Rocking A Hard Place

Tuesday

Ryan is the one chosen to return for an encore, and I'm pretty sure that's him behind all that eyeliner singing "Back Of Your Car." He also wins a product-placed car and cell phone, as well as a chance to plug his new album on national TV. After a quick recap of each final four member's arc over the season, Toby takes the stage for Radiohead's "Karma Police" and a repeat of his original, "Throwing It Away." Magni joins him for some wacky onstage hijinx, but even more surprising is the fact that Toby remains onstage throughout both songs. Lukas sings "Fix You" by Coldplay and a solo acoustic reprise of "Head Spin." Dilana does "Roxanne" better than Chris ever will in his entire life, even if he has the other three Supernovices singing backup like she does. Then she shows that she's pretty much recovered from her injury by singing "Super Soul" from all over the place. Magni's third trip to the stage tonight finds him singing Deep Purple's "Hush" and his own "When The Time Comes," the latter of which leaves Tommy cold. A few minutes into the last voting window, the Supernovices are ranked thusly: Dilana, Toby, Lukas and Magni. Looks like she's back, and not a moment too soon.

Wednesday

We don't waste much time finding out who was in the bottom two during last night's voting. Magni, Toby and Lukas have to stand, but the first to sing for survival is Magni, who rekindles his "Fire" and gets to try out the fancy set background they have for the finale. Then Lukas gets to sit down, and Toby phones in "White Wedding." Yet it's Magni who's eliminated , to nobody's surprise. The final three try to sell themselves to the judges: Lukas ("I'm ready to lead you"), Dilana ("I'm the one") and Toby ("I'm the tallest") all make convincing arguments, but you know we're going to hear them sing one more time (but not before Lukas's "Head Spin" gets edited into a Survivor promo, hmmmm). Lukas sings "Bittersweet Symphony" again, Dilana repeats "Zombie," and Toby brings back "Somebody Told Me." And then the Rand Wagon grinds to a halt, leaving Dilana and Lukas to wait through one last commercial break before the guys announce their winner: Lukas. Dave and Gilby promise to help Dilana put out her own record, and the poor girl seems to believe them. Then it's time for Lukas to sing a couple of celebratory songs with the band: "Be Yourself (and Five Other Clichés)," which Toby sang before, and "It's All Love," the one Magni sang last week. Magni even returns to play rhythm guitar on the last song. Can't get rid of that guy. And the best news of all doesn't even get mentioned on the show: our guys lost their lawsuit, and thus the right to call themselves Supernova. Congratulations on your new lead singer, "band." Want more? The full recap starts right below!

Tuesday

Brooke welcomes us to the first night of the two-night finale, giving a shout-out to the final four: Magni, Toby, Dilana, and Lukas. By this time tomorrow, one of them will be the frontman ("or woman," Brooke condescends) of Supernova. Brooke introduces those guys, too, as well as Dave Navarro. And the thing to do is to get the season's big consolation prize out of the way. As you recall, we've been asked to vote for one of the eliminated Supernovices to return for an encore tonight. I haven't voted, and you probably haven't voted, but apparently someone did. And so, from the Nut Gallery, Dilana gets to introduce the return of Ryan Star. The paramedics backstage prepare for the worst.

Ryan takes the stage with a black Les Paul over his shoulder. Perhaps in the past couple of weeks he's had time to consider how churlish his farewell sounded, so he seems eager to mend some fences now. He immediately thanks Supernova for the "opportunity of a lifetime," saying he can't wait for their record. He also thanks the remaining Supernovices, saying, "May the best man -- or woman -- win." Condescending ass. He also thanks the fans for getting him there tonight, and leads the House Band into his original song, "The Back Of Your Car." It sounds as good as last time, and I find the performance a lot more enjoyable now that he's not desperately trying to stay in the competition. He can just relax and be himself. He keeps his guitar on the whole time, as opposed to flinging it across the stage. He doesn't climb or jump off of anything, or even start the song on the chorus for no reason. It makes him a lot less exhausting to watch. I could do without all the eyeliner he's rocking, though.

