Rodeo Girls

The girls head to Walmart (or… a tent set up outside of Walmart) for a Cover Girl personality challenge, in which they have to present the benefits of a smoky eye kit (!!!!) and some sort of lip goo to shoppers. They are set up in teams of three. Kendal, Ann and Jane are the first team, and Ann is of course super-awkward and uncomfortable. Team two features Esther, Kayla and Kacey, who display loads of personality. Team three is Chris, Chelsey and Liz, and Chris talks over everyone else in a manner that she thinks is charming but everyone else thinks is overbearing. Fashion journalist Derek Blasberg is on hand to evaluate the girls, and they also get ranked by the crowd. Ann gets the lowest score of all, while Kacey gets the highest. Team two wins and gets a shopping spree in the Cover Girl aisle of Walmart. Seriously. Ann notes that she has to figure out how to deal with how awkward and weird she is. Her words!

For the week's photo shoot, the girls head to Rodeo Drive. Kendal uses this opportunity to bumpkin it up by saying "rodeo" like a cowboy rodeo. It's a very good day for the girls, who get to work with super stylist Lori Goldstein and be photographed by Patrick Demarchelier. With the exception of Chris, the girls are paired up for the shoot and walk arm in arm in arm with one of their male-model friends. After the group shot, each girl has to do a shot where she is running or jumping in a fashionable way. Tyra is on set to play kissy-kissy with Patrick and give the girls some pointers.

Kacey and Jane are paired, and while Jane really pulls it out for once, Kacey never quite gets her groove on. Patrick even has to tell her to wake up. Ann is stressed out by the chaos and gawkers on Rodeo, and is very stiff and nervous on set. Chelsey is also nervous about being shot by Patrick Demarchelier, and appears to underperform. Kayla and Esther are paired, and while Esther works it, Kayla is troubled by too-small shoes. Her pain shows all over her face. Kendal and Liz are paired, and while Kendal loves the attention she's getting and really pulls it out, Liz fades into the background by comparison. Chris gets great feedback on set as she laughs and giggles with her male model.

At panel, Chelsey and Ann miraculously pull out a great shot, though Tyra says that theirs (and particularly Ann's portion of it) was one of the most awkward shoots she's ever witnessed. Ann once again gets best photo, to the chagrin of just about everyone. Even Tyra admits that things are getting boring. Jane is the deserving runner-up. Kayla and Kacey land in the bottom two, and despite her challenge win, it's Kacey who gets sent home.

Previously on America's Top Model: The girls went for a wild ride on a moving conveyor belt runway, and even though there were some stumbles nobody broke a leg. The much-hated Kacey won the challenge, to the chagrin of everyone else. Kacey and Lexie went at it again, and Liz and her emphatic spittle couldn't resist getting into the mix. Continuing the homage to fake drama, all of the girls got into the ring for a photo shoot inspired by Mexican masked wrestling. Tyra asks if we can believe that Ann got top photo for the fourth time in a row. I for one cannot, and I have a feeling that ten other bitches (including Ann) are with me on that one. Lexie was not a very good model, and that finally got her sent home. Nine bitches remain!

The girls ride in their little party bus back to the house. Kayla reminds us that she grew up with nothing and slept in a sleeping bag until she was in high school, while her mom fraternized with someone she was forced to call "uncle." Top Model is a dream for her, and she says that two years ago this would have seemed impossible. Meanwhile, Chris calls Ann "The Last of the Quirkies." Daniel Day-Lewis shall play her in the film adaptation. A monotone Ann interviews that her confidence is really high right now. She's gone from not being so sure about herself to getting top photo four times in a row. Ann starts to well up with tears as she says she feels like a model and not just a gangly girl who sits in the back of class. She really does feel pretty, and is really happy, and even manages to crack a half smile to prove it. Now that she's discovered the wonder of self-love, there's really nothing stopping her quest to meet the warlock lover of her dreams! Maybe ALT will officiate.

