Okay, so the show starts with Ty sitting on the steps where Jerry just got shot, and he's looking at all the puddles of blood and watching people take pictures of the scene and taking items and bagging them. Too bad it isn't Bosco's blood all over the place. So a detective asks Ty if he saw the shooter, and Ty tells him he didn't see anyone but he thought the guy went up to the roof, and the detective is totally giving Ty a hard time about chasing someone he didn't even see instead of securing the building. Sullivan comes down the stairs and tells the detective to lay off Ty -- if he wants to go off on someone, he should go off on Sullivan. Boy, Sullivan, it hasn't taken you long to become a father figure. So for some reason Sullivan thinks he has an idea of who the shooter may be, but of course the detective blows him off and doesn't want to hear about it.
Cut to the hospital, and Jerry's wife is pacing around the waiting room while holding a sleeping four-year-old and babbling on about how Jerry didn't have to go to that bad neighborhood and how he had seniority and didn't have to do that kind of work, yadda yadda yadda. Oh, how original -- the older veteran cop has a young wife. That's something you never see.
Cut to Ty and Sullivan in their car, and Ty is all, "I screwed up" and Sullivan is all, "You made a bad call and you'll learn from it." "Bad call"? That's it? The kid repeatedly did what Sullivan told him NOT to do, and let some psycho get away, and all Sullivan says is that he made a bad call? Ty needs a smack upside the head from his mother. So Sullivan puts on the flashing lights and tells Ty that a woman from the building told him that the first guy who got shot hung out with some head case named Michael Daniels, and they have to find him. Ty is all, "Shouldn't we tell the detectives?" and Sullivan is all, "Did they seem receptive to you?" And I should hope they wouldn't be receptive to some fool kid on his first night on the job and the veteran who lets him run wild.
Cut to Yokas finishing a call to her husband on a pay phone. She walks over to Bosco who is leaning against their car and is all, "It's hard to believe, huh?" and Bosco is all, "Medics aren't supposed to go in without us when shots have been fired. If you don't follow procedure this is what can happen." From the man who lives by the book, insight on how to follow procedures. Hello, pot? This is the kettle -- you're black! So anyway, Sullivan drives past them with his lights on and Bosco sees this and blows his load and they rush to get into their car and follow Sullivan.
Cut to Sullivan parking his car outside an apartment building. He gets out and says, "Crap," as Bosco drives up to him. Funny, I always say that when I see Bosco too. Bosco asks Sullivan if he's got anything and Sullivan is all, "Maybe. If we need help we'll call for you." And Bosco gives his patented "whatever" face and goes, "Yeah, right," and walks past him into the building, and Sully grouses that "he doesn't even know where he's going" and Yokas grouses back, "Like that's ever stopped him before." And I'm hoping that Bosco will start walking up the stairs and get shot point-blank four times.
Unfortunately Bosco doesn't get shot, and the scene cuts to Bosco, Sullivan, Ty, and Yokas walking up the stairs together, and Bosco is telling Ty to put his extra ammo at the front of his belt and that Ty should get a back-up gun like Bosco has in a holster on his left leg, and Sullivan says, "If he falls he'll explode." And Bosco gives him a "whatever" face. As they get to the apartment they think the shooter is in, Yokas is all, "Okay, what happens ? You guys unzip and I get a tape measurer?" and Sullivan is all, "It won't take much more than a kiddie ruler for Bosco," and Bosco bellows, "YARDSTICK!" and Ty starts giggling, and Bosco and Sullivan give him a look and shush him. Oh, I see, those guys can talk as loud as they want, but if someone else makes a sound, forget it. And how clever for the writers to have a woman suggest that the men compare penis sizes. I wonder who they stole that from and made lame. So anyway, they bust into this apartment and all they find is a runaway girl hanging out there.
