Today we meet a new crop of interns, but I guess they decided adding 16 new doctors to the cast was too much, so each of our residents just gets one. (And yet I still can't remember any of their names.) Cristina and her new minion are working with Richard on Henry, the new Mr. Teddy, who needs to have a kidney removed. During the consultation, Richard learns of the little marriage of convenience that occurred, and he's livid about it, even though it's pointed out to him that it's not technically against any law. When Henry's surgery gets complicated, they realize Teddy is listed as his emergency contact, and so she is the one who they have to ask about doing more procedures once they are inside. Since she has no idea what it is that Henry would want, she just goes with Richard's recommendation. When Henry wakes up, he realizes that she's angry to have been surprised like that, but he explains how the rest of his family is dead or busy or bailed on him and so she's the only friend he's got there -- wife or not -- and she seems to forgive him.
In other new-relationship news, Bailey is hooking up with her hot nurse, who does sexy, inappropriate things like leaving her dirty notes in patient charts. Bailey seems both appalled and totally turned on by it and decides she's going to just have fun with it for now. Mere and Derek are back to being lovey-dovey after last week's fighting, and Meredith is obsessed with the fact that she can't get pregnant to the point where she takes 10 pregnancy tests over the course of the day just to be sure that there really is no bun in her oven.
Mark and Arizona are working together on a case, so Arizona uses the day to grill Mark about what she can do to get Callie back, and Mark thinks she needs to figure out what her faults are so that she can apologize. Arizona keeps coming up with ideas but finally asks Mark to just tell her what her problem is, since he seems to have something specific in mind. He informs her that when things get tough, she bails, so I guess we really are just going with the story that her and Callie's breakup was all Arizona's fault, and Callie was just a little bit cranky and not at all an equal partner in the great implosion that was their relationship. Arizona finds Callie at the end of the day to tell her that she knows she bails but she promises not to do it this time because she loves her, which is the perfect time for Callie to drop a (totally telegraphed throughout the entire hour) bombshell: she is pregnant with Mark's baby. Arizona manages to keep herself from bolting right out of the elevator when she hears the news, so we'll see how this goes.
Unsurprisingly, most of the residents aren't exactly nice to their interns, even though they learn that the Chief is looking for a new Chief Resident and that they're now being judged all the time. It turns out that Richard had the interns write evaluations of their residents at the end of their day and the only doctor who actually gets a good review is Alex, who spent the day being super-gracious and teaching his own student, because she's smoking hot. More important than a good review, he gets the ultimate prize of her, in his T-shirt, wandering into Meredith's kitchen for water at the end of the night. It's nice to know that in this crazy, turbulent world of ours, some things will never change, and Alex's ability to get any woman into his bed is one of those things.

Tonight we start off with some kicky disco-ish music to accompany Meredith's VO about fresh starts. Unfortunately, for her and Derek, there isn't a fresh start yet since they are gazing at a pregnancy test that says, "not pregnant." Meredith is pretty bummed and is sure it's not going to work, though Derek thinks they just need to keep trying. As they go back and forth on this, Mere's VO asks how different a new start can possibly be since you are still you?
Callie, meanwhile, is crying at the bathroom sink as she gets better to work, but it's one of those hysterical cries that's punctuated by laughter. Mark yells at her to get a move on, and when the two of them walk out to the hall Callie is unpleasantly surprised to see a big pile of moving boxes which Arizona is taking into their old apartment. Ever cheerful, Arizona declares that she bought out the subletters and she's moving back in. Callie is about as opposite as one can be from "pleased" as she reminds Arizona that they were Callie's subletters (I guess we're ignoring that Arizona had moved in there already and they had moved out together) and then tells Arizona that she's not playing games but really just doesn't want to see Arizona at all.
