S02E19

Everything this show's been setting up starts to come together, when Chuck and Sarah find Chuck's dad, Scott Bakula. They bring him home, and he spouts crazy stuff about how he invented plasma TVs and touchscreen technology, but that a guy named Roark stole all of his ideas. Roark is an evil Bill Gates-type played by Chevy Chase. When Chuck flashes on a Roark flyer, he tells General Redhead, who sends him in to get a job there -- as himself: Stanford grad Chuck Bartowski. He gets the job, and when Sarah and Casey can't stop some big virus-infested software release, he steals the launch button from Roark. It's hilarious, because Lester and Jeff -- in the audience -- help Chuck, who's eventually knocked down by the young dweeb who hired him at Roark in the first place. All of this leads Chuck home, where he reads Orion's Intersect comic books, until his dad comes in and tells him if he sabotaged the Roark job for him, he shouldn't have. What Chuck quickly realizes is that Orion's Intersect schematics line up perfectly over Roark's headquarters. He tells Sarah and Casey Roark has an Intersect, but they don't believe it without proof. So, Chuck suits up in Casey's gear to go it alone. He gets caught by Casey, tranqs him, and heads to Roark.

Chuck's dad's already there, trying to get Chuck's job back. Chuck soon finds out his dad's much more than he seems, too. In fact, he's Orion, and he planned everything to go down this way. They go inside and find Intersect 2.0, which is supposed to remove the Intersect from Chuck's brain. But when they try to do it, Roark comes in to take Orion away to build super computers for him. He orders Chuck killed, but Chuck's dad says he'll do whatever Roark wants as long as Chuck lives. They let him live. Chuck's dad tells him that he was wrong about Chuck's handlers: He can trust them. Then they take him away. And, just when Ellie's coming around to not being mad at her dad, he's gone again. So Awesome makes her the pancakes for dinner that her dad promised the first time he left. Ellie tells Chuck she's sorry she wanted him to find their dad, because now she realizes he's never going to change and she doesn't need him. Chuck tells her not to count him out yet, and we close on a scene of Scott Bakula working on the Intersect. Who knew this show could do serious so well?

Previously: Chuck found out Orion could remove the Intersect. Then he met a computerized Orion, who gave him schematics for the new Intersect that Chuck needs to find to get his old life back. Chuck promised Ellie he'd find their dad to walk her down the aisle. With Sarah's help, he showed up at his dad's trailer at the end of the last episode. But we didn't see him (unless we watched the stupid preview).

Chuck and Sarah sit in the trailer while Chuck's dad digs in his fridge. His face is conveniently hidden in and then behind the fridge as Sarah and Chuck banter about how weird this is. She thinks his dad seemed happy to see him, but Chuck thinks it was more surprise. Also, the last time Chuck saw his dad, he was sort of crazy. His dad walks up and hands Sarah and Chuck their coffee, and it's Scott Bakula. He and Chuck catch up a little bit. Chuck tells him he went to Stanford, and his dad tells Sarah that Chuck was always a genius. Chuck tells his dad about Ellie, and her marriage to "an Awesome guy." He asks if Scott will walk her down the aisle. Bakula thinks it's not a good idea, but Chuck pushes, and tells Bakula he's seen what he can't do. He apologizes, but Bakula says it's okay, because he left, so now Chuck's mad. Chuck tells Scott he just wants him to come home for Ellie. Bakula likes that Chuck would do this; it makes him happy Chuck and Ellie at least had each other. He goes to pack to go with them. Chuck tells Sarah he's glad they found his dad for Ellie. Sarah points out it's for Chuck, too. Chuck says maybe he's not as crazy as he remembers. But then Scott comes in, looks out the trailer window and says maybe they should wait till dark, since the "rat bastards" are tracking his every move. Chuck and Sarah look at each other, all: "Nope. Still crazy."

At the apartment, Ellie's showing Awesome ties for him to wear at the rehearsal dinner. Chuck and Bakula walk in, and Chuck says hi. Ellie turns, says hi to Chuck quickly, and goes back into her nonstop tie talk. Then she realizes who she just saw, stops talking, turns around, and says nothing. Until... "Pancakes. You said you were going to make pancakes." She tears up and walks out of the room. Bakula's all, "That went well." Chuck hands him the luggage and leaves the room, giving Bakula and Awesome a chance to meet. Basically, Bakula hands Awesome his bag when Awesome reaches to shake his hand, then he compliments Awesome's "big TV." That's not a euphemism.