Cut to Kim and Bobby responding to a call. As they walk to some back alley, they see that the thirteen-year-old girl they helped in the park has OD'd again and gotten dumped in the alley. The woman who called 911 is talking to Bobby and she says she is from New Jersey for some reason, and all I have to say about her accent is that, if the show is filmed on location in New York City, I would think that they could find an actress that has a real Jersey accent and some chick from L.A. with a sorry-ass Jersey-Girl-wannabe accent. So anyway, the non-Jersey Jersey Girl thinks that Bobby is groovy, but Bobby doesn't really pay attention to her, and Kim is slightly amused by it all.
Cut to Sullivan and Ty in the locker room of the precinct. Sullivan is walking out and Ty is still in the shower, but there is only a low wall between the showers and the lockers, so Ty sees Sullivan leaving and asks him if he wants get something to eat, and Sullivan says no, and then Ty is all, "Hey Sul, I'll see you tomorrow." And Sullivan is all, "Right." And he leaves, and that scene seemed so uncomfortable to both of them and really unnecessary as well. I guess the producers thought the ladies at home would like to see a little beefcake, because Ty does have a nice chest.
Cut to Yokas at home, making sandwiches for her kids for school, and if her husband was home all night, why didn't he get off his lazy ass and make the sandwiches? She's out all night making the streets safe for everyone, so maybe he could put a little more effort into raising his kids by slapping some cold cuts on some bread for them. Maybe I expect too much. So anyway, Yokas tells him what happened that night, and he hints that the A&P needs a night stock guy, and she is all, "No stock job at the A&P is going to pay you $30,000 a year," and they bicker for a bit about her job and him wanting her to stay home, yadda yadda yadda. They hug and make up. You know, I would hope that Mayor Giuliani would pay his police force more than $30,000 a year -- I don't know how anyone could live in the city with a family on that amount. Or maybe the writers just didn't bother researching the pay rates of NYC policemen and just threw out a number. Yeah, I'd believe that.
Cut to Carlos sitting around at the station and talking to Bobby about how he froze during the shooting and couldn't help, and Bobby is all, "Do you need a ride home?" Hey Bobby -- way to talk to the new guy and make him feel better. You always know exactly what to say. Not. I guess the writers couldn't find a "feel better" speech to crib from, so they gave Bobby almost no lines.
Cut to Kim walking home, and she sees Jimmy waiting for her outside her building to see if she was okay, and he gives her a belated birthday gift. A bulletproof vest. Aw -- how romantic. How random. Gee, I wonder if, at some time in the future, Kim will get shot at.
Cut to Doc at the hospital with Jerry's wife, and Jerry's wife is still holding that kid. She must have arms of steel or something. The surgeon comes into the waiting room and tells them that Jerry made it through the surgery and he is in extremely critical condition, and that immediate family can see him. Jerry's wife finally gives the kid to someone else to hold, and amazingly all this time the kid never wakes up. So she asks Doc to go with her, saying that he is family, but he doesn't think he should go. So as she walks away, you can see what she's wearing, and her jeans look just like the jeans Yokas had on when she was making sandwiches. You would think that the costume designers would have some originality, since the only time they can cut loose with the costumes is when people don't have to wear uniforms. But I guess I'm asking too much.
Cut to the precinct, and the captain talking about Jerry getting shot and who might have done it. Michael Daniels is a schizophrenic who has gone off his meds, and his mother told the officers that he believes agents of the government are out to get him, and Bosco is all, "They sure are now." And I'm all, "Gee, Bosco, you sure are observant. How come you haven't been promoted to detective yet?" And they are all told to stay away from his apartment, and if they get a call from that neighborhood, they should get a plain-clothes officer to take care of it. So then they all go to get their radios, and Ty is in line with Bosco, and Bosco starts making fun of Sullivan and Ty starts laughing. Um, Ty, it's your second day on the force -- maybe you should show a little respect to the man who you have known all your life and is showing you the ropes? What would your beloved mother think? So Bosco gets his radio and he is all pissed off because he gets one that never works right (that one must not be an Ericsson radio) and he bitches that "I had this radio three days last week!" and the guy who issued the radio says, "Only because I get two days off!" What a fan club Bosco has. And then Bosco goes to Ty, "If you want to be a real cop, get the hell away from Sullivan as fast as you can." And if Ty is willing to take advice from Bosco, I've got a few acres of oceanfront property in Arizona I'd like to sell him.
