Freak Nation

The show opens with a little recap of the show's premise, for those of you joining in for the first time because you heard James Cameron was directing and you wanted to see just how craptastic it would be. Let me state up front that I really hate James Cameron and everything he stands for, so he won't be getting many props from me. Anyway, Max sits on the Space Needle and mopes as we hear a voice-over explaining that she was created in a lab to be the perfect soldier, and then she busted out with some of her brothers and sisters. Then, nine months ago, she set Manticore on fire and let all of the inhabitants out into the world. The government's been trying to catch them, and the public is afraid of them. Max and Logan can't be together due to a virus. Logan is helping her figure out what White, who is ostensibly working for the government, is up to with his breeding cult stuff. All caught up? Let's move on.

It's Seattle, Washington in the year 2021. A reporter does a stand-up in front of Terminal City. Behind her, some Seattle residents are burning an X and throwing things at the fence. The reporter explains that a bunch of transgenics are holed up inside Terminal City, which was home to "a massive toxic spill" ten years ago. The reporter goes on to say that it's a felony to go inside the fence surrounding Terminal City, and the locals have been setting up flaming Xs "as a warning to the transgenics inside." A warning about what? If you come outside, we will burn you like an X? That warning seems a little vague. The locals are also throwing cans at the fence. Ooh, scary.

Max drives up on her motorcycle. James Cameron does everything he can to make Jessica Alba look sexy. He really is a perv, isn't he? Max stops outside the fence and revs the engine, then makes a smart remark. She pops a wheelie and drives through the flaming X. It would have been funny if her bike just stopped and she burned up. Okay, only funny to me, probably. Max flies up a makeshift ramp and over the fence.

Max rides her bike into Terminal City. She takes off her sunglasses, although I have to wonder why she was wearing sunglasses at night outside anyway. What is she, Corey Hart? She meets up with Mole (formerly The Leader) and hands over the money that she got from the drug dealer. Mole says it's good that they got the money because so many new people are arriving, and starts running down the list of all the supplies they'll need. Max is staring at all of the new arrivals like she's never seen a transgenic before. Max finds Runty and Dix watching television. The reporter we saw earlier is interviewing a local. Hey, did you know that the locals hate the transgenics? If not, you'll be reminded many times in this episode. When the interview ends, Max asks Joshua what he's doing. Joshua says that he's working on a flag for their little community. Runty and Dix joke about how they'll need the flag when they're marching in parades and such. Joshua explains the theme of his flag. The bottom is black, because they all came out of the dark. Then the middle is red, because their blood is now being spilled. The top is white because they want to go into the light. Of course, Joshua doesn't explain the giant eagle-like bird in the middle. I guess that represents Jessica Alba's chances of getting a serious acting role after this show is cancelled flying away. Also, James Cameron added some Titanic-like tootles to the soundtrack that just annoyed me.

White walks on a train platform, talking on a cell phone. He informs the person on the other end that they could compromise his security in the agency by bringing in a special team now. Oh, but testifying before Congress didn't compromise his security at all? The priestess tells White that his position in the agency has served them well until now. White doesn't think that "bringing in outside muscle is the best solution to this problem." The priestess explains that the Phalanx is the best they have, and no further discussion will be tolerated on this issue. White watches as a group of muscular people, led by Lita of WWF fame, gets off the train. Lita introduces herself to White and asks why he couldn't "handle one girl on [his] own." White says that Max is hardly a girl. He shows Lita a picture and says that Max is a threat to everything they've worked for. Lita takes the picture and promises to "clean [White's] mess up." I don't know what in the hell happened to Lita since I stopped watching the WWF, but she is jacked up. Her face used to be cute; now she looks like Chyna. Maybe she's taking HGH or something? I don't know, but it's a shame.

At Jam Pony HQ, CeCe walks over and asks OC if she needs a touch-up to cover her bar code. OC checks and says it looks fine. Sketchy runs over and shows them his new baseball hat, which has a "fully rotational brim." OC makes fun of it, as she should.

