We open in the lab instead of in a crime scene. For a second. And then like five shots later, we're in an SUV with Brennan and Booth. Why show the lab at all? Confusing. Booth and Brennan are looking at the exterior of the Jeffersonian, and Booth asks with exasperation where "the kid" is. Did they get married and have a kid? What in the holy hell is going on here?
Cut back to the lab, where Zack is talking to a young blonde co-worker while Jack and Angela watch from afar. Jack explains that Zack slept with Blondie a month ago and now she won't call him. Jack tries to make small talk with Angela about their job, but they both realize that their jobs are boring and what they really want is a murder investigation. Okay, if their jobs are so boring normally, until this whole investigation thing came up recently, why did they spend all that time in school learning how to do it? Angela says that Booth and Brennan are waiting for Zack to go out on an investigation, and Jack yells to Zack that he needs to leave immediately. Blondie doesn't pause for a second before running off. Zack says that Blondie told him to take a hint, and he doesn't get it, because apparently he's been brain damaged. He says, "I understand the individual words but I do not comprehend their meaning." Okay, is he maladjusted socially, or is he a robot? Because, seriously. And also, did you know people that are good at science and work in labs are bad at talking to other humans? There's something you don't see on TV every day. Give me a break. Jack and Angela rush Zack out the door, where he joins Booth and Brennan in the SUV.
While they drive, Booth explains that there is a dead body in a prep school out in the sticks. Zack won't stop talking about Blondie, and Brennan wants to continue with her "how to be a human" lessons. I think there should only be one person who has no social skills per series. Because having both of them in one car is pretty annoying. And annoying isn't really what you want in a lead character, I don't think. Booth takes his sunglasses off, although in a scene we saw him just put them on, and enough with the sunglasses already because it's distracting. And also, Zack has on a maroon velvet blazer and very feathery hair, and it's all very '70s. Booth explains that there's a new sheriff at the crime scene, and she's okay, but the prep school has a lot of pull, so it's likely the sheriff will want them to take over the case. Booth asks them to follow his lead, because it will be a politically charged situation. Predictably, Zack and Brennan go right back to talking about their own issues, because they weren't listening. I would just pull over and drop them off right there. Booth suggests that they all take on "quiet meditation," and puts his sunglasses back on.
They arrive at the prep school and there's some bad voice-overs about all the security, and Booth explains yet again that it's a very prestigious (read: expensive) school. A guy stops the SUV and asks to see ID from everyone inside, and they comply. Zack says that it reminds him of his old school, and Booth makes a crack about how removed it is from the real world, like, do you get that Booth went to public school and he LIKED IT? And it doesn't make him feel inadequate at all? And he's just as smart as anyone who went to private school? I hope you got all that, because they won't mention it again. Or they will, but only about eleventy-hundred times. The security guy says he'll show them to the crime scene, and in fact they can't just head out by themselves. Booth reads the Latin inscription nearby, and both Brennan and Zack immediately translate for him: "I carry with me all my things." That seems like kind of a strange motto for a school. Is it a school or an ecotourism vacation? Also, did you see how Booth didn't know Latin because he went to (gasp) public school? Just checking.
At the crime scene, Booth greets the sheriff, who seems quite pleased to see him. He also meets the school's head of security and the headmaster. Brennan just wants to see the remains, and the sheriff leads her there. The sheriff says that they worked together on a case last year, but Brennan doesn't remember her. Booth advises Brennan to be nice to locals and remember their names. They finally approach the location, and Brennan looks around for the remains. Booth points upward, and Brennan sees a body hanging in a tree. Booth asks if it's a student, and Security Head says it's a secure campus so it must be a student, staff, or faculty member. Well, if it's a secure campus, how did the kid die in the first place? A murder of crows are kind of, well, pecking at the body. I never thought I'd have the opportunity to say "murder of crows" in a recap, so that was cool. Brennan tells everyone that she's the one who gets to decide if this was a suicide or not. The headmaster wants to get the body down, and Booth tells him to step back. Zack takes photos while everyone else just looks at the body, which has clearly been up there for a while, and looks about like you might imagine under those circumstances. The crows peck around some more, and then…the head tumbles right off the neck, and Brennan catches it before it hits the ground. Although the head was decomposed enough to separate from the body, it doesn't like, squish or anything when Brennan clutches it like a football. Once the head is gone, the body falls to the ground, since it was being held up by a rope around the neck. Brennan examines the head, which is purple and has no eyeballs and maggots crawling on it, and welcome to my nightmare.