Callie then informs Arizona that she turned her life upside down for her but that Arizona walked away because Callie was cranky for a week, and says that this makes her untrustworthy and self-centered. The amazing thing is that everyone seems to truly be going with this version of the story. There has not been one voice of reason to point out that Callie was an incredibly whiny jerk who never truly supported her girlfriend's once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Yes, she agreed to move, but she never really committed to that or tried to make it work at all, and was at least as self-centered as Arizona was in the situation. I appear to be the only person who thinks this, though. Callie is sure that if she gives Arizona another chance she'll just be hurt again, so she doesn't want her back and yells, "Get your crap out of my apartment." Okay, maybe I'm not the only person who thinks this, since even Mark looks a little surprised at her reaction. After Callie storms off, Arizona tries to say that this is a good thing, because her being mad shows that she cares... right? She doesn't actually get an answer, though.
Mere and Cristina are at the hospital and it's like nothing happened at all as they babble about Mere's non-pregnancy and Cristina assures her that it's probably too early to get a positive test result and suggests that Mere should try a few tests to be sure. She then turns the subject to herself and declares that she did four surgeries yesterday and is doing three more today, which makes her unstoppable. I'm glad to see that once she shook the PTSD, she shook it 110%, wow. They're joined by Jackson, Alex, and April since they were all paged to meet the first year med students (who I mistakenly thought were the new interns when I watched this the first time, so my apologies for the rather inaccurate detail in the recaplet) who are there to observe for the day. None of them have any respect for the students even though Richard gives a nice speech about how they are the interns and residents of tomorrow.
Richard then assigns each of them a student who is going to shadow them for the day. Cristina is totally unexcited to get a guy named Fred, Meredith's student is named Kira, April gets Hudson, and then Lexie calls forward a super hot girl named Laurel. Both Alex and Avery are dying to get her but Alex wins that lottery and Avery gets a dude named Edward, who wants to shake his hand and be friends but Avery isn't interested. Richard tells Cristina that she's going to be on his service so that he can monitor her progress, and she's sure he'll be pleased. He then loudly mentions that he's picking the new Chief Resident in a few months and none of our residents are happy to realize he's been watching and evaluating them for the position since their first days at the hospital. None of them have exactly been on their best behavior this whole time.
The first stop Meredith makes is the bathroom, and when she gets out she tells Kira that they will be working with Derek, who happens to be both her husband and a surgical genius. Kira is relieved and somewhat tactlessly tells Meredith she's glad to realize Meredith isn't one of those doctors just obsessed with her job and cold and dead inside. Mere already wasn't excited to have a med student following her but now is even less amused by the whole exercise.
On their way to see Henry, Fred goes over the chart and Cristina basically mocks him for it before informing that as a med student, he should be seen but not heard. They're joined by Richard and Bailey, and the group heads in to meet Henry. When Bailey introduces herself, Henry says he already feels like he knows her since Eli told him all about her, and Bailey loses her cool for just a moment at the idea, since she had no idea Eli was even on the case. He smarms that he didn't tell Henry everything, and I have to say that he's hot and awesome, but something about him also screams "trouble." We'll have to see how this all plays out.
Richard is confused at what is happening because apparently he was born yesterday, but Bailey's able to brush it off and bring the focus back around to their patient. Henry asks who Fred is and Cristina brushes him off, assuring him that Fred is "nobody." Richard isn't impressed, and neither is Fred. Cristina answers that she brought him up to speed on the case but as we all know that's just because he read the chart himself. Richard then explains that Henry previously was denied this surgery because he didn't have insurance, and Henry jumps in and explains that he got married and therefore is now insured. Richard naturally assumes that Henry's girlfriend said yes but we all know that's not the case and of course Teddy conveniently walks in at that moment to give Henry some paperwork. After she leaves, Henry tells them that she is his wife, and the jaws of all of the Seattle Grace regulars drop simultaneously.
Callie goes out to meet the ambulance and when Owen says her name by way of greeting, she practically bites his head off. Avery and Edward walk out and Avery starts to say hello but Owen warns him off of that for his own sake. The patient that arrives is a 30-something named Brady who has crush injuries after being trampled by horses. Another man, Kyle, wearing a tuxedo jacket and a kilt, climbs out of the ambulance and begs the doctors not to let Brady die on their wedding day. Apparently they were signing their domestic partnership papers, and they had a horse drawn carriage and bagpipers there to honor Brady's Scottish heritage. Unfortunately, the bagpipes spooked the horses and they ran right over Brady. Kyle is in a totally freaked-out frenzy and keeps apologizing, while Brady just moans about getting run over. Avery and Callie shove Edward out of the way and Callie tries to get Kyle to leave so she can do her work but Kyle is adamant that he has a right to stay there. Finally, fed up with all the people and with her fuse extra-short, Callie yells at everyone to get out.