Once Ryan's done, Brooke comes out and asks him about his new album, which of course is called Dark Horse. He thanks Dave for that, and claims it's already available on the Rock Star website. I'll take his word for it. Brooke announces that in addition to winning the encore, Ryan's also getting a couple of other prizes. One of them is the product-placed car practically parked in the middle of the audience, and the other is a product-placed cell phone. Because I haven't sat through enough commercials for both of those goddamn things already this summer. Brooke cuts Ryan loose to go check out his new car. I hope they don't give him the keys until the people clear out of there, though. I can just see him in the driver's seat, looking at all the Supernova/Dilana/Lukas/Magni/Toby fans pressed against his windshield, and deciding to go "Dark Horse" in a totally new and tragic way.

And now it's time for a recap montage of the whole season. Forgive me if I don't go into too much detail here, because I've already told you this stuff once, after all. Here we go....

Fifteen Supernovices crammed into the Nut Gallery. Matt. Chris. Jenny. Phil. Dana. Jill. Josh. Zayra. Patrice. Ryan. Storm. The final four. Lukas had a strong start, as did Dilana and Toby, but Magni had a rough beginning. He wasn't helped by the fact that he missed his family, and he hit the bottom three. Meanwhile, Toby put us to sleep with "Runaway Train," and Lukas's voice started to annoy Jason. Dilana was the frontrunner. Magni rescued himself with Hendrix's "Fire" and didn't look back, Lukas found a voice Jason could appreciate, and Toby discovered the catchphrase, the philosophy, the way of life that is "Evs." Meanwhile, Dilana wiped out at the press clinic, but managed to remain the "last woman standing" (or rather, last woman leaning on crutches). We then get clips of each of the final four fronting Supernova the past several weeks. Wow, isn't that a coincidence, that the four left are also the four who got a chance to sing with the band? It's almost as if the guys knew all along who was going to be left this week.

So tonight's going to work pretty much the same way last Tuesday did, right down to the fact that they'll be singing the same original songs instead of new ones. Which I find disappointing. Not only would I like to know whether they are able to write more than one decent song (or, in Dilana's case, write one decent song), I really don't need to hear "Head Spin" or "Throwing It Away" for the third time in a week. Oh well, nothing for it. After they sing, we vote (or someone does, and more power to them), Supernova makes an elimination early tomorrow, and then the final three take each other on to determine who wins it all. Brooke doesn't specify whether they'll be battling with daggers, nunchuks, or magic spells. I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Toby's starting things out with "Karma Police" by Radiohead. He sings the first verse wearing aviator shades from behind the microphone stand, and then eventually steps out. His accent is kind of jarring on this one, which doesn't normally happen. Maybe it's because this is the first time I've heard him singing this slowly. The audience is a sea of waving, "Evs"-emblazoned hands. He takes off the sunglasses going into the bridge, and makes the House Band drop out on one of his big high notes. As he does. And then the song just kind of ends. I found that kind of whatever. Not to be confused with "Evs," mind you.

In the Nut Gallery, Magni waves Toby's Australian flag, which apparently is some kind of signal for Toby to invite him up to play guitar on "Throwing It Away." Toby does the song without ever leaving the stage once, if you can believe it. It sounds much the same as last week, even with Magni on third guitar. During Rafael's guitar solo, Toby goes around behind Magni and writes "EVS" on the back of the Iceman's skull. Magni's a good enough sport that he stands still for it. Or he's had enough experience with people writing on his head that he'd rather let Toby finish than wind up a human billboard for "E~~~" all night. Magni unstraps his guitar during the last verse. He makes like he's going to smash it, but instead he crouches down in front of Toby, holding the guitar by its bottom edge in position for Toby to play. So you know that an Icelandic hand is quite close to a set of Aussie goolies right now. Magni takes the guitar back upstage, and Toby leaps and hollers through the end of the song.

