After the ads, and after Hollie lets her hair down in the wings for the camera, it's time for Halie Johnsen, 23, from Beaverton, Oregon. She shows us the bedroom she painted hot pink and yellow when she was 15 and apparently still lives in. We also see the coffee shop where she used to work, which has a "Haley Johnsen Special), and she does an impressive tumbling run at a very well-padded gym. Her song is The Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams," which she starts off sounding so much like Annie Lennox I'm actually startled. And not just by the creepy eyes decorating the stage. Unfortunately it kind of goes south from there, with lots of note runs that don't really belong and which she doesn't entirely pull off. Jennifer tells her she hopes that "America could hear all the special things you did with your voice." I think we heard it better than you did, lady. Steven uses the word "money shots," demonstrating that his gift for initiating an awkward silence even works on raucous auditoriums. Randy seems to have been the only judge actually listening, calling it more of a nightmare than a dream. When that's over, Haley tells Ryan that she loves Annie Lennox and believes in herself. Ryan asks Randy what she should do, and Randy advises her to pick better songs. Probably a little late for that. Haley's a little defensive backstage after the ads, and promises to do better for Randy time. Okay, then, we'll look forward to that January.
Ryan is in the auditorium interviewing Joe Magrane, Shannon's dad, although Ryan has to stand on the step above the one Papa Magrane's standing on just to be in the same shot. Ryan yet again brings up the whole awkwardness with Steven's inappropriate comment at Shannon's first audition. After some kidding between him and Steven, Joe says it's cool, so hopefully the whole "hot, humid, and happening" thing can be put to bed. Just like Joe's daughter! Oh, look what I did there. Anyway, Shannon shows us her family's fancy house in Tampa, Florida and talks about the demands of singing lessons, volleyball, and homework. She also talks about being from a tall family; she's an even six feet, which may make her the tallest female in the competition, and roughly twice the height of Ryan. She sings "Go Light Your World" by Kathy Troccoli while dressed like Cinderella. She's a little shaky on the low notes, but pretty good for the rest of it. Randy talks about how young and yet confident she is, which he figures she gets from her dad. Jennifer compliments Shannon's passion when she sings. Steven says his "reality check bounced." Is someone feeding him these lines from offstage or writing them for him in advance and he just uses them as he remembers them? Shannon admits to Ryan that it's not a well-known song, but she wanted to get its message out there. She seems pretty happy about it after the ads.
