Delia asks her dad when he's going to get her a Miners cap. Treat tells her that her head will be adorned in crimson and gold at the appointed time. Delia's ride honks from outside, and Treat walks her out. As he's walking back inside, he notices someone fixing something on Nina's roof. He asks the guy on the ladder if he needs help. The guy says, "No, no, just installing some heat tape -- should have been done months ago." Treat says he doesn't know what heat tape is, but he doesn't do much maintenance himself. He asks the guy if he should consider heat tape, and wants to know what the guy charges. He gives Treat one of those "in a minute" hand gestures, climbs down off the ladder, and plants a big old kiss on Nina, who's just walked outside. Oh, so it's Nina's absent husband. He's already on my nerves. Treat just stares as they make out a little bit; then Nina notices him. "Oh, Andy, hi! I see you've met Carl." Andy says he hasn't, actually. Carl introduces himself. Andy tells him it's nice to meet him, and to please disregard his last question. Carl says, "I was trying to figure out what kind of discount to give you, since you're a neighbor and all." Treat explains to Nina that he asked Carl to work on his gutters, and Nina pouts, "Hands off, Andy. He's not home that often, and I've got a long list of things he needs to finish." Puke.

Carl says he has to run inside for something, and Nina and Andy are left alone in the yard. Nina says she should have told Andy that Carl would be arriving, but she was so excited that she didn't want to jinx it by talking about it. They both look kind of uncomfortable, and it's beyond me why Nina's required to tell Andy every detail of her personal life, but whatever. Treat says that she and Sam must be very happy that Carl's home. She is, and she says that she should go. She awkwardly turns to go inside, and Treat looks after her wistfully. Oh, man. Treat's in LOOOOOVE. I hate it.

Cut to the high school, in class. The teacher asks a question. Nobody answers, until Colin raises his hand. He can't get any kind of coherent sentence out, and stutters along for a while until the teacher tells him it's all right, and asks if anyone else knows the answer. Colin tells her to give him a second, that he did the reading. He tries again, struggling to say something -- anything, Colin, damn! -- until the bell rings. The teacher reminds the class about their test on Thursday. Colin tries to make a quick getaway, but the teacher stops him and tells him that he's doing just fine, and that he's just expected to observe for now. Colin: "Yeah, well, I knew the answer." Poor Colin. He's not having a very good, uh, entire life.

Ephram catches up to Colin on the stairs and says, "Well, that sucked." Colin says that he doesn't even know what he's doing in school, that he's just wasting everybody's time. Ephram says that the teacher is just trying to make it easier for him, and Colin smarts back, "Yeah? Well, she's NOT." Whoa, there, angry bunny. Colin tells Ephram that everyone treats him like a freak, and "why shouldn't they? I can't even remember my own locker combination if it's not written down on a piece of paper." He pulls his locker combination out of his pocket. This is very funny to me, for some reason. I mean, I know it's not, but it made me laugh. Ephram suggests that Colin tattoo stuff all over his body, like the guy in Memento. Heh. Colin doesn't find this amusing. Ephram acknowledges that he's not helping much. Colin says, "Maybe you could help -- help me study for the test. Maybe she'll see that I can actually do the work..." Ephram: "So she can treat you like crap again?" Colin: "Exactly. See? It gives me something to look forward to." Yay! Colin and Ephram are cute together. I bet Colin and Bright never had banter this good. Ephram says he's not exactly acing the class, either, and Colin tells him that it's all relative. Aw.

Crap. Buzzkill Amy butts in. "Hey, Colin! Hey, Ephram." She asks Colin if she can talk to him for a second...ALONE. Whatever. Suddenly, two of her friends run up, spazzing about how she and Colin "got Homecoming King and Queen!!!!!!" Ew. Colin asks how they "won." Amy's friend Super-Bitch says that Colin totally pulled the sympathy vote, but who cares, because he and Amy are THE BOMB!!! I wish I had a bomb. Colin snarks, "Hear that, Ephram? We're the bomb." Ephram congratulates them.