Dave tells Toby that "Karma Police" is his favorite Radiohead song, and that Toby did a great job on both that and his original. "At this point," Dave says, "I just feel like I'm kicking back and watching a great rock show. Not a whole lot I can say." That never seems to stop him, though, does it? Tommy just tells Toby, "Nice job." Gilby thinks Toby got a little lost on the Radiohead song early on (although sounded fine to me), and over the disapproval of the audience, he says that Toby pulled it out and does great in a higher range. And in other recently-breaking news, Matt went home. Jason touchy-feelys about Toby's energy, so you know he dug it, too. Brooke give the voting spiel for Toby, and promises a little Lukas for us when we come back. As if there's any other size.

Hey, is that Paula Abdul in the audience? I'm pretty sure it is. Nobody let her near a microphone, okay? From the couch to Tommy, Brooke welcomes us back and asks Jason how the tour's going. He says that they've already sold out a few dates and even added a show in Albany. Sounds like Albany's ready to rock, as long as they're not too picky. Back to the competition. Brooke introduces Lukas, who's singing "Fix You" by Coldplay.

Lukas starts it out like a hymn, going quite high on the opening verse and thus demonstrating a considerable level of security considering the glittery eyeliner he's sporting tonight. Then he cinches up his throat and does his Lukas thing through the middle. When it gets quiet again at the end, Dave holds up his cell phone, which doesn't really have the same effect considering there are more lights on him than I have on me all day. All the "Rossi Posse" and "Rossi Possi" signs in the audience waggle happily at the end as Paula Abdul does a big overhead seal-clap. Her manicures must cost more than my house payment.

For his second song, Lukas does "Head Spin" sans House Band, simply accompanying himself on his left-handed acoustic guitar. There are some songs where you can strip it down, and it's still exciting and vital. I don't think this is particularly one of them. If I didn't already know the song from hearing it twice last week, I don't think I'd care for it much here. I miss the appropriately dizzy guitar arpeggios. Lukas's voice sounds good, though.

Before giving Lukas his props, Dave calls out Paula Abdul: "When she wants to hear great singing, she comes to Rock Star: Supernova!" She stands and takes a bow, and somehow Tommy manages to not hit on her very much when the spotlight finds her in the audience. The weirdest thing, though, is the spectacle of Lukas Rossi waving at Paula Abdul from the stage. Things you never thought you'd see. Dave tells Lukas what a great show this is, and tells him he did a great job. He adds that all season, he's wondered whether he could listen to Lukas perform for two hours. But now he says Lukas has shown so much variety that he'd not only listen, he'd buy a ticket. Everybody cheers instead of pointing out that Dave is rich. Tommy calls Lukas's performances "cool as hell," and Gilby appreciates Lukas's willingness to take a chance: "That's what rock & roll is all about." Dave tells Lukas for some reason, "Grab your torch, head back to camp." Maybe Dave's not as rich as I thought, if he'll take a check from Mark Burnett for saying that.

Brooke says Dilana is doing a song that's already been sung this season, "but she thinks she can do it better." And about what song is she daring to make such a bold claim? It's "Roxanne." Oh, way to set the bar high for yourself, Dilana. I could do that song better. I have done that song better. Dilana starts out behind the microphone stand, crutchless and leaning on a jaunty cane instead. She sings the first line beautifully and a capella, with a few bluesy flourishes that the crowd loves. Jim the Rhythm Guitarist strums along as she heads into the first chorus. During the end of the second verse, the camera circles in close around her, and before the second chorus, she says, "Sing it, boys." And out of nowhere, the three guys are behind her singing "Roxaaaane" during the chorus. Well, Magni and Toby are, but Lukas is going, "yeah, yeah, yeah." I'm not surprised that harmony isn't his thing. They sound great, though. I would have to agree with Dilana that she did it better than Chris did. Some might even make a case that she did it better than The Police did. All three of the guys hug Dilana before returning to the Nut Gallery, as she tells the audience, "Let's hear it for my boyfriends!" Just try to triangulate Dilana's taste in men from that comment.

