It's Emily. "I need the hat rack," she says as soon as Lorelai picks up the phone. Lorelai smiles and whispers back, "The fish flies at night." Wow, they've put Lorelai in one ugly shirt. It's orange with giant Laugh-In flowers around the neck. Her black jacket is fighting a losing battle trying to cover it all up. The rest of the shirt is covered with triangles of orange, black and white. And some stripes. It looks like she's having to bus tables at a Mexican restaurant that's trying to figure out how to serve Mexican food with a Mexican flair, having never been any further south than Oklahoma. Emily is in full panic, and you can tell she is by the way she's clutching the middle buttons of her blouse together. She says she needs back the hat rack that she gave her. Michel is now listening in to Lorelai's end of the conversation. Emily says she gave Lorelai the hat rack for Christmas five years ago. Lorelai doesn't really remember it. Emily says it's large and has "dragons or weasels" or some large animal on it that you hang your coats on. Comedy Rule #92: Old rich people using "weasels" to describe any animal that is squirmy is always funny. Lorelai says that she has it. Emily says she needs it back. Lorelai can't believe that Emily is taking a Christmas present back. She also can't believe that Emily gave her an unwanted gift as a gift for Christmas. "You gave me a second-hand present. Like something you got at the junk store." Emily says that Lorelai is being a little dramatic. "What would Miss Manners say about this?" Lorelai chastises. Emily asks Lorelai to bring the rack with her when she comes to dinner tonight. Lorelai says she will. Emily thanks her and hangs up. Michel opens his mouth, so you know he got the last word in this scene, but for some reason they've cut it.

Chilton. Rory and Philllipppe are walking through the courtyard. Philllipppe says the only reason the other night happened was because he was upset over Summer. Rory says that she was just upset over CuteDean. Philllipppe says it didn't mean anything. Rory agrees. "So, that's it," Philllipppe says. "We just chalk it up to a bad night." Rory says okay. She then apologizes for crying. She says it had nothing to do with the kiss. Philllipppe says he kissed her and then she cried, so it had to have something to do with the kiss. Rory says she cried because she was confused and because she hadn't cried. She admits that it was a nice kiss. "Yeah?" Philllipppe asks as he sits down next to her. "Very nice," Rory says with a smile. "Not at all crying material." "Wanna try it again?" Philllipppe asks with a lecherous grin. "Well, I think someone is recovering from their heartbreak just fine," Rory answers. "Yeah, I'm all better," Philllipppe says, putting the pain face back on. He says he's going to swear off girls for a while. Rory laughs. Philllipppe says she doesn't believe him. She says that she thinks he could, but that it would be hard for him to do. And from what I've seen, any boy that says he's "swearing off girls for a while" is only swearing off "girls that want relationships." Girls that are ready to get down without commitment are still just fine. Rory jokes that Philllipppe would have to be put in some sort of "lock-up facility with one of those Hannibal Lecter masks." Philllipppe says it's not impossible. Rory says that maybe Philllipppe doesn't need to swear off all girls, but just a certain type of girl. She says that next time he should probably pick a girl with a little more substance. A girl that's smart, driven, and has ambition: "You know, like Paris." Philllipppe's all jigga-who? Rory says that Paris is smart and cute and interesting. "Yes, she does bring her own set of baggage into the mix." She says that Paris is crazy about him. "You want me to date Paris?" Philllipppe asks. Rory asks him to think about it. Philllipppe does. "Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship," Rory smiles. Philllipppe asks who Louie is. "Just think," Rory responds. Rory leaves. Philllipppe squints around for a few seconds and then follows.