Cut to the fire station, and Mad Tooth is lying on his side and looking like road-kill. Carlos is trying to get him to eat a bowl of food he put out, but the dog won't touch it. Bobby says the dog is waiting for Jerry. Oh yeah, like he ate so much when Jerry shoved that bowl of food in his face the day before. So Carlos says he met Jerry's wife and kids and asks if Jerry is gay or not, and Bobby asks, "Did he do that 'when was the last time you were with a man' thing?" and Carlos says, "He grabbed my ass." And Bobby is all, "The first day, he kissed me." And Kim adds, "Yeah, but you liked it." Oh, the comedy! And then Bobby tells Carlos about the time some other guy joined the squad, and on the first night Jerry put all the bunks in the middle of the room and he got all the guys to strip naked, and when the new guy walked into the room he saw everything and Jerry told him, "Your bunk is in the middle." And of course everyone just starts laughing, because we all know that making people think that you are gay is one of the funniest things you could do to break the ice. No, not really. I wonder if they did that for Kim's first day. And then Doc comes in and acts all uptight and then the so-called fun is over. Boo hoo.
Cut to Bosco and Yokas, with Bosco yammering on about how psychos stop taking their meds and commit crimes and hurt people, and then the taxpayers have to pay for them to go to a mental hospital only to get released a few months later, and then they stop taking their meds again and hack up more people. And then he goes into a spiel about how, in the good ol' days, posses used to round up the mentally ill and cut their ears off or something, and at this point I'm giving the TV a big "whatever" face. Yeah, Bosco -- mental illness is cured by cutting off ears. Then Bosco's radio goes off and squeals in his ear (because the radio doesn't work right), and Yokas wants to know, "Did Riley give you 43 again?" and Bosco is all, "I think he's got some kind of problem with me." And Yokas reminds him, "Yeah, you hit him in the back of the head with a nightstick." And I'm upset that Riley didn't hit Bosco in the back of the head instead of the other way around. Bosco says that it was Riley's fault because he got in the way. Whatever. Yokas tells him to turn off his radio and they'll just use hers.
Cut to Kim and Bobby in the ambulance. Bobby asks Kim where she got the bullet proof jacket, and she tells him, and he thinks it's a good idea for her to wear one because of what happened, and because she has a kid. And Kim is all bitching about how she won't wear it just because Bobby or Jimmy or her mother tells her to, and that she is a good mother. So Bobby is all, "So, you're not going to wear it?" And Kim just gets all pissed.
Cut to Ty and Sullivan in their car, and Ty asks Sullivan for details about his father's killing, and Sullivan won't tell him anything. They stop by the side of the road and Sullivan asks a guy selling cheap watches if he has seen Michael Daniels, and to get in touch with him if he has any information on the guy.
Cut to Carlos and Doc in the ambulance. Carlos asks if Doc wants to talk about what happened. Doc says no and parks the ambulance and tells Carlos to stay in the "rig" while he goes to get something.
Cut to Bosco and Yokas, walking up to Kim and Bobby as they patch up a drunk who fell and hurt himself. Yokas notices that Kim is wearing a bulletproof vest under her shirt and they joke about how it makes her look like she's wearing a barrel, and Bosco leers, "You look pretty good to me." And Yokas is all, "Yeah, but your idea of a dirty magazine is Soldier of Fortune." Wow. What a witty comeback. So Kim and Bobby leave, and Bosco is all, "Did you have to embarrass me like that?" and Yokas is all, "Sorry. I'll go back to letting you do it yourself." I'm getting embarrassed that I tell people I watch this show. So Bosco is about to just leave the drunk where he is and Yokas tells him they need to get the drunk out of the park because kids play there.