Alec walks in and Normal starts singing "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow," because it's too expensive to have them sing "Happy Birthday" on television. And also because it's Alec's birthday. Alec is confused, because he doesn't really have a birthday, being created in a lab and all. Normal says he got the info from Alec's paperwork, and Alec covers nicely. Normal tells OC that Max is fired for being late. OC makes an excuse, and Normal says that he'll fire OC too, for covering. OC is not too upset about Normal's empty threats.

Max is at Logan's pad. Logan puts on two pairs of rubber gloves to protect himself from virus contact. He unzips Max's shirt and checks out the symbols on her back. I think this scene is supposed to be rife with sexual tension, but it's so not. Max says that it's awkward, and Logan agrees. He takes out a digital camera and takes pictures of the symbols. Max says that they appeared last night, and asks if Logan has had any luck with translation. Logan says that he's making progress, but some of the symbols are still missing. Logan finishes with the pictures, and Max pulls her shirt back up onto her shoulders. Okay, so she's wearing some sort of turtleneck that zips up the back, and I want to know how in the hell she got that thing zipped up when she put it on this morning. Maybe OC helped her. Logan tells Max that Sandeman put the symbols into her DNA. Max wonders why he didn't give her x-ray vision or something useful. Logan touches Max's hand and says that maybe her powers haven't shown up yet. Max says she has to leave. Logan caresses her gloved hand with his own and then gets up to zip Max's shirt up for her. Logan says he'll call if he finds anything. Max leaves. Logan washes his hands in something -- bleach, maybe?

A pregnant woman and a young boy walk down the street cautiously. The woman spots some cops and puts up her hood, then crosses the street to avoid them. The boy asks if they are headed in the right direction. The woman thinks so, but then she has a contraction or something. After it passes, she spots a hoverdrone approaching. She and the boy hide in a phone booth to avoid having their picture taken by the hoverdrone, and then continue walking down the street. A van approaches and screeches to a stop. The woman and the boy start to run away, but the van door opens and Joshua appears, urging them into the van. They hop in. The woman is named Gem, and she's an X5. The boy is named Dalton, and he's an X6. Joshua asks about her baby's due date. Gem says that the baby was due last week, and they were headed for Terminal City. Mole, who is driving the van, turns to make a comment about the medical facilities at Terminal City; thus distracted, he hits a truck that pulls out in front of him. Joshua ascertains that all of their passengers are all right. Mole can't get the truck started. Joshua notices that bystanders are starting to gather and says that they need to go. Two angry guys get out of the truck that was hit. Mole still can't start the truck. The truck's owner calls Mole a "punk-ass." Mole opens his door and reveals himself, and the shotgun he's holding. He fires a warning shot into the air, and the truck owner and all of the bystanders take off running. Joshua thinks that they should run too. Mole says, "We don't run. We fall back." I think I like Mole better than Max too. He can be on the Dark Alec spin-off.

Max answers her cell phone to find Joshua on the other end, yelling about how everything is "FUBAR." Max asks Joshua where he is. Joshua explains, and Max tells him to go to Jam Pony HQ, which is nearby, and get Alec to find him a car. Joshua's phone dies during this exchange, so he only heard the part about going to Jam Pony HQ. The group consisting of Joshua, Mole, Gem, and Dalton runs to Jam Pony HQ, but some cops see them and give chase. The group arrives outside Jam Pony HQ just as Alec is exiting. Joshua puts his hood up, but Alec is still nervous to be seen with a group of transgenics. Joshua tries to explain the situation, but the cops show up and block their exit. The cops order Mole to drop his weapon. Mole grabs Alec and uses him as a shield. Joshua does the same with Gem. They drag their "hostages" into Jam Pony HQ and shut the door behind them. Alec tells Mole not to let anyone know that he's a transgenic. Normal is upset that they've captured his "boy." The group tries to get out the back exit, but the cops are out there as well. Alec takes a bullet in the upper part of his left arm. When the group retreats, they are met by Normal, who is training a gun on them. Normal tells Alec that he's safe now. Alec quickly runs over and disarms Normal, who is shocked and stunned that his "boy" is a transgenic. One of the messengers makes a break for it, and CeCe clotheslines him and yells out that no one should move. Sketchy is psyched to hear that CeCe is "one of them too." Alec quickly takes control, ordering CeCe to call the base and say that they're in trouble. Alec orders Joshua to watch the front and Mole to watch the back, and tells Dalton to go upstairs and keep an eye on the street. Normal still can't believe that Alec is a mutant. Alec answers, "We prefer 'genetically empowered.'"