Richard tracks down Teddy so that he can tell her just how insane he thinks her marriage is, and how it's also insurance fraud. Lexie is there to explain to him (and honestly, to all of the viewing audience because I thought it was fraud and know plenty of others did too) that it's not actually considered fraud; it's just something that is frowned upon. When he calls it unethical, Lexie pipes up again to say that the medical community is split on that issue because is it more unethical to deny care to someone or to marry them so that they can have that care? That's actually a rather interesting question, and I'm glad for Lexie's little contribution to this scene to explain all of it. Richard isn't so glad and wants her to go away, but she's on Teddy's service for the day. Richard yells at Teddy that you're supposed to marry someone you love and after Teddy does a horrible job trying to convince him that she does love Henry and finally points out that either way, it's done and he has insurance, Richard storms away. Lexie tells Teddy that for what it's worth, she thinks what Teddy did was awesome. Teddy seems to be grateful for the support but not terribly moved by being backed up by a resident.
Conveniently, Arizona and Mark are on a case together and as they walk to meet their patient, Arizona tells him she understands that Callie has a hangup about Arizona being perfect and everything coming easy to her, so now that she's made a mistake she intends to pound the crap out of Arizona for it. Writers, why do you try so hard to make me dislike Arizona? Who on earth even says all that with a straight face? I didn't think it would be Arizona until right now. Mark laughs and asks her if she really thinks she's perfect, and Arizona denies it, pointing out she's a competitive workaholic who smokes when she's stressed. Mark thinks these aren't true faults for which she's sorry, but thank goodness they are working together so that the two can figure out what's really wrong with her. Lord knows it's not just that she and her girlfriend had a big fight like billions of couples before them where both parties could have been more understanding of each other.
Alex, Laurel, April and Hudson are trailing behind and Laurel asks Alex if he was really the guy on Seattle Med who made a trachea. Alex tries to act humble but it's not really his forte, and the two flirt away about regenerative medicine while April makes a disgusted fact. She finally admonishes Alex that he is Laurel's teacher, but Alex smarms back that it's only for one day.
Their patient is a teenage girl named Sarah who was born without cheekbones. This means she's extra vulnerable to eye injuries and so the would-be athlete has never been allowed to play sports, but she's cheerful enough and obviously has learned how to cope with her situation. At one point during the introduction Alex actually has April move so that Laurel can see better, much to April's disgust. Arizona explains that they're going to use pieces of her skull to create cheekbones for her. Laurel is excited and asks if she can try out for volleyball in a couple of months, but she's greeted with awkward adult silence that means no way.
Teddy runs into Henry's room to give him some paperwork and announce that he's officially now insured. He graciously offers her a fruit cup as thanks and she decides to sit down and try it -- a move she regrets once she actually tastes it. It's a cute moment to add to the pile of cute moments that have already transpired between these two. She then wishes him good luck with his surgery and heads out.
When Mark, Arizona, and their entourage leave Sarah's room Mark tells Arizona that doing the skull surgery is going to add a year to her healing time, and he'd rather try a stem cell cadaver bone graft. Arizona thinks it's too experimental to try, especially on someone as young as Sarah, and basically shuts down Mark when he tries to argue the point.
Brady is having his scan and Meredith comes out to tell Avery, Edward and Kira what's going on, which is something something something we know is bad since her tone is so concerned. Edward asks what that means and she explains for the common folk that one joint in his neck was knocked out of place, which means he's got a broken back. Kira seemed not to be listening so much as ogling Derek and tells Meredith she thinks she hit the jackpot with that one. Meredith is not charmed by this as it seems Kira thinks she would be, but Kira doesn't seem to notice that.
Inside, Callie, Derek and Owen look at the scans and lament what a sucky wedding day this turned out to be for poor Brady. Edward managed to shuffle into the doorway and quips that if you want to piss of God, just tell him your plans, and when Avery realizes that his charge got in there he yells at him to get out. By the way, Edward, I think that's supposed to make God laugh, not make Him angry. He doesn't seem like the brightest bulb, but seems cheerful enough and very interested in learning, and I feel a little sorry for him getting saddled with cranky Avery.