In the bedroom, Chuck apologizes for not calling to warn her he was bringing their dad home. She says it's not Chuck's fault; she's just mad at their dad. Then she actually says, "Crazy old dad; aren't you mad at him?" I don't know why, but the way she says "Crazy old dad" is totally odd to me. It seems a strange phrasing anyway, and she says it like it's cute, not like it's something that would cause anger. Chuck's not mad. He realized he would rather forgive than hate. Ellie thinks hating him is easier, but Chuck says he's all they have left and this is their last chance at being a family. She says, "Let's go." It's a very sweet scene between these two, and I'm glad we got it. Especially after last week, when she felt betrayed by him because of the bachelor party.

In the living room, Ellie tells Bakula she guesses she was just surprised to see him. He's sure she was. Chuck and Awesome sit there awkwardly. Bakula tells Ellie she looks just like her mother. Ellie apologizes to Awesome for leaving them alone like that, but Awesome says it's fine, adding that her dad was just explaining their TV to him. Bakula jumps in, saying he was telling "Dev" that he practically invented their TV. He came up with plasma crystals in high school, but never saw a dime for it. He also invented touch-screen technology. Chuck and Ellie clearly think their dad is a loon, so they try to change the subject with pizza-ordering talk. Bakula says he went to school with Ted Roark (someone famous, judging by Chuck and Awesome's reactions), who stole all his ideas. As he talks about Roark releasing a new software this week, Bakula shuffles papers and sets some down a little too perfectly on the coffee table. Bakula gets up to get touch-screen schematics to share, and Chuck flashes on a flier Bakula left on the table. It's about "NextExpo," which is apparently where Roark's unveiling his new software. The flash is Fulcrum-related. While Bakula's away from the coffee table, Ellie says she's really trying, but he's obviously as crazy as they remember.

At Castle, lots of pictures of Chevy Chase are on monitors as General Redhead talks about Chuck's flash on the flier. She says that the CIA thinks Roark's latest software might contain some virus that could cause irreparable damage to the world's computers. They can't contact Roark and let them know, for fear of alerting whoever's bad inside Roark. Instead, Chuck's going in as a new employee to see if he flashes on anything or anyone. His interview is in an hour. General Redhead shuts herself off, and Sarah asks if Chuck's okay with this, considering his dad went to school with Roark. Casey asks, much less sensitively, if Chuck's daddy issues are going to jeopardize the mission. Chuck says he's fine. He's dreamed of working for Roark since college -- more than Apple or Microsoft. Though he thinks it might not qualify if he goes in as a janitor. Sarah laughs and says he's going in as himself: Chuck Bartowski, Stanford grad and computer wiz. She tells him he's "perfectly qualified to go in as himself," and you can see how happy this makes him.

Suited up, Chuck arrives at a big, high-tech-looking building. He's greeted by a chipper guy in an office who's wearing a dark gray shirt under a tight black vest and black scarf. It's too much in the way of making him seem like a total dweeb who's trying too hard, but I think Chuck's too nervous for his fake interview to notice. He tells the guy he loves it here, and the guy offers him a seat on an ergonomic ball. It's sort of a disaster, as Chuck can't balance and so takes awhile to stabilize. It's noisy and awkward, and Sarah and Casey clearly are wondering from their positions in the van what's going on. The scarved dweeb is a Stanford man, so he instantly likes Chuck. He's only been out of school two years, though he says that's eons in the computer game. Chuck tells him about his job at the Buy More, closing by saying he gets to work with many unusual personalities.

Cut to Jeff and Lester running oddly through the Buy More, basically stalking Big Mike. They jump in front of him and show him a NextExpo flier. They think it will be important to be there, so he tells them to send Chuck. They say Chuck's not here, and they'd like to go. Big Mike approves it, and tells them to have fun hanging out at the weirdo convention. They're stoked!

