Justice

Karen chases a criminal on foot through some sort of loading-dock area. She's wearing kind of a strange outfit for Karen: a sweatshirt with the sleeves cut off, dress pants, and high-heeled boots. Luckily for her, given her athletic endeavors at the moment, the boots have a stack heel instead of a stiletto. "Mas" by Kinky plays on the soundtrack. I think Kinky is the new Fatboy Slim. Anyway, Karen runs and comes very close to catching the criminal. The guy glances over his shoulder to see that Karen is right there, and then a car screeches up and hits him. The guy goes flying over the hood. Karen looks horrified. Konner (Gary Cole) gets out of the car and cuffs the guy. Karen asks what Konner's doing, since that's her collar. Konner doesn't answer the question, and just says he's been looking for this guy. He asks Karen if she needs a ride as she gapes at him, and tries to catch her breath after all that running.

Fade up on some sort of Marshal Morning Meeting. Amos says that someone needs to transport Eddie Donetti to Denver. One of the Marshals advises everyone to stay away from that job, because Eddie Donetti doesn't bathe. Karen walks in and sits down. Amos tells her that she's late. Karen apologizes and sits down. A fellow Marshal whispers that she's moving slow today, and that he heard she had quite a workout. Karen asks who told him that, and gives Konner the stinkeye. The guy says that word gets around, but Amos totally busts him for not paying attention and assigns him the stinky Donetti transport. The guy complains about sitting on a plane with the smelly guy for four hours, and Amos says that it will actually be two days in a car, because Donetti won't fly. Everyone chuckles. Amos assigns the guy a partner, and then announces that he's got three fugitives who were released from prison in Biloxi and then, one day later, robbed a bookstore in Decatur. Konner adds that they stole a car and turned up in St. Petersburg. Konner says that he's got his eye on this one. Amos asks if he knows the fugitives, and instead of answering the question, Konner explains that he knows the guy who roomed with one of them in prison. Konner thinks he can talk to the cellmate and find out the fugitives' plans. Amos says that Konner will need backup. Konner wants to go alone. Amos refuses, and tells Konner to choose a partner. Konner, to the surprise of no one, chooses Karen. Well, Karen seemed surprised. No one else was. Amos says, "Done."

Karen walks into Amos's office and asks if they can talk about the situation. Amos says no. Karen tries to rephrase, but Amos says that Konner is "an arrogant son of a bitch" who stole Karen's collar, and that the cons are "a couple of alphas in a cage." Karen doesn't think that's the point, and Amos says the point is that she's the only one he's got who can keep up with Konner. Amos asks if she can do that. Konner walks in and asks if Karen's ready to get started. Karen asks for a minute. She looks back at Amos, trying to figure out how to get out of this. Amos doesn't even look up at her, and just says, "Work it out." Karen huffs and turns around.

Konner and Karen walk though the office, both talking, neither onelistening to the other. Konner says that he talked to the warden in Biloxi, and that they can get in to talk to the cellmate tonight, so he booked them on a flight. He tells Karen to go home, pack a bag, and meet back there in an hour. Karen tells him that if they're going to work together, they need to get a few things straight. Konner asks if she was saying something. Oh, man. What an ass! Karen asks why he chose her. Konner says she's smart, has good instincts, and he thinks he can count on her. Karen asks if she can count on him. Konner promises that they'll get along fine, and reminds her to be back in an hour. Karen checks out the mug shots of the three fugitives.