Back in the limo, Liz says that Ann is full of it -- she acts all goofy and quirky, but then kills a gaggle of bitches with her ferocity once she gets on set. Ann gives a goofy laugh. Meanwhile, Chelsey tells us that she has been pursuing her modeling career for a really long time. Being on this show is not only the biggest chance she's ever gotten, but probably the last one. She's trying to make the most of it. That way when she's earning a living as a social worker two years from now she'll have no regrets.

Back at the house there is Tyra Mail. It simply says "Ding Dong." Oh no, Tyra is dead? Will ALT take over? Does Janice have an alibi? So many questions! Oh, but wait. There's a package at the door. Or, rather, the top of the stairs. It gives instructions for splitting the girls into groups, and gives each group a "Cover Girl Kit." Jane reads the instructions: "To be the face of Cover Girl, you must first face your public. Work together with your assigned group to familiarize yourself with these Smoky Eye Look Kits and Lasting Color and High Shine Lip Duo Packs. Tomorrow you and your groups will be the face of these products. How will you outshine the competition and capture the public's attention? Better get to work. Good luck." I'm going to save you all a kit's worth of money and tell you that to get a smoky eye you need eyeliner and a finger. And you really don't need to purchase the finger.

We first cut to team two -- Kacey, Kayla and Esther. Kacey tells us that she prefers riding solo to being in a team. I'm with her on that one, and I'm not even universally reviled. So, I get where she's coming from with this. Kacey tells us that everyone sees her as an ugly person, so she's being strong and doing what she has to do and not letting them affect her. You do have to give Kacey credit for not showing the slightest inkling of crumpling under such clear animosity, though perhaps this is part of what makes her so disliked in the first place. Team one is Ann, Kendal and Jane. Ann nervously says that she thinks they're going to be out talking to people about the products. She reminds us that she's really quiet. She's been trying to come out of her shell since middle school, when she didn't talk at all. I wonder if her voice is so deep from lack of use. Ann knows that being able to put her personality out there when called upon to do so is going to be difficult for her. I bet it won't even be difficult in a fun to watch way, either. How depressing. Team three is Liz, Chris and Chelsey. Chelsey thinks they should write product descriptions on note cards. She tells us she's happy to be on a team with Liz and Chris -- they're easygoing, fun to work with, and are already friends. This statement can only foretell doom.

The girls head out, either at dusk or before sunup, and meet Nigel at a dark Walmart parking lot. There is a fancy tent set up, which is the locale where the girls get to show the public what it means to be a Cover Girl. Nigel stresses how important it is for models to be personable, charming, and authentic, and reminds them that they've already gotten info on the eye kit and lip duo packs. Today they'll be working in teams to interact and engage the public on the benefits of each product. A variety of Walmart shoppers have been recruited to judge their presentations. We then flash to Nigel and the scene is very bright, indicating that he's either heavily lit or this was filmed during daylight hours before the girls got there. This challenge is all about marketing of products, and marketing of themselves. The prize at stake is a shopping spree... in the Cover Girl aisle at Walmart. I guess they can't all be diamonds.

The girls set up at three stations inside the tent. By "stations" I mean tables, which are set up side to side. There are snacks for the crowd. Chelsey really, really wants to win this challenge because she really, really wants to be a Cover girl spokesperson. In the words of Michael Jackson to Paul McCartney in the legendary song "The Girl Is Mine," you keep dreamin'! Ann tells us that she's 6'2 and a half, and being shy around people is a defense mechanism. She thinks that if she stays under the radar, people won't notice her height, and thus won't make fun of her or ask her questions about it. This is clearly a bad strategy, since people will just wonder what's up with the weird mute tall girl in the corner.

The crowd enters, and the shoppers get their first demo from Ann, Jane and Kendal. Kendal explains the kit's first step, which involves a Smoky Shadowblast Eye Shadow Stick, and the second step, which involves a darker, some may say smokier shade. She demonstrates on Ann, while Jane expounds upon the great variety of products that can be mixed and match to make you look like a Cover Girl no matter where you are. As Kendal goes on about some sort of liquid eyeliner, Ann remains silent and uncomfortable. Chelsey tells us that this competition is looking for the whole package, and a lot of the package involves personality and being able to present yourself. She doesn't think Ann can do this very well. And seriously, Ann could at least try to mutely smile.

