Brainiac

Asha walks down an alley and approaches Logan's Asstek. She hands him some papers through the window, and he confirms that she got proof of police corruption. Asha acts very nervous as she begs Logan to get Eyes Only to do a broadcast that night exposing the police corruption. Logan notices Asha's behavior, and asks if she's okay. Asha confesses that she's sure that someone is onto the S1W, and she needs Eyes Only to do the broadcast soon as a form of protection.

Cut to a chubby guy watching a wall of televisions. The camera movements simulate his eyes moving quickly from screen to screen; they're similar to the camera movements used when Max is using her Super Zoom Vision, so you get the impression that he might be from Manticore. Chubby watches the various programs, then lifts up his hand and points to one of the screens moments before an Eyes Only broadcast starts up. Soon all of the televisions are showing Eyes Only talking about how the S1W has uncovered police corruption. Chubby stands up, zips up his hoodie, and walks out of the apartment.

Chubby plays the Alien Vs. Predator game in an arcade. A little kid walks up and asks how many times he's played the game before. Chubby says that he never has, and advises the kid to move. Just then, a police SWAT team bursts into the arcade; if the kid hadn't moved, he probably would have been knocked down. Chubby continues to play the game, then stops suddenly and shoves the kid's head down, ducking his own as well. Moments later, one of the cops fires a bullet where their heads had been moments earlier. I'm sure you get it by now, right? Chubby somehow knows what's going to happen before it does. The cops grab the members of the S1W, including Asha, from a back room and lead them out. One of the S1W members has been shot. The cops force the S1W members into a paddy wagon, while Asha protests that the guy who was shot needs to see a doctor. Chubby follows the group outside, putting his hands on his head and trying to pose as an S1W member. The cops completely ignore him. As the wagon pulls away, Asha stares back at Chubby, who pulls out a candy bar and takes a big bite. Because, you know, fat people eat when they are sad or upset. And carry candy bars around with them at all times. That's why they are fat.

At Jam Pony HQ, Normal watches a newswoman on the television explaining that an anonymous tip led police to the S1W headquarters. Normal yells to anyone within hearing distance that they need more anonymous tips to "get these outlaws off the streets." Max walks by and says that the S1W aren't outlaws; they're just trying to expose corruption. Normal asks when she got to be such an expert on the S1W, but Max gets a page before she can answer. Also, Max is wearing the dumbest-looking hat I've ever seen. It's kind of like a bucket hat, but turned up on one side. Or it might be a newsboy cap turned sideways. Regardless, it's dumb. Max goes to the phone, and Alec wanders over to jokingly ask what she knows about the S1W. While Max makes her call, Normal motions Alec to come closer. When Alec gets there, Normal wonders what's up with Max, and asks if Alec thinks she might be a member of S1W. Isn't Normal still supposed to be scared of Max? Max hangs up the phone and catches Normal and Alec staring at her. Normal covers by saying that he has a delivery for Alec near where the S1W was arrested. Max snatches the package and takes off, which Normal uses as more fodder for his theory.

Max arrives at the arcade from the scene. She finds a cop playing one of those sniper arcade games with the rifle. He calls over his friend who was guarding the back room, conveniently leaving the door open for Max to enter. Once inside, Max starts looking around, and is then surprised to see Alec enter. She wonders what he's doing there, and Alec says that he's there for the same reason as Max -- looking for Asha's address book, because the police will question the people listed in it. Max wonders why Alec cares, and it turns out that he's listed in Asha's address book because Asha asked for his number at Crash one night. Or maybe he offered it to her. He's not sure. Max finds Asha's backpack, and Alec grabs the address book, but his number isn't in there. He asks if Max has ever pretended to write down a guy's phone number, and Max smirks. Alec finds a book of poetry in the backpack, and there are some papers stuck inside, on which is written some of Asha's own poetry, they assume. They walk back into the arcade, and Alec teases Max that Asha was probably writing love poems about Logan. Max says that Logan and Asha work together. Alec wonders why Max is helping out Asha, when Logan used to be her boyfriend. Max tells him it wasn't like that, and grabs the book from him, snarling that people were arrested there last night. Alec counters that they weren't designed to be chumps. Max tells Alec that some snitch turned the S1W in, and tells Alec to hold the cheap shots, because it's not about her. Alec is staring at a video game nearby, and finally interrupts Max to point out that her name is inscribed in the top score slot with a heart to it, "so maybe it is about [her]." Alec grabs a jacket from the top of the machine -- Chubby's jacket.