Before going into "Super Soul," Dilana wants to make sure that we know the song is about freedom and not anger. Now that she's not angry any more, of course. So much for letting the music speak for itself, which, we've already heard Gilby on that subject. The song starts, and it's quickly clear that the cane's just a prop, because she's quickly ditched it as she dances around at the end of the runway. Then she hops off the stage into the audience, cuts through, and climbs the judges' dais to sing right into their faces. From there, Dilana goes all the way to the back tier, where she demonstrates that no matter how rock & roll you are, high kicks, short black skirts, and white underwear don't mix. She works the rest of the room before returning to the judges' dais and finishing there before getting a roadie-back ride back to the stage.

Dave says to Dilana, "You know how much I love you, right? Multiply that by a thousand." Which is good, considering he can probably still taste her spit. He thinks that she's awesome and is glad to see her back. "Really smart to get your competitors to sing 'backup' for you," he adds. Tommy is almost at a loss for words, saying that she's beautiful to watch. Jason has one big suggestion: "Matching outfits for the boys. And Lukas, if you could work on the choreography." Heh. Gilby just says that he can't wait until tomorrow night. Whatever that means. We get Dilana's voting spiel, and Brooke reveals the startling news that Magni is the final remaining Supernovice, and he's singing . Are you as amazed as I am?

Magni's singing "Hush" by Deep Purple, which I love, although I'm not going to love seeing it truncated to two minutes. Magni's all guitared up again, and he makes the smart move of being the first onstage to play his instrument; he slashes out that opening chord all by himself for a couple of bars before the House Band launches in full strength. He sounds great on the "Na na na nas" in the opening, especially with the House Band doing harmonies, but even better on the opening verse. Alas, he blows the words on the chorus, although he plays it off well enough that you wouldn't know. He has a great time jamming with the band. Paul the Keyboard Player even gets a hot organ solo (dirty!), which you don't hear so often any more. After the chorus, Magni does the dueling solos with Rafael the Lead Guitarist again, and they face off and share a microphone for the final "Na na nas." And then it's over. Damn, that was short.

Magni introduces his original song by pretending to forget the title, but then "remembers" that it's "When The Time Comes." "It's the last song of the evening, so go nuts," he advises the audience. The House Band heads into it, and Magni sings this one without the guitar. It's much like last week, except there's a lot more low roaring in the second verse and more screaming at the end. And a lot of grabbing the front of his own t-shirt, for some reason. But unlike Ryan, he can get away with it. I'm also glad to report that Toby didn't use a Sharpie on his head, because there's no sign of "EVS" left back there. I think Magni's scalp is the source of his power. flying glass, marker-wielding Aussies -- he shakes it all off.

Dave points out to Magni that one of the young women in the audience is "literally fanning herself." Magni modestly says that it's warm in there, but Dave says, "It ain't that, bro." Shot of the poor woman in question, whose cheeks are now burning for an entirely different reason. Dave says that the Deep Purple song was really exciting (too short, I thought, in case I haven't made that clear), and now it's a question of how the cards fall. He tells the Supernovices that they're "all awesome." Tommy's not so kind; he tells Magni that although he remembered everyone else's original tracks, he doesn't remember Magni's at all. Boos from the audience, none of whom can remember a single Supernova song. Jason says that he enjoyed the original, even if it's not as memorable as the others, but it's cool that Magni gets to play his song for the world. Yes, Jason, we get it, you're doing them all a favor. Magni points out that he loves his song, and not everyone is necessarily supposed to. Jason agrees that the most important thing is to enjoy your own music. "That's the only way you can bring it with confidence," he says. As for Gilby, he's brief: "Great job. You sang great, you performed well." Brooke gives Magni's voting number and opens the voting. Last chance!

From a taping that occurred two days in the past, Brooke claims that "Already the numbers are crazy." We get to see the early returns: Dilana's making quite a comeback, in first place ahead of Toby, Lukas, and Magni, in that order. She says Canada, Australia, Iceland, the U.S., and the rest of the world are voting right now. Brooke also calls for some love for the House Band. I think I'll miss them most of all.

