on her, and leaves. With the box.
In yet another RA meeting, Knoll learns that they are supposed to talk to their advisees about dorm graffiti. Marissa Ribisi points out that the singular of graffiti is "graffito," and urges everyone to use that in conversation. I find myself wishing that she were a regular on the show instead of Julie. She's far more interesting. Another RA bitches about all the stuff they are supposed to do in their job. Marissa says she feels like a one-woman psychiatric department, and thinks that there is one woman on her floor who's not bulimic. Yep, that sounds like a freshman dorm, all right. Another RA tells a story about some guy who keeps urinating in the sink. Knoll contributes that he told his "friend" to draw the line, but that the "friend" is having trouble. Everyone groans. Marissa advises him to tell his "friend" to "draw the line and stick with it." Knoll agrees.
Felicity shows up at the loft, claiming that she left a notebook there. Sean shows her his idea book, reminding her that his original idea book was stolen. Felicity asks whether Ben is there; Sean yells out for Ben, and then tries to explain his newest business idea to Felicity, who is clearly not interested. Ben arrives, and Felicity feeds him the notebook story. Ben looks for it under some papers. Felicity tries to start a conversation about adjusting to college, and how it makes you do crazy things. Ben asks what she's talking about. Felicity says she can't believe what she did. Ben looks disgusted that she brought it up again. Felicity thinks that she's grown up a lot in the past few weeks. Ben sarcastically tells her that she should feel good about that. Felicity drops the ruse and asks Ben whether he's going to be mad at her forever. Ben explains that he's not mad at her -- he's nothing. Ben continues to look for the imaginary notebook as Felicity stands there looking stunned. Finally, Felicity makes an excuse about another place where the notebook might be. Ben tells her that if he finds it, he'll bring it to class, and Felicity leaves.
Felicity knocks on Knoll's door and asks if he's busy. Knoll says that he's working on his website. Felicity asks why he has a web page, and Knoll says, "Too much free time. Not enough friends. Justifying owning your computer." Well, that's not why I have a website. I have it because I think everyone is interested in what I have to say. Judging by the traffic, I'm sadly mistaken. Anyway, Felicity tells Knoll about her disastrous trip to Ben's loft. Knoll stammers and then announces that he's drawing the line. He doesn't want to talk about her and Ben anymore, and he's not going to be her girlfriend. Felicity asks, "Were you ever going to be my girlfriend?" Knoll explains that he doesn't want to be the guy she comes to talk about that other guy. Felicity looks confused, and Knoll confesses that it bugs the hell out of him, so he's drawing the line. Felicity finally realizes that she can't talk about Ben with Knoll anymore. Knoll says that they can talk about other things, and asks Felicity whether she understands. Felicity doesn't answer, and gets up. Knoll tells her that she doesn't have to leave. Felicity tightly says that she doesn't want to cross the line. Once in the hallway, Felicity says that she'll talk to him later, but not about Ben.
Felicity immediately goes to see Julie, because she can't stand not to talk about Ben for five minutes. Hey, I've been there. Julie is on her way out the door to meet Krakow. Felicity asks Julie whether she'll be back soon. Julie says she doesn't know and asks whether Felicity needs her. Felicity says she doesn't, and then muses that Julie and Krakow have "a situation," where they like each other and want to spend time together. Yeah, it's called a relationship. Felicity says that she's jealous "in the best way." Julie says that Felicity is still her closest friend. Julie takes off with her guitar, leaving Felicity standing very alone.
Blair sees Elena looking at some paperwork in the hallway. A woman calls Elena into an office. Blair sees that it's the Financial Services office. Can I just say that Blair is not cute? He looks like an alien. Tracy is about a million times cuter.
Felicity knocks on Elena's door. Blair walks up and says that he just saw Elena in the financial aid office. Felicity wants to know why, and Blair says he thought Felicity might know. They agree that Elena has been acting pretty weird. Blair says that Elena keeps shutting him down. Felicity says that's been happening to her and Ben, because in Felicity's world, all things relate back to Ben. Blair acts interested, so they go to the cafeteria to talk about their problems. Felicity tells Blair that he could be a model. Blair returns the compliment, and wonders why Ben keeps turning her down. After the mutual compliments, Felicity tells Blair not to worry about Elena because lots of students have financial problems, and that it could be anything, like lost paperwork. Blair gives Felicity a look and then asks Felicity whether she works in the admissions office. Felicity says that she can't look in Elena's file because she doesn't want to be a buttinsky. Blair confesses that Elena told him that she might have to leave, and that it seems serious. Felicity has had a lot of trouble in the past. Blair won't ask her to read Elena's file, and Felicity is relieved, because she thinks that's crossing a line. Awkward pause. Blair asks Felicity to look in Elena's file. Felicity doesn't respond.
