Damon breaks out of his Whitmore House cell and heads straight for Stefan. It must be Thursday; Elena's in trouble. Remember when she wasn't a perpetual damsel? Yeah, that was cool. They track down Aaron and use him as leverage against Dr. Wesley Maxfield. The problem is, Wes leverages Elena right back. In addition, he has what he thinks is a trump card in the form of Enzo. Wes injects Enzo with a desiccating poison, sends him out after Damon and reminds Enzo that if he doesn't return with Damon's corpse, he doesn't get the antidote.
Wes has already secreted Elena to another location. It turns out to be the condemned building in Mystic Falls (which I haven't forgotten is a few hours away), which once housed her father's medical practice. They're in the basement, where Gilbert continued his off-book, unregulated vampire research. Said research was largely funded by the late Megan's parents, because Grayson used vampire blood (unbeknownst to them) to cure Megan of her (beknownst to them) congenital heart defect.
While Wes experiments on her, Elena has hallucination-induced flashbacks of her childhood. We can tell the seven-ish year old girl on our screen is a wee Elena almost immediately, because the first time we see her, she's wearing a royal blue henley. Remember when a similar shirt was nearly human Elena's uniform? Yeah, that was cool, too.
On Wes's orders, Damon and Stefan bring Aaron to Wes's lecture hall, where they find Enzo waiting for him. Enzo has been an Augustine prisoner for about 70 years, so he really just wants someone to listen, yo. Sometimes, listening is not in Damon's wheelhouse. Since Elena is in danger (again), this is one of those times.
Once the Salvatores realize Wes isn't going to exchange Elena for Aaron, Damon agrees to stay with Enzo, while Stefan and Aaron decamp to Aaron's dorm to review the Whitmore dossier, for clues as to where Maxfield is holding Elena. Silly, simple Aaron thinks he can get the jump on Stefan Salvatore, the scariest vampire in any town. He is so, so very wrong. Still Stefan takes pity on the boy. And he's all ears, as Aaron relates to him Damon's vengeance quest against generation upon generation of Whitmores.
Eventually, Enzo succumbs to the poison. Damon rescues him and injects him with everything labeled "antidote" in Maxfield's Whitmore House lab. Damon is looking for gratitude and forgiveness, as well as an Alaric substitute, but Enzo tells him he'll always be a monster. Meanwhile, Stefan finds and saves Elena, just as Wes is about to inject her with serum that will turn her into a vampire-blood craving Ripper. That is, the needle is already in her lovely bosom, but I don't think Wes ever depresses the plunger.
The rest of the episode is about Katherine and Nadia's desire to save her (by trying to convince Katherine to cast a Traveler spell that will put her essence into someone else's body). Since Katherine (who suffers another attack of grey hair, not just on roots, but on long hair that was already colored, and hey, that's not only not fair, it's not accurate) knows Stefan is rather fond of the body she's in, she'd rather not switch. Later, when Stefan makes it clear the night was a case of being swept up in the moment, Kiki changes her mind about the possession spell. Gee, I wonder whose body Katherine will choose to possess -- said no one, ever. The thing is, before Kiki can get to work, she has a heart attack.
"Fifty Shades of Grayson," is so titled, because while Elena is in Maxfield's clutches, she learns a lot more about her dad, including things she didn't want to know. Later, when she's safely tucked away at Mossy Manse, she defends her dad to Damon, which makes him break up with her. Oh, he's not pissed that her love for her father is blind. He's just spent the day with Enzo, who has made Damon take a look at his own monstrous side. Now Damon is convinced that he is no good for Elena, and that she'll be better off without him.
I usually make it a rule not to comment on actors' personal lives. Still, this week, I kept wanting to see that Meredith Fell was once involved with the Augustines, and that Grayson had been her mentor. Since Torrey DeVitto and Paul Wesley are divorcing, that seems less than likely. Similarly, for months, I have tried to ignore all the press about Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev's breakup, but when Damon broke things off with Elena, I couldn't help but go there. Real life aside, if I ignore all the characterization objections I bemoaned in last week's recap, "Fifty Shades of Grayson," is a pretty tight ride. The seemingly obvious path we're on feels a bit like fan fiction: Katherine decides to possess Elena's body, and shags both Salvatores for all she's worth, but I'm feeling the fun. What about you?
