Thin Blue Line

Thin Blue Line

Previously on The Real World: Brynn realized that she was a negative person and hoped to overcome that trait. Trishelle and Steven had lots and lots of unprotected sex.

The episode opens with a shot of the fountains at the Bellagio, and as someone who witnessed said fountains in person about seventy-two hours ago, let me tell you that they are incredible. And there's something I never thought I would say about a fountain. But I would so much rather watch twenty-two minutes of those fountains, even set to "My Heart Will Go On," than watch these fools week after week. Anyway. Brynn -- wearing a bandanna all kerchief-style with two little pigtails -- calls some dude named Mo and tells him to come over. Brynn is also sporting the "one pant leg up" look that is supposed to be all the rage according to a spread I just saw in some magazine, possibly Us Weekly. It must have been Us Weekly, because I can't imagine there being another magazine that would devote a photo spread to such a ridiculous "trend." We used to call that the peace leg, but I have no idea why. I think it had to do with L.A. gang members somehow. In an interview, Brynn explains that she's been hanging out with Mo and they're trying to figure out if they should pursue a relationship (they're fucking until they get sick of each other). The phone rings and Trishelle says that it's Austin. In an interview, Brynn explains that she met Austin a week before coming to Vegas. On the phone, Austin is all excited because he's coming to Vegas the day. Brynn informs him that she's changing her sheets. Um, thanks? In an interview, Brynn says that she's nervous and excited for Austin's visit (nervous that he'll mess up her relationship with Mo but excited because she might get laid before that happens). Austin says he likes Brynn to be happy, and she says she'll be happy when he gets there. Brynn starts pulling roses out of a flower arrangement on the counter, and says she needs to get rid of them before Austin gets there. Couldn't she just remove the card? In an interview, Trishelle says that Brynn is playing the field, going out with Mo tonight when Austin arrives the day. Brynn says that she can't believe she's doing that.

Brynn hangs out with Mo at the bar. Mo says that she's playing games. Brynn says that she's hung out with lots of guys, but that she's never met one with whom she enjoys conversation as much as she does with Mo. Brynn also says, "You know what I mean?" about a thousand times in that one sentence. Brynn says that when Austin calls her, she's not that excited to talk to him, and she's worried that she doesn't like him anymore. You know what I mean? Brynn adds that she's always scared to leave someone she's dating, in case she never finds someone else. You know what I mean? Yes, that is a healthy way to evaluate relationships. This guy hits me? But what if I never find someone else? Brynn needs to Kelly Taylor it, and choose herself, stat.

Thin Blue Line

But if she knows her body and knows she's not pregnant, why is she nervous? Plus, how many people know their bodies that well? I know women who have said they knew they were pregnant, but it's usually in retrospect, after the pregnancy was confirmed. In other words, shut up, Trishelle, and get your ass an EPT.

Brynn and Mo return to the suite. Brynn is wearing that pink diagonally striped dress that we've seen a few times this season -- I think she was even wearing it for portions of Forkgate. But I never realized that it's short in the back and long in the front, a look that I thought went out with Stephanie Seymour's wedding dress in the video for "November Rain." Actually, it wasn't even cool then. Mo plays pool with Alton. In an interview, Brynn says that Mo gets along with Brynn's roommates. In an interview, Alton explains that Brynn might pick Mo over Austin. In the bathroom, Brynn tells Trishelle that now she doesn't want Austin to come for a visit. In an interview, Trishelle says that she wishes Brynn and Mo would get together for real, but Brynn just seems to be looking for "a pastime." That's an interesting way of putting it. Brynn and Mo hop into bed and snuggle up. In an interview, Brynn says that she's lonely, and it's easier to have someone there.

Trishelle walks out of the bathroom and tells Steven that she's about to throw up. This whole scene uses the Comic Sans Captioning, but they've reduced the size to like 10 pt instead of 14 pt. It's still Comic Sans, though, and it still gives me a stomachache. Speaking of things that give me a stomachache, in an interview, Trishelle says that she's told Steven that she's late. Trishelle hops into bed with Steven and says that she knows her body and she knows that she's late because of nerves, and not because she's with child. In an interview, Steven says he thinks Trishelle is just trying to make him feel better. Trishelle tells Steven that if anything happened, he shouldn't worry, which I took to be code for "I'll get an abortion," although I guess it could have been code for "I'll give it up for adoption" or even just "I won't make you pay child support." Steven says he's not worried, and that he knows Trishelle will tell him if anything happens. In an interview, Trishelle says that Steven wants to know for sure one way or the other, but she's hesitant. Why? Why be hesitant? Especially if she knows her body and knows she's not pregnant. Just take it and get it over with. Ugh. She's so frustrating, and so, so dumb.