A hoverdrone flies by outside. Dalton runs upstairs and looks out the window. The police use a bullhorn to command the hostage-takers to throw their weapons out and come out with their hands up. Max arrives on the scene, atop a nearby building. She spots the hoverdrone and…oh, I can't really talk about it. She jumps atop the hoverdrone and surfs it over to Jam Pony HQ. It's so incredibly lame and cheesy, and the special effects are just awful. And it goes on way too long. And the CGI shots look more like Joshua than Max. I hate James Cameron. Max busts through the window and rides the hoverdrone to a complete stop on the floor. Is it a good idea to bring a hoverdrone into the building? Did she break it? Will it still be able to take pictures? This seems like one of those ideas that James Cameron threw out at a story meeting, and because he's the boss, no one felt they could say no, but behind his back, they rolled their eyes.

Some time has passed, and CeCe shows up to take over the watch from Mole. The hostages sit around and watch television, like, is it a good idea to let your hostages watch reports about their own situation and thus allow the police or other authorities to send them messages? No. No, it's not. Alec is too busy getting his arm bandaged by Dalton to care. Max walks over and asks OC how Gem is doing. Gem insists that she can still move if they need to get out. Mole walks in and yells at one of the hostages (the same messenger who got a fake bar code last week) for standing up. Fake Bar Code has to go to the bathroom. Sketchy takes a picture of Mole, and Mole points his gun at him. Max defuses the situation and tells Fake Bar Code to go to the bathroom. Mole wants to know who put Max in charge. Max says that the hostages are not their enemies, but Mole isn't so sure about that. Max looks around and sees everyone staring at her. Normal says that he always knew that Max was "a wrong number." Sketchy points out that Normal didn't notice that he was running "Transgenic Central." I guess Sketchy isn't going to betray the transgenics after all. Max realizes that something needs to be done to help the situation, and starts to make a speech about how things are tense. Bitchy Pigtail Messenger snarks, "Gee, I wonder why?" While I'm all for snarking at Max, is it a good idea to bitch at your armed captors? So, shut up, Bitchy Pigtail. Max asks the hostages to "sit tight and be patient," and the transgenics will be out of there soon. Normal stands and says that the hostages are leaving now. Mole trains his gun on Normal, creating a standoff. OC stands up and tells Normal to "sit [his] raggedy ass down." OC can be on the Dark Alec spin-off too. I'm still on the fence about Normal. Normal thinks that OC must be a transgenic too. OC says that she's not, but she's a friend to them, and if the hostages leave, the transgenics are in trouble. Normal doesn't care. OC does, and she thinks that the other messengers should too. OC also doesn't want anyone else to get hurt. Normal backs down.

Logan is still trying to translate the runes at his apartment. The television news starts reporting on the hostage situation at Jam Pony HQ, and Logan sits up in time to see the footage of Max surfing on the Hoverdrone. You know that James Cameron was so proud of that idea that he figured out a way to show the footage twice. Logan stands up and starts to run off to Max's rescue, but then he remembers his new super-powered exoskeleton. Then there's like a ten-minute montage of Logan putting on the exoskeleton that I think we're supposed to think is really cool and stuff, but really it's just boring. Also, Logan's exoskeleton makes a lot of noise now, and it seems like it would be difficult for him to sneak up on anyone.

The Phalanx trains in some sort of warehouse. They have big guns. And I'm not just talking about their biceps. Lita jumps up and does an Iron Cross on some ropes. Her phone rings. She walks over and answers it. White is on the scene outside Jam Pony HQ. He tells Lita that he found Max, but she's in the midst of a bunch of police, government people, and "every news crew in the city." Lita notes that "this complicates things." White says he thinks they can still complete their mission, but he needs "a little time to heat things up." Lita says she'll be ready. She hangs up the phone and uses her huge automatic weapon to shoot at a target with Max's picture on it. Okay, that last bit was so stupid. Wait, she's going to take Max out? Oh, now I get it.