Diner. Patch Abbott asks Treat if he's met Carl yet. Treat says he has. Patch says that Carl is like "Everwood's version of Tom Cruise." Just as I thought -- Carl is, indeed, Satan's minion. Oh, and a Scientologist, I guess. Patch says he supposes that certain women are attracted to Carl's type -- rugged, handsome, young... Treat says, "Why don't you ask him out, Harold?" Hee. Yeah, Harold. Why don't you just go ahead and MARRY him, then? It's weird seeing Treat and Patch eat lunch together.

Carl is at the diner, too, eating lunch with Nina. Patch leans over and asks him if he's looking forward to the "big game." Carl says he wouldn't miss it. Patch informs us that Carl won the district championship back in '84. Carl says he had a little help. Patch calls it "the most miraculous sporting moment he's ever seen, BAR NONE." Treat wants to know about it. Carl acts like he doesn't want to, but he totally does. You know the type. The obnoxious kind. He "reluctantly" "agrees" to tell the story: The team was down by four with fifty-eight seconds to go, but Carl just knew they were going to win. He stands up and starts to act it out: "...off a rebound, I drive to the baseline, and get the ball to Jackson Lang. He's wide open!" Patch Abbott: "Jackson couldn't hit the ocean from a rowboat." Carl: "Unfortunately, Jackson couldn't hit the ocean from a rowboat." Carl continues with his story: Jackson shoots, misses; Carl catches the rebound, and shoots. Patch Abbott: "Nothin' but net." Carl: "Nothin' but net." God. We get it. You've heard the story before. Carl keeps on telling the story, and Patch keeps on saying what Carl's going to say before he says it. I refuse to continue transcribing it, too, because Carl is a total tool and I can't understand why Patch loves him so much. We all know what happens, anyway: Carl shoots again to tie the game, the game goes to OT, and then Carl shoots AGAIN to win the game with one second left in overtime. Ball hog, much? The entire diner claps. Patch Abbott beams. Treat laughs heartily. I throw up on my clean floor. Carl says some other crap to Nina about how she was there, too, and hugs her. She tells him she missed him, and the scene blessedly ends.

Treat's office. He's telling Colin and his mom how great Colin's progress has been. He says that the right side weakness is subsiding. Colin says to tell that to his right side. Treat says that this is where medicine becomes more of an art than a science, and that Colin's brain has been able to re-route the pathways he uses for walking and talking. He says he isn't sure what repairs will take place . Colin says, "You're supposed to be the best there is, and you can't tell me when I'm supposed to get better?" Colin's mother excuses this assy behavior by saying that Colin is "a little frustrated." I'll say. Didn't his Mama teach him how to ackrite in front of adults? Treat asks Colin how his moods have been lately. Colin says they're fine. Mommy Hart says that he wasn't laughing much at first. Colin repeats that his moods have been fine. Uh huh. If by "fine" you mean "bitchy and hateful." Treat says Colin has to go back to Denver for another check-up. Colin doesn't wanna. Treat says that since he was released from the hospital so early, and is even back in school -- which is unusual for someone in Colin's position -- the trips to Denver are non-negotiable. Colin rolls his eyes out of his head, and sighs heavily. Treat asks Colin for a minute alone with his mom.

"Is there a problem?" asks Mommy Hart expectantly. Treat tells her that "Ephram says" school is too much for Colin right now. Ephram says? He never said that. Treat is a big fat fatty liar! He says it's a whole lot for Colin to handle. Mommy Hart compares Colin's severe brain injury, which nearly killed him, to the same kind of adjustment he'd have to make if the family moved to another state and Colin had to start a new school. Pardon? When did the words "comatose" and "new kid" become interchangeable? Oh, right. Never. Treat calls her out by saying that the differences between the two scenarios are "profound." Thank God somebody has some sense in this room. Mommy Hart insists that Colin needs to get on with his life. Treat clearly doesn't agree, but what can you do? She is Colin's mom, even if she's a permissive stupidhead. Treat says, "Okay. We'll see you in two weeks." Commercial.