Back at the Jeff, Brennan says that she thinks the body belongs to a mid-adolescent male, and that the cheekbones tell her that he's not Caucasian. Angela speculates that he was Hispanic. Jack says he can figure out time of death based on insects, and thanks, but I think everyone in America has seen at least one episode of CSI at this point. Zack hands over a completely pristine necklace, like, did they wash it off, and wouldn't that be a bad idea, evidence-wise? Angela says that the kid was Catholic. Brennan sees something interesting and uses forceps to remove something from the ear -- it's a cochlear implant. Angela thinks that being Deaf would set a boy apart from others. Zack says that no one talked to him in high school and he didn't kill himself. Jack makes a crack, and Brennan gives him a glare.
Booth is questioning Headmaster and Head Security. They still don't know which of their students is missing, which is bullshit, if it's a boarding school. Just do room checks and report who's not there. Headmaster doesn't want to get the parents involved yet and says that the "higher-risk students" (those with bodyguards) are all accounted for. Head Security asks about adverse publicity, and Booth says it's not his problem. Head Security presses Booth to call it a suicide so that they can move on. Booth's phone rings, and it's Brennan. She says they'll have the body's identity within an hour, and tells him about the cochlear implant. Wouldn't the Headmaster know which of his students had a cochlear implant? There can't be that many. Brennan wants to continue talking, but Booth doesn't want to say anything in front of the Heads (Master and Security) so he starts talking nonsense. Brennan totally doesn't pick up on it, because again, she's socially maladjusted. Booth hangs up and says that he realizes that the school is famous for keeping its students safe, and that they won't be in trouble if it's a suicide in the way that they would if it's a murder. The Heads press Booth again to call it a suicide. Booth starts to leave, and then asks for a complete enrollment list. Head Security, who kind of looks like Jay Mohr doing his Christopher Walken impersonation, says that information is confidential, and Booth promises that he's good at keeping secrets.
Booth walks into the lab and right up onto the open-on-all-sides-and-above examination platform (which doesn't seem very secure, contamination-of-evidence wise), which causes an alarm to go off. Zack swipes a card to stop it. Brennan is all pissed that, when trying to avoid giving out information on the phone, Booth referred to her investigation as "boring details." Booth tries to explain why he said that and asks for his own card to avoid setting off alarms again. Brennan won't let the "boring details" thing go, and Zack reveals that they've identified the body as one "Nestor Olivos," son of the Venezuelan ambassador. Brennan says that his hyoid bone is broken, and Booth says that always happen in strangulation deaths. Zack says that's only true of adults; adolescents have flexible hyoids. Among other things. Booth asks if they're saying he was murdered. Brennan says she can't say one way or the other yet. Booth and Brennan's cell phones both ring at the same time, and they both answer them.
And I guess they were both getting calls from the FBI boss, but it's never really explained, and suddenly, they're both in the boss's office. Or maybe Brennan was getting a call from her boss, Dr. Goodman, since he's there as well. FBI Boss wants them to declare it a suicide, and admits that he's getting pressure from the school and other powerful, interested parties. Booth says he'd like it to be a murder, just so he can "shake things up" at the school. Way to take it personally, dude. Brennan says she won't do that just for Booth's personal edification. Dr. Goodman says that the evidence is "ambiguous at best," and FBI Boss tells them to reach a verdict, and soon, and he urges suicide. As a verdict, not an action to take. Booth thinks the whole thing stinks, and FBI Boss says that they can't investigate until they know it was a murder. Dr. Goodman points out that Catch-22 that they can't determine if it's a murder until they investigate. Brennan realizes that this whole thing is her call. She mulls it over, looks at Booth, and then declares that her official finding is that it was a homicide.
