Topologize

Tom and Brooke welcome us as all the couples stand behind them on the stage. Tom reminds us that last night, the couples had to tell a personal story through their dance, and it was "an emotional rollercoaster." As a result, the leaderboard got shaken up. Len gets to choose who he would like to see in an encore, and he chooses Hines and Kym's samba again. And before they even set foot on the floor, Tom tells them that they are safe. Well, that was quick.

Before they dance, we see a clip package of Hines and Kym last night, and they were both clearly delighted with how it went. Hines can't stop smiling. So let's see it again! You know what I dig about Hines? He gets it. He's a football player, but he's not constantly worried about looking too feminine, or what his teammates are going to see. He just goes out and has fun and dances. Good for him. And it's fun to watch.

More reviews of what happened last night. Sugar Ray was really fired up before he went out, but I didn't feel that the intensity translated well to his routine. Romeo was thinking about his late cousins, which was sad, but his dance was also kind of sad. So are these two gentleman safe or in jeopardy? Well, Sugar Ray and Anna are safe. And Romeo and Chelsie are also safe. Hmm. Does that mean Wendy is going home?

OneRepublic is on hand to sing "Good Life" and Lacey and Dmitry will be dancing. This is all I know about this group: they sang that song "Apologize" and my teenaged niece LOVED it. She kept singing it, and I had never heard it because I am old, and I thought the name of the song was "Topologize." Like topology? And I was very confused. Anyway, Lacey's hair has not improved since she was eliminated from the show. I really do not get that look. Maybe it's because I'm old. I should ask my niece what she thinks. The dancing is good, but it's very modern, and as I have mentioned may times, I watch this show for the ballroom and the Latin. It's very frantic, but Dmitry and Lacey have good chemistry.

Brooke's backstage doing dumb interviews with Wendy and Petra. Wendy says that she and Tony obviously have to go "back to the lab" and do some work. She obviously thinks the judges are nuts, and she is awesome. I don't get her. Does she watch the tapes? And she thinks that's good? She's got Kate Gosselin disease. Petra is gushing about how surprised she was at their high scores and whatever. She's very nice and sincere, but boring. Then Brooke talks to Maks and Kirstie about their fall. Maks repeats his tale of having a muscle weakness and emphasizes that it was all his fault. Brooke wants to go in-depth on it (and honestly, I wouldn't mind a little detail), but Maks and Kirstie are totally uncooperative. Maks has stated that he doesn't want to take all the attention away from Kirstie, not to mention the other couples who did great routines. But who is this Maks? Who doesn't want all the attention? That's new. It's really awkward because Brooke keeps asking them questions and they won't answer. Ugh. Couldn't a producer have prepped them or something? And if they wouldn't answer, just scrapped the whole segment?

Tom is back to tell us the fates of Wendy and Petra. But first, of course, a clip package. It cracks me up because Petra is backstage talking to the camera, waiting to go on, and a PA or stage manager is trying to get her to go out, and it takes her a second to go, and the PA totally rolls his eyes at the camera like, "Ugh. Talent. So annoying." I love that dude. Also, Dmitry totally lifted Petra off the ground when he swung her around. I guess Carrie Ann chose to ignore it. As for Wendy, she claims that the competition isn't about personality, it's about feet, and she thinks she could win a personality competition. See, that's the problem. She doesn't think she needs to show any personality. We'd overlook her bad feet, at least for a few weeks, if she would actually show something. Anyway, Petra is safe, and Wendy is still in jeopardy. No surprise there.

This week, the contestants were given cameras and told to shoot footage when they're not at rehearsals. It's boring. They have families. They work. Romeo knows the names of all the female employees. Ralph Macchio films his butt. I told you that you weren't missing anything.

Selena Gomez is here to "sing." She's actually not horrible, but she has zero stage presence. If your voice is mediocre, you have to be more of a performer. I always wonder in these cases if the backup singers are like, "WTF, why is she out front?" Mark and Chelsie come out to dance, and I don't know what Mark's doing but he's hopping around like a frog. Then he throws Chelsie around a lot.

The couples up for results are Chelsea and Mark along with Kendra and Louis. I hate Mark, but that's not news. Kendra is still harping on the fact that she has to be romantic with Louis. We get it. He's gay, and he's not Hank. Get over it. Kendra really did get overwhelmed by the smoke, which was redonk, and it affected her whole routine. So who is safe? I don't know what happened up on stage, but they are all cracking up while they wait to hear. Chelsea and Mark are safe. Kendra and Louis are in jeopardy.

What do the pros think about the competition? Cheryl is impressed with how Ralph moves, given his age. Other pros feel the same way about Kirstie. Anna can't believe that Chelsea can keep up with Mark's choreography. Karina likes Romeo's swagger. Wendy and Sugar Ray are stronger on performance than technique. Well, Wendy's not strong with either, really. Chelsie is impressed with how much fun Hines is having. So they all agree that the field is close. I learned nothing from that segment. Thanks, producers.

OneRepublic is back to sing that one song that's not "Apologize" [It's fittingly "All the Right Moves." - Zach] and the troupe is out to perform. I'm surprised that they only let the troupe do one song. I thought I was supposed to get to know each of them personally. How can I do that when they're only on for one segment?

Moving on to hear more about Chris, Kirstie and Ralph. Chris danced for his mom and it was actually touching, especially since I think he was the first one to trot out the parent story. Ralph, whatever. It was what it was. We get to hear Maks and Kirstie's audio during their fall; this is what Brooke was trying to show them earlier when they wouldn't talk to her. Right when Maks falls, Kirstie asks if he's okay and what happened, and then he holds up a finger like "wait one" and they continue. At the end of the dance, Kirstie assumes it was her fault and asks what she did wrong. I thought Kirstie was mad about her scores, but on rewatch, it's possible that she was shocked they were so high after they fell. In the confessional, Maks assures Kirstie that it wasn't her fault, and then they cackle that Maks pulled her down because he wasn't going to fall by himself. Ralph and Karina are safe, as are Kirstie and Maks. Chris and Cheryl are in jeopardy.

Okay, so three couples are in jeopardy: Wendy and Tony, Kendra and Louis, and Chris and Cheryl. WE don't have to wait long to hear that Kendra and Louis are safe. Kendra is deadpan. She totally has bitchface. Tom emphasizes that Wendy and Chris are not necessarily the bottom two, and then we have to hear what Len thinks. He thinks that Wendy overcame her fears and came back strong after a bad first week. Len was surprised at Chris's improvement over the first episode. I am going to be pissed if Chris goes home ahead of Wendy, but I feel like they would have been teasing it as a shocking elimination if that were the case. Right? I'm just going to keep typing until Tom tells us who's going home. And...it's Wendy and Tony. Well, that's right. I mean, who was worse? No one.

Brooke asks Wendy if her constant travel affected her abilities to rehearse. Wendy says that she did have a lot of travel, and she has a family, and a lot of other obligations, but she got to show off her goods. She admits that she's a black woman who can't even do the running man. You guys. I am SO GOOD at the running man. I was like Bobby Brown back in the day. "Every Little Step" was my jam. My friend Heather and I used to go to clubs and do that routine where we would go forward and hit our feet and then go back and we were working up to me boosting her into a back flip but we chickened out. Anyway. Wendy's gone, and instead of doing a final dance she goes into the audience and hugs people.