Chuck's telling Scarfy the Dweeb that since college, he's been stuck in a life that he can't really see a way out of. Scarfy tells him this interview is a good first step. He offers Chuck the job, and then has to literally pull Chuck up off the ball. He tells Chuck they'll work on his ball skills. As he gives Chuck a tour, Chuck's excited about the bathroom, lobby, and everything else. Chuck rounds a corner and comes face to face with Chevy Chase (Roark). They shake hands, and Roark tells Chuck never to wash his hand. Chuck says he never will, sir, but Roark tells him no sirs around here, joking that only applies to a woman in his group. He's one of those guys who thinks he's funny because everyone laughs when he tells a bad joke, but he's really not. [I didn't even get the joke. Did he mean only the woman has to call him "sir," or they only call the woman "sir"? - Zach] As the dweeb's leading Chuck out of the building, Jeff and Lester are apparently camping out for NextExpo. They see Chuck accepting his ID badge and orientation binder from afar and wonder if Morgan knows Chuck's cheating on him with Roark. They call Morgan to tell him. He pretends he knew Chuck was interviewing there, but he's not fooling anyone.

Chuck and Sarah are arriving back at the apartment complex, and Chuck says he knows it's not real, but he's excited for this job. She tells him to remember it's just an assignment. He knows, but he wished he'd gotten a job like this sooner, and maybe he wouldn't have been the Intersect, and then when his dad came back, he'd be doing something better than working at the Buy More. Sarah reminds him that he is, and they walk inside. Ellie, Awesome, Bakula and Morgan are sitting around the table. Bakula asks where Chuck's been, and Chuck says he's been working. Ellie toasts to family, about how grateful they are to have him home. He returns the toast, to Ellie and Awesome, hoping they're happy together. He asks when the bachelor party is, and Ellie immediately stiffens. Awesome says he had it already, but doesn't want to talk about it. So Morgan says he has a toast: to Chuck's new job. Chuck looks shocked. Ellie wonders what's up. Morgan says Lester tells him that Chuck's leaving his friends and the Buy More behind to work for Roark. Ellie thinks it's amazing, but Bakula looks hurt and asks if Chuck's going to work for the man who stole everything from him.

Chuck shows up for work as NextExpo's getting started. He greets a geeked-up Sarah and Casey mockingly, but Sarah explains they're going in to retrieve the source of the operating system so that Roark can't release the virus-infected software. Casey says it will take some time, though, so Chuck needs to keep an eye on Roark in case anything goes wrong. Chuck tries to protest, but Casey just says, "Have a nice first day." Chuck goes in, and Casey and Sarah sneak off.

Chuck enters the auditorium where they'll apparently launch the software. Jeff and Lester see Chuck and try to wave at him, but he is flashing on a Fulcrum agent behind them, which to them looks like he's looking right at them and ignoring them. They say he's already forgotten them. Poor Jester. Chuck calls Sarah and Casey to tell them he flashed on a Fulcrum computer terrorist. At the apartment, Bakula turns on a live feed to watch the launch, since it's Chuck's first day. Roark's introduced and welcomes everyone. He makes a lot of lame jokes about how great he is, then says the operating system, RIOS, will change the world. Sarah and Casey are encountering very tough security [The touch screens talk in Chevy Chase's voice. Creepy! - Z], and even set off an alarm, so they tell Chuck he has to stop the release. He doesn't want to get fired, but Casey reminds him it's not a real job. So Chuck jumps on stage and yells, "Wait!" Roark asks what the hell he's doing. Ellie tells Bakula that Chuck must have gotten promoted, which is a totally cute Ellie thing to think. Chuck whispers to Roark about the CIA thinking the software's been infected with a virus. Roark tells Chuck he sounds crazy, and he doesn't believe him. He moves on, so Chuck grabs his launch button and runs. People boo him, but Lester and Jeff cheer for him, and even help him knock out some of the guys chasing him. At home, Sarah yells "No, Chuck!" as Bakula cheers him on. Chuck's ultimately knocked out by the dweeb who hired him. He gives the launch button back to Roark, who launches the thing. The world doesn't end. Just like Y2K.