Booth and Brennan drive home from the meeting. Booth thanks Brennan for declaring it a murder, and Brennan says she just did it to buy time for her own investigation. She asks what his grudge is against private schools, and Booth says he doesn't like people who think that they're better than other people. So if he thinks he's better than the Heads, does that mean he hates himself? Brennan argues that some people are better than other people, and smarter, and it's a fact. They drop it, and Brennan asks what they're going to tell Nestor's parents. Booth says they'll tell them it's under investigation and they're sorry for the parents' loss. Booth makes a point of adding that they are sorry, because it's sad. Okay, I think Brennan is capable of knowing that death is sad, right? She points that out, and Booth says that she's bad with people, and that's a fact too. Brennan looks…sad.
Booth and Brennan inform Nestor's mom, the ambassador, that her son is dead, and give her an overview of the circumstances, promising more when they know it. Brennan hands over Nestor's necklace. Booth asks when they last heard from Nestor, and Mr. Olivos says that Nestor went to Nova Scotia with a classmate over the break, and sent them an email while he was there. Booth asks for a copy of it, and Brennan adds that it will help them determine when "the victim" died. Booth nudges her, and she changes "the victim" to "your son." Mr. Olivos says that nothing in the email suggested that Nestor was unhappy. Ambassador Olivos says that they'd like to take Nestor home, and they need to petition the church to have Nestor buried on consecrated ground. Another thing that will be tough to do if it's declared a suicide after all. Booth says that Brennan will determine when the body is released, and Brennan just stands there instead of giving an answer.
Back at the lab, Zack is still obsessing over Blondie. I don't know if any of you ever watched the show American Dreams, but Zack is a lot like Patty, except about a million times more annoying. Jack says that Zack must not have given Blondie an orgasm, or at least says that to the extent that anyone can on network television. See, it's cool to show people being shot and killed, or dead and decomposed bodies, but talk about women's orgasms and it's FCC fines for you! Zack is desperate for instructions, and Jack says that he doesn't want to talk about this with a co-worker. He advises Zack to find someone more "earthy." If only someone spicy and outspoken worked in the lab!
Booth and Brennan meet with the Heads and the school psychologist, who says that she can't reveal anything about her sessions with Nestor without a warrant or parental permission. She can say that he was "at extreme risk for suicide." He wasn't on antidepressants, though. The psychologist says that Nestor was "alienated by culture, by language, by his handicap." The Heads think it's obvious this was a suicide. Booth asks why no one noticed that Nestor was missing for two weeks. Head Security says that they thought he was vacationing with his roommate, and he had parental permission to do so. Brennan points out that Venezuela is unstable politically, and Head Security asks if she's really suggesting that Nestor was taken out by "some kind of Venezuelan hit squad." Headmaster again pushes for a suicide verdict, and Booth says they'll have to talk to Nestor's roommate. The Heads aren't pleased, but they know they have to comply.
Booth and Brennan go to a restaurant owned by Sid, played by Heavy D. I love Heavy D! I'm glad to see him working. You don't order at Sid's; he just brings you what he thinks you should eat. I would kind of love that restaurant. Apparently, Sid's is Booth's "little getaway," so he's none too happy when the rest of the Geek Squad shows up and crowds into the booth. Zack says that Nestor's bones were normal, not brittle. Angela reports that the grooves left in the tree branch were deeper than they should have been, based on his weight. Jack says that the insects that fed on Nestor's body were all indigenous to that tree, so Nestor died there ten to fourteen days earlier. With that yummy tidbit, Jack yells that he'll have "the seven-organ soup," and I didn't know such a thing existed, and now I'm kind of upset that I do. But a Google search shows no results, so maybe they're just trying to gross me out. My husband thinks he meant "seven bean soup," but no one corrects him. Anyway.
Zack says that Nestor didn't void, as a dying person normally would. They all start passing out photos of the body, at the dinner table. Come on. Jack says that there were lots of post-decomposition fluids, though. Zack says that birds ate Nestor's eyes and ears, and Jack wonders if the birds could have pecked at his throat and broken the hyoid. Brennan says that the injury wasn't postmortem. Angela brings up all the reasons why it could be suicide, and Booth disagrees. Brennan tells them about Booth's prejudice against private schools, and Jack says that everyone in the Geek Squad went to private school, and they're not criminals. Sid shows up and yells at them for having crime scene photos out in a restaurant. Brennan says that she got exactly what she wanted, and Jack is pleased with his seven-organ soup, even though it's not what Sid would have brought. Booth asks how Nestor sent an email seven days ago from Nova Scotia if he died eight to fourteen days ago.