High school gym. A teacher is showing the homecoming court how to present themselves at the big game. Colin's taking notes. Bright walks by in his cute red basketball uniform and tells Colin, "Don't forget to write down the part about how much this whole thing sucks." It's so funny, even Amy laughs. Bright invites Colin to a little get-together that night. Something about an X-Box and a hottie stepmom. I don't know; sometimes Bright mumbles. It must run in the Abbott family, because sometimes Amy sounds like Chris Kattan's "Jackpot" character on SNL: "Ephram, I really need to tell you something important. Allah looby yaskalah daskalah maskalah foofoo." Hee. I just cracked myself up. Colin says he can't go. As Bright is trying to get Colin out of what he thinks is therapy, Ephram arrives to pick him up. Colin says that he and Ephram are going to study together for their history test. Amy tries to invite herself, but Colin totally shafts her. He and Ephram leave, and Bright and Amy realize they're going to have to come up with another diabolical plan to make Colin love them again.

Nina walks Carl up to an empty storefront, covering his eyes. She guides Carl inside, tripping and giggling, while Sam holds the door. Nina asks Carl if he's ready. He says she's scaring him, and wonders if they're in a meat locker. Huh? She says, "You want me to give you a tour?" Carl says, "Only if you keep your hand there." Ew. And, what? Her hand is on his stomach. Nina uncovers Carl's eyes, and we see a big office space, with a counter Nina says can be for "the checkout...and the cash register." She describes where all the state-of-the-art outdoor gear will go, where the ski equipment will be, et cetera. She's bought him a place to have a store. Aw, that would be really sweet, Nina, if your husband didn't SUCK. He asks her how she got the money. She used her surrogacy money and her savings, and she's so excited because if they do this, Carl can be in Everwood with her and Sam. Carl tricks her into thinking he's excited, too, until he finds out she still has the $20,000 for the deposit. He says, "I'm just thinkin'...what if we got a bigger place? With a showroom...a new kind of sporting and outdoors store!" Nina's smile begins to fade. She tells Carl they don't have enough money for that. Carl says they could keep the money she already has, invest it, blah blah -- basically undermining Nina's plan for his own selfish gain. Nina argues that they could "make this happen now." Carl says, "Of course we could. Just not the best possible way." Man alive. If my husband pulled that shit on me, I'd knock him into the middle of week. Then I'd do it again on Thursday. Nina reminds Carl that his plan could be years away, and says that Sam needs him now. Carl says that Sam seems fine to him. Yes, I'm sure he seems fine for the two seconds you spend with him a year. Carl says that they have to plan this out; this is their shot. Nina says, "No, this is our shot at being together. If this was a shack, and we sold just one soccer ball a year, I would love it because you would be here." Break my heart, Nina, why don't you? Sam runs up, and Carl uses his son to avoid having to talk to Nina some more. He says, "How about a sundae?" Sam wants a sundae. Carl says they can talk about it some more while they have ice cream. I hate Carl.

Basketball practice. Coach Van Gundy tells the boys to hit the showers, but calls Bright over to see him first. He tells Bright they need to talk. Van Gundy tells Bright that he's sympathetic about all that he's been through, but that his game is "suspect." Bright says he knows. Van Gundy says he can't let him start. Bright says that's not fair. Van Gundy: "You're forcing your shots, you're not playing within our offense, you've been turning the ball over way too much." Then he tells Bright to put some mustard on that pass, and Bright chokes the living shit out of him and goes to play for the Knicks. Wait, that was the other Sprewell. Anyway, Bright says that he just needs to get his rhythm back "without -- I just need to find my rhythm." Van Gundy looks away. He says, "We all miss Colin. He was a good player with a lot of heart, but he's not playing this year...and right now you're throwing us off. You wanna keep talking about this?" Bright says he doesn't. Van Gundy leaves, and Bright's left alone in the gym. So sad.