Awesome comes home to a freaked-out Ellie, wondering if Chuck's in jail and if he would get a phone call if that were the case. She's going to call 411, and ask for the county jail. Awesome says he just worked an 18-hour shift, and she should slow down. She explains that Chuck jumped on stage and attacked his new boss. Awesome wonders why he would do that, and Ellie doesn't know, though she thinks Bakula had something to do with it. He's in the kitchen, where Ellie yells at him that he obviously put Chuck up to it. He says he didn't, but Roark's a loser who isn't worthy of Chuck. Ellie says he doesn't get it; that this is the opportunity Chuck's waited ten years for. Bakula tells her to trust him that Chuck knows what he's doing, but she clearly isn't ready for "trust" with her father. Awesome tells her that maybe her dad's right and Chuck knows what he's doing. She looks at him in shock, and then tells him she's sure that Chuck just forgot this all happened, just like his bachelor party. She apologizes for being so mad, and goes to take a walk. Awesome tries to stop her, but Bakula tells him to let her walk.

After she's gone, Bakula offers Awesome a drink. He's having none of that, since last time he drank it did not go well. He asks Bakula what he should do to make things right with Ellie, but Bakula says he's the wrong guy to ask. Awesome points out she's his daughter, but he says he can't take credit for her. The only thing Ellie owes him are some well-deserved trust issues. He tells Awesome his advice is to not walk out on your kids when you've promised them pancakes for dinner; they tend to take it badly. My addendum: Don't do it no matter what you've promised for dinner, or even if you haven't promised anything. Bakula tells Awesome he's a real straight arrow, and Awesome says he used to be before the bachelor party. He calls himself a jackass, but Bakula says that's not why Ellie's mad. She just doesn't want him to turn into her dad, which seems pretty unlikely. He pours Awesome a drink, and they toast to straight arrows.

Chuck walks into the Buy More, looks around at his miserable life, turns and leaves. He goes home and starts reading his Orion comic books. They do this stupid thing where Chuck's asking Orion questions in his head: Do you want me to build an Intersect? Or find one? How can I use these cards to find it? His dad knocks. Chuck tries to say he was busy, but Bakula asks for a minute. He says that Ellie thinks Chuck did what he did at Roark for him, and if it's true he'll never forgive himself. He says he ruined every good thing that ever happened to him: his job, his family, everything. He won't stand by and let the same thing happen to Chuck; that's a torch he'd rather not pass. He grabs the Roark Industries orientation folder and moves it closer to Chuck, saying that if working for Roark will make him happy, he should do it, and not let Bakula's past destroy Chuck's future. Chuck says he misses getting advice from him. Bakula says his minute's up, and lets Chuck get back to what he was doing. Chuck picks up the Roark folder, which has a map on it that matches the schematics of the Intersect! Total jackpot. You'd almost think Chuck's dad knew what he was doing when he set it there or something.

Chuck's telling Casey and Sarah Roark has an Intersect, but they're not buying it. Casey asks what Chuck flashed on, but Chuck won't say anything other than that he didn't technically flash on anything. He says it makes sense, though, because Fulcrum still needs a supercomputer, and only someone like Roark could do that. Chuck wonders what if RIOS is a Trojan horse, designed to steal stuff from anybody, everybody. Casey says if Chuck thought this up out of the blue, General Redhead will laugh in their faces. He says the apple doesn't fall too far from the crazy tree. Chuck appeals to Sarah, but she can't do anything, either, without proof. She tells him how clear General Redhead's orders are.

Chuck goes to Castle alone, and goes all CIA spy, in Casey's gear: black clothes, boots, bullet-proof vest and two guns, which he bangs together dramatically. As he's leaving, Casey snatches the Intersect schematics from him and tells him how cute he is in that outfit. Chuck wants his plans back, but Casey wants to know what they are first. Chuck tells him they're designs for the Intersect, not stolen from Roark but given to Chuck by Orion. Chuck thinks Orion wanted him to break in, but Casey wants him to take off his gear before he breaks his neck. Chuck grabs the plans and points a gun at Casey, who tells Chuck he's entering a world of pain. Chuck says he wants the Intersect out of his head, and asks if Casey's going to help him or not. Casey asks if that's a tranq gun. Chuck looks at it and says it is. Casey's insulted that Chuck doesn't have the common courtesy to threaten him with a real gun, and tells him to put the toy down. Chuck shoots Casey, who wobbles a bit, but heads toward Chuck. He shoots again. Same thing. And again. Same thing. But now he's at Chuck, and has taken the tranq gun away. So Chuck pulls a tranq dart off his bandolier and stabs Casey in the neck with it. Casey says he's going to kill Chuck when he wakes up and then passes out. Chuck runs off saying he's sorry.