It's a scantastic morning as Richard, Bailey, Cristina and Fred are looking at Henry's films, but Fred has no idea what's what and Cristina has very little patience for him. Richard finally comes to his rescue and explains how the image is reversed, and pointedly adds that he's sure Cristina can remember her own first time trying to look at images like these. He then muses that empathy is also a good quality for Chief Resident. Cristina slumps and then grudgingly tries to pretend she's empathetic after all and explains what they are looking at. Her personality is certainly back as if there was no PTSD for 11 episodes to this one whatsoever. What Fred realizes once he learns what's what is that a tumor is eating Henry's kidney, and Richard sadly says he's going to have to remove the surrounded organ.
Callie goes to explain to a still-panicky Kyle what's up and that they are going to have to first snap Brady's neck back into place. Avery tells Kyle that he probably doesn't want to be there for that but Kyle's incredibly up in arms and takes that to be an attack on his rights. Even Brady tries to calm him down but Kyle insists on staying and Callie, in her stormy mood, decides to just go with it and quietly says that this will be good, and Kyle should just hold Brady's hand. She then counts down before awfully wrenching Brady's neck back into place, and Brady screams and squeezes Kyle's hand so hard that it could possibly be broken. But inflicting pain is just what Callie needed to momentarily forget her own (fairly obvious) troubles, and she looks incredibly satisfied with herself.
Cristina is walking Henry back to his room post-scan and Henry tries to get the results out of her, but she maintains that not everything is back yet. Henry, however, is not a surgery novice and knows they know what's up. He also notices that Fred is a sweaty, nervous mess and so he jumps on that, trying to get the newbie to spill the beans. It works admirably since Fred doesn't obey Cristina's order to stop but just babbles and finally blurts out that his uncle is just fine after having a kidney removed. I don't know what Henry was expecting but it certainly wasn't that he's going to lose an entire organ, and he starts to freak out. Cristina finally gets Fred to shut up but the damage has been done, and when Henry asks if it's really true they engage in a tense staring contest.
After the commercial break Richard is in there telling him the official bad news, and no one spills that he actually already knew. Bailey assures him that it's the best option but before he agrees, Henry wants to know what Teddy thinks. Cristina chips in that this isn't Teddy's specialty but Henry points out that he trusts her after she stuck her neck (and symbolic fourth finger) out for him and so he'd feel better if she agreed this is best. Richard is troubled that this fake marriage is already causing problems and he's not really hiding that from anyone.
Arizona responds to a page and walks into an ambush presentation prepared by Mark and the motley crew of residents and medical students. They immediately begin pointing out the pros and cons of using skull bone versus cadaver bone, but Arizona cuts them off and orders the lights turned back on. She claims to know all about what the research says but Mark has Hudson come over and turns the poor guy around so that he can draw on his cute med student skull and illustrate his argument. Arizona isn't impressed and just holds firm that the procedure is too experimental and they're going with the skull bone surgery as planned. In retaliation, Mark tells her that she can add "crappy listener" to her list of faults. She's pretty upset at the charge but it doesn't change her mind.
Richard goes and finds Teddy to get her opinion and only stokes his own fire of rage by calling her "Mrs. Burton," to which of course she doesn't respond until he clarifies that he's looking for Mrs. Henry Burton. Bailey's less troubled by all of this than Richard and just watches, amused, as the conversation unfolds. It sounds like Richard is bent out of shape that his judgment is being questioned, but Teddy tries to soothe him by looking at the scans and telling him she agrees with his recommendation. He leaves, but comes back for a moment to yell one more time that this is an inappropriate relationship. Teddy counters by pointing out (quite rightly) that this hospital is awash in inappropriate relationships and as she ticks them all off, Eli walks by and adds that Dr. Bailey is dating a nurse. Bailey screeches at them to ignore him, thereby of course proving that she IS dating a nurse, but they are all so caught up in their own drama that they don't seem to really notice.