So we're off to interview Nestor's roommate, Tucker, and his family in an interrogation room. The roommate, a dorky-looking kid in a sweater vest, says that Nestor joined him in Nova Scotia, and then said he wanted to go back to Venezuela. Tucker says that other kids thought that Nestor talked weird, and also thought it was weird that Nestor went to church every week. Yeah, weirdo! With your church-going! Tucker also says that Nestor didn't have a girlfriend. Booth thinks Tucker is lying, and tells him about the email Nestor sent to his parents from Nova Scotia when he was already dead. Tucker's parents urge him to come clean about any wrongdoing. Booth guesses that Tucker was covering for Nestor so that he could be with a girl, and Tucker admits that's what happened, but he was just sending an email, and wasn't involved in any other way.
Dr. Goodman escorts Ambassador Olivos into Brennan's office. She's brought a photo of Nestor in his altar boy outfit, and she hands Brennan a DVD to watch. It's a video of the day Nestor received his cochlear implant, and Ambassador Olivos says that the first thing Nestor heard was his mother's voice. Ambassador Olivos thinks that a child who received such a miracle would never commit suicide. She adds that the school promised her that they'd keep Nestor safe, and if they failed, they would try to cover it up. Brennan promises to find out the truth, and the Ambassador thanks her.
Angela uses the Magic Holograph Machine to determine that, no matter how she has Nestor jump from the tree, his hyoid doesn't break. She says that an additional two hundred pounds would be necessary to break the hyoid. Booth says that the guy would have to be about twenty feet tall to pull that off. Unless he was hanging from Nestor's back or something, but I guess they don't investigate that option, because the episode's more than halfway over, so no need to introduce another possibility.
Booth and Brennan decide to go through Nestor's room again, and as they head up the stairs in the dorm room, they see an older-than-a-student guy coming down. As soon as he spots Booth and Brennan, he turns and runs up the stairs. Not very suspicious or anything. Booth and Brennan follow him up the stairs, and the guy has ducked into Nestor's room, like that's not the most obvious hiding spot in the world. And also, the door is unlocked, which seems unlikely with an active investigation going on. Anyway, he tries to grab Brennan as she enters and she quickly dispatches him with a side kick, like someone has been doing her Tae Bo videos. Booth punches the guy out and then tosses his wallet to Brennan, who reports that the guy is Venezuelan Embassy security. Booth wonders why he ran away from them.
Booth and Brennan go to Ambassador Olivos's office, accompanied by Venezuelan Security Guy. The ambassador says that she asked Security Guy to go to Nestor's room to prove that an outsider could easily get into the dorm. The school told her that Nestor's death had to be a suicide because anything else was impossible. Security Guy points out that he was unable to escape undetected. He doesn't point out that he was caught by Booth and Brennan, by happenstance, and not by the school's security team. Brennan tells the ambassador that the school lied to her, and that Nestor's death has been ruled a homicide. The ambassador is called out of the room to deal with something. Security Guy says that he doesn't think Nestor was killed for political reasons, because the killer would have made a statement, not tried to make it look like a suicide.
Booth and Brennan go back to Nestor's room. Booth says that everyone says that Nestor was a loner who hung out in his room, so Brennan can use Nestor's room to learn more about his life. Brennan checks out Nestor's music. Booth finds a broken Mozart CD in the trash can and asks why Nestor threw it out. Because it's been snapped in half? Just guessing. They rush over to Nestor's CD collection on the shelves, which gives Booth a chance to show off his "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" theory on CD organization. Basically, he thinks that women alphabetize CDs, and men go with something more organic. He should see my CD collection, then. Maybe I'm a man and don't know it. Booth finds the case for the discarded CD, which contains a burned copy of the CD. Booth wonders why Nestor burned a copy of the CD, and Brennan says that it's actually a DVD.
Back at the lab, they watch the DVD, which appears to contain porn. Angela points out that the guy on the screen, currently making out with some chick in her bra, is Nestor. Zack thinks it's "pretty kinky stuff." Brennan starts barking out orders about finding out where and when it was shot. Booth asks for stills and a close-up of the girl's face. Jack belches really fakely and says that his seven-organ soup is repeating on him. I wouldn't even mention that stupid line except that it comes up again later. It repeats on us. After everyone leaves, Jack tells Zack that the sex they saw was not at all wild and kinky. Now I'm actually curious about what Zack and Blondie actually did.