Brown house. Ephram and Colin are studying. Ephram pulls another post-it note off his fancy-ass Titanium PowerBook. He tells Colin that it's his dad's idea of being clever. "Matthew Lansing. That sound like the name of a good piano teacher?" Colin says he has no idea. Ephram explains to Colin that the way they can learn the history dates is to make a list of the events in chronological order, memorize the list, and then visualize it. He has on a black zip-up jacket that says "Brooklyn" on it. I want it. No, I want him in it. No, I want the jacket more. Cute clothes or cute boys? It's a weighty decision. Colin says it's a shame Ephram hasn't ever been in a coma, because he would have done great in rehab. Ephram tells Colin to copy down the dates from 1868-1900. Colin hesitates, and Ephram asks him if he needs to take a break. Colin says they haven't done anything yet. Ephram says the deal is, they'll work for fifteen minutes, and then reward themselves with cold pizza. Colin thinks this is a good plan.

Treat yells for Ephram from outside. He gets up and tells Colin he'll be right back, and to start writing down the dates. Ephram goes outside, where Treat says he needs him to hand him things while he's on the ladder. Ephram: "You sure that's wise?" Treat: "Just humor me." Ephram yells to Colin that he'll be right there, and Treat expresses his surprise that Colin's at their house. He asks Ephram how Colin's doing, and Ephram says, "I'm his friend, not his shrink." Ah, more pleasant father and son repartee. Ephram says they're studying for a test, and Treat is incredulous that Colin is taking a test at all. He tells Ephram that it's a bad idea, and will just frustrate him. Ephram says, "He asked me to help him." Treat says helping him study for a test won't do any good, since he shouldn't even be in school. Ephram says that everybody has nothing but bad news for Colin, and if he wants to take a stupid test, he's going to help him. Ephram is the sweetest, isn't he? Treat sort of agrees, and climbs the ladder.

Ephram returns to the study table to find that Colin has written about half a sentence. Uh-oh. Reading bad. Writing bad. Colin give up. Ephram pretends he doesn't notice, and A Mournful Guitar Of Shameful Illiteracy plays in the background.

Ooh, the Osbournes on the Pepsi Twist commercial! I love those crazy kids.

History class. The teacher hands back their tests. Ephram got a C+. The teacher tells him if he keeps going like he is, he can give average a run for its money. Nice. She hands Colin his test. It's an A. Oh, man. Ephram tells Colin that time Colin will have to help him out. Colin doesn't buy it. He asks Ephram to check his test against his own. Ephram looks at Colin's test; it's filled with scratch-outs and unintelligible scribbles. Poor Colin. The second page is completely blank. Ephram pretends it's great. He hands Colin's test back to him and says, "Okay. I'm an idiot." I love that boy.

Abbott House. Patch Abbott tells Bright to hurry up, because the game starts in less than an hour. Bright says he doesn't think they care what time "non-playing players" get there. Patch says that the bench is an integral part of the team. Bright: "Yeah, the part that the other team makes fun of." Heh. Patch says Bright will get just as many cheers if he scores coming off the bench as he would if he started. Bright says ever since Colin's been gone, he's sucked. He says the only way he starts is if Colin is playing, and if not, Bright's on the bench. Patch sighs. He asks Bright if he misses Colin. Bright says, "We were like our own team within a team -- Michael and Scottie. Except, shorter. And whiter." Hee! Patch says, "Well, if Michael fouled out, Scottie didn't just stop playing, did he?" Bright says he guesses not. Patch tells Bright that it's okay for him to be good without Colin. Bright says things will be a lot better as soon as Colin just gets back to his old self. Patch Abbott, who knows this is never going to happen, ever, but doesn't want to upset his son before the big game, just nods. "Grab your coat, let's go. Come on!"