Esther, Kayla and Kacey then get a crack at the crowd. Esther explains that the smoky eye kit comes in natural, bold or glamorous, and can thus be paired with your personality. Kacey talks about mascara, and entreats the guys in the audience to think about how their girlfriends might enjoy a smoky eye kit gift. Cheaper and less committal than a ring! Kayla then notes that she's a sporty girl, which may or may not be code, and applying makeup is not her forte. The simple steps make it easy for her, and if she can do it, any other butch lady can do it. This team seems to have done a really great job being friendly, natural, and personable, and also split up the talking quite well.

Finally we have team three -- Chris, Chelsey and Liz. Chris tells us she was prepared to do whatever it took for her team to win. She tells the crowd that they can get smoky eye star quality without spending tons of cash. They are, after all, in a Walmart parking lot. Chelsey starts talking about the mascara, and before she can get her seventh word out Chris points to her eyelashes and screams, "Don't that look fake! Don't that look fake!" Chelsey interviews that she was really trying hard, and Chris was a bit overpowering, which was frustrating. We don't get to see any of Liz and whether she had spittle-flying opinions on this issue.

With presentations over, the girls head back out into the dark parking lot with Nigel. Nigel brings out Derek Blasberg, a fashion journalist and author of the book Classy, which gives advice to ladies about lady stuff. Derek was amongst the crowd evaluating the girls, and hopefully will tell them what he thought in addition to trying to shill his book. The rest of the crowd was also evaluating the girls, and the girls will get to see and hear everything they have to say via a TV monitor as Nigel goes to interview them. As Ann looks very sad, we head to commercials.

When we return, the girls watch Nigel's crowd interviews to see exactly what the public thinks about them. Ann's curious, because even though people seemed nice she wonders what they say behind her back. One participant says that Ann's a beautiful girl, but she was quiet and uncomfortable. Derek adds that Ann was like a mannequin when Kendal gave her a smoky eye. One audience member commends Kayla for her mention of sportiness. He has a sister who's an, ahem, athlete, and he wants to suggest this product to her. And get Kayla's number and see if she and his sister might go out for coffee or to throw around the old softball. One woman says that Kacey was nice and approachable, but also selling product. Then there's Chris. One guy says that Chris was overpowering - she talked over everyone, and he didn't care for it. Derek tells Chris that you don't want to overshadow your friends. You can be bright when it's your time to shine, but also let others get some sun as well. It must have been cold there in Chris's shadow, to never have sunlight on your face. Liz was content to let Chris shine, that's her way. She always walked a step behind. And now I'm just going to jump to the part where you bellow, "Flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!" Anyway, one crowd member felt bad for Chelsey, who kept trying to talk but was constantly interrupted by Chris. Flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Nigel returns to the girls and notes with some sarcasm that it's always refreshing to hear what the public thinks of you. That's why Tyra loves to read my recaps so much. The crowd was also asked to score each of the girls. Ann got the lowest score, which comes as no surprise but still seems to sadden her. Nigel tells Ann that there's a lot more to becoming a model than having the top photo four weeks in a row. You have to be personable. The winning team is team two -- Kayla, Kacey and Esther. Well-deserved, I think. And the girl with the highest score was Kacey. She thinks that she's been redeemed, and that this somehow proves that she's not the bitchy girl that everyone thinks she is. Liz points out that this challenge rewarded those who could be loud and fake. I would actually say that this challenge played to Kacey's fakeness strengths, which are particularly formulated for selling makeup to strangers.

Kayla, Kacey and Esther get their Cover Girl aisle shopping spree in Walmart, and get to take as many products as you can fit into an eco-friendly blue Walmart bag. Worst prize ever. The three winning girls each do themselves up in Cover Girl product, and Nigel likes Esther's look the best. She thus gets a $1,000 Walmart gift card. Shouldn't that have legitimately gone to Kacey for being voted the best in the challenge?