As thunder crashes outside, Felicity rolls over in her sleep to find Meghan staring at her. Meghan once again accuses Felicity of looking in her box, or even just picking it up to shake it. Felicity denies the accusations, and asks what's in there. Meghan says that Felicity is curious. Felicity says that she's only curious because Meghan keeps bringing it up. Meghan asks again whether Felicity went through it. Felicity stands up and wonders what would happen if she did see "all [her] naked pictures or drugs or whatever." Meghan gets all huffy and leaves, vowing to buy a fingerprint kit. Felicity looks after her incredulously.
Felicity totally busts into Knoll's room in the middle of the night, demanding to know what right he has to draw the line. Knoll sleepily asks whether Felicity is going to force him to talk about Ben. Felicity asks whether Knoll is happy with "a conditional friendship," and accuses him of setting boundaries in their conversations. Knoll clarifies that he's setting one boundary. Felicity realizes that it's because he has feelings for her. Knoll claims that he's happy to be friends with her as long as it's not all about Ben. Felicity throws Hannah in his face. Knoll admits that he still has a long-distance girlfriend, but it's complicated, since he has feelings for Felicity. Felicity wonders when it became all about Ben, and wants to know how Knoll can insist that he's fine and still have feelings for her. Knoll points out that she's doing the same thing to Ben, because she was fine being friends, and still "doing his homework for him and following him around like some lovesick schoolgirl." Felicity screeches, "You know what? Maybe I am a lovesick schoolgirl." What a terrible comeback. I hate to say it, but Knoll is totally right. Felicity stomps out.
Blair and Ben test some sort of game that Sean invented, while Sean tries to explain the rules. Ben asks whether Blair has talked to Elena. Blair says that Felicity is helping him out. Ben rolls his eyes over Felicity. Blair asks what's wrong, and points out that Felicity pushes Ben's buttons. Sean still blathers about the rules. Blair says that Ben might think Felicity is trouble, but she's got a good heart and Blair likes her. Ben tosses a game piece, and Sean calls for overtime, but Ben and Blair have had enough.
In another RA meeting, Marissa says that she thinks one of her advisees is running a sex line from her room, because there is "constant exaggerated moaning" coming from the room. At first, Marissa thought that she was "a real self-satisfier," but now she thinks differently. Knoll brings up his "friend" again, saying that he drew the line. Marissa asks what happened. Knoll says that the girl got pissed off, so his "friend" is thinking about going back and redrawing the line. Everyone is upset about that idea. Marissa explains that would risk the girl drawing her own line, and that his "friend" needs to stick with the first line.
Julie plays guitar while Krakow listens. Julie finishes and Krakow tells her that the music is fantastic. Julie looks pleased and launches into another piece she has written for a different scene in the movie. Krakow watches her play, then leans forward and kisses her. Julie manages to keep playing while he is kissing her. Finally, she puts down the guitar and lays back and Krakow gets on top of her. He keeps trying to put his hand up her shirt, but she keeps grabbing his hand and moving it. Things begin to get a little more intense, and Julie stops Krakow, explaining that she wants to go slow. Krakow agrees and backs off.
Felicity walks down the street in slow motion, and enters a building. She walks down the hall while reading a piece of paper, then encounters Blair and shows him the paper.
Elena is in her dorm room packing to leave when Blair enters, saying that he wanted to see her before she left school forever and he never saw her again. Elena closes the door and apologizes for not telling him what's going on. She explains that she's angry with her father for not paying her tuition bill and that now her father is saying that he's not sure he even wants her to go to college. Blair interrupts her and confesses that he knows that Elena's scholarship didn't go through and that her dad doesn't make enough money to help. Elena looks shocked, then upset. After an awkward silence, Blair says that he has something for her, and hands her the piece of paper he got from Felicity earlier. Blair explains that there are very specific scholarships out there, and he has found one that Elena qualifies for. Elena reads that the scholarship is designated for an African-American woman, pre-med, one-parent family, moderate to low-income, attending a New York college. Blair explains that he called the woman giving the scholarship and that the money was not awarded this year. Elena repeats, "Moderate to low-income family with one parent." Blair exhorts her to call the scholarship woman, and then admits that he asked someone to check Elena's file, so he knows that she qualifies. Elena wants to know who checked the file, but Blair gets all defensive, saying that Elena wouldn't tell him anything about what was wrong. Elena demands to know who it was, and Blair admits that it was Felicity, but that she did it as a favor to him. Elena grabs her coat and leaves, slamming the door.