Oh, and then during the closing credits, the Supernovices get to tour the Supernova tour bus. Which is going to have to be repainted, but more on that in the recap of Wednesday's show.

Wednesday

You guys, between the taping of Tuesday's show and tonight's? Something wonderful happened. Remember the other band called Supernova who sued to keep our guys from using the name? They won! Now, in addition to watching Tommy, Gilby and Jason finally pick a winner, we get to enjoy the spectacle of everybody not calling them Supernova all night. I can't wait.

So let's get started. Brooke, in a leather supervillainess outfit, welcomes us to the show, saying that later on, "Gilby, Tommy, and Jason" will take the stage with their new lead singer. As we already know, it's down to Magni, Toby, Dilana, and Lukas, who are all lined up to her onstage. Brooke calls for a "hell yeah" for the individual members of Not Supernova Any More, and introduces Dave before recapping last night's show. Oh, and we see that Ryan actually did climb on something last night: his new car. Can't keep that boy down, can we?

Back in tonight's show, Dave declares it "a hell of a summer," and now we're down to the final four. Dave's subtitle still reads, "Dave Navarro: The Panic Channel - Guitar." He tells SuperNo that they're in good shape singer-wise no matter what, and is looking forward to finding out who he's going to be touring with in January. Except I thought they were all coming along, Idol tour-style?

Brooke explains the finale rules. Tonight, her envelope contains the names of the bottom two, as opposed to the usual bottom three. Which tonight would leave out only one Supernovice, so that wouldn't work, I guess. Each of the bottom two will sing a song for "the band," who will then eliminate one of them. Then the final three will each sing again, and "the guys" will then choose a winner.

Brooke again tells us the voting was both record-breaking and close, as always. So now it's time to find out who all was in the bottom two at some point during the voting. The first to stand is Magni, who tells everyone not to "oooh" at him. Then Toby's up, to general shock and consternation. Because we all know that Lukas was in third place early on last night, we're not surprised when he stands up as well. And by "we," I mean "people not in the live audience." They're plenty surprised. So Dilana's safe for now. First in the bottom two? Magni.

Magni says goodbye to the other three ex-Supernovices like he's never going to see them again (not bloody likely) and joins Brooke onstage. "I'm gonna do 'Fire' again. Is that okay with everyone?" he asks. Everyone seems okay with it. There are lots of Icelandic flags and ICE MAN signs waving in the audience right now. Magni doffs his white suit jacket and straps on his sunburst Les Paul, and he and the House Band are off. And I do mean off. It's noticeably slower this time than when he did this a couple of weeks ago, which makes it hard to keep the energy up. There's a fancy new backdrop behind the stage, about a dozen or so light columns that alternately depict flames and sound levels. Magni and Rafael the Lead Guitarist co-solo a couple of times, so we can see how much better Magni's hair looks than Rafael's. I think they almost make out at one point.

After Magni's done, Toby and Lukas are still standing, and it's the former who's called over to give a bottom-two performance. Toby heads over in this complicated, high-collared black shirt that makes him look like some kind of spaghetti Western/James Bond villain, and says he's going to do some Billy Idol. More specific, please? Oh, apparently the House Band knows, because they launch right into "White Wedding." Which is still too low for Toby, and I can't imagine that stiff collar helps him any. The light columns go crazy. And believe it or not, Toby actually confines himself to the stage. I was thinking that if Dilana really wanted to sabotage him this week, she should have them set up a jungle gym onstage and leash Toby to it. That wouldn't have made much difference this week. Oh, except then he jumps off the end of the runway on the last "Start agaaaain." It's like the stage is too hot for him to stay on it very long or something. After he's done, Brooke claims that "Tommy, Jason, and Gilby" are "deciding" who's going home . As if the order hasn't been determined since the elimination of Zayra.

