We open in the hospital. Treat gets ready to operate on Rose as Natalie Merchant's "Beloved Wife" plays in the...foreground? Good enough. Treat looks at Rose, knocked out on the table, for a minute before he gets started. Fade to Patch, Bright, and Amy in the waiting room. Patch catches Bright's eye, and Bright gives his dad a wistful little smile. Also, adorable. Cut back briefly to the operating room, where Treat tells the tumor it's about to have a very bad day. Amy asks Patch if he needs anything; he answers, "Just a moment alone," and gets up. Patch walks dazedly through the busy hospital halls and finally slams into a bathroom for some peace. The song picks up here and we see Patch from an overhead angle. He picks a stall and sits down, opening the changing table to form a little makeshift altar. "If you don't mind, Lord...a word," he begins. "I know you're bottomless and infinite and the problems of individual souls are quite beyond your purview, but...I don't ask for favors, only the strength to do right, or the wisdom to make good choices. I never ask you for anything for myself. Well, I am today." We cut to Treat in surgery, and Patch pleads for God to guide his hands, to guide whatever cells in Rose's body have to fight or die for her to heal. "I'm asking you, God. Fix this. Make her better. I offer you no promises, no trades, bartering my years for hers...I'm just asking. Cast stones at me for my impudence; cast a boulder, I don't care. You fix this." The song picks up again, this time on the line about being alone without one's beloved wife, and I'm having a hard time thinking of a way to describe how powerful it is. You'll just have to trust me, man. Natalie keeps singing as we pull away from Patch, and...credits.
We come back to Nina and Dimples surrounded by boxes. Sam is jumping wildly on the couch, an act which would have called for a slapdown in my day. Sam asks if he can sleep on top of Dimples's gigantic TV. Nina says she doesn't remember seeing the TV at his old place. Dimples explains that he finally had his L.A. stuff shipped to Everwood, specifically, to Nina's house. Nina's like, "This, plus the stuff from your house here, which hasn't even arrived yet? Grrreat." Dimples tells her that anything she doesn't like? Gone. Except the blender, with which he will make her the world's best margaritas. Nina assures him that his stuff is a billion times nicer than hers, which means that everything of his stays. "If I lose my Cuisinart from 1982, well...so be it." Hee. Nina proposes ice cream for everyone, but Dimples commands her to go upstairs and take a bath, and by the time she comes down, there will be at least five feet of walking space in her living room. Aw. Dimples turns to Sam, who has wrapped a lambskin rug around himself like a shawl. "You like that rug, do you?" Sam says he does, and he's naming him Franz. Dimples considers this, and declares it a good name.
Meanwhile, Nina is upstairs in the bathroom. She glances over at a box filled with Dimples's toiletries, and idly picks up a medicine bottle. The look on her face tells us that it ain't filled with aspirin.