I'll be back with the recap, ASAP. In the meantime, please grade the episode at the top of the page, and then come on over to the forum, where we're cleaning out our pocketbooks, and taking our calcium and Vitamin D supplements.
Want more? The full recap starts right below!Previously on The Vampire Diaries, I divorced myself from this show's past, because apparently all that stuff that looked like character development was just a joke.
Now on The Vampire Diaries, in his Whitmore House cell, Damon punches the fieldstone wall, until he frees a rock. He flashes back to the memory of Aaron dropping ammo as he tried to load his gun. Damon lies on the floor, reaches out between the cell bars and retrieves a bullet. He loads it into the keyhole of his cell, and then bangs on it with a rock. The bullet explodes, but the cell remains locked. Still, it was a pretty clever try. At least this new Damon I've never really gotten to know has his wits about him. Damon vents his frustration by kicking at the cell door. It finally pops open. Wow, this new Damon I've never really gotten to know has temper tantrums that are productive rather than destructive. Who'da thunk?
Mossy Manse. Katherine -- sporting some new grays -- wakes to Stephen and she's about to cuddle with him, until she notices her hair is also falling out in clumps. Cheer up, Kiki -- at least it's the gray hairs abandoning ship. Katherine's, "Oh my God," wakes Stephen, but she tells him not to turn around, covers up with a blanket and sneaks out of the room.
Dressed and wearing a baseball cap, Katherine runs into Damon on her way out. He's looking for Elena, but Katherine hasn't seen her, so Damon yells out to his brother. Katherine wastes no time telling Damon she spent the night with his Stefan. Damon gets grossed out, which seems un-Damon-y to me, but then I remember this is a new character from the one I thought I knew.
Elena wakes in a lab. She hallucinates/flashes back to her past (we can hear a child giggle), until Wes starts dictating into his recorder. Being Wes, he is unforthcoming with details. He knocks Elena out in preparation for blood dialysis. I don't think people are knocked out for dialysis. I'd Google, but then I'd forget for the fifth time this week that I hadn't already finished this recap.
Back at Mossy Manse, Damon gives Stefan a brief history about being held captive and shot in the head, and that he's currently missing their girlfriend v.2. He asks Stefan about his night, but Stefan doesn't want to answer that question and of course he thinks it's more pertinent that Damon can't find Elena. Damon suspects that Maxfield is responsible for Elena's disappearance and tells Stefan to put on his "hero hair" so they can go find her. At least this new Damon still gets some good, snarky dialogue. We cut to...
Whitmore College -- you know, the place that is a few hours away from Mystic Falls. The Salvatores find leverage to use against Maxfield in the person of Aaron (whom I keep wanting to call Jesse, so if a living character named Jesse does something in this recap, assume it's Aaron). Damon approaches him first and wastes no time in threatening to kill the boy, if that's what it'll take to get Elena back from Wes. When Aaron tries to run, Stefan stands in his way.
Back at his lab, Wes dictates that he has drained 54.1 pints of blood and is surprised that Elena is still conscious. Fifteen years ago, Subject faded after 2.9 pints. "Evolution or luck? A mystery for another day." He shuts off the recorder, which -- thank goodness. Elena asks what he's doing. She strains against her bonds, but he tells her to relax; he'll release her… eventually. Elena says her friends will find her. Wes mocks her heroic vampire friends and goes on about how Damon was the "curse" that haunted Aaron's family. He wonders how someone justifies that. Elena pushes back and asks Wes to justify what he's doing to her. Maxfield: "Science." He then reads her some notes on electrocuting vampires. Elena calls Wes a monster. Wes tells her he's reading her father's hand-written journal. "Everything I'm doing to you, I learned from him." Is anyone else out there old enough to flashback to this Anti-Drug PSA?
