S24E10

Troy realizes that his alliance is for shit after Jay gets voted out, and he lashes out at Christina in particular and women in general. Remember early in the season when we all thought he was a sexist pig, but then he kind of won us over? Turns out he really is a sexist pig.

Reward Challenge: Survivor Auction. Kim is the big winner, getting a shower and peanut butter and chocolate. Alicia and Tarzan use all their money to get letters from home. Troy saves up his money and wins an advantage in the immunity challenge, despite the women's alliance urging Christina to use all her money to get it first. Kat wins a mystery auction that turns out to be a strawberry cake to be shared by the whole tribe.

After the challenge, Troy looks for an Immunity Idol and fakes finding one to fool the women. Kim says that they should all go look also, even though they're not even sure that there is another idol out there. Everyone agrees, but no one seems to actually look besides Kim.

Immunity Challenge: It's one of those multi-round amalgams of challenges. In the first round, they have to untie knots to uncover a ring. The first three to finish are Kim, Christina and Tarzan, so they join Troy in the round. The second round is bouncing coconuts off a trampoline to take out targets. Tarzan and Troy move on to the finals, where they have to use a slingshot to get three in a row on a wall of targets. Troy wins and rubs it in the women's faces. They just laugh at him.

At Tribal Council, the women call out Troy for being a dick and he doesn't back down. Then Troy lays out his entire plan, which is to convince Tarzan, Leif, Alicia and Christina to join him and get rid of the four-woman alliance of Chelsea, Kim, Kat and Sabrina. In the end, the women split their votes between Leif and Tarzan (why? Not sure) and Tarzan and Leif vote for Kim, so Leif goes home.

It's Night 23 and the tribe just voted out Jay. As they walk back into camp, Sabrina notes that she knew Troy had the Idol. Troy interviews that he knows that he's in line. As they all sit around, Sabrina says, "It is what it is" which means nothing and is obviously intended to break up an awkward silence. Christina tries to convince Troy that it's a compliment (that they're going to vote him out, I guess?) and Troy confronts Christina about lying to him, saying that she never intended to vote for anyone but Jay. Christina avoids answering, but Troy keeps pushing her to admit that she lied. Someone across the fire (Chelsea? Kim?) tells Troy to stop attacking Christina and Troy goes from zero to sixty and starts yelling. Alicia, never one to avoid a chance to wobble her head and wave her finger at someone, jumps into the fray and exchanges a few nonsense words with Troy until they both sort of peter out. Troy says that Christina's non-answer is all the answer he needs. Troy interviews that he's fired up and plans to fight harder now that he knows there is no team left. Yes, because Survivor has always been a game of teams. I think a team of three can win? Something like that.

The morning, Troy goes to Chelsea and complains about how many useless people are left and how he deserves to stay longer than them. Do these people understand juries and how this game is played? Obviously not. Troy's argument should be about how he won't get any jury votes, because that might actually convince them to keep him around. Instead, his argument seems to be, "I have played this game really well and made friends, so take me to the finals, where the jury will vote for me, since I am more deserving."

Troy complains that the women want him to be happy that he's getting voted out now and he won't. Chelsea tells him that he should follows Jonas's example, since Jonas worked his ass off around camp and still got voted out, but "took it like a man." I'm annoyed by Chelsea's insistence that only men can take things well and that people who don't take things well are essentially women. I'm also annoyed by Chelsea's insistence that anyone who's not her or in her alliance needs to roll over and be steamrolled and not complain about it. That said, Troy's method is not the greatest either. Here's Troy's view on the world: he thinks that once women get food and shelter, they realize that they don't need men anymore and kick them out. Troy -- what did your mommy do to you, dude? Or your first wife? Some woman somewhere done him wrong and now he's going to punish all women everywhere for it. Starting tonight.

Welp, that conflict is over now that Troy has expressed his fear of emasculation, so let's go get some Tree Mail! And they discover that the Reward Challenge is actually an auction! They each get $500. Troy interviews that he's not buying any food; he's saving all of his money for a clue or something to help him win immunity.

The tribe members report to the Auction location and take their seats in the bleachers. Probst reminds them that bidding is in increments of $20 (because it's not like Probst can make change) and they cannot pool their money or share items. The first item is three donuts and an iced coffee. Chelsea and Kim volley back and forth and Chelsea takes it for $160. The donuts are gigantic. up is chips, guacamole and a margarita. Alicia, Kat, and Sabrina all bid on it but Sabrina REALLY wants it and ends up paying $400.