Cut to Sullivan and Ty in their car. Ty apologizes for bringing up his dad. They see Doc's "rig," and Sullivan parks to it and gets out and tells Ty to stay in the car. Ty notices Carlos sitting in the "rig," so he gets out of the car and walks over to introduce himself, and complains to Carlos about Sullivan being "a bitch." Gee, Ty, maybe if you actually did what Sullivan told you to do, he wouldn't seem like such a "bitch."
Cut to Doc and Sullivan in a diner, drinking coffee and talking about Jerry and his condition and wondering why they've never quit. Boy, nice of them to make their new partners sit outside while they socialize. Maybe they'll bring out doggy-bags for Ty and Carlos. Whatever.
Cut to Yokas and Bosco trying to take the drunk to a rehab, but the drunk is banned because he had been there before and bit the director. As they discuss the fact that they can't find a place to bring this guy, the drunk is yelling, "Officer!" from inside the car and Bosco yells, "Shut up!" back at him, and then he suggests they find some out-of-the-way place and dump him. Is that procedure, Bosco? So Yokas suggests they find a church program, and meanwhile the drunk is still yelling, "Officer!" and Bosco is still yelling "Shut up!" and asking Yokas what her problem is, and Yokas tells him that if someone had taken care of Michael Daniels when he went off his meds, maybe Jerry would not have gotten hurt, so they shouldn't ignore a problem until it's too late. Bosco is all, "Not going into a dangerous situation without backup is going to keep you from getting shot!" and as he informs Yokas that he isn't going to save every drunk they come across, a look of satisfaction comes over the drunk's face, and when Bosco gets in the car, he jumps right back out again all disgusted because the drunk took a dump in the car. That silly drunk -- he sure showed Bosco a thing or two about telling people to shut up! What a fresh idea the writers used -- a drunk making a monkey out of a cop!
Cut to Ty and Sullivan on a corner, talking to a woman named Amber. She called them to tell them that she took the clothes and wallet of a customer who started to get rough with her. She handcuffed him and then took his stuff and ran off, and the only thing she kept was the money he owed her. Sullivan says he'll help Amber if she can get him info on Michael Daniels. So Ty is all, "So she's a prostitute, huh?" and Sullivan says all sarcastically, "Can't slip nothing past you," which is exactly what I was thinking.
Cut to Kim and Bobby in the ambulance; Kim asks Bobby why he isn't interested in Dana, and Bobby tells her he's interested in someone else but it's complicated, and Kim thinks that there isn't really anyone else and that as soon as Bobby realizes Dana is perfect for him, Dana will have gotten married to one of the ER doctors. And for some reason it surprises Bobby that the doctors are interested in Dana, and Kim is all, "thirty grand a year versus two hundred thousand. Gee, I wonder who I'd pick?" And what is the deal with everyone on this show making $30,000 a year and why do they keep mentioning it?
Cut to Carlos and Doc in the ambulance. Carlos confesses to Doc that, when Jerry got shot, he froze and didn't know what to do.
Cut to Ty and Sullivan at the john's car. The guy is naked in the back seat, handcuffed, and he tells them that some girl he met at a bar was totally into him and she robbed him. Sullivan tells him to go home and stay away from that area and if he sees him again he'll kick his ass, and Ty is all, "We aren't going to arrest him?" Ty is just itching for his first arrest. I guess he really likes writing out paperwork.
Cut to Doc and Carlos at a building where there was an explosion, and someone is dangling out of the window on the fifteenth floor with a hose wrapped around his leg, and Carlos holds the guy's legs and Doc holds Carlos until help comes, and Carlos is totally afraid of heights. Sucks to be Carlos.