The female roommates have lunch together. Trishelle gets up and leaves the table; one of them notes that Trishelle is nauseated. Join the club. Irulan says that Trishelle could be pregnant, and adds that she doesn't have her birth control pills there in Vegas. Arissa adds that Trishelle is two weeks late. Two weeks? And she hasn't taken a test yet? Jesus Christ. I thought maybe she was like three or four days late. I have friends who faithfully used birth control and still took a test after being a few days late. Because they are responsible and wanted to deal with the issue as necessary. In an interview, Brynn says, "I slept with a guy, got pregnant, and didn't have a baby because I'm not ready to take care of a kid because I can't even take care of myself." There was a lot of debate about that statement in the forums, but I think it's pretty clear that Brynn is saying that she had an abortion without actually using the word "abortion." In an interview, Trishelle says that even though she's not ready to have a child, she doesn't think it's fair to have an abortion just because you were irresponsible. Okay, I am all for a woman's right to choose, and that means a woman's right to choose either way. But if she had any inkling that she might be pregnant, and she knew that she didn't believe in abortion, how irresponsible is it for her to be boozing it up every night? Or not eating? Or not going to a doctor to get her pregnancy (or lack thereof) confirmed? I used to feel sorry for Trishelle, but now I kind of hate her.

Thin Blue Line

Brynn gets a call from Austin, and he says that he's downstairs. Brynn and Irulan head for the elevator. In an interview, Brynn says she's nervous to see him, and that she's taking Irulan as a buffer. Brynn says she's nervous about not remembering Austin, and Irulan says that Mo is clouding her thoughts. Brynn gives Austin a big hug. In an interview, Irulan says that Austin "seems super, super-chill." I haven't gotten a good look at Austin yet, but what's up with the bleached-blond spiked tips? In an interview, Brynn says that she's happy to see Austin. They head up to the rooftop. Brynn says that she's happy to hear that Austin kissed other people while she's been in Vegas, because now she doesn't feel bad for doing the same, since they barely know each other. In an interview, Brynn says she wants to tell Austin about the things she's done and get it out in the open so she doesn't have to hide. Brynn tells Austin that she doesn't want to lose him, and that she met Mo, but only thought about Austin. Well, that's a bald-faced lie, since we saw her telling Mo that Austin kind of bored her. I have no problem with dating multiple people at once, but at least be honest with them. Austin (who isn't bad-looking, but has a few too many (i.e. any) facial piercings for my taste) says that now he's worried, and is curious to see what will happen this week.

Brynn and Austin walk around Vegas, laughing. In an interview, Brynn says that her time with Austin was one of the best weeks she's had in Vegas. And that was the whole scene. I love montages!

In the bathroom, Trishelle tells Arissulan that Steven wants them to go buy a pregnancy test together. Then she rolls her eyes like you did as a teen when your mom told you that, yes, you did have to go to your aunt's house for dinner, and yes, you did have to pretend that you liked the asparagus, and no, you couldn't ditch early and go to the mall. In an interview, Trishelle says that if she is pregnant, her life as she knows it has ended. Trishelle explains that Steven said she has to do this. Is this really a revelation to her? Why is she surprised that she has to do this? Arissulan agree with Steven. In an interview, Arissulan say that Trishelle needs to buy a test immediately, and that none of them are prepared to handle a potential Trishelle pregnancy. Dude, me neither. Although I don't think it matter if any of us can handle it. I think it matters if Trishelle and Steven can handle it. But leave it to a Real World roommate to make this all about herself. Irulan doesn't think Steven would make a good father. I would give Irulan props for saying that, but it's like saying, "I think people come to Las Vegas to gamble." Um, duh?

Brynn and Austin go out for sushi, and no, that's not a euphemism. Austin thinks that their week together has been great. Brynn says that with other boys, kissing is just kissing, but with Austin, it's so much more. In an interview, Brynn says that Austin is genuine and happy. Austin tells Brynn that she sucked him in, and no, that's not a euphemism either. At least I don't think it is. Ew. Brynn says that she's "the sand pit from hell." She should put that on her business cards: Brynn, the Sarlacc Pit. Austin says that he wants to keep sinking. Ew, that was kind of cheesy. In an interview, Brynn says that while she wants to be committed and trustworthy, she doesn't think that she can. Brynn says that she's scared and Austin says she's not very optimistic. What is he, new? This is Brynn, the negative Nellie.

