Episode Report Card M. Giant: D+ | Grade It Now! YOU GRADE IT I Got the Digits

By M. Giant | Season 4 | Episode 18 | Aired on 04.17.2005

As he storms back toward the holding area, Prado is insolently mocking the world with his uncuffed hands, asking how much longer he has to stick around. Weiss says he's working on it. Prado reiterates his story to Weiss as Kiefer arrives in the observation room, where he punches in the entry code and tells Curtis, "Come in with me now." Curtis follows Kiefer into the holding room and looms over Weiss, glowering. "Who are you?" Weiss asks. Kiefer and Weiss exchange introductions, Weiss rising and presenting his business card with a flourish. He's almost as tall as Kiefer, by the way. Kiefer pretends to look at the card, then asks Curtis why Prado isn't restrained. "Amnesty Global's order supersedes our authority," Curtis responds, getting in a subtle little dig at people who live in fear of international organizations interfering with American sovereignty and our ability to protect ourselves. Weiss tells Kiefer that Prado isn't trying to go anywhere; he just wants to be treated like any other U.S. citizen. Kiefer says Prado "aided and abetted the people who attacked the President of the United States today." "You don't know that," Weiss snaps. "As a matter of fact, we do," Kiefer says. "Then charge him," challenges Weiss. That shuts Kiefer up, because they can't prove the connection with ImhoTerror yet. But they can charge him with manslaughter, at least, and if Kiefer weren't so gung-ho to get right to torturing, that would probably occur to him. Instead, he invites Weiss outside for a private chat.

Weiss follows him out to the hallway at 12:44:22. Kiefer tells Weiss that they both know that Prado "conspired to steal a nuclear warhead." "All my client wants is due process," Weiss insists. Kiefer says, "These people are not going to stop attacking us today until millions and millions of people are dead. I don't want to bypass the Constitution, but these are extraordinary circumstances." Weiss says, "The Constitution was born under extraordinary circumstances." I think that's more true of the Declaration of Independence, but whatever. "This goes by the book," Weiss insists. "Not in a back room with a rubber hose." Kiefer just looks at him with a mixture of disgust and pity and says, "I hope you can live with that." Which is funny, after all the shit Kiefer's done over the years. With that, he lets Weiss back into the holding room. Kiefer walks down the hallway, at a loss. He checks his watch. Which reminds him…

He bursts back into the interrogation room and demands of Weiss, "How'd you get here so fast?" Like Kiefer has any right to ask that of anyone, ever. Buchanan is now in the observation room, by the way. Weiss seems confused by the question. "Who asked you to represent Mr. Prado?" Kiefer asks. Weiss looks a little flustered, but he refuses to answer. Without taking his eyes off Weiss, Kiefer asks, "Curtis, from the time of his arrest, did the suspect have time to call a lawyer?" Curtis says no. Kiefer slams out of the room, and we can see the little wheels turning under Weiss's bald pate.