Cut to Bosco spraying air freshener in his car, but the smell won't go away. He's complaining that, instead of dropping the drunk off at a church, they should have put a bullet in the back of his skull and weighed him down with rocks and thrown him in the East River. I wonder which class you learn that procedure in at the academy -- remember, Bosco is totally by-the-book, or so he says. So someone comes over to them and tells them that he is supposed to start remodeling an old hotel down the street, but he can't because of the squatters, and Bosco says, "you want to see some 'Compassionate Community' policing?" and they get in the car and hold their noses and follow the guy to the hotel. I've never seen a policeman who enjoys working with the public so much. What a stand-up guy. I hope that if I ever have a problem that someone like Bosco is there to help me. No, not really.
Cut to Carlos and Doc holding onto the out-the-window guy and struggling to keep a grip on him. Ooohhh, will the guy fall? Oh, the suspense! Not. The firemen come and help pull the guy back in. Whatever.
Cut to Ty and Sully at the precinct. Ty is all annoyed that there was an assault on a prostitute who robbed her customer and no one got arrested, and Sullivan asks him what good arresting would do -- problem solved, so move on. Then Sullivan is all, "You don't like it? Quit. Your mother and I would be delighted," and I really hope Ty tries to make his mother happy. So they see that the cheap-watch guy is waiting for them and he tells Sullivan that Michael Daniels is at an old hotel where a bunch of squatters are staying. Could it be the same hotel that Bosco and Yokas just heard about? Oh, the suspense!
Cut to Bosco and Yokas at the old hotel. Bosco has a huge hard-on by now as he gets all ready to make some homeless people miserable, and he strides briskly into the hotel. Ooh -- commercial break used to build up the suspense! I need to poke myself in the eye with a fork to keep from falling asleep.
Cut to Bosco going up to the second floor of the hotel and he looks like he is ready to crack skulls. He finds some squatters, and with a gleam in his eye, he tells them to leave.
Cut to Doc and Carlos outside of the building, and Carlos thanks Doc for not dropping him. Doc confesses that he couldn't help Jerry either, and that he hid under the stairs, and that he felt really bad about it and couldn't bear to see Jerry in the hospital. Then all of the police cars at the scene leave because they all found out where Michael Daniels is.
Cut to Yokas walking the squatters out of the building and a bunch of cop cars arriving on the scene. Sullivan tells her that they think Daniels is in the building, so she tries to radio Bosco. Since his radio didn't work, he had turned it off. Who didn't see that coming? These writers really know how to throw the audience for a loop, huh? So Bosco is walking around looking for squatters and he finds a guy sitting alone with his back to Bosco. Gee, I wonder who that could be? When Bosco approaches him, the guy turns around and shoots Bosco in the chest. Woo hoo! My hero! A bunch of cops rush into the hotel after hearing the shot and Daniels takes Bosco's gun from his hip holster and mumbles, "Why why why," and he starts shooting into the hall where the police are and while Daniels is looking the other way, Bosco sits up -- Dammit! He had on a bulletproof vest! -- and gets his backup gun from his leg holster, and he stands up and tells Daniels to drop the guns. Daniels drops them, but then he reaches for a gun hidden in the front of his pants (I'm not going there), and Bosco lunges at him, and the two of them sail out of a window and fall to the street.
Cut to Daniels in the ambulance babbling like a psycho, and Bosco is in another ambulance with Yokas, and Yokas is all happy that Bosco didn't shoot Daniels even though he had the chance to.
Cut to Carlos and Doc in the hospital, visiting Jerry. Doc goes into Jerry's room and sees Jerry full of tubes and starts crying.
Cut to Ty and Sully at a park. Sully has taken Ty to where Ty's dad got shot, and he explains to Ty that a lot of drug dealers hung out in that park and he and Ty's father went to the park twice a day to discourage the dealers from staying. One minute Ty's dad was laughing about something, and the minute there was a bang and he was shot in the head, and Sullivan didn't know what exactly happened. And in this scene for some reason I can see that they're using Motorola radios, which explains why they have a defective product. So Sullivan is all, "That was the worst day of my life." And Ty is all, "Me too." And I'm all, "Coincidentally, this has been one of the worst hours of my life."