It's lunchtime, and most of the gang has managed to ditch their students for the time being. Mere complains about repeatedly peeing on a stick and Cristina points out that's going to be nothing to actually raising a "poo-covered" baby. Meredith wonders why her baby is going to be covered in poo but mercifully they are interrupted by the arrival of Lexie, Avery and April. They look over and see Alex holding a banana on which he's teaching Laurel how to do sutures -- and it's not obvious or suggestive AT ALL. Avery's just green with envy that Alex got the hot girl and is even more distressed when he realizes she's wearing a thong... since it's hanging out of the back of her pants, much to the amusement of the women. They knock all of the students for being boy crazy, oblivious, and slutty and somehow don't see the pot/kettleness of their arguments. But Lexie does realize that they all sound really, really old. Oh, sister, I've been there. Wait until you're declining plans so that you can stay home and gather all of your tax paperwork in anticipation of meeting with your CPA. Sigh.
Arizona seems to have taken the "bad listener" comment to heart, so she walks up to Callie to fess up to it and declares herself ready to listen. But she doesn't really want to hear what Callie has to say, which is once again to get all of her crap out of the apartment.
The gang has finished up phase one of Brady's surgery and Callie comes in to take over for phase two. Meredith asks Kira if she wants to see his sutures but finds Kara texting. In the OR. During a SURGERY. And the sad thing is that from what I've seen of kids today, this kind of thing isn't terribly unusual. Yes, I realize that I'm only adding to the list of things that make me sound very, very old. Kids, get off my lawn! Kira asks if she can send her boyfriend a picture and is met with a chorus of nos. A bunch of them then gather to help move him onto the new bed that Callie wheeled in, but when Edward tries to help Avery once again shoos him away. Once they move him, the shit hits the fan and alarms start to blare while his stats all start dropping. The docs all spring to action trying to figure out what could be wrong but it's actually Edward who calls out an idea. Avery yells at him to get out of the OR but Owen actually listens and treats him for whatever bad thing Edward guessed was happening, and all of Brady's vitals then stabilize and the alarms shut off. The attendings are all impressed and Edward modestly tries to brush it off, saying it's something they had just learned in class so it was fresh in his mind. But Owen asks his name and congratulates him on the save, while Avery pouts like a child that his student actually got some recognition.
It seems to have finally sunk in to Arizona that she really, truly hasn't been listening to people, so she goes back to Mark, swallows her pride, and asks him to tell her more about the cadaver bone surgery. Mark teases her about finally listening but she's not in the mood and she snaps that she gets that she's a stuck up bitch that Callie wants nothing to do with, so just shut up and tell her about the surgery. I still think it's unfair, but this particular hour she has been pointedly not listening to people so fine. She's Learned A Lesson.
Of course, this means that Mark's idea really was the better one and so she goes to present the idea to Sarah and her parents. They're a bit hesitant because it's experimental but Sarah totally wants it if it means she might be able to play sports. She finally argues for it by pointing out to her parents that if she's not allowed to be the tomboy she is at heart, she could be prone to teen depression, eating disorders, drugs, and similar horrors. Touching music has started up so we know we're moved by this speech. And her parents are moved too -- her mom declares she's too smart for her own good, and Sarah points out this is because all she's able to do sans cheekbones is read, and she pleads with them to agree to the surgery. Arizona is touched by all of the Truth and Feelings in the room, and looks over to Mark.
Richard observes Cristina, who is totally back on her game, and compliments her work. She decides to take the moment to prove she's a good teacher and asks Fred if he wants to observe but when he steps up and sees the tumor, she realizes he's about to pass out. Richard calmly calls for people to catch him and they do, and it's all rather hilariously handled like clockwork. She apologizes but Richard doesn't mind since it makes him sentimental about his own days as a student, and he pointedly says that it reminds him where he started and teaches humility, which is good for a Chief Resident. Bailey adds that it's one of her own best qualities, and it's a testament to everyone in the room that they manage to keep a straight face at the remark. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking it -- Bailey kicks all kinds of ass -- but humility might not be what I call her greatest quality.) Richard also can't help but add that it's also funny when they fall down. But the levity comes to a stop when Cristina calls his attention to something in Henry's innards, using her Bad News voice.