Back on campus, Aaron tells the Salvatores he has no idea where Wes took Elena. When Aaron asks who Stefan is, Damon says he's his brother, and then adds, "I'd watch your tone with him, because he's kind of in the midst of a psychotic break." Wait. Is Damon -- who just last episode informed Aaron that he's killed generations of his family -- now trying to assign the bad cop role to Stefan? Stefan doesn't even know about all that yet, but still he objects. "I'm what?" Damon reveals he knows about Katherine. Stefan says Damon is jealous. Damon says he's disturbed. Aaron turns back to Damon. "How are you not dead? I shot you." Damon, who is sitting to the kid on a couch, has his arm behind the boy like they're buds. He leans in and says, "Well, 'cause you went for the head. You've gotta go for the heart." He dope slaps Aaron. "Go for the heart time. Now where's Elena?" Damon, who made you stupid in the course of eight minutes? You really should stick to the bad cop role and let Stefan be good cop. Play to your strengths. That said, if you insist on trying otherwise, perhaps you don't tell this kid how to kill vampires. Damon says to call Wes and tell him to give up Elena or his experiment will be sewing Aaron's arms back onto his torso.
Mystic Falls Lab. Elena hallucinates about her seven-ish year old self entering the clinic basement. You can tell that it's Elena, because she's wearing a blue Henley, like she did back in the good old days of this show. I always liked that Elena wore the same thing more than once, provided it wasn't a ball gown for a formal Event O' the Week. Wee Elena (Kayla Madison) hears scary sounds coming from behind a door and runs back up the stairs.
Back in the present, Elena asks Wes when he met her dad. He says Grayson was working with Augustine to craft a magical cure-all to fight disease, cure cancer and save the world. She asks if Grayson ever brought a vampire down there. Wes doesn't answer, so Elena says she remembers being creeped out by this place when she was little. She also tells Wes she saw Enzo when she woke. "I know he's alive. Where is he?" Wes says he sent him on a day-trip to find Damon. Elena strains against her bonds. "What did you do? What did you do?" We cut a few hours away, to...
Whitmore College. Aaron leads Damon and Stefan into a lecture hall. Enzo is already waiting there and greets his old friend and Judas as, "." Damon is all Enzo? Enzo says, "It's been a while, mate." Commercial.
When Stefan asks who he is, Enzo says, "Lorenzo, but my friends call me Enzo. Kidding -- I don't have any friends." He holds out his hand, but Stefan refuses to shake it, and instead turns to Damon, in hopes of an explanation. Damon says Enzo is another Augustine. "Our cells were to each other." Damon then tells Enzo they're there to meet Maxfield. "Do you know him?" Enzo: "That's your first question to me -- not how are you? How did you survive in that fire I left you to die in?" Aaron asks what's going on. Enzo would love to elaborate. He's been waiting 70 years to tell his story.
Back at the lab, Elena asks Wes if Enzo is the Augustine and if he killed Megan. Wes tells her to conserve her energy for Phase 2. Elena figures he's not going to tell her what that is. He says if it works, she'll be the first to know. Elena asks why Megan had a picture of herself with Dr. Gilbert. Wes says Megan's family helped fund a lot of Dr. Gilbert's projects. All they knew was that Gilbert had an unregulated compound where he could cure most injuries. Elena whispers, "Vampire blood." I want Meredith back on this show, stat. I know it probably won't happen, but she should be here. Wes says as Megan grew up, she grew suspicious, went to Whitmore, roomed with Gilbert's daughter, went to a party at Whitmore house and stuck her nose where it didn't belong. Elena figures she found Enzo in his cell. Think Elena. Think. I bet Megan was onto Wes, and he sent Enzo after her.
Stefan calls Wes. He wants Elena back and says he has Aaron and is wondering how to kill him. Wes says he's wondering how Elena will function without her cerebral cortex. She doesn't seem to use it nearly as much as she did in the first two seasons, so she'd probably be fine. Still, I scream at Elena to yell out that she is in her dad's clinic. She ignores me. See what I mean?
Back in the lecture hall, Enzo lectures Aaron on his history with Damon. When Stefan returns with news that they are at a stalemate with Wes, Enzo is annoyed by the interruption. Damon asks if Wes isn't worried because they have Aaron. Stefan says, "He doesn't care. He's willing to risk it." Enzo really wants someone to hear his story. Aaron offers to talk to Wes. Damon says, "What part of 'he doesn't care' isn't registering?" Enzo rips out one of the hall's seats and smashes it. "Where were we? Ah, right. I was telling my story and you were all politely listening. Huh." He talks about his deal with Damon but we just saw all of this shit last week. Fire bad. Enzo pretty. Damon leaves him to die. Stefan eyes Damon and then states the obvious. Enzo says he's only alive because was spared by one of the scientists, and doomed to another 50 years of lab-rattery. Feeling he's earned the break, Enzo takes off for something to wet his whistle.