Chuck sneaks in to Roark when someone leaves. He's totally conspicuously dressed in his spy gear in a brightly lit hall. He hears someone shouting and ducks inside a room. It's his dad, who's being dragged out screaming that he's not leaving the building until his son gets his job back, because Roark screwed him, but he won't get to screw his son, too. One of the guys (the Fulcrum one Chuck flashed on in the auditorium) calls someone on a radio and asks what to do with him. The other end of the radio says to bring him in and he'll deal with him in private. One of the guys punches Bakula, so Chuck looks at his tranq guns, leaves the room he's hiding in and shoots a bunch of times. [Dramatic! - Z] All five guys surrounding Bakula stand there, and then fall to the ground. Chuck tells his dad they have to go, and he'll explain later. For now, all he can say is that he's not who he thinks he is. The Mummy walks in with a gun pointed, saying it's good to see both of them again. Bakula tells Chuck not to worry, because he's not who Chuck thinks he is, either. The Mummy tells them to put their hands up. When Chuck's dad puts his up, we see that it's an Orion-style computerized arm. He punches some buttons and closes the sliding metal door right on The Mummy. While the Mummy is pinned, Bakula knocks The Mummy out. He asks Chuck if he's coming. Wide-eyed, Chuck follows, saying, "Oh my god. You're Orion." Bakula: "We should hurry."

At Castle, Sarah pulls a tranq out of Casey, who wakes up. She asks where Chuck is. He thinks for a second and then says, "In a world of pain." Chuck's telling his dad he can't believe he invented the Intersect. Bakula says he only invented the really cool stuff. Bakula can understand how this might complicate a few things, as he continues to lead Chuck using his arm, which apparently comes equipped with GPS. Chuck's all, "Complicate?!" since he saw him explode in a helicopter. Bakula sees how he could have given Chuck that impression, but he's had to die quite a few times. It's one of the perils of being Orion. It's not what he wanted, but when he saw what the government was going to do with the Intersect, he had to run. And then he knew the government wouldn't be the only ones looking for him, so he had to stay away from Ellie and Chuck. He opens a door and leads Chuck into a computer-filled room.

Chuck asks if he was protecting Chuck and Ellie. Bakula says he knew he'd have to spend his life hiding from the Intersect, but never dreamed it would find Chuck. He imagines it's a curse having those secrets trapped in his head. That's why he came back, and let Sarah find him. It's his fault. Fulcrum's after both of them now. As he says this, Chuck flashes back to (different than flashing on, of course) Orion typing, "Because I'm Orion." Then on Orion's computer face. Then on he and Sarah driving up to the trailer. Then on his dad laying the flier out strategically. Then on the Roark folder. Chuck says Bakula wanted him to flash on the schematics, and wanted Chuck to break in, so asks why he didn't just tell him who he was and what he wanted. Bakula wonders if he would have trusted him after ten years. Chuck wouldn't have. They're at the door pad that stumped Sarah and Casey. Bakula tells Chuck to flash on the code. Chuck says it doesn't work like that; unless it's in there, he can't do it. Bakula says he can. He would know, since he designed the computer. He tells Chuck to flash for the very last time. Chuck looks at it intensely, and flashes on the code. He punches it in and Bakula awesomely says, "Aces, Charles," and they go inside the room.

The room is very sterile and white with blue lights. So it looks vaguely like the Fortress of Solitude. There's a tiny, little, bright, glowy box spinning inside a cylinder, which Bakula says is the Intersect. Chuck can't believe that's it, but Bakula casually says "2.0. The greatest thing I ever created. Except you and your sister." Bakula has to make some software modifications, so he makes transparent computer screens come up, and starts typing. He tells Chuck that, in theory, the Intersect should be able to take out information. He's going to flash some images at Chuck that will cancel out the ones in his brain. Chuck's all, "Wait. Are you saying you're going to overwrite my brain?" Bakula says that's a good way of putting it. Bakula's ready, so Chuck reminds him he needs glasses. Bakula wishes Chuck luck and pushes the button.