Booth and Brennan take a still of the video to the Heads, who aren't surprised at all, and say that the kids at the school swap those kinds of tapes. Booth wants to see all of the tapes they've confiscated. The headmaster says no. Booth says he'll get a warrant, and Head Security says that they turn all confiscated tapes over to local law enforcement. Brennan asks if the girl in the tape was also a student there, and the Headmaster says that he thinks it's time to retain a lawyer. Now, he thinks that? Booth says that if the Heads don't answer his questions, he'll take them down to FBI headquarters in handcuffs. The Headmaster gives up the name of the girl: Camden Destry. That's a porn star name if I've ever heard one. Appropriately enough.
Booth and Brennan interview Camden and her mom in the interrogation room. Camden says that she knew Nestor, but they weren't romantically involved. Mrs. Destry thinks that Camden is too young to date seriously. Booth scoffs and turns on the video. Camden is shocked and asks where the tape came from. Booth says that he's tired of being lied to, and asks Camden again if she was romantically involved with Nestor. Camden starts crying and asks why Nestor would tape them together, and adds that she loved him.
Outside, Brennan accuses Booth of being insensitive. Booth goes on a rant about how the students of that school are all liars, and that now local law enforcement is involved in the cover-up. Brennan agrees that the whole thing is a mess, but there's no logical reason for murder. That kind of encapsulates the whole episode, actually. Way too much plot, here. The sheriff pulls up and parks behind them, and hands over a box full of the kids' sex tapes. Booth accuses her of not doing anything about the tapes because the Headmaster helped her get elected. The sheriff points out that there's nothing illegal about kids having sex. I think it depends on their ages.
Booth and Brennan watch the tapes together. Hot date! Brennan recognizes the woman in one of the tapes as Melody Destry, Camden's mother. She asks if the guy is Nestor, but Booth says that it's Tucker Patterson, Nestor's roommate. Now that's kinky.
So it's back to the interrogation room for Tucker. His lawyer says that Tucker is the victim of statutory rape. Booth asks how long the relationship went on, and why Tucker had sex in Nestor's bed. Clearly, Booth has never had a roommate that he hates and wants to screw with in small ways for his own amusement. Booth thinks that the reason is because the camera was pointed at Nestor's bed, but if Tucker knew about the camera, couldn't he have moved it a little? Tucker, still in his dorky sweater vest, says that Mrs. Destry gave him money to keep him quiet, and Nestor came up with the idea of blackmailing her for more. It worked, and Nestor collected five large. They were going to do it again, but Tucker felt guilty and said he was going to tell his parents. And then Nestor killed himself.
In the lab, Jack reports that Nestor had taken a heavy dose of ketamine, or "Special K," before he died. Booth thinks that someone dosed Nestor, but Brennan says he could have taken it recreationally. Meanwhile, Zack is telling Angela about his sex life, or lack thereof. Angela suggests that Zack talk to a guy about it. They swipe their cards and head over to Booth, Brennan, and Jack. Jack belches again, very fake-sounding, and Booth advises him to go back to Sid's, and he'll get the cure for his heartburn. This gives Brennan a brainstorm. She declares that the ketamine would give Nestor heartburn, and the rope around his neck would hold the gastric juices in his throat, weakening his hyoid. Zack comes over and says he needs to ask Booth about sexual positions, and Booth says that if Zack does, Booth will take out his gun and shoot Zack between the eyes. Hee! David Boreanaz is the only thing worth watching about this show.
Brennan takes them to "the Angelator" (formerly the Magic Holograph Machine) and has Angela run a few different scenarios involving stomach acid and hyoid bones. Turns out that Brennan is right, and it would take the hyoid eight days to crack. Brennan decides that Nestor's death was a suicide. Booth gets all pissed off, and accuses Brennan of helping the school cover up a murder.
Brennan looks at Nestor's skeleton while also gazing at the photo the ambassador gave her. Angela asks Brennan if she ever believed in something despite the evidence to the contrary. Brennan says that she hasn't, but she's hoped for things. Brennan thinks that she's the only one who cares about the truth of Nestor's death, because she doesn't have an agenda. She thinks that suicide is the most rational explanation, and what she hopes doesn't matter. Angela shows her a drawing of Nestor and says that he couldn't have killed himself. Yeah, that'll hold up in court. Angela says that she can get more proof.