The three fugitives hang out to their car in an underpass. Hey, is that the same one where Carl beat on the steering wheel? Again? Is that underpass going to be in every episode? One of the fugitives -- a big guy named Fuzz -- asks if they are lost. Another one tells Fuzz just to worry about his tapes. He studies a map while Fuzz listens to and repeats after some Spanish language tapes. My Spanish isn't that great, but I think Fuzz is learning how to ask for a beer. Fuzz asks Six (an angry-looking fugitive) how you say, "Where's Jamaal's sister's house?" in Spanish. Jamaal is the one with the map. Six says he doesn't know Spanish. Fuzz tells him he should learn, because it might come in handy in Mexico. Jamaal reminds Fuzz that they are going to Costa Rica, and adds that Six would be just as dumb in Spanish as he is in English. Six says he was smart enough to get them the tapes. Jamaal says that Six was smart enough to rob the bookstore when they were six bucks short, and now their parole is blown. Fuzz says they were just trying to help. Jamaal reminds him that Six got them in prison in the first place, because they had a plan and he screwed it up. I would have to guess that they were in prison because they were committing a crime, and Six just caused them to get caught. But they probably still deserved prison time. Six checks to see if his gun is loaded. Jamaal tells him to put his gun away. Six doesn't want Jamaal talking like that. Fuzz defuses the tension by asking if they are going on a boat. Jamaal says they are. Fuzz is very "I want to pet the rabbits, George!" Six wants to go to Chicago instead. Jamaal says that "he" will find them in Chicago. Six says he's not afraid of "him." Jamaal says that Trey wasn't either, and look what happened to him. Six says he's out of there as soon as they get to the bus stop. Jamaal says that Six can do what he wants once Jamaal and Fuzz are free, but for now, they all have to stay together. Jamaal gets into the driver's seat and Six hops in back. Jamaal starts the car, and the language tape plays as they drive away.

Karen and Konner sit on a plane. Karen is writing things on a legal pad. Konner notes that she doesn't talk much. Karen asks if there's something he wants to talk about. Konner apologizes for stealing her collar, and Karen says it's a little late. Konner claims he thought Karen was going to lose the criminal, but that he was wrong, and he apologizes. Karen accepts. Konner has to add, "You still might have lost him. Just an observation." Karen asks if Konner's ever worked with a partner. He asks why, and she says that he's "not much of a people person," but that it's "just an observation." Prickly! Konner tells Karen that she's tough, and Karen says that she is when she needs to be. Konner asks if she's fair, and Karen says she thinks she is. Konner tells her, "Yeah, well, you'll get over that." Karen gives him a look of disbelief.

Karen and Konner arrive at the prison in Biloxi. Karen's phone rings, and it's her dad, who tells her that she's late. Karen explains that she's in Biloxi. Marshall tells her that it's a good thing he called, because she's all out of shrimp, the implication being that she could pick some up in Biloxi. Karen explains that she's at the prison, and that she's working with a new guy from D.C. named Konner. She adds that Konner stole her collar yesterday. Marshall asks if Konner is any good. Karen says he is, but that she can't get a take on him. Marshall asks if she knows something about him, and Karen says that it's just a feeling. Marshall advises her to go with it, and says she might learn something. Karen asks what. Marshall quotes, "Experience yields information. You can't learn less. You must learn more," and tells her that it's Buckminster Fuller. Karen prepares to hang up. Marshall says that they'll miss her tonight at their poker game. Karen says that they'll really just miss her money. She reminds her father, "Don't draw to the inside straight and leave the toilet seat down, all right?" Marshall laughs and hangs up, telling Frank that she's talking about him. One of the other poker players asks Marshall if he was talking about Konner from D.C. Marshall asks if he knows Konner. The guy says he's heard of him.

Konner asks Karen if she read the file. Karen says that their fugitives got busted three years ago robbing a liquor store in Crystal City, which Karen knows is in D.C. Karen says that Jamaal's brother Trey was killed. Konner adds that it was three years ago in Baltimore, and that it remains unsolved, but he claims it was gang-related. Karen adds that Jamaal has a sister named Pauline, and Konner says that she lives in South D.C. Karen wonders why the fugitives are in Florida. Konner doesn't have a snappy comeback for that one.

A car pulls up to a house. A woman gets out of the car and opens her trunk, pulling out some grocery bags. As she closes the trunk, Jamaal walks up and says, "Hey, sis." The woman hands him the grocery bags, and then slaps him across the face, explaining that it's for stealing money out of her purse the last time he was home. She says hello to Fuzz, who calls her Naomi. Six asks why she won't say hello to him, and Naomi says that she's not talking to him. Naomi explains that their parole officer called Pauline and said that they robbed a bookstore. Naomi says she knows that can't be true, because none of them is smart enough to read. Fuzz pipes up and says that they got book on tape. Jamaal quickly says that they need a place to stay for one night. Naomi reminds him that she has Calvin to think of. Jamaal says "please." Naomi relents, but tells them to be quiet on the way in, because Calvin (who is her son) is sleeping. The fugitives follow her into the house.

