Mitchell

Jake's investigative stroll continues. The music gets even more excited as he turns yet another corner and finds...a horse! Saddled up and tied to a pen, which contains a half-dozen more horses. Jake reaches over to greet one, and the horse flings its head back. Johanna says, "That horse totally dissed him." Its neighbor tries to make up for it by stretching its head out to nuzzle Jake's hand. "Sorry about that, dude," the horse thinks, "but we haven't seen you in five years, so don't be so pushy." Dale suddenly appears behind Jake and greets him with surprise. Jake hustles over to ask what Dale's doing there. Dale says, "I'm so sorry -- I didn't know!" "Didn't know what?" Jake asks. "That you're about to be clobbered by Mitchell, who just materialized behind you," Dale doesn't say. And then Jake is clobbered by Mitchell, who just materialized behind him. A horse whinnies, maybe because it's startled by the violence, or maybe because that's how horses giggle.

After the ads, Jake is having a nice nap inside a shed, while Mitchell tenderly watches over him. Jake groans a little, and Dale moves toward him, whereupon Mitchell aims a double-barreled shotgun at Dale's chest. That seems excessive. Although he probably knows that Dale is a dangerous psychopath. Sean's also there, lurking near the door. As Dale backs off, Jake starts to get up, and gasps, "Get the hell out of here, Dale." Mitchell announces that this is Dale's initiation. Jake tells Mitchell that he's "crossed the line." Mitchell leans down, all, "Excuse me?" and Jake says, "You heard me." Uh oh, I think they may have to settle this with a dance-off. Jake grumbles about Mitchell "coming to our family's ranch," and I wonder if he's got a mouse in his pocket. Mitchell gripes about how he went to jail, and his friend got his head blown off, all because Jake bailed on them. Jake gasps, "I told you, I wasn't gonna rob anybody!" Wait, Jake's dark secret is that he didn't participate in a crime? Even for this show, that's pathetic.

Mitchell goes on being vaguely menacing, walking around in tight circles around Jake, I guess because he considers the shotgun to be a poor substitute for a club. Jake threatens to kill him, instead of just knocking Mitchell's legs out from under him and taking the shotgun away. Mitchell finally tells Jake to get up, adding, "I'm taking you to go see Jonah." And then he actually puts the shotgun in his left hand , and uses his right to help haul Jake to his feet. And yes, he's right-handed. Which is very thoughtful of him, but of course that leads to Jake sucker-punching him. Mitchell drops the shotgun, and then as they trade punches, Dale thinks, "Hah, Jake can't stop me now!" and gives Sean a tremendous shove. And then Sean knocks Dale down. Good effort, Dale. Mitchell manages to pick the gun up, but just as he's taking aim at Jake, the door slides open and there's Eric and Good Cop, guns drawn. Mitchell wheels and fires the shotgun, but his bad luck is still holding since he somehow manages to miss two targets not ten feet from him. And then he runs past them out the door, and gets on the horse he'd tied to the fence. But he doesn't leap into the saddle dramatically or anything. Even the bad guys in this town are dull. Jake dashes out in hot pursuit, and ducks behind a couple of bales of hay which easily deflect the shotgun blast Mitchell aims his way. Good Cop manages to collar Sean, and Eric grabs Dale, but Mitchell gallops away. Jake puts his hands up on his head again to express frustration. Although Johanna wondered if he was just confused and thought he was supposed to surrender.
