Two for the Price of One

Double elimination! That means two couples! TWO! We're that much closer to the end of this season! This has actually been a good season, but by this point in any season, I'm just over it.

Kylie Minogue (who doesn't age) is on hand to perform "The Locomotion." Man, I remember when this was on the radio. I am old. I mean her version, not the original from the '60s. I'm not THAT old. The troupe comes out to dance, and Kym and Tristan are in there. Okay, now I have to look up how old Kylie Minogue is, because she's got legs that won't quit even if her voice is a little nasally. I guess she's 44. So she was a child when this song was on the charts.

Melissa and Tony were the high scorers last night, by far. Tony was so, so happy with their scores. It's nice to see Tony happy. I really feel like, after being saddled with Kate Gosselin, he deserves many, many seasons of happiness. With Shawn and Derek (and Mark) doing their tribal dance, it's really interesting that I read a blog post about cultural appropriation, what it means, and why it's wrong. It was in reaction to the No Doubt video controversy, but I think it applies here.

Melissa and Tony and Shawn and Derek are all safe. Well, at least we know that the best dancers are going to make the semifinals.

Brooke is upstairs to talk to Gilles, Emmitt, and Apolo. Gilles is excited to have the chance to dance to Michael Jackson, his inspiration, week. Emmitt says that they're all worried, and they've all gotten close. Apolo jokes that if Tom calls his name tonight, he's not going to leave. And I am telling you, Apolo's not going.

The cast of Newsies. Lots of newboy caps and knickers. And singing!

Ne-Yo is on hand to perform "Let Me Love You Until You Learn to Love Yourself" (which is a really long song title.) Can I tell you about this blister I have on the top of my tongue? I think I got it from eating microwave popcorn, which is super lame. But it keeps catching on my teeth and I think it's making me crankier than normal. Anyway, that blister prevented me from enjoying Ne-Yo's performance. As far as I can tell, he's a combination of Michael Jackson and Usher.

Brooke interviews Kelly and Val as well as Maks and Kirstie. Kelly says that it's tough to be up there with Maks and Kirstie, knowing that at least one of them is going home. She's probably right. Let's hope it's Kirstie, who talks about how her fans are the greatest fans. Is anyone ever like, "My fans kind of suck. This other person has really great fans. Mine are so-so."

Time to review last night's performance with Maks and Kirstie. She was sloppy in her trio dance, and tried to make a joke with Tristan about how he was already voted off but it kind of falls flat. Kelly reminded us that this was going to come down to viewer votes. Might have been helpful for some to have that reminder last night.

Time to find out if these two couples are in jeopardy. Ooh, they're not just doing jeopardy. They're telling us who's going home. And it's Kirstie and Maks. Yay! I mean, boo. Just kidding, I totally mean yay. They lasted about two weeks longer than they deserved, and they know it. Kirstie thanks Maks, the fans, and even the judges. They make Maks and Kirstie take center stage but then don't play any music so they're just standing there, which is weird. So wait, are Kelly and Val safe?

Clip package of how this season has been incredibly stressful on the pros too. Cheryl reveals that they've been practicing double time, which I can't even believe because usually at this point, they're already rehearsing all day, every day. Poor Val has never even been close to the finals so he's got to be freaking out.

The couples are going to be choosing a dance and a theme, and Tom warns us that they're crazy and don't make any sense. Kelly and Val are choosing for Melissa and Tony, and they pick "Caveman" Hustle. Tom explains that they'll be assigned a song that might help these themes make sense. Cheryl and Emmitt choose "Knight Rider" Banghra for Shawn and Derek, and Derek doesn't even know what that is. Tom explains that it's an Indian folk dance. Apolo and Karina choose "Mad Monk" Merengue for Gilles and Peta, who return the favor with "Big Top" Jazz for Apolo and Karina. Shawn and Derek choose "Espionage" Lindy Hop for Emmitt and Cheryl, and Kelly and Val are left with "Surfer" Flamenco. I guess as far as filler goes, these segments are fine, but I bet that the producers were hoping for more screwing over, and this group just isn't doing that.

Anna and Val are dancing with the principal male and female dancers from the New York City ballet. I was just wondering where Anna has been. Wow, that was really, really beautiful. Normally I'm not so into the random dances, but that was stunning from the staging to the lighting to obviously, the dancing.

Time to look back at Apolo and Karina. Nothing that interesting happened except that their partner made a lame boy band joke. Len was rooting for Gilles really hard in his dance. I think Len has a crush on Gilles, giving him two 10s last night. Cheryl reminds Emmitt to enjoy the moment, and he sends it right back to her.

Tom says that he can't believe that they have to say goodbye to one of these three couples. So I guess Kelly and Val are safe? Am I the only one who's confused about that? Well, Emmitt and Cheryl are safe. You guys, I think Gilles is going to fall to the floor if he gets eliminated. He REALLY, REALLY wants to stay.

Brooke asks Apolo and Karina and Gilles and Peta to come down to the platform. Tom asks Len what they will lose when one of these couples leaves. Len says that he loves both couples. He loves how Gilles gives a hundred percent every week. He loves how Apolo has come back stronger and stronger with the determination of an Olympian. I think Len was about to say who he thought should go home and they cut him off.

Tom is ready to announce who's leaving. I don't really care which of these two couples leaves; I don't think either of them deserves to win the whole thing. It makes me sad to say that about Gilles, who I really loved on his last tour, but there it is. And Gilles and Peta are going home. I think his attitude turned off people. Brooke wants to know how Gilles feels. Gilles says he had an inkling because his scores have been kind of low, and he thanks his wife, who is a lucky lady. On to the semifinals. We finally dumped the dead weight that was Kirstie Alley, and that's not a fat joke.