Naomi walks in and asks the babysitter if Calvin is okay. Once she determines that he is, Naomi introduces the sitter to the fugitives, explaining that Jamaal is her brother and Six is her baby daddy. She refers to Six as "that little skinny punk with no sense of obligation."

Karen and Konner talk to the prisoner who roomed with one of the fugitives. Karen explains that the fugitives robbed a bookstore, and one of them knocked over a security guard and stole his gun. What kind of crazy bookstore has armed security guards? The prisoner says it sounds like something Six Pack would do, and that it's been quiet since he left. Konner asks if the prisoner didn't like playing house with Six. The prisoner asks Karen if he has to "take that from [Konner]." Karen advises him to pretend that Konner asked him nicely. The prisoner says that he didn't like being Six Pack's cellie. He says that they called him Six Pack because "he's about six times as bad as 2Pac." Konner says that math wasn't his strong suit. Heh. The prisoner totally doesn't get it. Karen asks about the other two. The prisoner says that Jamaal and Fuzz watched out for Six, and that they all hung around together. Karen asks if he heard them making plans. The prisoner says that Jamaal was a cook and wanted to start up his own restaurant making "creosole food." Karen corrects him, "Creole," and the prisoner says it's the same thing. Konner stands up and leans against the wall behind the prisoner, who says that Six wasn't in any hurry to get out, because he felt safer in prison than outside. Karen asks about Six's friends, and the prisoner says they're all dead. Karen asks about family, and the prisoner says that Six and Jamaal had a fight over Jamaal's sister once. Karen thinks he means Pauline, but the prisoner says he's talking about Jamaal's half-sister, Naomi. Karen asks where the half-sister lives. The prisoner grins and says, "You give me a conjugal, I might tell you." Konner swiftly reaches out and smashes the prisoner's face into the table. Whoa! The prisoner says that Naomi lives in Florida. Konner smacks the prisoner again for good measure, and Karen gives Konner a warning look.

Karen and Konner arrive at a motel. Karen says that she found a Naomi Watson living in Tampa. ["I loved her in The Ring!" -- Wing Chun] Konner holds out two room keys and asks if she wants the room with the fleas, or the room with the lice. Karen chooses one and he says, "Fleas. Good choice." Karen is surprised that Konner has a sense of humor, and tells him that now he needs to work on his people skills. Konner asks if she's referring to the prisoner. Karen says that Konner almost cracked the prisoner's skull. Konner says that it got results. Karen isn't so sure, and says that in her experience, if someone feels safer on the inside, it's because he's scared of someone on the outside. Karen concludes that they are not the only ones after the fugitives. Konner says it doesn't matter, because they'll find the fugitives first. Konner stops before they enter their rooms, and compliments Karen on her work today. Karen thanks him. Konner says she reminds him of himself once. Karen asks what he means by that, honestly curious. Konner tells her to forget it, and they go into their respective rooms.

Naomi can't believe that Jamaal is asking her for $3000, since that's about all of the money she has saved up. She asks him why he wants to go to Costa Rica. Jamaal explains that he wants to open up a restaurant on the beach and sell jambalaya. Naomi disparages his plan, but Jamaal insists that they'll be all right. Naomi wonders how he's planning on getting to Costa Rica. Jamaal claims that he knows a guy in Miami who can get them out, and that they will leave the morning on a freighter. Naomi thinks he's dreaming, and suggests that they turn themselves in. Jamaal says that he'd rather be "in the ground than back in prison." I feel the same way. I've seen Oz. Naomi thinks that's exactly where Jamaal will end up. Jamaal asks what her problem is. Naomi says her problem is that he brought trouble into her house when her son was there, and then asked for her life savings. Naomi concludes that Jamaal is her problem. They stare at each other for a while, and then Jamaal says he'll leave and solve her problem. Calvin, who's probably about seven years old, comes out. Naomi asks why he's up, and he says he heard a noise. Naomi asks if he remembers his Uncle Jamaal. Calvin asks Jamaal if he's been in jail. Jamaal says that he has. Calvin asks if he's staying, and Jamaal says that he's just passing through. Jamaal is amazed at how big Calvin is. Yes, that's what children do. They grow. If they don't, that's when you should be worried. At least that's what I hear.

