Matt comes into Julie's room to discuss the letter she wrote him. In an interview, Julie reminds us that she wrote Matt a letter. In case you missed last week's episode. Matt says that he takes the letter to heart, but he doesn't know where parts of it are coming from. He reads a section where Julie said she feels Matt judges people more on "what they like instead of what they are like." Matt asks for some clarification on that point. Julie starts to explain, but first we see Matt say in an interview that the letter caught him off-guard and it bothers him that he's hurt Julie. Julie reminds him of a time in Africa where she was hanging over the side of the boat when there were sharks in the water. We see a flashback in black and white of that moment. Julie hangs over the side of the boat. There are sharks in the water. Matt looks worried. We get it. Matt tells her that his "masculine instincts kick in" and he feels like he has to protect her. You know, it's one thing to worry about a friend, but don't blame it on your "masculine instincts." If I saw a friend about to fall into shark-infested water, I'd probably say or do something too. It has nothing to do with being a man. Because I'm not one. In case that wasn't clear. I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- Matt has issues with women. Matt says that he likes Julie more than he likes Jamie, and in a different way than he likes Kelley or Melissa, but he can't describe it. Julie looks bemused. In a confessional, Julie says she's not afraid of a more intimate relationship with him, and Matt is "mildly attracted" to her, but he won't act on it because it's not a hundred percent, and it makes him uncomfortable. I want to add in here that I really appreciate the fact that Julie pronounces the word "comfortable" correctly. Most people say "comfterble" and it bugs me.
Matt, David, and Jamie go to Subway. Jamie says that he wants to be there for David in dealing with his mother's health. David says that although they came at him in "an unorthodox way, that was probably the only way." Jamie says he knows David is "an unbelievable being." David says there are no hard feelings, and they hug. Right in the middle of Subway! Good for them. ["Mmm, Subway." -- Wing Chun] And where's Matt? In an interview, David says he appreciates what he hears and experiences. In an interview, Jamie says you need other people to help you in life. David, Jamie, and Matt are sitting at a table eating. Jamie is lecturing David with some MBA-speak about "leverage" and "network." David is making eye contact! Matt points out that friends help each other out, and makes a "cup of sugar" analogy. I bet he would like to give David some sugar, and then get a cookie from David in return.
Everyone is playing spin-the-bottle in Julie and Kelley's bedroom. Well, not everyone. Julie, Kelley, Jamie, Matt, and David are playing. Danny is observing. All the boys make it clear that they won't kiss other boys. Good thing they cleared that up, because otherwise all of America might think they are gay. God knows if you kiss another boy, that makes you gay. Like the whole point of this isn't to get Matt to kiss Julie, anyway. Matt says he doesn't want to kiss a girl or hold her hand, but the girls convince him to participate. In a confessional, Kelley says she hasn't been around much so she wants to make the most of the rest of her time. Everyone gets into the room and settled. The first spin means that Julie and Jamie have to kiss. We see a flashback of them wrestling in the mud pit, with Melissa observing that it's "getting sexual." Jamie pins Julie to the floor to kiss her. Oh, dear Lord. I like seeing the roommates having a good time and all, but what are they going to do , play Old-Fashioned Tag? Seven Minutes in Heaven? Kelley kisses David. David is holding a pen in his hand like Bob Dole. On one spin, Julie grabs the bottle and points it at herself so that Matt has to kiss her. Matt won't kiss her. Julie chases him over the bed and onto the floor. This is so embarrassing. In an interview, Matt jokes that Julie didn't follow the rules and let the bottle spin. This is so boring. Does anyone care about this? In an interview, Kelley says that Matt is "scared stiff, no pun intended." Matt is hiding in between the bed and the wall. In an interview, Julie says that Matt should want her because she's hot. Matt hires a plane to skywrite, "Julie, I'm not interested" in huge letters. Julie still doesn't get it. We, as always, do.