Back at the house, there is Tyra Mail! "Tomorrow will be no walk of shame, but rather a walk of fame. Love, Tyra." Kacey thinks they'll be on Hollywood Boulevard, and Chelsey wonders if they'll be dressed as famous people. Ann says that she takes great photos, but she's so awkward and weird in person. She's trying to deal with this gradually, but is having to rush through it because of the competition. Basically, Ann says, her homework is improving her personality. A little bit different than the looking at magazines that Tyra usually assigns.

The girls head out in their party bus and head to Beverly Hills, winding up on Rodeo Drive. Kendal pronounces it like you would a cowboy rodeo, because her bumpkin character is charming. She says she's in hog-tying heaven. Her actual words are, "Oh my gosh. I watch TV about rodeo drive. That's where the celebrities be when they go shopping. Nice cars. The stores even look expensive." Even the stores -- imagine! This is quite an upgrade from the Walmart parking lot, though. Jay meets the girls and tells them that they're going to experience one of the most prestigious photo shoots in Top Model history. To get them ready, they'll be working with highly sought-after stylist Lori Goldstein. And then they'll be shot by Patrick Demarchelier, who is super famous. Jay tells the girls that this is a big, big deal. Patrick comes out and tells the girls that the more they relax, the better they'll do. At least I think that's what he says. Patrick Demarchelier is very French, and very masculine in an artsy old guy kind of way.

Jay explains that the girls will be doing group shots in motion. This means that they'll be paired with one other girl and a male model. Everyone heads to hair and makeup. Chelsey tells us that she has goals, and then she has fantasyland goals that will probably never happen. She can now check Patrick Demarchelier off of both lists. Make-up artist Molly Stern works on Jane, as Lori Goldstein styles Liz to look like an amalgam of herself and Samantha Ronson. Lori calls Liz's look "masculine-feminine chicness." Patrick thinks she looks cool. Lori also loves the Halston Heritage ensemble in which she's dressed Kendal. Lori tells us that what she loves about high fashion is that it excites her so much. That's like saying I love cookies because I think cookies are awesome. Which I suppose you can't really argue with. Lori wants us to have fun and mix patterns and be not afraid to do things we wouldn't normally do. Go in your closets and have a blast, ladies! Except do not emulate the looks that Lori is putting together today, because 75% of them are absolutely hideous. I think famous stylists really just like to fuck with us.

The girls go meet Jay in his trailer, amidst a weird product placement for trailers. You want a trailer with a flat-screen TV? Try Verde trailers. WTF? Jay tells the girls that they're only technically shooting five shots, since all the girls but one will be paired. Chris will be on her own with a male model. She seems quite excited about this. Liz and Kendal will be paired, as will Kayla and Esther. Jane and Kacey will be paired, which leaves Chelsey to pose with Ann. Chelsey is not thrilled about this, since Ann has been totally dominating the competition thus far. She feels like she'll have to work a lot harder to stand out against Ann. As Chelsey reminds us that she's an ancient, weathered hag who can't afford to screw up at all, we head to commercials.

When we return, Jay tells the girls that the key to success on this shoot is to "listen to his thing and just go with it." Jay's helpful hints get more specific with each episode. And just when we thought things couldn't get better, Tyra pops up! She's dressed like Fozzie Bear dressed as a reporter. Masculine-feminine chic! She says some words in French to Patrick Demarchelier, and then just hangs about to make the girls nervous slash give direction. Kacey and Jane are up first, and since they have a male model other than Shaw, Kacey doesn't have to worry about her hormones distracting her. Patrick tells Kacey to relax and not try too much. Kacey thinks that Jane is her biggest competition, because she's so beautiful and has so much potential. Jane hasn't done a whole lot so far this season, so I wouldn't be too worried about her. Speaking of Jane, she's dressed like Pocahontas for this shoot. After the girls stroll in a relaxed fashion with their male escort, they each have to do an individual shoot that entails walking and/or leaping. This is how the magic's made, folks. As Kacey walks Patrick yells, "Euuuuh! Wake up, bebe! Wake up! Euuuuuuuh!" That can't be good. Patrick asks Tyra to show 'em how it's done. Tyra leaps in a stupid fashion that probably looks awesome on camera, and the crowd cheers. Patrick likes Jane and thinks she has an interesting look, but says that she's more on the commercial side. Patrick then declares that Tyra will be this season's winner. Per usual. Tyra points at her own photo and says, "I hear she's the bitch in the house."