Karen watches television in her motel room and reads files. Her phone rings. It's her father, of course. He asks how things are going with Konner. Karen says that the jury is still out. Marshall says that if she's curious, it turns out that he knows a guy who knows a guy who used to work with Konner and his partner. Karen is surprised to hear that Konner used to have a partner. Marshall offers to set up a conversation between Karen and his friend, and Karen promises to let him know if she wants that. She asks how he did tonight. Marshall says that in the last hand, with a big pot, he drew to an inside straight and cleaned everyone out. Karen asks if that's true, and Marshall says that it should've been and hangs up. Karen laughs as she thoughtfully closes her cell phone.

On the other side of the motel-room wall, Konner reclines on his bed, shirtless, having a drink. Man, who knew Gary Cole had such a good bod? He's kind of hot. Ew, I just thought Bill Lumbergh was hot. ["He totally is, though. He's the new stealth hot guy. He's the new William Fichtner!" -- Wing Chun] Anyway, Konner stands up and walks over to the mirror, where he has stuck each fugitive's mug shot. He stares at them, thoughtfully and possibly a little maliciously.

Karen walks into a diner (part of the motel?) the morning and finds Konner buying coffee. He hands her a coffee and asks how she slept, and she says that the fleas kept her awake. She asks how he slept, and he responds, "On my back." Heh. Karen thanks him for the coffee, and he says that's what a partner does. I definitely need a recapping partner to bring me coffee and suchlike. ["Couldn't you train your dog to do that stuff?" -- Wing Chun] Karen takes the opportunity to bring up Konner's last partner, Eddie O'Hara. Karen asks if things just didn't work out between them. Konner says it was something like that. Karen asks what happened, and Konner says he asked too many questions.

Over at Naomi's house, Jamaal is cooking up some jambalaya. Isn't it a little early for jambalaya? Naomi enters the house and hands Jamaal an envelope full of money. He promises to make it up to her and thanks her. She says he's welcome, and notices that he's making jambalaya. She shows him a picture Calvin drew this morning of three men standing on a beach, waiting for a boat. Fuzz laughs, "Hey, that's us!" Calvin. Not so bright.

Outside, Six plays catch with his son. He tells Calvin that he probably won't be around for a while. Calvin asks if he's going back to prison. Six says he's not, and tells Calvin that he and his mom will be better off without Six. Naomi walks out on the porch, unbeknownst to Six, and listens in. Six wants Calvin to be a better man than he was. Calvin wonders what kind of man Six thinks he will be. Six thinks Calvin will be a good man with his father's looks and his mother's brains. Naomi seems kind of touched until Six leans forward and she sees the gun sticking out of his waistband. She quickly orders Calvin to come inside. Six doesn't understand what he did. Jamaal walks out to find out what's going on. Naomi says that she doesn't want Six around Calvin ever again, because he brought a gun to her house. Jamaal tries to make peace, but Naomi tells him to take her car if he needs to, but to get out of her house and never return. Fuzz walks out and asks if they're going to eat. Naomi and Jamaal stare at each other. Jamaal says they have to go, and that they'll get some food on the way. Jamaal looks at Six like, "You messed up again, man!" Six pretends he doesn't care, but clearly he does.

Naomi sits at her kitchen table, thinking. Karen and Konner pull up to her house and spot the car that the fugitives were driving. Karen whips out her cell phone. Konner asks whom she's calling, and Karen says that she's making contact with the local police department as a courtesy. Konner warns her not to do that, because it will bring out "a bunch of heroes looking for promotions." Karen thinks Konner doesn't have much faith in his fellow lawmen, and Konner says he just thinks they can handle it themselves. Konner pulls out his gun and prepares to go inside. Karen suggests that they make a plan first. Konner says he's got one. Karen gives his a warning look as she prepares to join him.

Karen and Konner approach Naomi's house with their guns drawn. Karen runs around to the back of the house. Konner tries the front door, which is locked. He kicks it in. Whoa. Isn't he supposed to announce himself first? Naomi hugs her terrified son. Konner asks where the fugitives are. Naomi says that they aren't there. Karen busts in the back door. Konner gets angrier the more Naomi claims she doesn't know where the men are. Karen scans the house and runs into the living room, where Konner and Naomi are in a standoff. Finally, Karen gives Konner a look like, "Back off! There's a kid involved." Konner says he'll have a look around.