Stefan turns to Damon. "You didn't tell me about him." Damon says, "It was the 1950s. What? I'm supposed to remember every moment of my life." Wow, that did not sound like Damon (original recipe or extra crispy). It sounds like the writers anticipated audience objections to Damon's decades long vengeance quest, and thought they could head them off in this awkward dialogue. Ick. Even Damon seems embarrassed by it, so he remembers himself and asks, "Now do you want to kill Aaron or should I?" Stefan still wants to talk about Damon's non-reaction to Enzo, so Damon decides he'll kill the kid. Don't be silly, Damon. You can't kill this character that fast. He's white.
Aaron volunteers that he has a huge dossier full of information about his family history. Damon is doubtful of such a timely revelation. "If you're lying, I'm going to take my thumbs and I'm going to gouge out your sad little eyes, out of your sad little head." Enzo returns with a bottle of something. Stefan tells them they're going with Plan B. Enzo says Damon's staying right there, since he knows how ornery Enzo gets, when he doesn't get his way. Damon tells Stefan to head off with Aaron. "Call me if you find anything. Kill him if you don't." We cut to...
Mossy Manse. Nadia thinks that since Katherine is a Traveler by heritage, she can learn how to do the passenger spell and keep living inside someone else's body. Katherine says her father banned them from doing Traveler magic, and then she became a vampire and never thought of it, again. Nadia says it's still in her blood, so she has the ability to live in someone else's body and reminds Katherine about how Gregor possessed Matt. Katherine says, "The thing is, Stefan actually likes this body." When Nadia asks what she's talking about, our Kiki says she and Stefan may have rekindled their flame last night. Nadia realizes that's why Katherine was asking about forgiveness. "You were asking about him, not me." Katherine doesn't want to die a sad, lonely 538-year-old. "Knowing Stefan still cares might not be the worst way to go." Nadia eyes are brimming with tears. She nods. "No. You had it right the first time. Go kill yourself. See if anyone misses you." She swans off. We cut back to the...
Whitmore Lecture Hall. Enzo asks if Cricket ever because a thing in the States. I thought Enzo didn't like sports. Maybe that was just Damon. Apparently I didn't care enough last week, to quote it. Anyhow, Enzo says that's a shame, because Cricket is a fun sport. He says he took up drawing for a while, but had no pencil, so he pricked his finger and used it to paint his cell wall with blood.
Damon asks if Enzo wants him to feel guilty. He insists he couldn't save Enzo. Now, he just wants to save Elena. Enzo doubles over in pain. Wes injected him with a poison that will stop his heart. He'll desiccate if he doesn't return for the antidote. Damon says that's all the more reason to tell Damon where Wes is. They can save Elena, get the antidote and kill Wes together. Enzo asks if Damon ever thought about it all after he left. Damon says, "Look at me. If you go back, we go back together. We finish this for good. C'mon." He holds out his hand. Being more polite to Damon than Stefan was to him, Enzo shakes it. Oh, scratch that etiquette comment. Enzo squeezes Damon's hand and says, "You're not going to see your girl again, Damon." Damon cringes as Enzo breaks his hand. Enzo wants the antidote and Wes told him not to come back until Damon was dead. Well, that's not going to happen, Enzo. He's in the opening credits. Enzo snaps Damon's neck and simultaneously flings him across the room and out the window. Only Elijah's quarters through the window stunt was cooler. Commercial.
Outside, Damon has landed on the hood of a car. Shards of the windshield surround him. Enzo comes at him. Damon says he's not going to fight. Enzo asks if he's going to run, then. "You're good at that." All Damon wants is to find his girl. Enzo says his only thought for the past 50 years was killing Damon. He throttles Damon, but then is overcome by pain. Damon tries to help him, but it's too late. Enzo immediately desiccates. This college must be home to the most incurious students in America, because not one person has noticed any of this. We cut to...