Trishelle says that she's nervous about taking the pregnancy test and scared to possibly have a baby. Now she's nervous and scared? What happened to her 'don't worry, get drunky' philosophy?

Steven and Trishelle sit in a plastic hanging chair and look glum. In an interview, Trishelle says that she's nervous about taking the pregnancy test and scared to possibly have a baby. Now she's nervous and scared? What happened to her "don't worry, get drunky" philosophy? Trishelle says that she'd keep the baby. Steven says that he would raise the child, because he could handle it. In an interview, Trishelle says that shocked her because she doesn't know if a child would fit into Steven's lifestyle. In an interview, Steven says he thinks he would be a good father. Of course he does. He also thought he would be a good husband, but his ex-wife obviously begs to differ. And he thought he would be a good roommate, and I take some issue with that. I can't decide who would be a scarier parent -- Steven or Trishelle. I think Steven, because he has high enough self-esteem that he wouldn't realize how much he sucked, whereas Trishelle would start crying and then throw up and then give the baby to her sister or something. Steven adds, as a reason for why he would be a good father, "I'm very free with love." Which is how he got into this mess in the first place. Trishelle says that she's fine, but she thinks Steven is nervous. He says she's making him more nervous. In an interview, Steven says that if Trishelle's pregnant, it will bind them for the rest of their lives, which is okay with him.

The suite is very, very messy. The editors zoom in on the giant bowl of condoms on the table, in case you thought that Steven and Trishelle weren't using them because it was too difficult to go to the store. Nope, they had a ton of them right there in the suite. Idiots. Brynn and Austin make out in bed. Arissa walks in with a crowd of people, including Mo. In the bedroom, Brynn suddenly starts crying and says she's pissed off. In an interview, Arissa says that she brought Mo over. Trishelle walks into the bedroom and confirms for Brynn that Mo is there. Irulan tells Brynn that they are all going out, and that Brynn and Austin are welcome to join them or not. Brynn -- who is sporting some serious bedhead -- says that she wants to do something with all of them. This is where the whole scenario goes horribly wrong for me. Brynn and Austin could have the whole suite to themselves, or they could go out with a group of people, including Brynn's other boyfriend. Which sounds more fun to you? In an interview, Brynn says that she was excited to have both boys at the same bar, since she could have both of them. See, that is not a rational response to me. I mean, if they accidentally ended up in the same place, then she should make the best of it. But to purposely get them together just so that she can feel more attractive? That's messed up. Brynn asks Austin if he's okay hanging out with Mo. Austin asks if Brynn and Mo hooked up, and she gives him a "Uh, yeah!" grin. Austin exhales and then agrees to go. While I admire his spirit, I would tell Brynn to fuck off.

Trishelle says Brynn's excuse is a cop-out, because jealousy is not an excuse for bitchiness. Who knew Trishelle had a spine? Or a brain? Or that they were attached to each other in some way?

Brynn walks out in the Smoking Foyer, where Austin is playing acoustic guitar. She hugs him as he plays. In an interview, Brynn says she doesn't think she's worthy of being loved because she's such a mean person. Dude, she is seriously messed up. Austin and Brynn hug. In an interview, Brynn says that she's realizing who she is and it feels good to change.

Steven and Frank get into the van outside a drugstore. Frank opens a bag and pulls out a pregnancy test. God, finally! We hear Steven say, "I bought you something!" There was some debate on the forums about who bought what. I got the impression that Steven bought it and then called Trishelle to tell her, while Frank checked out the package. In an interview, Frank says that if Trishelle is pregnant, he's confident that Steven will do the right thing and take care of the child. Steven says that he knows being a dad would be hard work, but he thinks it would be good for him, and give him a purpose in life. Because there's nothing like using a child to test out your own limits of responsibility. I think the government should require Steven to get a vasectomy at this point, because he's shown himself to be both stupid and irresponsible. Frank laughs that there are better reasons to have a child than to give yourself a purpose. Steven says that it would be a pretty kid. Frank agrees, "It would be a pretty kid. But you're both dumb as rocks." Okay, Frank, you got me. There I am all hating you and your Umbros and your women issues, and then you say that, and I'm won over. But you're still on probation.

No Doubt plays as Brynn walks Austin to the elevator. In an interview, Brynn says that she's had a good time with Austin, and that no one has kissed her the way that he does. They kiss goodbye as Brynn cries. In an interview, Brynn says she cares about Austin, and that it could become something more. Austin leaves and Brynn cries. Then she runs inside and calls Mo. Just kidding. But she probably totally did.