Brown House Of Deception And Tomfoolery. Treat sneaks into the kitchen with a new post-it note. He's about to put it in Ephram's bag, but Delia busts him. He hides the note in his pocket. Delia says she wants some milk, and maybe a cookie. Or two. Cutie. Treat reminds her that she's going to eat at the game, and Delia says that she might not eat until halftime, and wants to be "fully stocked." She notices the note in Treat's front pocket, and says, "Another piano teacher?" Treat complains that he can't get Ephram to call even one of the piano teachers. Delia asks, "Why don't you just make him do it?" Treat replies that kids resent it when parents do that. Delia says, "Mom would have just yelled at him." Treat: "No way." Delia nods. Yes, way, Treat. He says, "Ephram, really?" Delia says she did it all the time. Treat asks her if their mom yelled at her. Delia says, "Not as much, but I'm easier to handle." This kid is the shit, is she not? Delia offers her dad a cookie, and they share a cute little moment. I'm such a sucker.

Nina's getting Sam ready to go to the game. She says to Carl, "I didn't ask you to commit to anything tonight, I just think we should talk about it before you leave." Carl is wearing his high school letter jacket. Oh, man, he's That Guy, isn't he? Loser. He says they did talk about it. Nina says, "So that's just it. You don't want the store?" Carl says he DOES want the store, he just wants to wait until they can "really do it." Ugh. Nina says she's not asking him if he wants the store two years from now; she's asking if he wants it now. Carl says he doesn't think that now is the right time, because he's becoming such a super-fantastic software salesman. Nina reminds him that he never wanted to be a traveling salesman in the first place, and that it was supposed to be temporary. Carl shouts, "I never thought I'd be this GOOD AT IT!" Shut up, Carl. Nina tells Sam to go upstairs to find his sweater. She gets up in Carl's grill. Good for you, Nina! She says she doesn't know how much longer she can raise Sam by herself. She says she misses him like he was at war, or in a foreign country, only he's not. Because this is his choice, and he could be home if he wanted to. Carl says they made a deal when they got married. Nina argues that they didn't have Sam then, and they didn't know the effects this would have on him. Carl says this isn't about Sam, this is about them. No, it's about you, jackass. He turns it around on Nina by saying that she didn't want to leave Everwood, so he went out and tried to make a living for them. Nina says that they're right where they were six years ago. Carl says, "You mean, I'm right where I was six years ago, is that what you mean?" Nina tries to tell him that she's still in love with him, six years ago or not. Carl yells some more about how he's too good for Everwood, because he's the guy everyone else wanted to be, and the one who was supposed to make something of himself. Nina says, "Well, maybe you're not. And what's so wrong with that?" I can tell you lots of things wrong with this, Nina. For one, your husband is a first-rate dicksmack, and he's still wearing his high school letter jacket, for God's sake. Let him GO. They scream some more -- blah blah, Carl wanted to move to Phoenix, Nina didn't want them to, Nina says that's not true, and so forth. Yelling, screaming, shouting, sadness. Carl says, "You only hear what you want to hear. I'm only who you want me to be!" Nina: "You're not ANYTHING that I want you to be! Because you're NEVER! HERE!" She starts to cry. Carl stares for a second, then says, "Oh! We've got to get to the game!" You have GOT to be kidding me. If I knew a foreign language, I would curse him in it. What a sack of shit this guy is.

The Big Game. There's a huge crowd. The announcer introduces "your Peak County Miners!" Amy's holding the banner that they run through, and looking up into the bleachers. For whom, I don't know. Her parents, maybe? Her conscience? Delia cheers real loud and waves a giant foam finger. Oh, ha! Patch Abbott has on the ugliest outfit I've ever had the misfortune to come across. It consists of a bright yellow mock turtleneck underneath a red, green, and mustard tartan plaid sweater. HIDEOUS. He cheers, "Let's go, Miners! Let's go, Miners!" The team huddles up as Amy takes the floor with her dance team. Their outfits -- one-shouldered red tops, tight black pants, sparkly gold fingerless elbow gloves, and jazz shoes -- aren't much better than Patch's. Wow. Who's their choreographer, Sparky Polastri? This routine is terrible. Amy keeps looking into the crowd as she "dances." Spirit fingers!

