Last night, for the first time, the couples got separate scores for technical and performance. Except a lot of them got identical scores in both areas, which kind of defeats the purpose of the dual scores, no? And the same people ended up on the top and bottom of the leaderboard. So as an experiment, it kind of flopped, if you ask me. I liked the idea, but the execution was poor. Which explains so much about this show.
Hey, Brooke isn't wearing a bandage dress for once! She has giant hair, though. They're getting right to the first set of results. The first couple that has been saved is... Chad and Cheryl. For some reason, Chad runs over and hugs Jake first, but then runs back and hugs Cheryl. Anna has a huge pout on her face for some reason. Does she know something we don't? And also coming back week are Jake and Chelsie, so I guess they don't have to suffer the red light again. I wouldn't swear to it, but I think Nicole is having a nip slip moment. It might be the shadow from her mic, though.
Len reviews last night's dances. Erin and Maks don't understand why their technical scores were so low, when she screwed up maybe two steps in the whole dance. Evan needed better footwork. Niecy wants to make it through so she can finally do a fast dance and shake her thing. Aiden is still repressing his emotions while Edyta is exposing her body more than ever. Nicole let nerves get the better of her, and she cries in the confessional. I'm sure they'll wring more and more drama out of that footage. Jake felt he was going great until he stumbled. Kate had a breakthrough, and actually had fun on the floor. Chad finally let his confidence show. Pam was sophisticated in addition to being sexy. And while Nicole and Evan remain on top of the leaderboard, the rest of the group is moving around and challenging the top two.
Len announces that the encore dance this week will be Pam and Damian. I kind of missed Pam's amazing split near the end of the dance. How can a woman in her... how old is Pam, anyway? I was going to say early 40s, but I just realized I have no idea if that's right. To IMDb! Okay, she's claiming 43, but I wouldn't be surprised if she shaved a few years off back in the Tool Time era. Then again, her face is a perfect example of why sunscreen is so important. She could do a PSA.
On the way into commercial, there's a fake movie trailer for a horror film where Bruno is a Jason Voorhees type stalking the celebs. Kate does a fake scream that is more emotion than she has shown in any one of her dance routines. I wonder how many takes that required.
Sade! She's still around? Oof. She's kind of lost her voice. I don't know if this is just a bad night for her or if she's really lost it. Anyway, Chelsie and Damian do a rumba to her song, and it's nice to see the new pros get a chance to show off their skills. I hadn't noticed it before, since I'm usually so busy looking at Pam's boobs and all, but Damian has a bit of the Mark Ballas hammy face. He needs to tone that down.
After a recap of the scoring from last night, Tom and Brooke are ready to reveal another safe couple. And it is... Evan and Anna. Erin looks really, really nervous.
There's a clip package of the pros dancing as kids. Anna was an adorable 7-year-old whose parents were both professional dancers. Damian didn't start dancing until he was ten, which is apparently a late start. Chelsie hated dancing, and would cry before every lesson. It seems kind of cruel that her parents made her keep going, doesn't it? Maks discovered that he was horrible at every other form of the arts (acting, singing), so he took up dancing. Derek, Julianne and Mark grew up together in London, and they used to win all the trophies in all the youth competitions. When Edyta was 12, she wore the same revealing costumes that she does now. Apparently, the world of ballroom dance is super-violent, as they all talk about throwing elbows, scratching and punching the other couples on the floor. Who knew? Anyway, tonight Mark is choreographing a dance for some of the up-and-coming youth.
And here they are, including the couple that won the kids' competition a few seasons back. There are five couples doing a paso doble, which then morphs into a more modern take. At one point, I think they start doing the dance from Can't Buy Me Love. Anyway. It was okay, and nice exposure for these kids, but nothing to write home about. There's another fake movie trailer going into commercial, this one for ChaChaBlanca. I'm sure you can fill in the blanks. And then coming back, they have a parody of Rambo starring Tony as Glambo, and it actually made me like Tony a little bit because he was parodying himself. Tom announces that it's movie week, so suddenly all the fake trailers make sense. He may have said that earlier and I fast-forwarded through it.
Time to reveal two more safe couples. They are... Nicole and Derek, as well as Pamela and Damian. Neither of those are too surprising. Backstage, Jake and Chelsie talk about how they know what it's like to be in the bottom two, and their hearts go out to those who haven't been declared safe yet. Brooke finally gets around to asking Nicole what was up with her breakdown. Nicole says that she was upset with herself and her performance, not the judges. She should have said that last night, to avoid people thinking she was a prima donna.

The Macy's Stars of Dance performance this week features a prima ballerina and some violin duo. This should be... interesting? As much as I like ballroom, I don't know that I tuned in to see ballet. But maybe it won't be traditional ballet. Yeah, definitely not. There is breakdancing and front tucks. And rapping. That's one way to make the arts more accessible. It's different, that's for sure. And watchable.
Sade returns to sing "Sweetest Taboo" while four men dance in a sort of hip-hop/jazz fusion. It's quite good, but Sade has definitely lost her voice. Which is kind of sad, although apparently she's still making a living at performing.
Brooke talks to Kate backstage, who admits that it was the first time she had fun out there. Gee, it only took a month. She also uses her little girl voice to tell Tony that she loves him and is glad he was patient. Gah, she's so gross. She's sent back out and there is a light smattering of applause from the other contestants, which tells you everything you need to know. Then Chad hits on Cheryl some more, and I love him, but it's getting old.
Who else is safe? That would be... Erin and Maks. They look really relieved. They were clearly worried. So it's either going to be Niecy and Louis, Aiden and Edyta, or Kate and Tony. Another fake movie trailer bumper parodies James Bond with "Double O-chocinco" with a quick tag for Pamela Anderson in the sequel as "Jaymes Blonde." I think that just got greenlit by a studio somewhere.
So out of the three remaining couples, who is safe? Kate and Tony. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! There aren't enough O's in the world for me to express my feelings about that, especially if Niecy goes home. Then again, I could have voted if I felt so strongly. Tom is quick to point out that these are not necessarily the bottom two, and then asks Len what he thinks about these two couples. Len thinks Niecy is fun and bubbly, and Aiden is charming, so it will be a loss either way. Note that he didn't say that either of them were talented dancers.
So who is going home? After a looooong pause, Tom announces that it's Aiden and Edyta. Kate acts like she's really sad about it. Meanwhile, Aiden has got to be thinking, "Are you SERIOUS? Kate gets to stay?" Aiden tells Brooke that last night he had the best time dancing he's ever had. Tom points out that they were given a standing ovation, which doesn't always happen when someone gets voted out. After a clip package showing Aiden and Edyta's greatest hits, they take their final turn on the dance floor. I notice that they didn't ask Aiden if he had anything to say to his partner, and same with Edyta. Hmm. Did they not do that in the past weeks, either? Or just this week? Oh, after the clip package, they do let Aiden get a little choked up about how he feels about his partner. Poor Edyta. I hope she gets a great partner season.