Later, Konner interrogates Naomi, who must have told him that the guys were there and then left. Konner threatens to call Naomi's employer if she won't give up any more information. Naomi says she has nothing to hide. Karen suggests that Konner check the car outside. Once he's gone, Karen plays good cop and asks Naomi if Jamaal is her only brother. Naomi says she started out with three, and that Jamaal is the youngest. Karen figures that Naomi wants to help him out, but doesn't know how or what is the right thing to do. Karen picks up the picture that Calvin drew, which you totally knew was going to be the thing that led the cops to the fugitives, so I don't know why Naomi didn't burn it or something. She asks Calvin about it, specifically about the boat. Karen and Calvin both look to Naomi for guidance, and she asks Karen to promise her that the men won't get hurt.

Karen and Konner exit the house. Karen shares she learned that the men are going to Costa Rica, and they leave from Miami. She's also got the make of their car. Karen tells Konner that it's amazing what you can learn when you're not "breaking people's heads"; she suggests that he try it sometime. Konner says that the men could be anywhere, but Karen says that they could also be nearby. They get into their car and drive away.

The three men are in a convenience store, stocking up. Fuzz grabs armfuls of junk food while Jamaal lectures Six about being more careful, and scolds him for bringing weapons around Naomi's house. Six claims that it's his son, and he was only trying to help. The guy playing Six is a really bad actor. It doesn't help that the guy playing Jamaal is really good, so Six suffers in comparison. Jamaal says that Six needs to think once in a while. Meanwhile, Karen and Konner drive by and Karen spots the fugitives' car in the parking lot.

Six and Jamaal continue to argue in the convenience store. Jamaal suggests that once they get out, Six should go off on his own. Six agrees, and says that Jamaal and Fuzz can go to Costa Rica, but he's going home. Jamaal asks how he plans to do that, and Six says he'll figure it out. Six spots Karen and Konner in the parking lot, and he warns the others, "Somebody's out there! I think it's him!" An alarm sounds, and the fugitives run for the back of the store. Konner tells Karen that he'll take the back door, and starts running when he spots the fugitives. Karen, meanwhile, is carefully checking the store's interior. She hears a gunshot and takes off running. When she gets outside, she finds Konner standing over Six's body. Six has taken a bullet, right in the center of his forehead. A gun lies on the ground near his hand. Karen looks at Konner, who calmly says, "Got 'im." Karen is stunned -- at Konner's audacity, I guess. Jamaal and Fuzz are still running through the streets.

Amos asks Konner what happened. Konner says it couldn't be helped. Amos says that Karen and Konner "left quite a mess up there for a couple of seasoned pros," and now they have a "corpse in need of an explanation." Konner says he showed his badge, told Six to freeze, and Six pulled out a gun. Amos asks why, and Konner says he has no idea. Amos says that Konner had his weapon out, but that Six fired anyway. Konner says that Six's shot missed, and that he went for critical mass. Wouldn't that be shooting for his chest or something? Not right in the center of his forehead? That seems more like execution-style. Amos asks if Karen can confirm this. Karen says she can confirm that there were two shots, but that she didn't see the rest. Amos says that since there are no witnesses, the department will want to investigate. Konner stands up and starts walking out while claiming that's fine with him. Amos adds that, in the meantime, Konner is off the warrant. Konner asks why, because he feels it was a justified shooting. Amos says it isn't until Amos says it is. Konner says, "You're not serious." Amos gives his most serious face, which is pretty goddamn serious. Konner says he understands that it's regulations, and asks about Karen. Amos says she wasn't involved in the shooting, so it's her choice, and then asks Konner to excuse them. Konner leaves. Amos asks Karen if there's something he should know. Karen shakes her head and unconvincingly says there isn't.

On the beach, Jamaal talks to his boat connection on a pay phone while Fuzz plays in the sand. Jamaal promises that they have the money and writes down an address where they will meet. He hangs up and tells Fuzz that they just have to lie low for a little while longer. They walk off.