When we come back from commercial, Toby and Magni stand at the end of the runway awaiting Magni's ouster. Gilby says that this was a hard one. "You guys have contributed so much to this show," he says, and turns his attention to Magni. He calls it a "great ride," but says that they've always questioned whether Magni can "front the band," as opposed to being "part of the band." Which, I don't seem to recall that being mentioned before, but whatever. Apparently they've decided they have to say something, and Magni's the to go. The audience gives him a sympathetic "aww," then a sincere round of applause as Magni hugs Toby. Dave calls Magni the "most consistent singer," saying there have never been any complaints about his vocal ability. He says Magni will do great and wishes him luck before turning the floor over to the Iceman. Magni claims to "have no idea what to say," but he quickly starts thanking people: his voters, "all you guys" (meaning the audience), his family (pointing to a particularly thick cluster of Icelandic flags in the back), the House Band (which he says he wants to be in), the members of SuperNotSoMuch for the best summer of his life, and most of all the ex-Supernovices. "Heading off to become the King of Iceland, Dave," Jason cracks as Magni departs. I don't think Magni's going to get that far. You'll see what I mean at the end.

Brooke calls Dilana and Lukas over to stand onstage with her and Toby. And that's the final three, y'all. Brooke tells Lukas to take a step forward, and he hesitates before obeying with a smile. Brooke says this is his "last chance to make [his] case to 'the band,'" but first we get a little Lukas montage.

In between clips of Great Moments in Lukas, he interviews that "second place is not an option" and "I'm absolutely ready to win this. The best is yet to come." When we come back from that all-too-brief bit of recapper-friendly montage goodness, Dave asks Lukas if he has anything to add. Lukas makes a little speech, saying that the members of SuperNotAnyMore that given the level of success they've had, they could really be assholes, but they're not. Which is quite a compliment, coming from someone who was kind of an asshole even when he had limited success. "It would be my honor to lead them on a world tour," he concludes. The audience cheers, Dave gives a "right on," and Tommy and Gilby clap. Jason, not so much.

Dilana's turn. Great Moments in Dilana is punctuated by her saying that anyone could win. "We're all pretty damn good," she says. Of SuperNowThey'reScrewed, she says, "I need them. And they need me." And what's more rock & roll than neediness? Afterward, Dave calls her a fighter, and an "incredible performer and singer." For her final argument, she goes with her usual subtlety: "Lukas is amazing. Toby is incredible. But I'm the one." The crowd goes nuts, and the judges, Brooke, Toby and even Lukas all laugh hysterically. "There's that fighter I was talking about," Dave euphemizes.

During Great Moments in Toby, he interviews that this has been the best time of his life, and that he thinks he has a "fantastic" chance of winning. Dave tells Toby that he has really grown over the course of the season. Toby credits SuperKnowNotWhatThey'llBeCalled with giving him great advice and teaching him a lot. That segues into his argument: "I'm ready." He also adds that the energy he has on this show is nothing compared to what he'd be able to achieve with a few beers in him. But here's the kicker: "And also, I'm tallest." Dilana dashes into the wings, comes back onstage with a stepladder, climbs up, and punches Toby playfully on the shoulder.

So because we're barely twenty minutes in, Tommy says that they're going to need to hear each of the top three song once more before deciding. Brooke promises just that after the commercials.

During which, a promo of the Survivor premiere is "sweetened" with footage of Lukas singing "Head Spin" last week. Giveaway? As for this season of Survivor itself, I said it to Miss Alli and I'll say it to you: better her than me.

Back from break, Lukas takes the stage in his black suit with knee-length jacket and big silver rosary to sing "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve. Seen it. Not much new to say this time around. Even the light columns stay dark. Sounds good, though. Again.

And then it's Dilana's turn. She sings "Zombie" by the Cranberries in her gunmetal-gray prom dress. She seems to be drawing more energy from the occasion that she performed with last time she did this song. There's also a lot more ululating this time around. I'm trying not to seem like I'm coasting to the end here, but we're not hearing any new songs so clearly I'm not the only one.