A beeping starts, and Bakula says it isn't working. A door opens and Roark says no, it doesn't work, but he's sure Bakula can fix that. He remembers Orion always having a way with machines, while he always had a way with the girls. Doubtful, since he's at least ten years older than Bakula, but whatever. Maybe the ladies liked older-than-average students. Roark is mocking Bakula, and Chuck doesn't like it at all. Roark says he's been looking for Bakula for a long time and that the years have been unkind. Um, dude, look in a mirror. If you're supposed to be the same age, the years have only been unkind to Roark. But he offers Bakula a good moisturizer. Roark says to put Bakula on the helicopter and kill the CIA agent, gesturing at Chuck. Bakula says that Chuck is actually his son. Roark fakes congratulations, saying he had no idea. Then, "Kill the son." Bakula says he'll build anything Roark wants, including an Intersect for Fulcrum, but only if Chuck walks away from here. The Mummy says he'll build it either way. Bakula says his son walks away. Roark says okay, he's not a monster. He adds his only legitimately funny line, "Well, I'm a little bit of a monster." (By the way, I'm not criticizing Chevy Chase. I think he's playing Roark perfectly; he's supposed to be an idiot windbag who thinks he's funny, but isn't. Which is funny in its own way, but Roark isn't funny. Chevy is a little.)

Roark heads to the helicopter. [I love that he calls "shotgun." - Z] Bakula comes over to say goodbye to Chuck. He tells him to take care of Ellie and himself, that he can do this without Bakula. Chuck doesn't want to lose his dad again so soon. And neither do I, now that I know how awesome Bakula is (I didn't watch much Quantum Leap; I know that is a serious hole in my TV knowledge.) Chuck says he's not going to leave Bakula, as Bakula opens the door to let him out. Bakula asks if Chuck remembers him telling him not to trust his handlers. Casey and Sarah run up then with guns pointed at the bad guys waiting to take Bakula away. Bakula says he may have been wrong about them. Of course he was. The Mummy, gun pointed back, along with the whole crew of bad guys, says that if Chuck's going to walk, he better do it now. Chuck lunges forward and screams, but Casey and Sarah hold him back, as The Mummy closes the door. I did not know this show could do the dramatic and sad this well, but I was totally teary.

At Castle, General Redhead TV explains to Casey, Sarah and Chuck that their raid of Roark Instruments didn't yield the Intersect or Stephen Bartowski. She says that Fulcrum's possession of Orion poses a huge security threat. Chuck asks if she means Fulcrum's possession of his father. She promises that no one at the CIA knew his father's secret identity, and that they will entrust finding him to their best team. Chuck yells that they are the best team. Casey can't believe he's saying this, but Chuck's right. Sarah disagrees, saying that they can't put Chuck back in the field now that Fulcrum knows he's Orion's son; it's too dangerous. Chuck says that as soon as his dad finishes Roark's Intersect, he's worthless, obsolete (how, exactly? Won't the government still need an Intersect?), and that Fulcrum wins. He says all that matters now is getting his father back, and General Redhead needs him to do that. She says the assignment is his, provided his personal entanglements don't interfere.

Ellie arrives home in her scrubs to pancakes and orange juice on the dining room table. I must have allergies or something, because my eyes are watering again. She cutely and happily calls for her dad, but finds Awesome in the kitchen. He tells her he doesn't know how to tell her this, but he thinks her dad split; his stuff is gone, but maybe he'll come back for the wedding. She tearily says no, he won't. Awesome tells her if it's any consolation (and I think that it is), he's not going anywhere, ever, no matter how bad things get, because that's what married people do. She's won over and hugs and kisses him. He tells her that in 50 years, they'll laugh about his bachelor party. She says they won't, and he agrees they might not.

Chuck walks in, and Ellie rushes over to ask if he's okay. I had completely forgotten this is the first time she's seen him since watching him screw up his new job, so she's still worried about that. He says he's fine, and that only his career was injured. Ellie becomes the strong big sister, telling Chuck that their dad left. She says she yelled at him about the job. Chuck tells her it's not her fault, but she says it's her fault for asking Chuck to find their dad in the first place. She says she thought she needed him to walk her down the aisle, that he would somehow be different than the guy who left them. She says she expected too much from him. Chuck tells her not to count him out yet. She half-smiles, admiring how forgiving and loving Chuck is.