Karen walks through the parking garage. Konner is waiting for her, and asks if she's ready to go. He explains that he knows a guy at the docks who specializes in relocations. Karen asks if she missed something, since he's supposed to be off the case. Konner says that they can't let "a little red tape" slow them down. Karen wants to stick by Amos's ruling. Konner says that Karen can file the reports, and Konner will "stay low on the radar." Yeah, until he kills another fugitive. Karen asks if Konner's killed fugitives before. Konner says he did what he had to do. Karen asks if that's what happened with his former partner, and if that's what happened this morning: Konner does what he needs to do to get it done. Konner says he doesn't follow. Karen says that the shots she heard were at least two or three seconds apart, and that if Six shot first, she wonders why Konner waited so long to return fire. Konner says, "Don't push it, Sisco." Karen replies, "Don't make me." Konner says he doesn't need this, so he's going to split for a while. He claims he'll go down to the Keys and do some fishing. Is anyone buying this? Is Karen? Karen says she thinks that might be best. Konner asks to be kept posted, and Karen says she will. They part ways.

Karen walks to her car and calls her father on her cell phone. She asks to talk to his friend who knows Konner.

Cut to Karen and some old guy talking at a beachfront bar. You know, I have never once wanted to visit or live in Miami, but this show is kind of tempting me, because they make it look so pretty. Of course, you can't feel heat and humidity through the television. Karen asks Retired Cop if he knew Konner well. RC says that no one did, except maybe his partner, O'Hara, and that the two of them "were more at home in the jungle than out of it." Karen points out that it's not a jungle, and RC says it was for them. RC explains that Konner's partner was a drunk. He relates a story of a time they were chasing a fugitive through a burning building, and the roof was about to cave in, and O'Hara stopped at the fridge to pick up a beer. Karen asks how she can get in touch with O'Hara. RC says she should try a psychic, because he's dead. Karen asks how it happened. RC says he fell ten stories. RC adds that O'Hara and Konner were on a warrant, and one minute O'Hara was on the roof, and the he wasn't. There were "five bangers on the roof, getting loaded," and Konner brought them all in. The autopsy on O'Hara said that his B.A.C. was .20 plus, so the kids walked. Karen asks if he remembers the kids' names. RC doesn't. Karen pulls out mug shots of her three fugitives. RC says it could be them. He heard that two of the kids disappeared: "Nobody knows how, and nobody asked why."

Karen calls some guy named Phil, and asks if he's been working ports. He has. She asks the name of a guy who's been smuggling cons to Costa Rica. Phil says it sounds like Luis, and Karen says they should bring him in.

Cut to an interrogation room. Karen and Phil talk to Luis, who thinks at first that Karen is a transcriptionist. Karen puts out Luis's cigarette for him and asks if he's a travel agent. Luis plays dumb. Phil advises Luis not to piss Karen off, because she's not after him. Karen says she's not yet. Luis says he's "been known to facilitate movement from one place to another from time to time." Karen asks if business is good. Luis says that people have places to go. Karen shows Luis the mug shots of Jamaal and Fuzz, and says that they're heading to Costa Rica. Luis says he has no idea. Karen notices Luis's face and asks where he got his black eye. Luis: "Punched myself shaving." Heh. Phil gives Luis a warning look. Luis asks why he should talk to them, and laughs at the idea of Karen running him in. Karen tells Luis that she'll take him on a drive around his neighborhood in a big car with flashing lights. Luis gets the hint and says he was supposed to meet the guys a couple of hours ago, but that they didn't show. Karen sighs. Luis tells her to check with "that other guy," who "had a badge just like [Karen's]." Karen asks if she means Phil. How dumb is she really? This episode is bugging me because the whole plot revolves around Karen not figuring it out, when it's so, so obvious. And that just makes Karen look dumb, which is not the Karen we've seen in episodes. Anyway, Luis says that the guy is white, tall, and serious with a mean right hook.

Karen walks into Amos's office. She says he asked if there was something he should know. Amos asks if she's talking about Konner, and that he thought Konner went fishing. Yes, he's probably fishing in that swampland in Florida I bought last week. Get a grip, people! Karen says, "No, he's not fishing. He's hunting."

Fuzz and Jamaal walk through an alley. Fuzz says he thought Luis had their tickets, and doesn't understand why they don't go and get them. Jamaal says that he saw Konner there, so they had to run. Jamaal hears a siren and checks it out, then keeps walking. Jamaal curses Six, saying that if it wasn't for him, they'd be free right now. Fuzz doesn't want Jamaal to talk shit about Six, and says he wants to go home. Jamaal tries to think of an alternate plan, but Fuzz just wants to go home. He keeps repeating it until Jamaal snaps at him. Jamaal says he's so busy looking out for everyone else that he's not taking care of himself. Jamaal adds that if they stay together, they're dead. Fuzz is like, "Can we pet the rabbits, George?" Jamaal starts to walk off. Fuzz asks him to point him towards D.C. Jamaal stops and looks back at Fuzz, then motions for him to join him. Fuzz does.