Patrick and Tyra reminisce about the good old days, when he shot her. He thinks she was 16, but Tyra says that she was 18, which she knows because she only started living in France when she was 17. Though I do prize my healthy relationship with food, I must say that being a 17-year-old supermodel sounds pretty fun. Being able to retire at 22 sounds even better. Chelsey and Ann are , and Chelsey tells us that being paired with Ann was intimidating since she doesn't have to do anything at all to be fabulous. For her part, Ann is a bit overwhelmed by the chaos of Rodeo Drive and the spectacle of the shoot. Amidst this chaos, however, Lori Goldstein has managed to find acid-washed skinny jeans that fit Ann. I guess she really is a genius, if an evil one. Jay tells us that Ann was nervous and stiff on set. Tyra notices it too, and tries to teach Ann how to get wind in her hair and bend her knees less. Ann tries to skip, and it is possibly the most horrible thing I've ever seen. And I've stayed at the Hotel Carter. Jay tells us that he had high hopes for Chelsey, who was thrilled when she found out that they were shooting with Patrick Demarchelier. However, her performance is disappointing, and Patrick has to demonstrate how to skip fashionably. Tyra tries to teach her how to turn to the photographer while she's being skippy. Chelsey admits that she was nervous, and is frustrated to have biffed the biggest day of her life.

Esther and Kayla are . Kayla's ensemble is truly horrific, though with the red hair she's a bit reminiscent of early Cyndi Lauper. Kayla was given a pair of shoes that were one size too small, and she's in some serious pain. This really impedes her ability to skip dramatically. In fact, she can barely walk. Esther, however, is really amazing in front of the camera according to Lori Goldstein. She's quiet and subtle, but makes it work. Patrick likes her smile and attitude, and says that she's very photogenic. Kayla tries to take direction from Patrick, but can't understand what he's saying given the thick French accent. Patrick whispers to Tyra that sometimes the girls seem to think he's speaking Chinese. She throws her head back and laughs in an exaggerated fashion, because she totally can't understand him either but gathers from context clues that he's making a joke.

Liz and Kendal are up , and Kendal is in love with the whole thing - Rodeo Drive, her white fur, and all the people around snapping pictures. She feels like a celebrity, and Jay tells us that she looks like Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City. Shaw, who is their male escort, also looks good. Liz, however, is being outshone. She looks cute in her soft butch gear, so it's too bad when Jay says that you almost don't even notice her. Kendal seems to do a fine job with her individual shot, but Liz, who can't jump in her giant stripper shoes, ends up doing a really whack little saunter that Tyra and the others mock. At least Liz isn't complaining this time, which bodes well for her chances of staying in the competition.

Chris is , and is in a very frilly, girly ensemble. Jay says that she was very good at creating an energy grounded in reality. Chris says that Patrick wanted the girls to, "Walk up and down the street, have a good time, laugh, giggle...I do that when I wake up." Chris is also helped by the fact that her hair is styled to cover three-fifths of her giant forehead. It really makes her look better. Chris gets mad compliments, and tells us that she's not a diva, but feels like one today. On that high note, it's a wrap! The girls eat and debrief afterwards. Kacey asks the others if they struggled. She says that this was a high-pressure shoot for her, given their high-profile photographer. Kendal tells us that Kacey practices in front of the mirror all the time, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Kendal also thinks that Kacey is "more muscle...like a fit model" and isn't right for Italian Vogue. They go from turnip truck to critic so fast, don't they? Kayla, meanwhile, says that this shoot, which seemed like it should be simple with the running and the smiling, was actually the hardest yet. But she hasn't let the thought of going home get in her head. Her feet have to heal before she can really consider that one. Commercials.