Aaron's dorm. Aaron pretends he's going for his files, but instead grabs the gun. Stefan outsmarts and disarms him. Throttling Aaron, Stefan tells Aaron he will kill him. "Do not test me." Aaron tells Stefan how Damon already planned his death since before he was born. He runs down Damon's 60-year-long revenge plan against the Whitmore family. "So go ahead and do it. Kill me, because I don't want to give Damon the satisfaction -- so do it. Do it!" Stefan says not all of them are like Damon and starts to walk out. Aaron calls him back and hands over everything Wes gave him on Augustine. "I saw Elena's last name on a few pages. Maybe it will help." Stefan opens the file, and then looks at Aaron. We cut to the...
Mystic Falls Lab. Elena hallucinates/remembers her childhood. Wee Elena sneaks down to the basement, where she hears screams and all manner of racket coming from behind the door of a creepy room. Her dad (Jason MacDonald) stops her and reminds her she's not supposed to be down there. Wee Elena tells him she heard screams. Dad assures her today is a good day. He's going to save a little girl's life -- a girl who's just about Elena's age. Megan, anyone?
In the present, Wes tells Elena he has good news. The sample cells mutated. His compound worked. Did he give her cancer? Oh, no, he conditioned her to salivate at the smell of vampire blood. All right, that's pretty cool… until I think about it. How did hemodialysis accomplish that? Did he even give Elena any blood to sniff? How come it took less than a day? He had Jesse for something like two weeks. Whoa, why did I just talk myself out of liking this development? I am my own worst enemy. Anyhow, the problem (from Elena's perspective) is that this will make her a ripper who craves vampire blood. Sorry, Team Delena. Commercial.
After the break, Wes narrates into his recorder that Subject is ready for compound injection. Why is her number so much higher than Jesse's number was? I can't remember it exactly, but I remember I Googled his number and found out it was the zip code for (I think) Auburn, Illinois. I never bothered sharing that, because who cares? And no, I don't know why I'm sharing it now. Look, I want my hiatus, bitches.
Elena begs for mercy. Wes tells her she'll be doing the world a favor. He might not be able to kill vampires, but she will. He jabs her with the hypo -- through her shirt, right in the boob. Elena, if you get out of this, you should sue him for sexual harassment. Before Wes can inject the compound, Stefan calls out for her. Wes still hasn't depressed the plunger. Elena headbutts Wes. He falls back and takes the hypo with him, so I *think* she hasn't received the compound. Stefan frees Elena and helps her to her feet. On their way out, she grabs her dad's notes. Sadly, Stefan neither kills Wes, nor picks up the hypo. We cut to...
Mystic Grill Patio. Nadia is waiting for Matt. He tells her they're closing. She tries to reminiscence about the night they met. Matt would like to leave that in the past. Nadia says she just needs Matt to hold onto Gregor's Traveler's Knife for her. She's leaving the Falls and needs to know it is safe. She thought she could convince Katherine to live a little longer, but if she changes her mind, she'll need the knife a little longer. Matt says Katherine only cares about herself. He stops when he notices Nadia's tears. She tells him she searched for her mother for 500 years. She doesn't know whether to hate Katherine for giving up or be at her side when she dies. Matt gets the crappy parenting thing. He tells Nadia about his mother. Nadia figures he knows what it's like to hold onto hope that just once, your mother will do what you want. Matt takes Nadia by the hand and says, "If she changes her mind, the knife will be with me." We cut to the...
Whitmore College Lab. Enzo wakes to find Damon has injected him with a bunch of different substances labeled antidote. "Apparently, one of them worked." Enzo says this is a pathetic attempt at making amends. Damon doesn't care about amends. "My girlfriend is safe, so technically I'm not suffering and it would really suck if you desiccated in vain." When Enzo flies at him, Damon shoves his hand into Enzo's chest and grabs hold of his heart. Now it's time for his side of the story. He hasn't thought about Enzo, because in order to save himself and leave Enzo, Damon had to shut off his humanity. "I flipped the switch, and then I felt nothing. No remorse. No regret. No pain." Enzo asks if he feels any of that now. "Even if I forgave you Damon, would that make you less of a horrible person?" Damon lets go of Enzo's heart and tells him they're even. Enzo says, "You were the most important person in my life, and you ruined me, but that's just who you are. That's who you'll always be -- a monster." Yeah, we get it show. Why do I suddenly feel like I'm in Ace's living room, surviving an anvil attack? Commercial.
