Luka explains to Ellie's family what happened to her. Her daughter asks if Ellie will stay this way forever, and Luka says she might, but she could also recover. Sam walks in and reports that Ellie is in surgery right now. One son asks if they can fix her, and Luka says they'll try, but in the meantime, he wants them to send their love and good thoughts. Ellie's daughter is upset that she called her mom a bitch. Luka is sure Ellie knows her daughter didn't mean it. One son asks if Ellie is alone, and Luka says he was about to go check on her.
As Ellie has the procedure, she recites the birth weights of her three children to try to stay focused and connected. Luka walks in and asks how she's doing. He walks up to Ellie's side and says he thought she might want to see a familiar face.
Abby and Dubenko walk into a dive bar, which doesn't seem like the best location for doing work. Abby babbles about how she plans to approach the article as Dubenko orders for them and removes her coat for her. As they sit down, Dubenko asks if she's from Chicago originally, adding that he detected "a hint of Minnesota" in her accent. Abby says quickly that she grew up in St. Paul, and tries to swing the subject back to the article. Dubenko says she just needs to write an introduction, a case summary, and the discussion. He then stammers, "Do you...do you like foreign films?" Abby smiles at him, and looks like she might be asking herself how, exactly, she got into this.
Ellie is in the middle of the procedure, and thinking about how there's something actually inside her brain right now. Luka tells her what they are doing. My favorite part is when Ellie thinks, "God, I'm bored." Because you expect sick or injured people to be either calm and religious, or manic and panicked. But it would also be boring after a while, wouldn't it? Anyway, the surgeon finds the clot, and Luka points it out on the monitor, and then explains it to Ellie. Meanwhile, Ellie thinks about how she might be tired, and might just want to let go. Her focus drifts off toward the ceiling as we go to commercial.