Chubby stands near the mailboxes in his apartment building. An attractive woman is getting her mail, and Chubby says cheerfully that he's expecting someone to arrive at about 7:03, and he'll be away for a while, so he was wondering if she could get his mail. The woman doesn't seem to hear him, and finally asks if he said something and walks away. Chubby looks distressed.

Max and Alec talk to the little kid that Chubby saved during the raid. The kid says that he can't give them a description because he didn't really notice Chubby, and then reveals that it's going to sound crazy, but it's like Chubby knew stuff that was going to happen before it did. The kid explains how Chubby saved his life. Max wonders if the kid knows how to find Chubby. Alec looks at the tag in Chubby's jacket and finds an address written on the tag, along with a name: Brain. Alec and Max turn to leave, and the kid says that Brain told him that the hottest chick he had ever seen was going to show up looking for Brain. Alec laughs, and Max punches his arm as they walk out.

Brain completes his grooming ritual, preparing for Max to arrive. He sniffs a candy bar, but doesn't eat it, because he's not sad, I guess. But you know fat people -- they can't stay away from candy for long. Brain walks into his television room, where he sees a woman on the screen giving some cooking instructions. She says to "break an egg." Brain nods and then checks a map on the wall, repeating the instructions. Then he turns off all of his televisions.

Max and Alec walk down the hallway towards Brain's apartment, bickering over whether or not they're walking into a trap. Max says that she didn't ask Alec to come along. Brain pulls open his apartment door before they even knock, saying angrily that Max was supposed to come alone. Cut to Brain, tied up in a chair and blindfolded at a secret hideout location. Logan asks Max and Alec if this is the guy who knew that the raid was going down. Max answers that Brain told her it was only a seventy-three percent certainty. Brain complains about the tightness of his restraints and calls Max by name. Logan asks if Max knows Brain, and Alec says that Brain has a crush on her. Logan tells Max and Alec that the bus containing the S1W is going to cross a train track at a certain time. Brain yells out that the train plan is a bad idea. Logan gets all angry that someone dares criticize him. Brain continues babbling about why the idea is bad. Max studies Logan's map while Alec teases Max by reading some more of Asha's poetry. Brain stares into Logan's eyes and recognizes him as Eyes Only. Logan walks away without saying anything, only to find Max and Alec fighting over the poetry book. Max covers it up and tells Logan to stay with Brain while she and Alec go rescue the S1W members. Max and Alec bicker their way out. Brain yells after them that their plan will only work if they break an egg. Whatever that means. The reason there's really no suspense here is that you know that Brain is a good guy, and fairly harmless. He saved the kid, after all. So the only tension is whether or not he is the informant, but anyone who has seen television before knows that he's not. So there's no tension in the episode.

A bus carries the S1W members along a darkened road. The camera pans across some of the members: Asha, an Asian guy, and the guy who got shot. Max stands on the side of the road, hitchhiking, and the bus driver stops. What bus driver would stop for a hitchhiker, even if she did look like Max? Alec reaches into the bus window and punches the driver. Max hops on the bus, and between the two of them, they take out all of the guards. Alec notices that the driver managed to trip a silent alarm before he was hit. Max starts driving the bus along. Two police cars pull out behind them, sirens blaring. Suddenly, this show has turned into Dukes of Hazzard. Alec tries to find the right key to unlock the back of the bus and free the S1W members. Max sees that a train is approaching the crossing on the road ahead, blocking her path. She asks Alec what Brain said before they left. Alec thinks that Brain said, "Break a leg." Max sees a billboard that says, "Break an egg," and remembers that Brain told her the same thing. The cop cars close in. The train is still crossing. Max yells to everyone to hold on as she directs the bus off the road and busts through the billboard. This allows her to get across the tracks just ahead of the train while the cop cars are trapped on the other side.

Max and Alec return to the secret hideout with the S1W members. Max orders Brain to tell them how he knows about the train and the billboard. Brain says that he's an X-Series, just like them. Alec checks, and sure enough, Brain has a bar code on the back of his neck. Max asks what he is, and Alec points out that he doesn't look like a soldier. Brain says that he's part of the IT series, so he's like having a general, troops, databases, and stealth ability, all in one package. Alec asks about the stealth thing, and Brain says that when you look away from him, you forget that he's there. Alec wonders how that explains Brain's apparent psychic abilities. Brain says that he is able to compute statistic probabilities instantaneously. Max says that either way, he can predict the future. Brain says that he can see his future with Max, and that he didn't betray the S1W. Brain claims that it was one of the S1W members.

Asha tells Logan that she doesn't want to run away. Logan says that she doesn't have a choice, because the police have her fingerprints and pictures on file now. Max walks over and gives Asha her backpack back, saying that Asha's address book and poems are inside. Asha shoots Max a weird look. Logan is upset that Max has untied Brain, since he turned in the S1W. Max isn't so sure that he did, and promises to keep Brain "on a short leash."