Mossy Manse. Damon watches Elena, who is reading by the fire. His face fills with regret. When he brings her a cup of tea, she tells him about her father's journal. She figures Megan is the little girl her dad once told her about. When Megan was seven, a congenital heart defect left her with a life expectancy of a couple of months. One injection of vampire blood saved her life. Damon says, "A hundred pages of horrific torture and you find the one happy passage." Elena says her dad used his research to save people. Damon: "Yeah, and dissected vampires, along the way. News flash, Elena: You are a vampire. Do you honestly think he would sit here and see you as anything more?" Elena doesn't know, but she can't not defend her own dad. Damon says he knows that, since she does it for him all the time. Mostly, she just ignores your shit, Damon, but point taken.
Elena isn't trying to defend his vengeance quest against Aaron's whole family. When she makes a little dig about continuing it, after they got together, Damon asks why she's there. "I'm bad, Elena. I am bad for you, so why wouldn't you have run away from me as far as humanly possible?" Elena says, "Because I love you, Damon. Because I chose you. And because I stand by my choice."
Damon says now he's choosing. "I'm choosing to let you go." Elena rejects that. Damon says he's choosing to relieve her of having to defend him regarding every awful thing he ever did. Elena tells him to stop acting like he's perfect and reminds him that she too has done horrible things. She says she isn't going to judge him after learning he was tortured for five years. Damon yells, "Stop defending me!" His voice softens. "I won't change who I am. I can't. But I refuse to change you." He walks away, leaving Elena looking like a lost little girl. She tries to compose herself, but breaks down.
Upstairs, Katherine examines herself for signs of aging. Stefan arrives at the door and asks if he can come in or if she's going to freak again. She tells him she's getting wrinkles. Stefan laughs. "Katherine Pierce's chickens come home to roost in the form of wrinkles. It's kind of brilliant." Katherine is not amused. She's in his room because she wants to talk about last night. When Stefan agrees, she orders him to talk. Stefan says, "Well, it was a long day. We had a moment and we got swept up in it." Katherine asks if he memorized that from a book. Stefan asks if she expects him to forget everything she's put him through for nearly a century and a half.
Katherine fights back her tears. "I'm dying, Stefan." He knows she is and is sure she'll figure a way out of it. She tells him it's for real this time, takes off her hat, shows him her grey hairs and asks, "What does someone have to go through, to get a little redemption around here?" Stefan says, "147 years is a long time to forgive in one night." Katherine says, "One night. An eternity. You'd never look at me, the way you look at Elena… would you?" When he can't answer, Katherine says goodnight and starts to leave. He stops her and grabs her hand. Katherine's face crumples. Stefan says, "I'm sorry that you're dying." After a long pause, Katherine says, "Trust me. I am, too." She walks out.
Aaron finds Wes unconscious in the lab. He rouses him and drags him to his feet, then asks if he thinks he's helping people with "this vampire crap." Aaron yells at Wes for using his life as a bargaining chip, and then throws his guardian back to the floor. Before leaving, Aaron grabs the hypo and tells Wes he never wants to see him again. "Get the hell out of my life."
Mossy Manse. A tearful Elena tosses Grayson's journal in the fire.
Katherine is still in the house, too. Over the phone she asks, "So, do we have a deal? You'll find me a Traveler who will teach me how to do the spell?" Nadia says, "I guess this means you want to live?" Katherine says, "I'm a survivor. Staying alive is my specialty." Nadia assumes Stefan inspired this change of heart. Katherine says she thinks Stefan believes a part of her can still be redeemed. Nadia asks Katherine if he's right. The weight of Katherine's hand bag seems to break her left arm or wrist. She drops it and the phone and looks at her bag, and then she clutches her chest and gulps. Oh, left arm! She's having a heart attack! Who even knew she had a heart? Katherine tumbles down the stairs and winds up unconscious on the landing. Over the phone, Nadia calls her name. Title card.
So Katherine is going to possess Elena and shag both brothers, yes? There must already be fan fiction with that plot. Is Aaron going to shoot up Damon with the Vampire-Blood Ripper serum? Will it matter that the needle had pierced Elena's doppelicious skin? What do you think?
It's time for a little hiatus, so I'm done thinking. The show and I will return on January 23, 2014. In the meantime, please grade the episode at the top of the page, and then come on over to the forum, where we're cleaning out our pocketbooks, and taking our calcium and Vitamin D supplements.
