Rory is running out of Kim's Antiques. Lane is close behind her. She apologizes for not telling her about CuteDean, but she assumed that Rory wouldn't want to know. Rory says she understands. She asks Rory to stop walking. Rory speeds up. Then she whips around and says that now she knows about CuteDean and life will go on. Lane asks her to not be mad. Rory says she isn't, and runs off. Lane watches her with concern as we fade to black.
Pan down to Rory in bed, moaning in her sleep. She's wearing Lorelai's Paul Frank pyjamas. Excited knocking at the door. Rory covers her head with her pillow and Lorelai walks in and jumps on the bed. She says she has a huge dilemma. Apparently she's very pretty today, and she's not sure whether she's suddenly gotten prettier, or if she just didn't realize how pretty she was until just now. Rory grumps out of bed and says she's going to take a shower. Lorelai asks Rory why she's so "charming." Rory says she had "an annoying visit from the Stars Hollow Wake-Up Fairy." Rory says she can't find her tie. Lorelai tells her that it's in the living room. It's been seeing the doily in the coffee table, and this isn't the way she wanted Rory to find out about their love. "Don't take this personally," Rory sneers. "But get out." Lorelai says that Rory's crabby, and that the best cure for that would be an all-day trip to the mall. She tells Rory to cut school and go shopping with her all day. Rory refuses. Lorelai says it might make her feel better. Rory says she feels fine, and that she doesn't want to shop. Lorelai says she knows Rory's been in a funk over CuteDean, and she shouldn't dwell on it all the time. Rory says she's going to be late for school. Lorelai tells her to meet her after school for Indian food and they'll ruin their dinner together. "Whatever," Rory mumbles as she pouts out of the room. Lorelai thanks her for the enthusiasm and asks whether "Up With People" knows about Rory.
The phone rings at Luke's. Luke answers it and takes an order as Lorelai enters carrying several bags, which she hikes onto the counter. She leaves and comes back with more bags. Luke hangs up and asks what all of this is. Lorelai says that this is everything she got at the mall, and that it only took two hours. He says it's impossible. She says she's a savant. He asks whether it's all returnable. She says it is. She makes him sit down so she can show him everything she bought. He asks for his credit card back. Lorelai hands it to him. Luke says the card looks "tired." Lorelai asks where Rachel is. She's out running some errands. Lorelai bought Rachel a copy of Out of Africa because Rachel had said she hadn't read it yet and Lorelai knows that Rory really liked the book. She also bought Rachel a new camera case. Luke says that Rachel already has one. Lorelai says that Rachel's is nylon and is falling apart and so she'd have to buy a new one anyway. She wants Luke to smell the leather, but he doesn't want to. He seems okay with that gift because it's practical. Lorelai says that she found those gifts right at the beginning of shopping, so then she wandered into Bloomingdales and there was an incredible sale on men's clothes, so she bought Luke a few things. Forty percent off on a black sweater. Soft pants that are so soft Lorelai wants to have the pants' baby. She found a belt with a great buckle for sixty percent off. Luke is trying to complain, but Lorelai is flitting around him holding up clothes and announcing sale prices, so he can only get out fragments of sentences. Lorelai also bought him some "shirt-y shirts" to go with the suit in case he didn't have any. Oh, and she bought him a suit. Maybe more than one suit. Luke asks whether anyone at the mall noticed she was going through a psychotic episode. "This suit? A hundred and seventy-five percent off." Luke says she wasn't supposed to be shopping for him. Lorelai says she thought he'd like something new to wear when he takes Rachel out tonight. Luke thanks her, but tells her to take the clothes back. Lorelai asks him to try on the suit. Luke says he likes the clothes he has. Lorelai pulls on the suit. "Okay. See this blazer? It was a hundred and seventy-five thousand percent off." Luke asks why she has a sudden need to dress him. Lorelai says she thought he might look nice in some of these things, and since they were six hundred thousand percent off, they were worth it. Luke pouts and says no. Lorelai asks if he'll just try something on like the sweater and the pants. Luke says he's not going to try any of the clothes on. Lorelai says that the lumberjack look isn't going to go out of style anytime soon, but it might be nice to look just once not "like an extra from Seven Brides For Seven Brothers." Luke tells Lorelai to take the clothes back. Lorelai asks for the jacket. She quotes Right Said Fred. Luke calls Lorelai a mental patient and runs away from her.