Probst says that the item is a protein boost: a protein shake and some bananas. Kat and Leif both bid, but Leif takes it for $100. The item is probably the one that I would bid on forever: a shower with shampoo and a toothbrush and toothpaste. I can't imagine how good that would feel. I feel great just taking a shower in the morning, so what if I couldn't shower for 23 days and then got to take one? I think cartoon birds and butterflies would join me for a lark in the forest. Anyway, Alicia bids $20 and Kat gets confused and tries to bid $20, and then $23 and then before she can figure it out, Kim bids $40 and wins because everyone else wants food. Kat is still sitting there trying to figure out why her strategy didn't work. Kim hops right in and the auction continues without her.

The item is a BLT and an iced tea. Kat has finally figured out how the auction works and wins with $180, then expresses surprise that there's bacon on a BLT. Oh Kat. So, so dumb. up: a giant bowl of peanut butter with chocolate pieces. Alicia bids $20 and then Kim bids $200 from the shower. Alicia almost lets it go, but then bids $220 and Kim bids $240 and wins. Alicia still has $500 left. What is she waiting for? She's complaining that she really wanted that, but letting it go? I don't get her strategy. She tells Probst that she didn't want to spend that much on peanut butter and Probst reminds her that it's not her money to start out with. Alicia still isn't bidding.

Probst wonders why Tarzan hasn't even thought about bidding and Tarzan says that he has to fix the shocks on his Jeep. Do they really get to take the leftover money home? That's dumb. Also, Tarzan is a plastic surgeon. I'm sure he can afford the $500 to get his stupid car fixed. I don't understand these people at all. The item is a letter from home for each of the contestants. Alicia immediately bids $500 and wins and then bursts out crying. She reads the letter from her dad out loud through her tears. Just about everyone else starts crying too and Tarzan is particularly bummed out. Probst tells them that the price of a letter is $500 if anyone else wants in and Tarzan immediately gives up his car money. He refuses to share his letter, though. Troy is trying to hold back tears and he says that he feels completely alone and he knows he has to play this game on his own.

The item is an advantage in the Immunity Challenge. Troy immediately bids $300. The women look around and Sabrina mentions that Christina hasn't spent any money yet. Christina bids $360. She and Troy go back and forth until Troy bids $420 and despite Kat's urgings and the stares of the other women, Christina doesn't outbid him. What? Why? I'm so confused. Why bid at all if she wasn't prepared to go to $500? And what is she saving her money for? I guess maybe she feels guilty about lying to Troy? He collects his advantage and slams his fist on the table and then explains to Probst that he's annoyed that everyone is colluding against him and using Christina as their "guinea pig." And also Troy is mad that no one cheered for him for winning. Wow, did his parents do a number on him or what? It's like, one second I'm on his side because it is annoying that the women are openly working against him and then the second he's being a petulant child and I can't stand him.

Kat wants to keep bidding because she has money left. The item is a covered dish with a note. Kat and Christina bid until Kat wins with $160. Seriously, what is Christina saving her money for? What better items does she think will come up? Anyway, Kat finds out that she won a strawberry cake and she gets to share it with the whole tribe. They only have sixty seconds to eat it. And they dig in. I notice that Troy wasn't so annoyed that he couldn't partake. And that ends the auction. Christina is a weirdo who is $500 richer, I guess.

Back at camp, everyone who won food is obviously busy either feeling sick or pooping because all that rich food after weeks of starvation is a mistake. Troy takes his clue outside of camp and reads it to the camera; it says that he will automatically advance to the second stage of the challenge so that instead of 1 in 9, his odds will be 1 in 4. He tells the camera that he's going to win the challenge and he has to, but he says "baby" a lot. What is happening to Troy? It's like he's having a personality transplant right in front of us. He seemed okay when he was in an alliance; now that he's on his own, he's becoming paranoid and angry. He thinks that the women are scared of his power now, but meanwhile they are back at camp doing laundry and not looking scared at all. I have to believe that if they were actually scared, the editors would have put in an interview of one of them stating that right here.