Then Toby gets to give his second performance of the night. He clears his throat with a couple of loud "OHHHH"s, and then the House Band rips into "Somebody Told Me." This makes Toby the only member of the final three who reprises a song that won him an encore, for what it's worth. Which isn't much. This isn't really as good as either of those performances. He's just as energetic, but kind of flat on the high notes. Ah, well. He got to stay in the competition almost twenty minutes longer than Magni did.

The three of them head out to the end of the runway, as Jason alone among the judges gives Toby a standing ovation. Brooke calls for some love for the final three, and for the House Band as well. "You guys rocked it all summer long," Brooke tells them. Which, yes, they did. I just now realized this is the last time we're going to hear the House Band this season, and I'm kind of sad. Brooke says that we're going to hear from "Tommy, Jason and Gilby" after the break. And we go to commercial as SuperNaughtyLittlePlagiarists pretends to confer.

I can't decide who in this Panasonic commercial I'd less like to be: the guy so hypnotized by the screen that his house falls apart around him, or Christian Slater after being reduced to commercial voice-over work.

When we come back, the judges' attention is focused on something on the coffee table in front of them. Might that be the injunction? Brooke remarks that Tommy's drum set is on the stage, which she interprets as an exciting sign. She asks Jason what's up, and he's so reluctant to speak that for one thrilling moment, I wonder if he's actually going to announce a name change for the band. But no, he simply yammers about it being a "heavy day" mixed with "positive vibes," and says that all of the top three are heroes in their respective countries. Jason addresses "Tob," saying he's got unquestionable vocal ability, and has the voice most able to cut through the loud guitars. Each performance has been a little better. And, best of all? "You're going to be the one to go home from this competition."

Whoa, that took a turn, didn't it? Lukas's eyebrows leap up from behind his white-framed sunglasses in shock, and Dilana mouths, "Oh, my God." "We love you," Jason assures Toby, over the crowd getting quite loudly pissed off. And it's not like he can say, "But you're just too fratty for us." Wait, actually he could say that. I don't know why anyone would have a problem with that. Toby gently shushes the booing crowd, and after they quiet down, Dave says that he's enjoyed watching Toby grow and wishes him the best, pointing out that he's already got a hit. He lets Toby give his goodbye speech.

Toby thanks the guys for the "best time ever," and says that he's proud to have come in third to Lukas and Dilana. He tells them they made a safe choice (ooh, Gilby won't like that), saying that "It took me a while to get great, but these guys always have been." He says that whoever wins, "Look out, everyone. It's gonna be awesome." Again, Toby says that he's learned a lot from the guys, and then he is out of there. Evs.

"So it's down to the 'edgy' ones," Dave says. Brooke's standing to the final two as Dave tries to pad the show and ramp up the suspense. "It kind of looks like you're about to perform a Goth wedding," Dave cracks. Thanks for holding back the funniest line of the season until now, dude. Dilana and Lukas crack up. Brooke says. "Last night, both of you had the highest number of votes." Whatever that means. So is it time for the final decision? At the forty-one minute mark? Not hardly. Gilby asks for a few more minutes, which means one more commercial break. Dave groans like he cares, but it's out of his hands; we're going to see some more ads anyway. Which is good, because I've been wondering what kind of cell phone I should buy.

Dilana and Lukas are still standing to Brooke at the end of the runway when we come back, and she asks Tommy to end the suspense. He tells Lukas, "Your look, your energy, your vocals, the way you move...everything has been really, really amazing for us." He turns his attention to Dilana, and has to wait through a loud cheer before continuing, "You are enchanting. Your voice is unbelievable...who doesn't love you? Who doesn't love both of you guys?" The crowd starts screaming again, and Tommy acts like they have a part in the decision at this point. He says that they have to listen to their fans, and that the winner had the highest number of votes last night. And when it looks like he's going to abdicate all responsibility for the decision, he says, "So obviously, we agree with our public.

"Lukas?

