Daniel in the Lion's Den

Si dismisses McClane as "a centrist boob." That sounds like a medical condition, the mammary equivalent of being a cyclops. Brooke chips in that McClane's heir apparent is Danny Minton, a name that piques Nikki's interest immediately. Other editors list his many attributes -- labor organizer, activist, Taurus with a penchant for diamonds -- while Nikki and Hildy exchange giggly, girly looks, because Danny is like soooo hot and wants Nikki to wear his letter jacket. Brooke explains that Minton is the former fisherman who negotiated the Fulton Fish Market price-fixing "thing" with the mob. After that little sentence, no one at the meeting is awake enough to clarify just what the "thing" was. Quoting the old story's headline, Si says, "'Cod peace.' He's a twit," although Nikki hears, "His codpiece...I'm atwitter," and fans herself with a stack of papers while looking moderately horny.

Nikki and Hildy grab a coffee together. Hildy wants to know if Nikki is going to the Bridge Café for a Danny Minton shindig, but Nikki says she's not bothering. "Why? Because he hasn't called?" Hildy asks. Nikki confesses that if she shows up, it'll look desperate, like she's chasing a guy who hasn't even picked up the phone to call her. Hildy convinces her that it's kosher for media figures to appear at press events, and that it's a good excuse to doll herself up and regale Minton with what he's missing. Wallace "Get" Benton appears and chirps that it's kismet, but Beekman screeches for an audience with him so Wallace has to leave. Nikki rolls her eyes at his back, then resolves to chase desperately the guy who hasn't picked up the phone to call her.

Wallace enters Si's spacious office, only to find his boss lying half-naked on his stomach. Startled, Benton does a double take -- could it be Tuesday already? But then a buxom blonde appears to massage Si's back, and Wallace's trouser-peril is no more. "I had a disturbing telephone call," Si says. "It seems Minton has considerable political potential." Si doesn't want a Democrat in office, and asks Wallace to find the skeletons in Minton's closet. Wallace posits that perhaps Minton is clean. "Come on, you're telling me there's a politician who doesn't have an intern with a blue dress festooned with spunk?" Si grins. He asks Benton to find the stained blue dress, and as Benton is about to shout out that Brooke was wearing it last week and that the Beekman masseuse might have it on an hour from now, Si specifies that the soiled cloth had better be hanging in Minton's closet. Which could mean it belongs to Nikki. And now, a reading from the Tao of Si: "If he was a Republican candidate, you'd all be bounding up and down with glee like a bunch of monks in a whorehouse." Amen. Wallace says Nikki will escort him to the soirée in Minton's honor, at which he'll make up his own mind about the man. Si grunts, as he's wont to do.