We return to pre-panel goodness featuring a maroon-caped ALT, Patrick Demarchelier, and Tyra speaking in French. Tyra is apparently best with French when she's in France. Celebrities! They're just like us. The girls enter. There are prizes, there are judges. Tyra reminds everyone just what a big deal Patrick Demarchelier is. Kendal and Liz's group shot is first. Nigel says that he doesn't notice the guy at all, and his eyes go straight to Kendal. She does look gorgeous. Tyra asks Patrick what it was like shooting with the two of them. She was there, so she should know. Patrick says that they were fantastic and very relaxed and did a good job. Kendal's walking shot is so good that ALT says it's almost like a gazelle on one foot, and something you could see a model doing. Patrick Demarchelier says, "Frenchfrenchfrenchfrenchfrench very good." Tyra is impressed that Kendal is selling product. Liz's individual photo isn't authentic, according to Nigel. Tyra says that she was sort of making fun of it rather than committing to an emotion. You can't really blame a girl for that.

Esther and Kayla are . Esther is engaging in the group photo, but Kayla looks sad to ALT. He thinks that her face looks in pain. It was! Tyra tells Kayla that she knew the shoes were hurting and so tried to slow down the walk, but no matter how slow they went she still wore the pain on her face. When you have too-small shoes on, that shit hurts no matter the pace of your stride. Kayla tells the judges that the shoes were really small, and Tyra says, "I think you guys are so confused about modeling being about you. It's about what's there. And it's about feeling the pain, and complaining between the shots to yourself." That might be the most sensible thing she's said in fifteen seasons. Esther's individual shot is really good, and she's also managed to successfully sell multiple products. Nigel thinks that Kayla's walking shot is awkward, but it works for ALT, who thinks she looks like Kate Moss's best friend leaving the great Armani Emporium. Tyra points out that Kayla's arms are a little short, and so closing her fists to make her hands look like stumps really does not benefit her.

Jane and Kacey are . Jane looks like an extraordinary French supermodel actress with a faraway mystery in her eyes, according to ALT. On the other hand, Kacey looks snotty and detached. Nigel thinks that Kacey's portion of the group shot could work as a single, but given that there are two other people in the shot with her that she's ostensibly ignoring, it's a fail. Jane's single shot is superb. ALT yells, "Fashion! High! Haute!" with great enthusiasm. Patrick thinks Jane was great, with good energy and movement. Kacey's individual shot has good body language, but her face isn't angled toward the camera. Tyra thinks that it would have been fine in a six-page spread, however she's disappointed that Kacey didn't use the head snap that she taught. Kacey also has dead eyes, per usual, and needs to bring her fake effervescent personality to her photos.

we have Ann and Chelsey. Nigel thinks that their group shot is best of all, because they work so well as a team. What he really wants to say is, "Your group shot is the best because Ann's in it." Nigel thinks that Chelsey's portion of the group shot is her best yet. She's full of life and charming. Ann, meanwhile, also gets kudos. With one hand on the hip, ALT thinks she looks like she has control over the universe. Tyra notes that this was one of the most awkward photo shoots she's ever seen in person, but Ann looks amazing in shot after shot. Tyra mimics Ann trying to walk down the street, to the delight of the other judges. Nigel tells Ann that she's lucky because a still camera captures only one moment. However, she'll also have to do commercials and be seen in public. As photogenic as she is, she also wants her public to love her. Nigel tells her to try to work it out. Ann's individual shot comes up and ALT screams, "Beyond! Ah! Beyond. Everything. Ever! That you've done." Once again I totally don't think it's that great. I mean, it's fine. But the Ann tongue bath confuses me. Chelsey's photo is workable as well. Nigel says it's cute and sweet, but not high fashion in large part because of Chelsey's expression. Patrick says it's a pretty good picture. Chelsey admits that she was nervous to be shot by Patrick, who is her superhero. Patrick laughs nonchalantly, as you do when you're French and accustomed to being a superhero to 19-year olds.