As part of his Fear 2012 Campaign, Troy has decided to openly look for an Immunity Idol as well. So he climbs trees and looks in holes and whatnot. Kim comes back to camp and reports what's happening and Chelsea points out that they don't even know if there is an idol left. Kim thinks they should all look, since their odds of finding it are greater with more people looking. Well, they would be except for Kat. And Alicia. And Leif. Can you see any of them finding an idol?

Chelsea interviews that they were all disappointed when Christina let Troy win the note at auction and I get what she's saying, since none of them had enough money left to win it. But perhaps they should have anticipated that happening and come up with a strategy. I'm not sure why Christina had to sacrifice. Then again, Christina didn't spend ANY money at the auction, which still puzzles me. Chelsea also thinks that Troy has put a target on his back. I don't know that Troy had much choice, although he didn't have to be such a dick about it. Troy pretends to find an Idol as Kim watches. I don't know if she bought it or not. Also, Kim is the only one out there pretending to look for an Idol so I guess no one agreed with her strategy of everyone looking. Kat doesn't think that it's a big deal, since they have the numbers to just flush out an Idol again, although she notes that if he also wins the Challenge, it will be "a two-bummer." I love that phrase. Kim interviews that Troy is really dangerous right now because he's smart and he feels cornered, a deadly combination. I still don't think the women are as scared as Troy thinks they are, though.

Day 27. Immunity Challenge! It consists of three rounds, all taken from challenges. In the first, all nine Survivors race to untangle their own knotted ropes, similar to the first DIY challenge. The first four to finish move on to the second round, where they will climb crates and bounce a coconut off a trampoline to break targets. That's from the challenge where Probst bullied Alicia for being terrible. The first two to knock out all their targets will use a slingshots at a wall of targets and try to get three in a row. That's from the first challenge that the women's tribe won. Troy's advantage is that he gets to skip the first round and move right on to the second round. So only three others will move on with him.

I love that Leif painted his face to look like a skull and Probst didn't even comment on it because it's so dumb and no one cares about Leif. The first round starts with some frantic de-knotting. Nearly everyone is close (except for Alicia and Leif, who suck), but Tarzan, Kim and Christina are the ones to move onto the second round with Troy. The onlookers basically cheer on anyone but Troy, but he is the first to finish and then he screams and yells and slaps the ground and his chest and says that it's his island. The onlookers are like, "Whatevs, dude. You are lame." Kim is close to becoming the second person to move on, but she misses and Tarzan makes it, so Tarzan moves on instead. The women all cheer so I guess Tarzan is in their alliance now? We don't really know where Leif and Tarzan stand in terms of alliance versus non-alliance, do we? I watched the weeks I didn't recap, but not that closely, so I'm not sure.

Tarzan and Troy are the final round. I guess the women just don't want Troy to win Immunity since they think he may also have an Idol. The final round is the coconut slingshot thing. Both men get to a point where they only need one more target out to win and then Troy wins. He beats his chest and taunts the onlookers, telling them not to fuck with him. Kat (I think?) points out that all he's doing is losing potential jury votes if he does make it to the finals. Who knew Kat understood this game? Troy tells them that they're all scared of him. He can keep saying that, but it doesn't make it true. Then Troy gives a speech about how he's only been going at fifty percent and now he's turning it on. They all ignore him. Look, I get why he's upset and I understand being competitive, but he needs to take it down about ten notches because Kat's right. People won't forget this if he does make it to the finals. They might want to reward someone who fought and won, but not if that person was an ungracious winner.

Wait a minute. Before the challenge, they told me it was Day 27, but now they're saying its Day 26. Why are we going backwards? When they return to camp, Tarzan tells Troy that he likes him, but he needs to be a noble winner. Troy says he's competitive and that's his personality. Tarzan says they're friends and they can shake hands and still compete. The women don't comment. Troy interviews that his win has made the women paranoid because it's their worst-case scenario.

Kim and Chelsea have a talk about strategy. Chelsea says that they need to keep their strongest women so they have a chance of beating Troy in challenges. Chelsea also believes that Troy has an Idol, so she thinks their best bet is to vote out Leif. But then again, Leif is easy for them to beat in challenges, so maybe they should "make a move." She doesn't get specific about what that move would be, but it seems she's talking about potentially voting out a woman. Then Kim and Chelsea both agree that Troy will exploit any weakness in their alliance. If they voted out, say, Christina, Troy might be able to swing Alicia, Tarzan and Leif to his side by pointing out that they're and then Chelsea, Kim, Kat and Sabrina are in trouble. They want to make it out like the women are still a united front.