Karen sits at her desk, looking things up on her computer. She's reading O'Hara's autopsy report, including his elevated blood alcohol level. Her phone rings. It's Naomi, who says that Jamaal told her to call. Naomi told him he could trust Karen, and that he wants to turn himself in tonight, but only to Karen. She says it's fine. Naomi starts to tell her what Jamaal says about Konner, but Karen says she already knows. She arranges the meet.

Karen walks through a parking garage. Her car is the only one left. She hears a noise, and looks that way while pulling out her cell phone. She dials a number and then waits. Across the garage, another phone rings. Konner answers it and says, "Nice move." See, that's smart! Karen slowly starts walking toward Konner's car, and asks how fishing went, and if he caught anything. Konner says he hasn't yet, but he will. Karen tells him that the kids didn't kill his partner, because his partner was drunk. Konner replies: "You disappoint me. I thought you got it, how it was with us and them. We stand up and die; they kill us and walk." This is all very Midnight Caller. Karen says that there is no "them," because bad guys have faces and Konner knew that once. As she approaches Konner's car, Karen slowly pulls her gun out of her bag. Konner says he knows what he's become. Karen swings around the back of an SUV with her gun drawn, but there's no one there. And Konner has hung up the phone. A Konner's-eye-view camera shot shows us that he's actually up another level in the garage, watching her. Karen gets into her car and peels out.

Jamaal and Fuzz are at a club. Fuzz says he likes that place while checking out some chick's ass. Jamaal says he has another call to make, and tells Fuzz to stay with him. The two men walk towards the back. Karen walks in the front door, flashing her badge. She makes her way through the crowds. Jamaal talks to someone (Naomi?) on a payphone, asking where Karen is, and says they can't wait much longer. Jamaal hangs up and tells Fuzz that Karen isn't going to show. They walk into another part of the club. Jamaal spots Konner coming toward them and turns and runs the other way. Has Gary Cole ever played a serial killer? Because he totally could. He's creepy. Oh, I just looked it up and one of his first major roles was as Captain Jeffrey McDonald in Fatal Vision. I have got to see that now. Karen walks through the club and spots Konner. She follows him.

Jamaal and Fuzz run out a door that leads to the roof. Konner follows. Karen is not far behind him. Up on the roof, Konner has his gun trained on Jamaal and Fuzz. Jamaal begs him not to do this. Konner says that they're on a roof, and that if someone falls, no one will see it, so it could happen to anyone. Konner orders them to stand up on the wall. Fuzz says he doesn't want to, and Konner shoots him in the thigh. In the recaplet, I misidentified that as his shoulder. Sorry. It was dark. Fuzz falls to the ground. Jamaal tries to help him. Konner asks who killed O'Hara. Karen shows up, gun drawn, and tells Konner to drop his weapon. Konner stares at her. Karen says they are in her custody now. Konner isn't interested. Karen makes her way toward the fugitives while keeping her gun on Konner the whole time. Konner stares at her with his Manson Lamps and then turns his gun on Karen. She keeps her gun on him, and they have a standoff. Konner says he didn't want it to be like this. Karen says that if he kills the fugitives, he'll have to kill her too. Konner considers this for a while, and then pulls his gun back. He says he thinks Karen means that, as he lays his gun down on the ground. Tell him to kick it over to you, Karen! Karen keeps her gun on Konner, who says that they had better get a tourniquet on Fuzz's leg. Karen doesn't turn her head, but asks Jamaal if he has a belt. Jamaal does, and starts taking it off. Karen walks over and (no!) tucks her gun into her waistband. Okay, am I really supposed to believe that Karen would not only leave Konner's gun lying inches away from him, but also that she would put her own gun away, and take her eyes off Konner? No! She would have taken his gun and cuffed him, tossed Jamaal her cell phone and had him call 911, and then waited it out. Once the paramedics arrived, she could take Jamaal and Konner into custody. Ugh. Anyway, to the surprise of absolutely no one, when Karen looks up, Konner is gone. At least he didn't shoot all three of them before he left. Because he totally could have.