"...

"...

"You're our boy. Welcome."

The crowd goes apeshit, many of them happily. Lukas and Dilana hug for a long time, and she says something to him that the microphone in her hand doesn't quite pick up from over his shoulder. SuperNowCanWeGoHome all stand and shake hands with one another, as if they've accomplished something. My reaction? I’m surprised, and yet not surprised. I thought the band had perfectly plausible reasons not to choose either of them. And besides, I can't help thinking this is more Ruben/Clay than Kelly/Justin.

So now its time to deal with Dilana. Dave's also on his feet as he says, "I absolutely adore you." He calls her a phenomenal singer and performer, and invites her along on the tour to play with the House Band. Not exactly a standout offer, since they've told us that the others are already doing that. Gilby also has something for her to think about afterwards: he's willing to help her write and produce a record of her own. Dilana looks thrilled, because God knows she needs a lot of help writing. Gilby says she's the only one he's made that offer to. Dave also offers to play guitar on said album. That should soften the blow. "I'm down," Tommy adds, even though he's going to be busy with Storm. Dilana pretends to think about it, then agrees. Dilana's farewell speech? It's to her fans, promising that she will put out a record with Gilby and Dave, "And it's going to kick some serious arse." Gilby and Dave wonder how she got this in her datebook so quickly. Then Dilana adds, "Lukas, kick arse, bitch!" And then Lukas is onstage alone, accepting the adulation that he has always known is his due.

Brooke comes out and stands to Lukas, asking, "Hey, guys, are we forgetting something?" Dave agrees that he wants to be "entertained up in this bitch." But instead, the members of SuperNowWeHaveALeadSingerButNoName head up to join Lukas onstage. He gets great big hugs from Tommy and Gilby ("Enjoy this,") Gilby says, while a grumpy-looking Jason takes up position with his bass behind the mic stand. It's only a three-month tour, Jason seems to be telling himself through gritted teeth. Brooke introduces the band: "And here 'they' are together for the first time as a complete band," she says. Well, except for not having a name. "Lukas, how does it feel?" she asks. "Brooke," Lukas answers, "It feels just like this."

And SuperNoName starts playing "Be Yourself." The title of the song appears at the bottom of the screen as usual, but underneath it, where the band name usually goes, it just has a plug for tour tickets. Heh. And God knows what those tickets are going to say on them when they arrive. What's even more worrying is the fact that Lukas's voice doesn't really go all that well with Gilby's backup vocals. Oh well, too late now. Hey, hey, hey, ho, ho, ho. Everyone cheers for the brand-new band that doesn't have a name.

Brooke stands downstage with them, telling us to check out "this supergroup," whoever the hell they are, on tour with the House Band, "your favorite rockers," and The Panic Channel. Oh, and there's some contest on the Rock Star website where we can all win a chance to tour with the band. That sounds like just about the most awkward three months possible for me. Watch me end up sitting between Chris and Zayra at every meal. Brooke also tells us to be on the lookout for the round of auditions and says, "I'll see you summer." Can't fucking wait.

But we're still not done. Brooke leaves the stage to SuperNobody for one more song. Lukas says he wants to bring his boy out, and of course it's fucking Magni. Dude, he's a nice guy, but come on. We've said goodbye. We need to heal. Iceland needs its king. Nonetheless, Magni's there to play rhythm guitar on the song he sang last week, "It's All Love." Which Lukas doesn't sing as well as Magni does, but again, what are you gonna do? Sue them?

Speaking of which, we get a few last looks at the Rock Star: Supernova logo, URL, and credits (stuff they didn't have time to change, in other words) while Brooke VOs one last plug for "the band" on tour. Hee, hee, hee.

And that's it. Time to unplug and load out. Big thanks to Wing Chun for the gig, Mr. Kwan for keeping me in tune, y'all for coming to the shows, and my lovely wife Trash for being the best groupie ever. And of course, not-so-famous original Supernova, for making the finale interesting. See you in the Runaway recaps.