Detective Ramon Clemente, who is apparently the ranking cop there, barks out orders and tries to secure the scene. Why are they allowing bystanders to just hang out nearby? Dumb. White and Otto march up and flash their badges at Clemente, and White announces that he's in charge now. Clemente isn't buying it, and tells White to get lost. Okay, now Clemente can be on the spin-off as well. White says that Clemente is "out of [his] league," and needs to order his men to stand down. Clemente says he's not leaving until the hostages are safe. White says that the captors are dangerous and highly-trained transgenics. Clemente tells White and Otto (whom he calls White's "lady friend," which shouldn't crack me up, but does) to get back behind the barricade. White backs down.

Insert more footage of bystanders being interviewed on the news. And guess what? They hate transgenics. Inside Jam Pony HQ, the hostages watch the footage, and it seems to make them feel a little more sympathetic towards Max and her kin. Max promises Joshua that everything will be okay. Joshua doesn't know that it'll ever be okay. The phone rings, and Max walks over to answer it; Normal tells her that if it's about a package, she should take a number. Max answers the phone, and Clemente is on the other end. Max says he can call her 452. Clemente agrees. Max demands a van parked outside the entrance. Clemente says that she has to release the hostages first. Suddenly, this has turned into Die Hard. I bet Clemente is only a few days away from retirement. Max won't release any hostages until they are guaranteed safe passage out of there. Clemente offers medical assistance for the pregnant chick, but Max refuses. Clemente wants to know the hostage release schedule. Max says they'll release half when the van arrives and half when they reach their destination. Clemente wants to know the destination, but Max says she'll tell him when he needs to know that. How dumb does he think she is? Although I guess it can't hurt to ask. Mole doesn't think that the cops are just going to let them go. Max "thinks" about this.

In more news interviews, it is revealed that even more bystanders hate transgenics. What a shocker. Sketchy stands up and creeps over to ask Max if he can have an exclusive interview with her about her life as a transgenic. Max disgustedly refuses. Mole walks by. OC begs Gem to tell her that Mole isn't her "baby daddy." Gem reveals that the father of her baby is another X5, her breeding partner. OC doesn't think that sounds very romantic. Gem admits that it wasn't. What in the hell was that about? I don't know.

Outside, Clemente waves a bus into position and then calls Max to tell her that her transportation has arrived. He tells her to send out the hostages. Max hangs up and turns, yelling, "It's on." White tells Otto to get their people into position. Police snipers head up to the roof across the street. Government snipers take positions a floor below. Logan walks through the crowd outside the building. Alec opens the door partway. Max peers out and then talks to Logan via cell phone to ask how things look. Logan characterizes the situation as "dicey," because there are snipers on the roof and the bus door is "on the exposed side." He advises Max to "use the messengers as shields." Max doesn't look happy about that. Max hollers out to Clemente that she needs the snipers on the roof to pull back or the deal is off. Clemente orders the snipers on the roof down, and they retreat. The government guys stay put, but Logan hasn't spotted them yet. Logan tells Max that the snipers are gone, and Max hollers that the first group is coming out. Max gathers together a bunch of messengers and sends them out the door. They get outside and run towards Clemente. Once they are clear, Clemente yells that the keys are in the bus, so now it's Max's move. Max tells everyone that the snipers won't shoot because they have "a kid and a pregnant girl," and the snipers don't know which ones are transgenics and which ones aren't. Mole points out that in some cases, it's fairly obvious, and he grabs Normal to shield him. OC points out that the cops saw Max surfing in, and she stands in front of Max to serve as her shield. CeCe points out that they don't know she's a transgenic, so OC tells her to help shield Max. Joshua grabs Sketchy to serve as his shield. Does Alec get a shield, or serve as a shield? That's the important question here.