Callie is done with her surgery and she finds Kyle in the waiting room and assures him that Brady is fine, though his recovery will be slow and painful. Kyle is totally relieved that he's okay but also sad because this was supposed to be their perfect day. He then sits down to give the week's heartwrenching speech, in which he explains that Seattle doesn't allow gay marriage, only domestic partnerships, even though Kyle fought mightily to change the law. Finally, he was tired of waiting to get married but he still wanted to make this a big day like everyone else gets, rather than just a day spent in line at city hall filing papers. A very emotional Callie tears up as he goes on to say that Brady is the best thing that ever happened to him, and a close-up shot of her face tells us that she's really understanding and connecting with him and his story. Kyle is still devastated that when he tried to make the day special he wound up almost killing his beloved, but Callie assures him that things don't go the way you want them to, ever. I wonder what on earth she could mean? Something to do with her both sobbing and laughing in the bathroom that morning? Something that would make her extra emotional and edgy? Something that would relate to how her sobbing seemed to be tied to the scene with Meredith reading her negative pregnancy test? It's all so vague, I just can't possibly imagine.
Teddy reports to the OR where they are working on Teddy and is brought up to speed that Cristina found a cyst on his pancreas that's in danger of rupturing. This means they have to remove a large part of his pancreas, which will have the incredibly unfortunate side effect of making him a diabetic. As this wasn't something they discussed with him, they need to ask his wife, who also happens to be listed as his emergency contact, if they think that's something they could live with. When Teddy admits she doesn't know, Richard tells her he hates to put her on the spot, but the sarcasm dripping from his voice tells us it's actually the totally opposite and he's glad to be able to stick it to her for what he considers to be such an irresponsible decision. He asks her if she thinks he has the support system to manage diabetes, and when she admits she doesn't know he asks if there is anyone else they can call. Unfortunately, she doesn't know that either. By this point she is well and truly shamed, but Richard can't let it go and asks incredulously if she really signed a marriage contract without finding out answers to some basic life-or-death questions. Bailey and the others all look away, embarrassed for Teddy, and finally Richard asks icily if he has her permission to act as he sees fit. She gives it and he dismisses her; she leaves with tears in her eyes, all red with shame and maybe a dash of anger too.
That night Eli comes up to Bailey and asks flirtily if she got his note. She chastises him but is obviously completely charmed and when he asks what she thinks, she tells him he's dirty. She's not wrong -- he asks if she wants to show him one of the on-call rooms where the doctors are always having sex. He certainly doesn't beat around the bush, this one. After they kiss and he leaves, she giggles like a schoolgirl and fans herself to try and regain a bit of self control.
Fred is sitting outside on a bench in the dark, like all good, tortured Seattle Grace doctors. Cristina walks out and sees him there, and though she looks like she wants to just walk by she takes some pity and heads toward him. This guy doesn't know it but he's already a pro at all of the Seattle Grace customs -- without prompting, he launches right in to his sad tale of woe that has brought him to the bench. In this case, it's that he has a Ph.D. already and then after that he went to med school, where he is #1 in his class. He's telling her all this because he wants to assure her he's not an idiot even though he passed out during surgery. She looks unmoved so he gives up, but she finally tells him that if he wants to not be an idiot he needs to back his resident up, no matter what, and also needs to learn to not give away information he's not allowed to give to a patient. She also advises that when he's in the OR and about to faint, he should stop thinking about how that's a human body on the table in front of him. I know that's the trick but personally I still wouldn't be able to pull this off. Of course, that might be one reason I'm sitting here writing a recap rather than slogging through medical school. He's near tears and admits that now he feels like an ass, and he tells her to disregard what he said in his evaluation. She's confused and he admits that they all had to fill out evaluations on their doctors, and when she pressures him he admits that he might have used the word "heartless" to describe her. That causes all of her helpfulness to dry right up, and she walks back inside as he tries to say something else.