Felicity is working at Dean & Deluca. Knoll walks in and tells her that he's there to redraw the line. Felicity says that he can't do that because the line is "a symptom of some fundamental discord." Knoll protests, but Felicity says that he was right, and that she shouldn't talk to him about Ben. Knoll shows his lack of spine by saying that Felicity can talk to him about anything except sex. Felicity looks shocked but keeps wiping down tables, trying to ignore him. Knoll starts yelling that Felicity can never talk to him about having sex with Ben, like pipe down, Knoll! Felicity says that she's going to have to draw the line. Knoll asks where her line is, but before Felicity can answer, Elena walks in and starts yelling at Felicity for looking in her file, saying that Felicity had no right to do that. Felicity tries to protest. Elena starts babbling that she got a full scholarship to a private high school only because she is poor and black. Felicity points out that Elena is also smart. Elena replies that it didn't matter, and that every student knew why she was there. The scholarship that Elena had for college was based on merit, and she doesn't want Felicity's "handout." Felicity looks downtrodden. Elena gives her the "Thanks, but no thanks" speech and stomps out. Felicity brushes past Knoll as he tries to get her back into their conversation.
Another RA meeting. There were more RA meetings in this episode than ever again in all the other episodes combined. I kind of miss them. Anyway, they are discussing how the hallways aren't supposed to be used as bowling alleys when Knoll pipes up again about how his "friend" redrew the line. The other RAs drop the façade and ask Knoll about his relationship, advising him to be honest with the girl, because all he can do is be a good friend, and let whatever may happen, happen. Knoll asks whether they all knew that it was about him all along, and they all say that they did.
Krakow and Julie head to Julie's room after a night out, clearly the better (or worse) for alcohol. Julie starts babbling about how fun their night was as Krakow starts kissing her and leading her into her room, closing the door.
Elena is in her room, packing up. Knoll knocks and enters. Elena looks disgusted with him. Knoll stammers out something about Elena claiming not to have as much money as Felicity or her friends. Elena sarcastically replies that her "big fat secret" is out. Knoll explains that he got a small scholarship, and applied for tons of grants, and took out a bunch of loans to be able to afford college. His point is that he knew that he would never be judged for how he got through college, but that he would be judged if he didn't go at all. Elena complains that he's giving her a speech. Knoll replies that no one cares how you pay for school, and that there are a lot of people who would kill to get into their college, and that they would all hate Elena right now. Knoll finishes, "But if there were a scholarship for white, Irish Catholic kids with preppy clothes and web pages, I'd grab it. No humility. No shame." He leaves, and Elena smiles. Later, Elena plays the record that Blair gave her. She thinks for a while, then reaches into her garbage can and pulls out the paper about the scholarship, and starts filling it out.
Felicity is getting food in the cafeteria when Elena approaches her. Elena explains that she thought it would be dumb to turn down the scholarship without finding out more about it. Felicity agrees. Elena says that she talked to the woman who provides the scholarship, and was offered "full tuition, no terms." Felicity is happy for Elena, but Elena adds that she wanted to add a term -- she wanted to pay the money back. The woman refused. Instead, the woman said that when Elena becomes a doctor, she has to offer the same scholarship to someone else. Felicity asks whether Elena is okay with that; Elena says that she is, and thanks Felicity. Elena walks off. Ben approaches and tells Felicity that Blair told him about Elena, and that it was really cool of Felicity to help out. Felicity thanks him; they sit down at a table and start talking.
Julie folds her clothes in her room. Felicity knocks and enters, asking whether Julie is okay, because she wasn't in class. Julie acts distant and changes the subject, asking Felicity to return a sweater she borrowed. Felicity says she'll return it, and tries again to ask whether Julie is okay. Julie snaps at her, so Felicity asks for a CD that Julie borrowed. When Felicity goes to get it, she notices that Julie's bedspread is crammed into her garbage can. Julie notices that Felicity sees it. Concerned, Felicity asks what's going on. Julie says that she and Krakow came back to her room last night. Felicity pauses and asks whether Julie slept with him. Julie says that Krakow was "pretty aggressive," and just rolled over and fell asleep when he was finished. Felicity ventures, "Julie...he didn't..." Julie won't meet Felicity's eyes as she says that she sat in the chair all night, and she doesn't know why she was so surprised. Felicity clarifies, "But you didn't want to...have sex with him?" Julie quietly says, "No." Felicity asks whether she told Krakow that, and Julie nods sadly. Fade to black and the words "To Be Continued" come up on the screen.