White tells his snipers to wait for his command (although the closed captioning said, "Anytime.") The hostage/transgenic group inches out of the building. Normal has the most hilarious look on his face. Okay, I guess he can be on the spin-off too. Logan notices White and Otto standing nearby in the crowd, looking up. He glances around to figure out what they're looking at, and notices the muzzles of the government snipers' guns sticking out of the windows. White orders the snipers to take the shot. Logan pulls out a gun and calls for Max, then uses his new super-legs to jump on top of a police car. A sniper shoots CeCe just as Max turns around to head back into the building. Logan jumps sideways and fires at the snipers while flying through the air. Hee! Logan looked funny flying through the air. He's definitely not making the spin-off. The hostage/transgenic group runs back inside. Mole fires a few shots for cover while Max grabs CeCe and drags her back inside. Clemente orders his snipers to cease fire, unaware that his snipers aren't the ones shooting. Logan and Mole continue to fire at the snipers until everyone is inside. Logan runs into Jam Pony HQ, and they close the door behind him. Max and Alec drag CeCe further in. Max asks if anyone else was hit, and finds out that no one was. Logan takes CeCe's pulse and then shakes his head, indicating that she's dead as a doornail. Max looks "sad."

Mole orders all of the hostages onto the floor. OC realizes that they killed CeCe. Max asks OC to take care of Gem, who's having the longest active labor ever. Joshua wonders why this happened, because they followed the cops' orders. Mole blames Max for trusting the cops. Logan says that it's White's fault. Joshua is pissed to hear that White is out there. Max realizes that White just wanted to "escalate the situation." Mole yells that it doesn't matter who did what, because everyone wants them dead. Then Mole grabs Sketchy and drags him off to the side. Max asks what he's doing. Mole says that until they get safe passage, he's going to kill one hostage per hour. Logan orders Mole to let Sketchy go. Mole growls that he doesn't take orders from humans. Max says that he does take orders from her. Mole says he doesn't. Logan says that White wants them to start shooting people, because it will just confirm to the public that transgenics are murderers. Mole yells, "Shut up! You're not one of us!" I think Mole can be on the spin-off too. Logan says that he's not, but he's there with them. Max announces that if they don't stick together, they won't make it out alive. Mole releases Sketchy, but says that if the cops enter the building, he's going to start taking hostages out. Mole stomps away and tells Joshua to follow him. Joshua stares at Max, who is sad that Joshua is thinking for himself and not following her every order. Joshua walks off, following Mole. Sketchy thanks Max for saving him.

Outside, White approaches Clemente, who is pissed. White says that Clemente's snipers got carried away. White hands Clemente a fax from the governor's office that gives White "overriding jurisdiction." Clemente crumples the fax. White says that his tactical team is going to take over, and Clemente needs to stay out of his way. Clemente says, "And I only have three more days until retirement. I don't need this shit."

Max and Logan lay CeCe out on a table and cover her face. Logan tells Max that it wasn't her fault. Max says that it's all her fault, because she let the transgenics loose in the world, and there's no place for them anywhere. Logan starts singing "Somewhere" from West Side Story. Okay, not really. Logan says, "You gave them freedom, Max. The thing about freedom, it's never free." Oh, who writes this crap? That is the worst line ever. How did Michael Weatherly deliver that with a straight face?

Time passes. OC is telling Gem to push. Normal overhears and walks over, telling OC that she's doing it all wrong, and Gem shouldn't be pushing at all. Normal tells Gem to relax and breathe. Normal peeks under Gem's skirt and tells her that she's fully dilated, so it won't be long now. OC asks how Normal knows about this. Normal says that his father was a dairy farmer, so he knows his way around the inside of a heifer. Shut up, Normal. Max walks over, and Gem says that she needs a weapon. Max tells her that she's out of the fight. Gem insists that she and her baby are getting out of there alive. Max promises that if Gem concentrates on having the baby, Max will make sure they survive.

Sigh. More citizens proclaim on the news that the transgenics are evil, terrible, inhuman monsters. Dear James: We get it. WE! GET! IT! Love, the world.

The Phalanx pulls up in a van. Lita walks up to White, who calls Clemente to say that he's inserting his team now. Clemente reluctantly agrees. Otto walks over and asks what's going on. White says that this team is on loan from another agency. Otto protests, but White says that Otto isn't "cleared for this op." He orders Otto to "walk away; do it now." Otto does. White tells Lita to look at the bystanders. As White and Lita walk towards the building, White says that when they carry Max out in a body bag, the bystanders will be clapping and cheering. White concludes, "They'll never know she's their only hope."