Tarzan helps Leif wash his face paint off and they discuss how it's probably one of them going home tonight. Tarzan says the women might take out one of their own, but they aren't talking to him about their plans and he should have won Immunity so he didn't have to worry. Thanks, Captain Obvious. Troy says he's going to talk to Leif, Tarzan, Christina and Alicia and point out that this is their last chance to dethrone the women's alliance in general and Kim in particular while they have the numbers. Plus, they have to know they are on the bottom of the alliance, so this may be their last chance to make a move. It's a great strategy, but this show has proven time and time again that most people are unwilling to rock the boat, even when it's in their own self-interest.

Troy lays out his strategy to Leif, who doesn't have much to say. Troy then discusses it with Tarzan, but we don't see his response either. He moves on to Christina and asks why she would settle for being voted out sixth or seventh when she could move up to fifth or fourth or higher. And finally, he goes to Alicia, who says that she hears what he's saying and she'll think about it. She interviews that Troy could make a run of Immunity Challenges and she wants to be on his team if that happens. It's probably notable that they only showed Alicia's response, which wasn't exactly a firm agreement. It was more like, "Well, he does have a point, but I'm not quite on board yet."

They head to Tribal Council. Probst starts out by bringing up Troy's behavior post-win and Troy falls back on his "I'm really competitive and that's just how I roll" excuse. Chelsea wonders how he expects them to respond when he yelling that this is his fucking island and Sabrina adds that he said, "Fuck you!" Troy counters that he actually said, "Don't fuck with me." Jay, Jonas and Mike on the jury are delighted with this conversation. They're practically popping popcorn over there. Sabrina adds that Troy has turned into someone she doesn't recognize, and he has to be more likable. I think she means that he has to be more likable if he wants to get votes, but Troy interprets it as Sabrina telling him how to act and his response is a mature, "You're not my mother." He's like Dwight on The Office: "You can't fire me! I don't work in this VAN!" (One of my all-time favorite moments from that show, second only to (from the same episode), "Mailboxes Etc.") Sabrina continues to engage Troy, who accuses her of deceiving him and lying to Jay and then she falls back on the "Why are you yelling at me when I'm right here?" Their argument finally dies out and Probst lets it go without comment for once. I don't think either of them came off well in that exchange.

Probst asks Chelsea if she respects Troy for fighting to stay in the game. Chelsea admits that she's paranoid about "the old Manono" (Tarzan, Leif, Christina, Alicia) joining with Troy. Troy says that those four are definitely going and he doesn't understand why they don't make a move so that they don't get voted out . Chelsea tries to argue that Troy's plan only works if Troy wins every immunity challenge and he is beatable. I don't know if Chelsea doesn't understand his plan or if she's just being purposely obtuse to confuse potential voters. Because if that group votes out Kim tonight, they will have a five to three advantage week. Even if one of that minority wins immunity, they could still pick them off one-by-one for a few weeks. I don't know what Chelsea is going on about, honestly. Troy points that out.

Kim says that the problem with this argument is that everyone is making a lot of assumptions about position in alliances and she denies that Christina and Alicia are on the bottom of their alliance. Come on. They obviously are. Really, you're going to vote out Kat before Christina? Girl, please. Probst wants Christina to lay out her thought process, but Christina's answer doesn't reveal much and Probst doesn't follow up. Probst asks Alicia what happens if someone flips and Alicia says that the girls would be screwed and she doesn't know who to trust or when is the best time to make a move. I would say now. Now is the best time to make a move. Aaaand it's time to vote.

As Probst reads the votes, it shakes out to three votes for Tarzan, three votes for Leif and two votes for Kim with one vote left. The final vote goes to Leif, so he is sent packing. I am so confused by this vote. I understand that the editors don't want to telegraph the result, but I have no idea why the women voted they way they did. Watching the voting, it turns out that Christina, Alicia and Kim voted for Tarzan while Troy and Leif voted for Kim and Sabrina, Kat, Chelsea and Tarzan voted for Leif. So did the women decide to split their votes between Tarzan and Leif in case Troy gave one of them the Idol? That's the only thing I can come up with. Also, Tarzan considers himself part of the women's alliance, at least for voting purposes.