Max and Brain look through some files using Logan's computers. Max explains the history of the S1W to Brain. Max wonders what the connection is between the S1W exposing police corruption and getting arrested. Isn't that obvious? I must be missing something. Brain plays with a camera connected to a computer, and Max cuffs him in the head and tells him to pay attention. Brain says that Max was just wondering what's going on between Logan and Asha. So he can read minds, too? I can accept that you could predict the future with probability to an extent, but they're taking it a bit too far. Max pulls up a picture of the guy who got shot, and Brain says that since he got shot, he's probably not the mole, unless that's what he wants them to think, and he actually is the mole. Max pulls up a picture of Asha. Brain says that Asha is going to gain a lot of weight in the future. Max giggles and asks if Asha turned them in. Brain doesn't know. Max pulls up a picture of the Asian guy.

Before we hear Brain's response, we cut to Logan telling Asha and the others that he doesn't know who Brain is. Asian Guy approaches and listens in on the conversation. The group argues over whether or not Brain is okay. Cut to Max asking Brain how he can say that none of them did it. Brain complains that he's "not optimized for this," and then laments that he's finally with Max and he's letting her down. Brain starts talking about how Max doesn't remember him from Manticore, which is fine because it's how he's designed. Brain reminisces about Max in her Manticore days, and then reveals that after she busted out, he studied up on her, so he knows everything about her. Max thinks that Brain knows about her, but he doesn't know her. Brain disagrees, and vows to do anything for her. Max leans forward and asks Brain to tell her who the informant is. Brain groans with disappointment, and then says that there was a .05% chance that Max was going to kiss him right then, so he was hoping. Instead of being creeped out, Max smiles.

Guy Who Got Shot worries about Brain. Max and Brain walk in. Max says that Brain saved them, and they should be thanking him. Brain starts babbling about how sector police are approaching, and gives them instructions on how to get out. Max asks when this is happening, and Brain says it's happening now. Max orders everyone to follow Brain's instructions. Guy Who Got Shot tells Max to lead the way. Brain stays behind, and injures his ankle. The police capture him.

A truck pulls up to a warehouse. The S1W members were hiding in the back. They head into the warehouse. Asha calls Logan to let him know that they are at the pick-up point, and she's not sure how to know whom to trust. Alec, sitting in Logan's apartment, makes a smart-ass remark, and Logan tells him sharply to shut up. I kind of wish that Alec would beat Logan up, at least once. Logan gives Asha some information regarding when they will be picked up. Max finds out that the police are holding Brain. Logan tells Asha to be careful because they don't know who's ratting them out to the cops. Behind his back, Alec mouths, "I love you!" to tease Max some more. Hee! Max takes off to go get Brain out of jail. Logan tells Asha to keep her plans to herself. Asha doesn't want Logan to hang up, and then she sits there not saying anything. Logan totally blows her off. After he hangs up, Alec asks, "What in the world do they see in you?" Hee! Alec is the only thing that makes this show worth watching.

Max zooms down the highway on her motorcycle. In his jail cell, Brain uses a file to saw away at the bars. Max walks in wearing a guard's uniform, saying that he must have been expecting her. Then she makes a crack about how Brain couldn't slip through the cell bars since he's so fat. Nice. Max sighs and gives Brain a piggyback ride down the hall. Brain babbles on and on about how people don't see him while Max strains under his weight. He's overweight, but he's not that fat. Brain reveals that he turned himself in, and Max is pissed. They finally reach an office of some sort, and Max dumps Brain onto the floor. Some guards walk in; Brain and Max hide behind the desk. Brain asks Max if she knows what the chance is of the two of them being together under exactly those circumstances. Oh, this whole conversation is too pointless to recap. The important part is that Brain ends up having a vision of Max running through a factory trying to rescue the S1W members from "the traitor in their midst" and getting shot when she kicks open a door with a sign on it that says, "Danger. Do Not Enter." Brain doesn't tell Max that she's going to get shot, though, even though then she could prevent it. Brain pulls a book from a desk. Max realizes that it looks like Asha's book. Brain says that there are codes in the poems, and that's how the informant has been communicating with the police. Max doesn't think that Asha would betray the S1W, because it would hurt Logan. Brain agrees, and says that it must be another S1W member's book. He pulls out a candy bar and starts munching. Because whenever fat people have some downtime, they eat candy.

While waiting for their pick-up, Asha pulls the poetry book out of her backpack. Guy Who Got Shot comes up and says that it's his book. Asha gives it back.