Finally there's Chris. Her photo with the male model is totally adorable. Tyra thinks it looks like a beautiful spread in Teen Vogue. ALT, however, doesn't like it, simply because he doesn't feel "the zing." However, he does love her individual shot, which is happy and full of vitality. Patrick likes her movement, but thinks her smile is too wide and needs to be controlled.

The judges deliberate. And as they do so they look at new beauty shots of each girl. I have no idea why, other than it's a terrible thing to waste a Patrick Demarchelier photograph. Liz's beauty shot works well because she's being believable, finally, and not hamming it up. ALT appreciates the softness in the beauty shot, which is rarely seen in Liz. Kendal's beauty shot is gorgeous, and her individual photo features the best movement, according to Patrick. Tyra thinks she looks like a new, fresh girl who still knows how to move. Nigel points out that the problem with Kendal would be booking her in the first place, since she's a total bumpkin mess. Esther is great, though Patrick notes that she's shy and nervous. At the same time, Nigel says, her shyness is cute and sweet. Kayla's beauty shot is mean, still and flat. Patrick thinks she was stiff, and Nigel says that she's not the star of the show. Kayla's foot pain was also a problem, as you might have heard. When you focus on Jane and only on Jane, she gets nervous. However, she's great in a group shot. Except for that other jumping shot that they loved, of course. Kacey looked like a snooty African exiled princess in her group photo, according to ALT. Nigel says that she has all the pieces to be a model, but when you stick them together they're a dead-eyed mess. However, she's a good spokesperson and her confidence will get her far. But as a model, you need to be able to take a picture.

Ann is American, but ALT thinks she almost looks international. Nigel says that he wishes he could get more out of her in person. Patrick says, "Amazing. The personality is something shy and wrong, but she looked great in the picture." Chelsey is improving according to Nigel, but ALT says she consistently gives "the luck of the draw of the society heiress who wants to be a model struggling." Tyra disagrees that she's a society girl, and thinks she has an edge. Chris did great, but Patrick thinks she maybe had too much energy and needs to control it a bit. Tyra thinks that Chris is telling a story, but it's more Teen Vogue than Italian Vogue. With that, the judges have reached a decision.

Nine beautiful ladies stand before Tyra, but she only has eight photos in her hands. Those photos represent the eight girls who are still in the running towards becoming America's Top Model. Ann gets the best photo AGAIN! We see only the top of Kacey's head, since she's standing directly in front of Ann and one level below, but it's enough to see a giant eye roll. Well put. Tyra says, "Ann, you're making this so not interesting." I'll say. Jane gets the photo and is pleased to have finally done well. Kendal is called , followed by Esther, Chris, Chelsey, and Liz. This leaves Kayla and Kacey in the bottom two. Kacey is beautiful and has strong bone structure, but she was disconnected this week. Kayla was also disconnected, and didn't know how to hide her too-tight-shoe pain. Disconnected is the word of the day. Say it with me now: disconnected.

Kayla gets a photo. Tyra tells her that a lot of modeling is being in pain and being uncomfortable, but it's not going to kill you. And it will make you a shitload of money. Get over it. Kacey is bawling. Tyra tells her that she has beautiful goods (!!) but needs some more time if she wants to hang with the other girls. She should go home and practice and do some local Walmart flyers, Tyra says. Agreed. Kacey cries and cries and says that this sucks really bad. She feels defeated and drained and wonders how you go home after this. She says she'll never get over this. I have to say, after all the weeks of strength and fakery it's kind of great to see her in mascara-running pain. But still she should buck up and be happy about the free contacts.

week: The girls are challenged to dress each other and stand on the Grammy stage, and then apparently have to dress up as fashion designers. In a surprise twist, Liz gets to be a dude.