After his surgery, Teddy is watching Henry from the hallway when Bailey walks up and joins her. Teddy thinks she's about to get a lecture about how Richard is right about everything, but it's obvious the thought hadn't even occurred to Bailey. Instead, she wants to talk about her sexy fling with the murse. She claims she's not dating him and would never bring him home or introduce him to her son, but she grins and admits she's having fun. She then tells Teddy that he left a dirty note in a chart, and as Teddy sinks her head into her hands Bailey frets about what would have happened if someone other than her had found it. But even so, she is having fun and has decided that she's going to just go with it. It's not advice that really helps Teddy, but seeing flustered schoolgirl Bailey does cheer her up, and she looks back at her husband.
As Alex teaches Laurel about cadaver bones he drills a hole into one and I swear, because the bone matched the color of his gloves, I thought he was drilling a hole into his own finger and almost fainted. Fortunately it was just bone, and he hands it to Laurel to see, which is the last straw for poor April. Though Alex claims he is teaching (and laying some groundwork for later extracurriculars, but he doesn't say that part) April essentially tells on him and Mark backs her up and tells Alex that the students are only allowed to observe.
Over at the operating table, Mark and Arizona are still discussing her faults and Arizona guesses at what could be making Callie mad, such as her being passive aggressive and resenting obligation. She finally resorts to begging and Mark has to remind her that he'd side with Callie in a divorce (which is interesting because it also means he doesn't really believe this is the end for the two ladies.) Let it be noted that this is one of those scenes I wound up recapping by sound alone since the two of them are digging around in Sarah's face under her skin as they are talking and I nearly pulled a Fred when I saw it. Arizona says she knows that he and Callie are friends and likens their own relationship to siblings, but assures him he's like family. This just makes him add "patronizing" to her list.
When Henry comes to, Teddy is sitting on the bed with a cup of ice water for him. She explains about the cyst and the pancreas and then adds that she was consulted since she was his emergency contact, which it seems she didn't know until she was called to the floor by Richard. Henry calmly asks what she decided, and she explains it and tells him he might now be diabetic for the rest of his life, which will be a big adjustment. He jokes that he's already a breeding ground for tumors, so he knows about big adjustments. She tells him sincerely that she's sorry but he tells her he knows she's also mad, and sad music starts up so we know that she agrees.
She reminds him that their deal was just about paperwork, and not life and death decision. In reply, he tells her about his family -- his parents died a few years earlier, his broke sister lives in Prague, and he doesn't like to bring up his problems with her since he knows they are exhausting. His best friend married a woman who sounds like a complete bitch since she also found his problems exhausting and seems to have broken them up. Since he also had to keep changing jobs because of the insurance he didn't have a lot of friends, but now considers her one. He claims he's not telling any of this to make her feel sorry for them and while I sort of believe it, it's hard to hear his tale of woe and not feel the tiniest bit manipulated, intentional or not. Thank goodness she can't actually hear the tragic music in the background too, or that would really push it over the edge. Because he considers her a friend, he put her down as his emergency contact, not because she is technically his wife. Still, don't you let your friends know when you're doing something like that? She's melted, though, and she takes his hand and they sit and talk about how it's going to suck to be diabetic.
When Brady wakes up Kyle and Callie are both there to see how he's doing. Kyle immediately starts to apologize again and Brady tells him he knows that he just wanted it to be special. He then manages to quiet Kyle so that he can say something before he falls asleep again, which is that he forgives him. He tells Kyle to stop apologizing and makes him promise not to make it up to him because he will probably kill him. Kyle laughs and kisses his hand, and Brady falls back to sleep. After watching this show of true love and forgiveness, Callie mulls it all over and walks out of the room.
She hands the chart over to Mere so that she can do the post-op assessment and then leaves. Once she's gone, Kira asks Meredith how long it takes, and Mere gets completely fed up and tells her to just go home. Kira seems surprised and assures Mere that it's fine but Mere points out that she's obviously not interested in learning since she spent all of a really rare surgery just looking at her phone, and any questions she asked were just about Derek, not about medicine. Kira isn't going to take this lying down and defends that Mere was sneaking off to the bathroom all day to take pregnancy tests (she saw one in her locker) and so she figured asking about her husband was the way to get on her good side.