Max walks up to Logan and Joshua and announces that White wants her, so she's going out there. Logan refuses to allow that. Max says that White wants this thing to end as badly as possible, and she's not going to let that happen. Logan decides that now would be a good time to share his translation of the runes on Max's body. And he didn't tell her this before because…? Logan doesn't have the exact translation, but it goes a little something like this: "When the shroud of death covers the face of the earth, the one whose power is hidden will deliver the helpless." Max asks what that means. Logan says that something bad, "biblically bad," is going to happen. OC adds that Max is the one who will stop it. Mole walks over and says that if all this is true, maybe Max should go out there. Max is fast and has a chance at making it, and White might leave the rest of them alone. Logan disagrees. Mole says that they're out of options. Logan and Mole continue to argue, but the words go all slow motion to indicate how overwhelmed Max is with this new information. Max turns, and there's a focus pull in on her face. She turns and says, "They're coming." Max tells everyone to get upstairs, and orders Joshua to carry Gem.

Meanwhile, the Phalanx members and White walk out of the mist. White reminds Lita that the target is Max. Lita asks about the hostages. White tells her to take out as many hostages as possible, and then they'll blame the transgenics for the deaths. Lita nods, and then scales the wall.

Inside, the transgenics and the hostages reach the second floor. Max orders Joshua, Normal, and OC to take Gem behind the desk. Gem is trying not to make any noise, but she's in labor and all. Downstairs, a door blows open and a goon bursts in, followed by White. They shoot at Mole and Alec, who retreat up the stairs. Mole indicates to Max via sign language that he's out of ammo, and Alec indicates that he doesn't have much ammo left either. Max tells them to wait for her signal. Just then, the Phalanx members descend from the ceiling without ropes or anything. It was really cool. That's the one cool shot that I'll give James Cameron props for. Gem tries not to scream. Max uses hand signals to give orders to Mole, Joshua, Alec, and Logan. One Phalanx member walks over to the door to the stairs and unlocks it, letting White in. The squad members sweep the area with the lights on the end of their guns. And then there's a really weird commercial break, as if James Cameron isn't used to television so he wasn't quite sure about where to put it.

When we return, it's still the same scene: Phalanx members searching, Gem laboring, everyone else hiding. The music is very tense, but there's actually very little tension in the scene. You know Gem and the baby won't die. You know none of the regulars will die, because this isn't that kind of show. Suddenly, Max, Alec, and Mole swing down from their hiding places up in the rafters, and the fighting begins. Joshua nips out from his hiding place and joins in. Logan pops up from behind a filing cabinet and shoots a Phalanx member, looking kind of stunned that he managed to do it. Mole shoots at White, who runs across the room and dives behind some shelves. Alec gets his ass kicked by a chick. Joshua tosses a guy through a table. Max and Lita square off and start fighting. Mole beats the crap out of White. What happened to White's fighting abilities? Lita tosses Max through a window, and then jumps off the desk and performs a hurricanerana on Max. Joshua starts tossing people around like rag dolls. Logan goes through a window. Lita does another hurricanerana. Logan gets punched in the face over and over until Joshua comes to his rescue. Normal puts his head underneath Gem's skirt and announces that it's time to push now. Lita bounces off a bar and clotheslines Max; then she does a lionsault on Max. White has recovered his fighting abilities, and kicks Mole around. Joshua runs up and realizes that White is the one who killed Annie, and he goes berserk. Alec is still getting his ass kicked by a chick. He gets tossed through a window. How many windows are there in this place?

Normal is still under Gem's skirt, and I feel like I've seen a little too much of Gem's thighs in this episode. Lita does more wrestling moves to Max. Alec's fighting partner picks up a wood beam, but just then Logan walks up and kicks her through yet another window and into the room where Gem is laboring. Gem reaches over and punches her in the face. OC sits on her while Dalton handcuffs her. Max manages to get one side of a pair of handcuffs on Lita's wrist. Max holds onto the other side; she runs up a wall and flips behind Lita, then swings Lita around a post. Max handcuffs Lita to the post. Meanwhile, Joshua is still beating the crap out of White. I like angry growling Joshua better than regular Joshua. Logan helps Alec up, and they cuff the various Phalanx members lying on the ground. Max spots Joshua bending White over his knee and preparing to snap White's spine. Max tells Joshua not to do it, but Joshua thinks White deserves to die. Max agrees, but says that if Joshua kills him, everyone will remember how a transgenic killed a human. Joshua considers, then releases White. Max makes a smart remark that is too stupid to repeat here.