Back in Brennan's office, Angela cues up a video that was on Nestor's hard drive, and not on the DVD they already watched. Booth and Brennan watch as, on the screen, Nestor gives Camden a necklace with a seahorse charm on it. Angela thinks that a blackmailer wouldn't give a gift like that. Brennan scoffs, and Booth points out that Nestor probably just gave the gift so he could get some from Camden. Brennan sees something on the tape and has Angela rerun it. It seems that Camden rolled her eyes at the camera. Brennan yells commands at Angela, and if I were Angela, I would have tossed the remote over and said, "You do it, then!" Anyway, they all see Camden roll her eyes, and Angela says that Camden obviously knew the camera was there. Brennan wonders what they do with this information, and Booth says that in public school, they learned how to divide and conquer.
And they're back to the interrogation room. Booth and Brennan are in with Camden, and they have a live video feed (or something) of their other interrogation room, where Tucker is being questioned. Booth says that if Camden will just tell them why Nestor killed himself, they can close the murder investigation. Camden glances at the monitor and asks why Tucker is there. Booth says that Tucker said some things that don't make Camden look good. Brennan adds that she believes Tucker, but Booth thought they should give Camden a chance to explain. Camden doesn't speak. Brennan leads her, and says that she has a hard time believing it was Camden's idea to have Tucker seduce her mother. Camden says that her mother hit on Tucker first. The lawyer says that they're just fishing. Camden says that Tucker "was all 'Stacy's Mom' about it," and she just gave him permission. Mrs. Destry tells Camden to stop it, and Camden tells her mom that she's the perv in this scenario. Camden explains that when her mom gave Tucker money, it gave them the blackmail idea, and then Tucker said it was Camden's turn for blackmail. Booth says that Nestor was rich and lonely with a crush on Camden. She adds that Nestor was cute, and she liked him. They made the tape and showed it to Nestor, and he got upset. Brennan asks if they threatened to show his mother, and Camden thinks Nestor was upset because it broke his heart. Camden expresses regret that Nestor killed himself. The lawyer says that what Camden did was wrong, but she's not responsible for Nestor's death. Booth stands up and tells Camden that she's under arrest for Nestor's murder. The lawyer doesn't understand the grounds. Brennan says that Nestor was going to rat out his blackmailers, so they dosed him with ketamine and hauled him up into the tree. She adds that DNA traces in the rope will prove that. If that's so, why didn't they just test those in the first place? Or is she bluffing? Camden looks busted. Camden asks if she can get a deal if she cooperates and testifies against Tucker. Booth says it depends on what else she has.
Back at Brennan's office, Booth and Brennan are meeting with Ambassador Olivos. Booth explains that the Heads will lose their jobs, the Sheriff will resign, and Camden and Tucker are in custody. Booth expresses condolences and the ambassador starts to leave. Brennan calls her back and says that Nestor was a good man, and he died because he was trying to do the right thing. She returns the photo of Nestor in his altar boy outfit, and Ambassador Olivos walks away, crying. Booth congratulates Brennan for impersonating a human successfully.
Zack and Angela have a meal at Sid's as Jack eats something at the bar. Angela is giving Zack advice about his sex life. She tells him to go to Blondie and confess that he doesn't know anything about "lovemaking" and he'll do whatever she wants if Blondie will introduce him to "the secrets of love." Zack doesn't think that makes sense, but Angela tells him to give it a shot.
Booth and Brennan walk in and Booth gets all pissed off that the Geek Squad is hanging out in his place. He appeals to Sid, who says that as long as they don't talk about bodies and stuff, it's fine. Jack announces that whatever Sid gave him cured his heartburn. Booth tells the Geek Squad that the counter is his, and the booth is theirs. He sits at the counter, and Jack makes a big show of getting up and leaving. Booth picks everything up from the counter and places it in front of his space. Hee! I love when Booth gets childish. Brennan sits to him and says that she thinks he has "a subconscious knack for reading body language." Basically, she's saying that his gut instinct might actually be scientific fact.