Julie and Melissa. Outside. Julie still likes Matt. She likes the feeling of having a crush on someone, but she also hates it. Melissa says it's because it gives Matt power. Actually, she says, "That bitch has power." Julie is "still nuts about that kid." In an interview, Julie screams and shrieks and says ultimately it's Matt's loss because she's an amazing person and could give him anything he wanted. Yeah, except Catholic babies. Which is what he really wants.
Airport. Peter and Kelley. They are kissing. In an interview, Kelley says that Peter is going to Indonesia to go surfing for two weeks.
Melissa and Kelley. Kitchen. Melissa voice-overs that with Peter gone, Kelley is thrown back into the house. In an interview, Kelley says that she didn't realize how hard it was to be in the house, and that they don't click. Melissa tells Kelley that they don't hang out, and Kelley's not there, so now they aren't going to be the best of friends. In an interview, Melissa says that Kelley is with Peter "every single day" and that has "tainted the potential of [Kelley and Melissa] having a relationship." Angry music plays. This whole fight is so out of left field. It's like the editors realized that the David confrontation didn't really go anywhere exciting, so they dug through the archives to find another fight, when we have never seen these two have any problems with one another before. Anyway, Kelley thinks that they should be able to have a friendship, and Melissa says that it's too little, too late, and the best they can hope for is to be cordial to one another. In an interview, Melissa says, "None of this candy-coating, none of this sugar." Does anyone else get the feeling that she was talking about David and not Kelley? The scene ends with Kelley saying, "Can I talk now?" Ooh, such a fight. Not.
Countdown to the NOA-TV show. We actually get to see the full credits. Matt starts out explaining the focus of the show -- the art gallery. In an interview, Matt compares the final show to a final exam. As we see shot of the show, Matt reminisces about how bad their first shows were, and says they got to be "pretty damn good." In an interview, Kelley is impressed with their progress. Once again, we get it. They had to cut out parts of the David confrontation for this? Elton tells them all that he's proud of them. In an interview, Julie says that "Elton is a good boss." Elton makes them give themselves a round of applause. Ew. How cheesy. And that wraps up the NOA-TV storyline.
Julie plays the guitar on her bed. Danny asks if she is playing the song she wrote about him and Paul. Julie says she is, but that it's not finished yet. Danny applies deodorant while he says he doesn't want to hear it until it's finished. In an interview, Danny says that he asked Julie to write a song, and he gave her his scrapbook of all Paul's letters. Um, aren't those personal? I don't think I would be happy if my boyfriend showed my love letters to someone else. Julie is psyched to write a song that's not about her. Danny suggests that she sing it in front of her school. In an interview, Julie says that she wants to go back to BYU and make a change. Danny plays with the deodorant while Julie explains that she wants to go back to school and have it be different. This is all so fascinating! I wonder if Julie will be allowed to go back to BYU! Except that we all know that she can't. Danny says that if people don't like her at BYU, she shouldn't care, because she will inspire others to change. In an interview, Julie says that Danny has helped her to see that love doesn't have boundaries. Well, welcome to the world, baby girl! Julie wonders how people can question Danny's love. Danny says he can't "give a damn" or he would "fall apart."
It's raining. Julie tells Jamie she's calling BYU to find out if she can come back. The non-suspense is killing me. Julie didn't tell anyone at BYU that she was on the show because she didn't think she was going to go back. Julie leaves a message for the honor-code office. ["There's a whole office just devoted to the honor code? Damn." -- Wing Chun] Julie hops into the kitchen and tells Jamie her situation. Jamie wants to know why she might be kicked out of school. Julie reiterates all of the honor-code violations she has committed, and we get to see a black-and-white flashback for each one. She lives with boys -- she and David are talking on the bed. She doesn't keep curfew -- Julie at the rave, making her dance face. There's alcohol -- a shot of alcohol. There's immoral things going on -- Danny kisses Paul the Blur. Jamie tells her that she's "broken every rule in the book."
