Lorelai: Mother to Rory. Daughter to Emily. Had Rory when she was in high school. Didn't marry Christopher, Rory's father, because they were too young. She had distanced herself from her rich parents to raise Rory but is now back in their lives as they are helping to pay for Rory's education at Chilton.
Rory: Daughter to Lorelai. Granddaughter to Emily and Grampa. Goes to Chilton, a fancy private school, but she doesn't get along with her classmates. She wants to go to Harvard.
Lane: Rory's best friend. She still goes to public school. Has strict Korean parents and does things they wouldn't approve of when she's with Rory.
CuteDean: Real name: Dean. Rory's first boyfriend. He goes to school with Lane. We all love him. Then Season Two came along and they almost wrote him out of the show. Now in Season Three you better not blink or you'll miss him. We miss CuteDean 1.0
Luke: Runs the diner in Stars Hollow. Has a love-hate relationship with Lorelai, but feeds her junk food anyway. He's the town grump with a heart of gold. In earlier episodes was called "Mr. Nutrition."
Mustang Max: Real name: Max Medina. Rory's English teacher at Chilton. He was going to marry Lorelai, but then she left him.
Miss Patty: Runs the dance studio in Stars Hollow. She's the biggest character in the town, and gets away with things. Rumored that she's done just about everything on Broadway. She's the town's local celebrity.
Sookie: The chef at Lorelai's Inn. She's fun and bubbly and likes to cook. Probably Lorelai's closest friend. Married produce supplier Jackson at the end of Season Two.
Michel: Pronounced "Mee-shell." French. The front desk manager at the Independence Inn. He's apathetic and sarcastic and very funny. In charge of witty banter with Lorelai at the front desk.
Drella: The harp player at the Independence Inn. Doesn't take orders well. Missing since Season One.
Jackson: The produce supplier for Independence Inn. Married to Sookie. Serves as whipping boy for Sookie and Lorelai.
Paris: Rory's semi-nemesis. The best student at Chilton, she feels threatened by Rory's smarts. In Season Two she loved Ryan Philllipppe and was madly jealous that he showed interest in Rory. Now that he's gone, Paris just obsesses about random things every week.
Ryan Philllipppe: Real name: Tristan. He's the most popular boy at Chilton, and is sly and smarmy. He likes to tease Rory because he has a crush on her. Rory isn't interested in him. Missing since Season Two, when Chad Michael Murray, the actor who played him, starred in several episodes of Dawson's Creek.
Emily: Lorelai's mother. Rich, white, and occasionally rude. Loves Rory and is starting to heal her relationship with Lorelai.
Grampa: Real name: Richard. Married to Emily. Rich businessman. Has a bond with Rory.
Jess: Created in Season Two, Jess is Luke's nephew who now lives with him over the diner. Rumored to work at the diner, but we never see Jess actually work. He loves Rory very much, but she won't break up with her boyfriend for him, but will skip school to see him and kiss him at other peoples' weddings. Rory has been leading Jess on for almost two full seasons.
Sherri: Christopher's fiancée and soon-to-be mother of his second child, a girl named Gigi. Christopher loves Lorelai, but is gonna marry someone else and be a better daddy to someone else anyway.