Max walks into the office area to see that Gem has delivered her baby. Gem announces that the baby doesn't have a bar code. Max announces that the baby is free, but Mole says that she isn't yet. Max looks around, "concerned."

Logan, dressed in Phalanx gear, walks out of the building and orders everyone to get back. Various other members of the gang, disguised in Phalanx gear, lead the transgenics out in handcuffs. Logan tells Clemente that White wants his people in there to secure the crime scene. The "captives" are put into two vans. Sketchy drives one van while Logan drives the other. Sketchy wonders where they're going, and OC tells him to just drive. Clemente and his officers run towards the building.

Max announces that they are clear, and everyone cheers. Logan tells Alec that the chick was kicking his ass. Shut up, Logan. If it weren't for Joshua, you'd be dead right now too. Max tells Logan to head for Terminal City. Is it a good idea for the humans in the group to go to Terminal City?

Clemente walks in and finds Bitchy Pigtail and Normal waiting. They tell him that they're fine, but he should go upstairs. Clemente and his officers head upstairs, where they find the Phalanx members, stripped down and handcuffed. Clemente chuckles and greets White, who mumbles angrily through his gag. Clemente promises to go after the escaped transgenics.

Police cars appear behind the two vans, sirens blaring. They order the vans to pull over. Max tells Logan to keep driving. Sketchy wonders what he should do, and OC tells him to follow Max. Max tells Logan to bust through the gate, so he does. Sketchy and the cop cars follow. They are now in Terminal City. Max gives Logan some directions that take the vans into a parking garage. So now they're trapped. Great plan, Max. The cop cars stop, and the cops come out of their cars. Clemente orders the fugitives to throw their weapons out and show their hands. Mole asks what the plan is now. Max says they should follow orders. Alec says, "I fought the law and the law won." Not only would Alec not know that song, Jensen Ackles probably doesn't know it either. Unless he knows it from that Cheers episode where Sam kept walking around with it blaring on a boombox.

The transgenic gang throws their weapons out and steps out with their hands up. Clemente orders them to get down on their knees with their hands on their heads. They all do, except for Max, who walks slowly towards the cops. She would have been so shot by now. Clemente suggests that she get down on the ground. Max tells him that he should probably go. Clemente says he won't tell her again. Max says she won't tell him again. Clemente notices that they are suddenly surrounded by all of the other transgenics, the other residents of Terminal City. The cops are in fact fully hemmed by an army of armed transgenics. Max says that the cops can try to arrest them all, but it probably won't work. Clemente realizes that it's time to retreat. The cops leave. Clemente stays and compliments Max on keeping the incident from turning into a bloodbath. Max says that Clemente held up his end of the bargain too. Clemente tells Max that the whole thing is way above his head, and the outcome depends on decisions that she makes now. Then Clemente leaves, and Max looks "pensive." Mole orders everyone to "escape and evade." Max thinks they should stay there. Mole points out that the perimeter of Terminal City will be locked down shortly, and they will be surrounded by tanks and the National Guard. Dix and Runty agree with Mole. Max asks where they're going to go. She can't stop anyone from leaving, but she's through being afraid. Max gives a big pep talk about how they were made to be soldiers, and now it's time for the government to take responsibility for those actions. Max says that she's "proud to be a freak," and that they should make a stand. She asks who is with her, and raises a fist in the air. Joshua does too. Slowly, everyone else raises his or her fist. Even Mole. God, that's so cheesy. It would have been funny if Gem were holding up her baby's fist, though.

Normal is interviewed about his experiences on television. He says that the transgenics are not monsters, and then yells at one of his messengers.

The same reporter from the opening does a stand-up in front of Terminal City, describing this as the third day of the standoff. There are several hundred transgenics inside, and police and National Guard outside. Cut to Joshua and two other people raising the Freak Flag up on the roof in very disrespectful Iwo Jima monument style. The transgenics stand on the roof and stare up at their flag. Gem looks down at her baby. Logan and Max hold gloved hands. So are they back together or what? And did OC and Sketchy get out? And what about Alec? I guess we'll have to wait until season to find out.