Max and Brain zoom down the road on her motorcycle. Brain decodes the poetry book while they drive, and reveals that the traitor is Guy Who Got Shot. Brain puts his arms around Max, and Max tells him to watch his hands and move them lower. He does, and Max replies, "Not that low." Heh. Jessica Alba gave a good line delivery there. It makes you wonder if she has to tell that to guys a lot.

Asha checks her watch and then informs Guy Who Got Shot that it's time to move. They head out. Max arrives at the warehouse where the S1W is waiting. Brain gets off the bike and says that Max found the poem in Asha's backpack, assumed that it was to Logan, and helped Asha anyway. This is one of those things that won't make sense until the end of the episode. And even then, it's questionable. Brain asks how he looks. Max asks if there's something that he's not telling her, and then tells him that he looks "magnificent." Brain sighs happily and limps off. Suddenly, a bunch of cops show up and start firing at the S1W members inside the warehouse. Max uses her motorcycle to take out some of the cops, and then defeats the others in hand-to-hand combat. Or, actually, foot-to-face combat. Max spies Guy Who Got Shot leading the others back into the warehouse.

Guy Who Got Shot urges the S1W members to go a certain way. Asha points out that the gunfire has stopped, and maybe it's safe to leave. Guy Who Got Shot isn't having it, because he says there are more cops coming, and they all follow him. Max walks into the warehouse, which looks exactly like Brain's vision. Meanwhile, Brain busts into the warehouse through a window of some sort. He takes a bite of his candy bar for encouragement. Guy Who Got Shot leads the S1W members into a small room, then shuts the door, locking them inside. He goes and hides in a nearby room with his gun. And guess what? His room has a sign on the door that says, "Danger. Do Not Enter," just like Brain's vision.

Max walks down the hallway and remembers what Brain told her. Guy Who Got Shot waits in his room. Brain goes to take a bite of his candy bar, but then decides that he doesn't need it! Because he's strong! He doesn't need food to comfort him! He stomps on his candy bar! Stomps on it! Then he starts running down the hallway.

Max has another flashback to what Brain told her. Didn't he actually put her in more danger by basically giving her instructions that led her right to the guy with the gun, without telling her that she would get shot? Just checking. Anyway, Max kicks the door open, the guy aims his gun, and Brain comes flying from out of nowhere, fortified by love and not chocolate, to knock Max down. And, of course, he takes a bullet for her, because people in love are selfless. Max disarms Guy Who Got Shot and goes over to check on Brain Who Got Shot. The S1W members bust out of their room and see Original Guy Who Got Shot lying on the ground, and Max tending to Brain. As they stare, Brain gives them instructions on how to get out. Max realizes that Brain saw what was going to happen and saved her. Brain asks Max what the chances are for them. Max says they are one hundred percent. Yeah, she can say that now while he's dying. Brain says he didn't care if anyone else saw him; he just wanted to be seen by her. The cops bust in. Max presses her hands on Brain's chest wound and slumps over him, playing dead. The cops pronounce the area clear. Max turns to Brain to tell him, but he's dead.

Asha walks into Logan's apartment and asks if his message was true. Logan puts a piece of paper down and confirms that all of the police files of the arrests are gone. Asha is happy to be safe, and thanks Logan. Logan says that a candy bar melted on the precinct's data server, causing the problem. Aw. Brain was fat, and he used food to save the S1W. There's another stupid probability joke. Asha asks Logan if he wants to come tell the S1W the good news. Logan says he needs to do someone a favor, and might meet up with them later. Asha looks disappointed as she leaves. Logan sits down at his desk and begins an Eyes Only broadcast. He looks at a picture saved on his computer from when Brain was fooling around with the camera.

Max sits in Brain's apartment and watches The Invisible Man on one of the televisions. An Eyes Only broadcast begins. Alec walks in and says he doesn't know how Brain stood all the noise. Max asks why Alec is there. A moving man walks in the door with a dolly, and Alec stands to block Max's view so that she can't see it, as he claims that he wanted to see if Max was okay. They listen to the Eyes Only broadcast, where Logan calls Brain a "great and fearless warrior." Max says that she just wanted people to see Brain, and then asks Alec again why he's there. She realizes that he's going to sell all of the televisions. Alec says he'll probably keep one, since he's moving into the apartment. Alec takes a look at Brain's picture on the screen and says, "He's kind of magnificent." One single, perfect tear slides down Max's cheek as she agrees. Bets on whether Brain is ever mentioned again, even though Max was supposedly so affected by him?

week: Alec has a history! Yay! It's like an episode of my dream show: Dark Alec.