Amazingly, Mere looks like she realizes she screwed up somehow. How is that possible?? Mere may have been taking tests but she was still in with patients and in surgery, at one point making a point of trying to include Kira. She might not be the best teacher, but I refuse to believe that we're supposed to think she was shitty and self-centered all day when her student was TEXTING DURING SURGERY. WHO DOES THAT? Kira is the student, and Kira should have been making an effort to learn and not just talk with her boyfriend every second. I firmly maintain that she would have had ample chances to learn if she had done that. Are this show and I having some sort of communication breakdown? Because I have been getting really confused about whose side we are supposed to take and what we are supposed to think about people's actions since I seem to disagree with a lot of it these days.
Mere then joins the other residents in the locker room and they all fret about the evaluations, though Mere tries to brush it off and says no one will ever actually read them. Cue Richard, who walks in and reads choice pieces about each doc: Yang had no patience nor compassion, April was unwilling to delegate, Avery put his own learning before Edwards, and Mere seemed to have a lot going on personally. Seriously, I find that last one really rich. He finishes up by saying the only one who actually taught anything was Karev, which everyone else thinks is a joke. Richard declares that the rest of them failed big-time, and Alex just cackles at them all before leaving.
Sarah, her face bruised but now sporting cheekbones, is in with her parents hugging a volleyball that they brought for her. It's sweet, and Arizona is all smiles about it when she turns to Mark and admits that she doesn't know her worst faults because she doesn't like to think about them, so will he just please tell her what she needs to fess up to in order to get another chance from Callie. Mark tells her bluntly but not unkindly that when things get bad she bails. I've done enough ranting this hour, right? Let's just say that I refuse to believe what happened between Arizona and Callie was all Arizona's fault and both ladies could stand to take responsibility for that relationship meltdown.
April and Jackson get home and grab beers while they gripe about their evaluations. They're interrupted when Laurel walks in wearing just a t-shirt and a look of surprise to find the doctors in the kitchen when she just wanted a drink of water. Avery talks to her bare legs and tells them where they glasses are, and when she reaches up to get them he moves his wistful gaze up to her ass until April smacks him for it. Poor dude, losing out to Karev both at work and home.
Cristina is reading and eating cereal out of the box when Owen gets home and asks how she did today. In what was actually a nice subtle nod to the fact that she's still recovering, she snarks that she made a student screw her over but then genuinely tells him that she did pretty well. She then offers him some cereal for dinner, and they snuggle. Aw, I missed these two and this warms my heart.
Upstairs, Meredith tells Derek that she took ten tests that day, and all turned out negative. They banter about it but she's obviously seriously bummed and Derek tries to tell her that it can take time to get pregnant. She's not really receptive to that since some people (ahem) do it on the first try. What's really troubling her is that she spent all day peeing on sticks rather than teaching her student so she got her butt kicked in the Chief Resident race and also failed at both being a teacher and making a baby. Derek won't let her wallow, though, and just tells her practice makes perfect before he starts kissing her to get down to said practice.
Callie gets in the elevator to go home and Arizona races in behind her before the doors close and before Callie can really realize what's happening. Arizona then declares without preamble, "I bail." She then supposes that maybe it's because she was an Army brat who moved all the time (She's technically a Marine brat, but who's counting?) that she never learned to commit but she's here now and going to fight to make sure Callie knows she is committed. She also reminds Callie that both of them aren't perfect and if they are talking faults, Callie is unable to forgive. Oh my goodness, the shock! Callie was just dealing with a patient and learned a lesson about forgiveness! How uncanny! Arizona says that Callie will have to forgive her and that it might as well be now since she knows they love each other and she just wants one more chance. Mere starts up her voiceover, which amounts to how it's never actually easier to start over. Here to illustrate that is Callie, who decides it's time to drop her bomb. After she gets Arizona to agree that she really wants to start over with a clean slate, she announces that today she found out she's pregnant with Mark's baby. The elevator doors open as Callie asks, "How about now?" and then they close with neither of the women moving an inch. I weirdly don't hate this turn of events, but do wish there hadn't been such obvious hints dropped during the hour and that it had been a bit more of a shocking surprise. But beggars can't be choosers, and if we can at least move on to a different story than, "Callie is perfect and Arizona is the only one at fault," I'll totally take it.