Coach Van Gundy gives his team last-minute directions. Colin gets up and walks out just as the game begins. Shots of cheerleaders, the crowd, the game, until we see the scoreboard: Home, 33. Guests, 44. One minute left in the first half. Amy and Bright both pay more attention to the crowd than to the game. Bright finds Ephram, and gets his attention. Treat says, "Ephram, why is the Abbott kid waving at you?" Heh. Ephram says he's not. Bright then shouts, "Yo, Brown! Get over here!" Ephram gets up and tells his dad, "He probably needs help counting the points." He makes his way through the cheering crowd to the bench. Bright asks him where Colin is. Ephram says he has no idea. Bright says, "You're like his best friend now, you don't know where he is?" Ephram: "You're his best friend, don't you know where he is?" Bright tells Ephram to just go find him, because the "homecoming thing" starts at the half. Ephram tells Bright to go find Colin himself, and Bright says he can't, because he's on the team. Ephram snarks, "Oh, is that what they call this wooden plank?" Bright glares. He tells Ephram that Colin has to be around here somewhere, and that Ephram has to find him or Amy will freak out. Ephram goes, because he still loooooves her.

Ephram finds Colin in his truck in the parking lot. Note to Ephram: Wear jacket more often. Colorado is cold. Colin switches off the interior light as Ephram approaches the truck. He gets in, and asks Colin if he's all right. Colin says he's fine. Ephram says, "Well, your big moment is minutes away." Colin says it's not his moment. They gaze into one another's eyes. Yes, okay, it's sort of a HoYay! moment. Colin starts telling Ephram a story about another "TBI" in rehab, named Bob. He explains that "TBI" means "Traumatic Brain Injury" patient. Bob insists that everyone call him "Bob the Second," because he's not the same person he used to be. He decided it would be easier on his friends and family just to call him "Bob the Second" instead of a whole new name. Colin says, "I hate it." Ephram says they should get back inside. Colin keeps talking. He says he remembers a few things, but not from last year; he remembers details about his childhood. He says, "When I was five, we had this apartment. They had one of those trash chutes where you set your garbage down, out in the hallway? My mom used to let me put the trash in. For days after I got home, I looked for that trash chute. I couldn't find it. I didn't know if I had made it up, or if I had dreamed it." Oh, sweet Colin. I don't love you as much as I love Ephram, but you're getting there, honey. Ephram tells Colin it's going to get better. Colin says nobody knows that. Ephram asks him to come back inside, do the homecoming thing, then they can go hang out somewhere. Colin says, "I can't find the list." Without it, he won't know what to do at the ceremony. Ephram suggests that Amy can help him. Colin says, "I don't WANT help." Ephram doesn't know what to say, so he says, "Okay." Colin says that the list was in his pocket, but he lost it, so he came outside to look for it in the truck. Ephram says, "We'll find it," and goes to turn the light on. Colin says, "Don't!" It's too late; the light's on, and Ephram sees that Colin's hand is cut and bleeding. The driver's side window is shattered. Man. Colin says, "It was locked. I couldn't get in." Ephram looks more closely at the hand. He gets out of the truck, saying, "I'll get my dad." That's my boyfriend.

Good Lord, it's hot in this house. Seventy degrees in February. Welcome to Texas! You know what helps when it's hot and you're recapping? Beer. Anyway. Back from commercial, the announcer welcomes everyone to the opening game of the Miners basketball season. The crowd cheers. He keeps talking, and Amy asks Bright where the hell Colin is. Bright says they'll find him. The announcer goes on, "I now have the honor of presenting to you the Homecoming King and Queen, and their court, elected by their peers." Amy looks like she might cry. The court begins walking onto the stage. The announcer says he thinks the courage of this year's couple should be an example to them all. Amy is still standing there alone when he says, "I am proud to present to you...Amy Abbott and Colin Hart!" Patch Abbott stands and cheers the loudest. Aw. Still no Colin. Amy stands, frozen. The crowd quiets, and she can't move. Suddenly...suddenly! My Hero Bright Abbott steps up behind her and takes her arm. I have a little something in my eye. Patch smiles proudly. Amy asks her brother what he's doing. "Standing in," he says. Amy says, "If we go up there without Colin..." Bright tells her it's okay. "We're in this together." They walk up to the stage together. The crowd goes wild, and Amy is crowned. So, it's illegal to have a crush on every single person on this show, right?

Ephram, Colin, and Treat are in the school nurse's office. Colin makes up some cockamamie story about how he broke the window. He says, "I was jimmying the lock, and the window just...shattered." Treat: "Huh, most windows have shatter-proof glass these days." Heh. Colin says it's a good thing Ephram "was out taking a stroll in the parking lot." Ephram rolls his eyes. Treat jokes that he hopes Ephram isn't taking up smoking. Ephram says he was just out for some air. Treat says Colin's all fixed up, and to stop by his office the day for another look. Colin says, "Little easier than the last time you stitched me up, huh?" He says he should get back to "his Queen" so she doesn't think "her King" has been kidnapped. Ick. I know he wasn't serious.

After Colin leaves, Treat asks Ephram, "So what happened, really?" Ephram won't tell. Treat tells Ephram that sometimes patients like Colin can act unpredictably sometimes, and inquires as to his moods. Ephram tells his dad that Colin isn't his patient. Treat says, "You're right. Let's get back to the game." Ephram says he'll meet them in the parking lot afterwards, that basketball's not really his thing. Treat makes sure Ephram's okay, then goes back to the game. Ephram sits sadly in the nurse's office, missing his recapper girlfriend.

Back at the game, the Miners are still losing. The other team is scoring all over them. Van Gundy shakes his head and calls for a timeout. Patch Abbott holds up his foam finger and yells, "Booooo! Bad call!" Hee. Coach Van Gundy tells Bright to get in the game. Yay! Patch Abbott: "Bright Abbott, he's our man! Let's give him, a great big hand!" Bright inbounds the ball, then takes it up the court. Mmm mmm, I love a point guard. He sets up and takes the shot. Whoosh! Nothin' but net. When the ball bounces back, we see it's just Bright and Patch Abbott alone in the gym, messing around. Patch shoots, and the scoreboard says that the Miners still lost. Bright trash-talks his dad a little bit, and Patch says, "Not bad for an old man, huh?" Bright: "I was gonna say nerd, but..." Patch tells Bright that he made him proud tonight. Bright thinks his dad is talking about the game. Patch says, "I mean what you did for your little sister." Bright shrugs it off. "What was I going to do?" He shoots again. Nice touch. Patch asks him how it was being back out on the court again. Bright says it felt good, being able to get into the game without Colin. He asks his dad if that's messed up. Patch says of course not. He says it's okay to still miss him, too. Bright says he wants to punch Colin for what he did to Amy. Patch tells him it's not Colin's fault, or Amy's, or his. He says that things have changed, and that Bright and Amy are going to have to figure it out. They play a little more, and then walk out of the gym together. Sweet. Nice scene.

Feeny House Of Hate. Nina brings Sam his breakfast. He says he wants to draw more pictures for Daddy. Nina says he can when he's done. She goes back to cooking. Carl walks in behind her and tells her he wishes he had another day. Nina nods coolly. Carl puts his arms around her and says he'll be back as soon as he can. Nina doesn't respond, as well she shouldn't. He says, "We'll open that store, and I'll be here full-time. You know that, right?" Nina turns to face him. She says, "I never lost faith in you, Carl. I just miss you more every day that you're gone. It aches. Do you still need me that way?" Carl fakes, "Of course I do." He kisses her. I hate him.

Schoolhouse. Amy and Colin are in the hall, leaning against the lockers. She asks him how his hand is. Colin says it's just "scratched." Yeah. Amy says she was really worried. Colin apologizes. Amy says that it's not his fault he was hurt. She looks at him meaningfully. Luckily, Ephram breaks up this little scene. Colin says, "Ephram, hey! Your dad was awesome last night. I was just telling Amy how he stitched me up in no time. I appreciate what you did for me too." Ephram nods and says, "No worries." Colin leaves to "blow something up in chem class," leaving Ephram and Amy alone. She tells Ephram that she should thank him, too. Ephram says all he did was take Colin to the nurse's office and get his dad. Amy says it's just weird to think that Colin could hurt himself like that. Ephram insists that it was just an accident, and Colin is fine enough that the "King and Queen" can continue their reign. Amy sighs, "All of that stuff is so dumb." Ephram asks what she's talking about. She says, "Come on, it's the twenty-first century." Ephram counters, "It's tradition. People like traditions. It makes them feel safe...to think that some things don't change." *MELTY HEARTS AND UNICORNS!!!* Also, when Ephram walks away, we're gifted with a shot of his nice little ass. Thanks, directors! This is the best scene ever!

When Ephram arrives home from school, Treat is waiting for him on the front porch. Ephram says he's going to his room to study. Treat stops him. "Nope. Plans have changed." Ephram says he's not in the mood to work on their father-son communication skills. Treat says he isn't, either, "so this'll be a one-way conversation. Your new piano teacher is waiting for you in the living room, and I want you to go in there, sit down, and get reacquainted with that instrument." Ephram tries to interrupt. Treat: "Nah ah ah! One-way. He's Juilliard-educated and lives halfway between here and Denver. He called your old teacher and, based upon that conversation, plus a few additional bucks I decided to throw in, he has agreed to drive here once a week. You have a gift, and you have been letting it atrophy, and I'm not going to stand by and let it happen anymore." Ephram asks his dad what gives him the right to lecture him about "gifts," when he left his in New York. Treat says this conversation isn't about him, and that Ephram is too young to be solely responsible for his talent. He says, "If I can help you without hurting you, I'm gonna do that. That's what fathers do...I think." Aw. Treat goes on to say that if Ephram wants to quit when he gets older, that's his decision, but he hopes that doesn't happen. He says, "Now, if you choose not to respond to my parental authority, I should warn you that I have mind-altering drugs in the other room and I'm not afraid to use them." Hee. Ephram isn't amused, but he goes inside anyway. Treat stays outside and pats himself on the back. Job well done, Brown.

Inside, a good-looking young thing is standing at the piano. When he catches sight of Ephram, he introduces himself as "Matthew Lansing." And although the writers can't have known this, I'll just take it as a secret shout-out, because my dad's and little brother's name is Lansing. Middle initial "M." See? M. Lansing. Lansing M. What? What? M. Lansing says, "Play something for me, Ephram." Ephram says, "Like what?" M. Lansing says, "Whatever you want. It'll tell me what I need to know." Ephram sits at the piano and begins to play. I love how he totally can't hide his joy at playing. M. Lansing looks on, pleased with his new student.

Treat is still on the porch, listening to Ephram's playing. He can't stop smiling. Sars just sent him a marriage proposal. Nina walks over, and comments on Ephram's beautiful playing. Treat says, "His playing never ceases to amaze me. It's...it's like a sunset." The entire Everwood forum just sent him a marriage proposal. Nina nods and laughs. Treat asks her if Carl's gone. She says he left this morning, and that he thinks he can "get an extra day time." Treat wants to know how Sam is taking it. Nina says he'll be okay. Except she doesn't believe it. She says she should go. After she leaves, Treat notices the ladder still propped against the house. He walks around the porch and starts to climb it. Irv tells us, "There are no certainties where dreams are concerned. Some are achieved, but just as many sputter and die. When they do, it's tempting to wonder why you ever dreamed at all." We pan out to a shot of the sun setting through the trees. Ephram's piano still plays in the background, and I love this goddamned show.
